How To Dress Up Your Engine!

- It's somewhat by accident that I 'dressed up' my engine. I was really just trying to fit my AC compressor and solve the vent problem with my valve covers. However I found a kit, and a set of valve covers that worked perfectly for my application.
In this video I go over the installation of that kit as well as the valve covers.

Dress up your engines!!! Scotty Kilmer in a parallel universe
Tesla Maxwell Vroom vroom SKRRRT
Such a thing of beauty! Wife caught me watching this and now thinks I have issues... they just don't get it. Fantastic video, Eric - this is custom building at its very best. Top quality visuals and great sound quality. Perfect!
Thanks. BTW, I have the same issues. You're not alone.
My girlfriend does the same thing. "Seriously, you're watching the car guy videos again?"
its Eric, the car guy, lol
Looking good Sir. Very bling. :D "I want my oil to stay in my engine". That's a top tip right there. :)
Oil in the engine is good..Oil on the track is not good
You didn't torque those valve cover bolts properly. You have to say "click".
Godfrey Poon it was a flex type not a click type.
thisisntme But he didn't say "boinggggggg" either!
I thought they were torqued to a "medium grunt" spec?
Scotty kilmer has the best "grunt gauge".
Godfrey Poon or crank on the bolt till ya hear the crack, then back off 1/4 turn
Elvis is dancing on top of the engine at 9:50
Nice
LOL!
Was expecting you to put an actual dress on your motor...
Yet still I was not disappointed! Good video!
Just as I moved to Florida 3 years ago my AC died... I got a job working outside, so I get all nice and sweaty then get in a 110+ degree car and head home... not fun.
I've been fixing my own cars with Eric's videos for 7 or so years now, watched all of the AC videos and properly replaced the compressor, vacuumed the system and refilled it, did the dryer receiver and the expansion valve as well... finally have AC. Point is YES, when it's very hot you're dying for some AC. Honestly on long trips of it being over 100 you can start to feel faint, it's not a good thing.
This isnt prom dress, its more like sexy lingerie
Hopefully, unlike both a prom dress or sexy lingerie, it won't end up all over the floor.
HAHA best comments ever!
"she took off like a dress on prom night"
I don't normally look at the mantlepiece when stoking the fire but an engine like that I'd make an exception.
This video is much better than the long ones about the fairmont. Is more like summary of what you've been doing and that's something I can enjoy more than watching hours and hours of the entire process. The engine look awesome, btw.
Nice job.
Thanks for that feedback. For those that want the longer versions, there's a 30 min version of this video BTW, I'm making those available to Premium Members on my website. Link in the description.
I have used CVF Racing parts in the past. Their parts are well made with a great finish and fit. Due to continued failures, I finally bit the bullet and spent $2300 on a Vintage Air FrontRunner system. The Vintage Air system came with all the components needed to ensure the proper fit and operation of the accessory drive. Aluminum water pump, 170 amp alternator, power steering pump, belt tensioner, all the ARP fasteners needed, and a signal Serpentine belt. The system has been installed for three months now with about 5K miles on it including a desert run with 100+ temperatures. Before I installed the FrontRunner system I never got more than a thousand miles without a failure. The only problem remaining is all the rusty junk I need to replace under the hood. The upfront price on the Vintage Air system made me say bad words but with it said and done it is the better value.
Yea, I thought about that. It's funny that in the end I will have probably spent $2K on my system and it will look like I never did anything when I'm done.
The Vintage Air FrontRunner system is a beautiful piece of art but the best part of the system is I bolted on a 100K miles of reliability. The only complaint I have is the support from Vintage Air was not worth the time I put into. Unlike CVF Racing that is always helpful. I really love the Fairmont Videos and will watch all the videos you can produce. Remember family comes first then the Fairmont, import repair videos, ETCG1 and last and most likely least sleep. Keep up the great work and thanks for being on CZcams.
Good choice on the power steering pump. You've made a impressive and gorgeous engine.
LOL! "Calibrated torque wrench hand"! LOVE IT! (Yeah, as Godfrey Poon suggested, a nice vocal "click" would've sealed the deal.)
I have a 460 swapped into my 78 f250 4x4 and CVF had everything I needed to get the alt. and ps mounted correctly. Great stuff!
I just started my channel and feel the same way as you about the "hand calibrating torque settings" and said to people don't break my shoes. Then I tried to torque something that wasent a die or need setup and I snapped 2 heat stressed bolts. Then got lucky with the extraction but said to people see what happens in this kind of situation. LOL. Thanks for the inspiration to make my own channel and your video's are great and love them. Keep up the great work.
