Earlier this year, a team of security personnel working in Soweto was ambushed by a heavily armed gang. One guard was shot dead. A month later, two security guards were gunned down while escorting a City Power utility truck to a salvage yard in Johannesburg. The target: copper cables. Copper cable theft is evolving, with highly organised and well-armed thieves stopping at nothing to get their hands on this valuable commodity - including killing poorly resourced security guards tasked with protecting City Power and Eskom’s essential infrastructure.

My heart goes out to these brave warriors defending our infrastructure. I pray that there could be some reprieve to allow them to do the actual work that they were trained for. Thanks for the videos, Carte Blanche!

What about deploying the SANDF in the hot spot area's. Welfare starts at home and not in deploying troops in other African countries. We need to look after our own countries challenges before looking after the safety & security of other countries.

Thank you Carte Blanche for yet another interesting topic. My honest opinion is that these criminal acts are on the rise due to our SAPS clearly not well trained, resourced and lead by surely one of South Africa's biggest disgrace to any ministry (Bheki Cele). These acts together with all other sectors of our everyday criminal operations will never stop (In fact it will only get worst). Our Justice system is like the tail is wagging the dog and not the other way like it should be.
The sooner the ANC (And I refer to the whole ANC) is removed from governing our beloved/broken country the better for every single one calling him/herself a citizen of South Africa.
Again thank you for brining these stories to our desks.
PS: Oh please tell Derick he can surely dance like a pro LOL

We have protected over 40 TSS ( mini subs and substations in brick houses ) in our area
Through the CPF initiative we have raised awareness , had meetings with saps , security companies and city power for our area and they have all been compliant in this initiative
    1) we have over 40 locked and secured with clear signs of where the keys are kept ( zero breach has occurred since this inception of the project to these TSS
    2) we get CPF , security companies to ask for valid City power ID , job card and waver forms on each job ( with clearance from CP )we find that they are working on and together with risk management which is city powers security ( they are the complainant), they can open the case , we are just the eyes and ears for them , we have managed to bring down cable theft etc down to a minimum.
It’s important that all the steak holders meet and discuss ways to avert crime in there areas .
No personal, city power contractor or official is allowed to work on the network when there is load shedding .
A lot of people don’t know this and there is a 24 hour security control room for city power and they will respond and ask the necessary questions when they arrive at the site
Also we have a list of all the substations in the area and when we on patrols we check each one
I have many other ideas but We as the cpf get very little support from our communities
It’s a shame because no power no country
    Keep
    Well
    Keep safe

Why does South Africa not make the sale of scrap metal copper TOTALLY ILLEGAL. And also ban the export thereof?

  • @samdavies1335
    @samdavies1335 Před rokem +5

What needs to happen is to have a 0 tolerance for crime of any sort so that the focus is not just on the things we regard as serious but on crime as a whole. Many years ago when i worked as a police officer and employed this technique the results were incredible and the word spread fast. Criminals thought twice about commiting crime in our area. This was in a major city and it worked. It starts even with littering and urinating on the street. When there is no tolerance for the least little thing , the mind set of everyone changes. We are in a situation where so much is tolerated and excused that unless everyone works together nothing will change. Change happens from the top down not from the bottom up.

50 years ago when power was disrupted in Florida Roodepoot the mine arrived on site while the medics were attending to the injured the had equipment that told them where the break was. Know 50 years latter should eskom not have that technology or better. Is it not possible to send drones out every night and day to secure the stations and actually shoot at the thieves or at least nutrilze there vehicles and tear gas them while security arrived to arrest them.

    Think on this:
For every R1 spent on cable replacement, it costs the consumer R1 more.
For every R1 spent on security, it costs the consumer R1 more.
This over and above the cost of the blackout (non-loadshedding).
Crime affects each and every one of us.

I believe these thugs are being protected, supplied and funded at the highest levels. This is why they can do what they do. They are being used to ensure ESKOM collapses. This is why law enforcement do absolutely nothing to catch these thugs because there is an agenda to cause as much chaos through violent crime and cable theft.

Living here in City of Tshwane. Spoken to officials and councillors about protecting the local cable theft hotspot.
They are complacent. Not in the budget they will tell you. But still in the budget to replace the cable every 60 days.
That I think just sums up the struggles we have. The syndicates go high up. Nobody will do anything to stop them out of fear. Police are useless when it comes to prevention.
And government policy is all talk no action. Ban the export of scrap, fair enough to say that. But that just feeds the local market and black market with lower dealer prices.
If the kg of copper was enough to feed the family. Then how much more needs to be stolen when the price drops.