Good luck with your channel!
Beautiful Engine Sir! Impressed. Can't wait to see her put together. Can't wait for the next video!
"I should have the Fairmont project done by mid 2016" -Eric the car guy 2015
I know you've went above and beyond from the original goal but just saying ;)
So true.
Ha! I dropped a tip in the comments and you bought it up! Good build one of the best automotive channels on youtube 👍
That's one gorgeous engine!
ERIC, THAT ENGINE LOOKS AWESOME, I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE A VIDEO OF THE CAR RUNNING AND REVVING ONCE IS ALL DONE !!!
That engine sounds sweet on the dyno. And has the looks to match
I appreciate the reasons behind the choices, that helps.
that motor is absolutely BONKERS!!!! Nice work man!
Those covers are gorgeous. So much better.
Those rubber and steel gaskets are the only way to fly on a 302. The 130 amp is OE for a 90s Taurus, also an awesome part. Stock 80s alternators have terrible low rpm output.
Large Body 2 holes all always 130 amp.. Ford uses them in many a truck and vans..
I would add. These things get hot above 50% loads. Which is why ford uses a 175 amp fuse and #4 stranded wire from alternator too battery....
that engine is a work of art 💜
the nut on the fastener trick is great for emergency off road repairs.
"...most people don't like using the Ford power steering pump--"
*memories of an excessive grinding whine from the power steering pump on our old '00 Mustang come rushing back*
mehpersonguy0 there is an easy fix for that. a cap full of atf fluid will stop the sound.
That engine looks great the way you built it, and hope everything works out fine once it is in the car. It must be so rewarding to know that you built that engine yourself, and it is a workhorse like no other. It is nice that you have power steering and A/C on the vehicle also since the A/C will definitely be needed in the Summer heat.
Two things Eric, one, I never use my a/c. My roof comes off #ttop, and I'm ALL about that lifestyle(sunburn and all). Two, maybe you did look into it but vintage air makes kits for almost EVERYTHING. Jay Leno stands behind there products and jay is much smarter than I. Both those being said I'm sure there is good reasoning you have made the choices you have and although a die hard bowtie fanboy I really hope you enjoy this project on the streer
Very nice dress up kit Eric! I remember the old cheap style chrome valve covers and timing cover kit for the chevy 350, but those aluminum ones look real heavy duty.
On a boosted engine I'm afraid you are going to need a oil catch can. Boost and valve cover breathers don't work well together. The catch can may be a pain to find room to mount. But it's a real good idea so you don't oil down your engine bay.
And I can see why you were a little upset about the missing water pump pulley hardware. I believe they don't supply them with it because the needed bolt length can vary greatly depending on a fan set up used. Not everyone runs an electric fan. And on the mechanical fans the needed bolts will depends on the spacer length or fan clutch being used.
The engine is looking good!
Eric. That cutting bolt with nut tric. Trick is intend to cut just next to nut. Use some random nut, lock it to the correct bolt lenght in a vise and cut the bolt by leaning to the nut.
I'm not a Ford guy but that engine is SICK!!!!! Great job!
Technically the engine isn't a Ford so you're good.
ERIC, There is a 93 Integra GS-R for 4500 a bit away from where I live. It looks in quite good condition.
u can make ur own little catch can type deal by stuffing steel or brass wool/shavings into the baffles, the oil will condense on it and it helps
Never seen an engine before without PCV.
If the breathers leak, maybe you can route it back into the intake?
Can't wait to see it drive. That old granny sedan with that beast of an engine, so cool.
PCV systems didn't show up until the 1950's. Before them, they used to vent the engines out of a 'draft tube' on the back of the engine. The PCV actually came about because the US army wanted to drive their Jeeps underwater.
Well you're definitely doing what you love Eric! making art!! Can't wait to see the first drive but I also don't want the build to end but then again projects are never finished for us car people!
So glad to I found this channel.
I'm glad you did too.
Definitely like the black valve covers better.
Maybe i'll do this with my mustang...one day lol. Great video and the Elvis clock in the back ground kills me!
valves on shafts and a Saginaw pump....had those on my old Plymouth fury stock....haha love your project keep the vids coming....
It is beautiful. My Harley was chromed out like that. I spent more time cleaning it, than I did riding it. 😂 That motor will require a full time job just to keep it clean. But hey, she sure is purtty!
She isn't the prettiest girl at the prom, but she puts out. Well done Eric, love that you are putting A/C back in your ride. Remember when you do your tour you are welcome to crash at my place. I have an awesome house you can put your car in the garage and no weird man-love. Unless... lol. ~Dave
Thanks! I might just take you up on that.
Hell yeah dude. As soon as I find a license plate from Ohio I'll mail it out for you to autograph for our collection off cool kids from CZcams. I live in Jacksonville Florida, I'll send my personal info in the kit for your autograph and feel free to stay here.
Great looking engine
Ive always wondered why people put valve cover breather filters on everyday cars. This example is an exception for sure, but I've always felt keeping it routed into the intake on your average engine is best.
Like a kid in a candy shop, I see your passion Eric. 1970's cars in Australia had no A/C and we just had to sweat it out, sometimes at 45c. I can see a road trip coming up on CZcams in your Fairmont Eric?
Thanks, and yes, if I can swing it.
With dressing the external threads after trimming off part of the original length, I was taught to always use a die. That is the best way. A very good mechanic/technician should have a die set adjusted to a looser cut to minimize re-cutting any of the good, original threads. The trick with the nut is just that: a trick (more like a shortcut). Only use that method in a pinch.
For internal threads, there are specific thread-chasing taps that will minimize re-cutting the good part of a threaded hole. A common application is the spark plug hole; use white grease in the tap's flutes to trap the chips. Then, clean out the re-cut spark plug hole carefully and thoroughly with dental picks (yeah, really!).
you are the man, straight up all videos are great!
that engine looks sick dude. proper for v8
very nice! it's not like you can see the water pump fastener once it is in, you will be the only one that knows. something to improve later.
Love me some Fairmont videos. I think the new, shorter videos will help keep those Fairmont haters or the ones with the shorter attention span a little more intrigued. Keep the Fairmont stuff coming and get to doing what you want to do.
Thanks for the input!
That crank pulley is not the stock size pulley. The stock pulleys did not need the Allen screw sets. They were mounted with a regular hex bolt and would not work with the under drive water pump pulley due to them being to big to even mount together.
hey eric greetings from Greece
Hello Greece!
Dude that's a master piece!!
I have the same comp steel rockers. I like them, but I am using a stud girdle since I am going to spin it to 7500 with pretty stout valve springs. Yes, shaft rockers are nice.
That sounds awesome.
keep em coming, thanks as always Eric
That is a sexy engine. Always appreciate your vids, mate.
Another great video Sir. That looks very tidy indèed. Cheers!
You should use those valve covers on "Pit Stop," the 302 that came out of the Mustang... if you ever do anything with that engine.
The block is still at the machine shop. I don't think it's usable. There are plenty of small block Fords out there though.
your awasome! Eric sounds a bit happier, i think its all the cash tied up in the sleeper... dont worry bro i have days like these ...perseverance
The old valve covers look a lot better but obviously you have a much improved breather situation with the new ones.
Simon Coles the old ones could have been modified to work. it would have been easy to weld in a baffle and repaint.
I thought about it, but welding aluminum is not as easy as you think. Not to mention the old breathers won't breath as well as the new ones.
Engine looks awesome
Eric, the engine looks outrageously awesome! Great work. Hope it fits in the car. It looks like it should be installed on an aircraft carrier.
It fits just fine.;)
probably end using oil catch can after you pull the car out the garage. lol great vid eric.
thanks eric for the awsome videos!
that's gonna be so so so epic.
What does the valve cover need breathers for? Is there pressure inside that needs to be equalized? And if so, then why does only one side of the valve covers have them, and the other side doesn't?
I installed a CVF kit on my Pontiac and ran into pulley alignment issues too. I have an aftermarket balancer and that threw off the pulley alignments. The water pump shims CVF sent weren't thick enough so I ended up making my own. I also had to make new spacers for the brackets. Thankfully I have a machine shop and was able to get everything dialed into a gnats ass. I redid the belt tensioner to get rid of the two piece one CVF sent and fabed a different power steering to head bracket. All those spacers .. washers and slotted brackets was just to sloppy for my taste and looked kind of clunky. This isn't a criticism of CVF because they have to try and cover as many permutations as they can in one kit. Mine was off just enough to be an issue.
great video Eric!! it's very detailed, I love all of your video's. I like how you use viewer's tips and tricks. :)
once this guys finishes this car its gonna be worth like a quarter million dollars.
cool project
Yes Eric, that's a perddy mode, lots of chrome with a hint of chrome. You out did yourself on this Mona Lisa. Will it hurt to turn on your A/C while at high RPMs ?. The camera seemed extra steady today. Was this the fault of my pal steady hand Brian?.. That is a nice motor, I ain't kidding, WOW !!!!, I'm Jealous. TTFN all.... Angelo.
U need an understated sticker that ways " Turbo (s)powered by Ford. Are you boosting it are you right?
Run an evac system that will re-route the oil vapors into your exhaust, moroso makes a kit.
I just realized you look like Richard Rowling I'm sorry lmao love the channel man
How long till we see the car actually run Eric? lol... Great videos by the way!
IDK, I'm working as fast as I can though. It's not like I enjoy staring at it making engine noises and not going anywhere.
Ha, ha... heck, my ride is running and I still make the vroom vroom noises sometimes.... lol...
Oliver is going to be awesome...!
How do you figure out what way to run the belt around all the pullies? How do you figure out the correct length of belt? How do you figure out the correct tension of the belt across everything?
In order. Ribbed side goes to ribbed pulley. Smooth pulley goes to smooth side of the belt. The belt came with the kit and was sized for it. After a while you develop a feel for belt tension. czcams.com/video/ZSTZdTAB_As/video.html
That engine is so beautiful... Angel engine
+ericthecarguy cant wait to see it all done
I had seen a video about a diverter for the exhaust have you thought about running one? I know that you are building this as a "sleeper" From what I saw I thought having the ability to have the option is a cool concept have the option to run the exhaust off the header or switch to running through the muffler or straight exhaust with a push of a button.
Not using a push button. Designing my own cable system so I can instantly open and close it.
Should you wait any amount of seconds in the morning to put your car in reverse? and does this apply to cars after a certain year. All feedback would be great
any chance that beauty will fit in my 04 toy taco or my 08 wrangler??? It would surely help me climb trees faster.
COPYMAN it will help you get stuck faster. massive HP isn't always a good thing when off roading. you will just get stuck faster and break things faster.
A boosted engine will almost always need a catch can. i wish those shiny valve covers has a breather on both sides.
Ever get chance to see if valve covers fixed issue with oil being pushed? I'm having same issue
Man that engine looks like a million bucks!!!
nice engine Eric
Are your fasteners also aluminium Eric or just occasionally?
skookum as frig
nice looking engine... btw has anyone ever tried Perspex valve covers ( yes I know they would get coated with oil about 10 seconds after starting the engine but it would look cool at a car show )
ERIC!!!!! most likely you will need and oil catch can. thats what happens when you have BOOST! "Boost pressure in crank case=need oil catch can" good luck love the build.
It also depends on how much boost. For the most part I'll be driving this car on the street, not at full boost.
Eric, I think I need an oil catch can on my EuroR H22(11.5:1 comp) in my 93 Accord. I was told it would cut back on the white smoke that comes out of the exhaust at high RPMs. Any truth to this?
hey I just got a new governor for my truck but it won't go in all the way or it is and I can't tell, there's nothing in the chamber or anything blocking the way so my guess is replacing the cap with a taller one (I have a short stubby cap) but I'm not sure on it tho need more information
Hey Eric, I have an 87 Mustang GT that I am going to build once I get back to states and my goal is what you just built! Around how much would it cost to build something like this? I'm guessing in the 7500-10000 range. Thanks, love your videos!
close to 1 million subs
If this is a street vehicle, will valve cover breathers to open air not violate vehicle (emissions) annual inspection?
Looking good Eric! Loving the build so far man.
One question. Why not use an oil catch can instead of just the breathers?
Eric- do you have an HEI ring for those plug wires to snap into? It's usually a GM thing- with the integrated HEI coil on top, and the wires snap into the ring to secure them. I don't know if you've ever mentioned the ignition setup? Plugs type and brand? Points or electronic? Coil? Thanks Man.
I put it on after I made the coil wire. Later episode.
I have an incredible eye for detail!
Looks like the turbo housing is MUCH to close to the alternator and will cause it to get very hot?
Also the water pump pully is STILL i slightly out of line with the belts if you check with a straight edge on one side?
Lizza
The pulley is fine. I also have a blanket for the turbo. I don't have it on now because it's easier to work on the engne without it.
I can't wait!!!!!!!!
