I am in the middle of sewing the Strata top, and so glad to see this tutorial before I tackle the neck band as it can be tricky. We are having a rather chilly June in Scotland so I hope to wear my Strata in July…..
Glad it was helpful!
love these tutorials! shelfful for me! Thank you so much
So glad it was helpful!
I noticed you have a Bernina. Use presser foot 2 to stop a roll on the outer edges when seam finishing, it makes all the difference for keeping the fabric flat and well behaved. 😊
That's a great tip, thank you!
Oh, I love this! And your patio is dreammmy!
Love, love, love this! Thank you.
What a fun top🥰Looks great 👍🏼
Happy Earth Day, Meg. I am looking forward to a little selfish strata. Thank you for all you do to spread goodness. 💜
Thanks for the sew along video. I was stuck on the neck facing and was happy the video showed how to do it.
I only had to watch this video (the neck part) 10 times to get through sewing the neck, but I made it through and I LOVE my new strata top. Excited to make more.
Finn is a great videographer! Would LOVE more sew alongs!
thanks! - Finn
I’m in love with my Strata Top! Thank you for such a beautiful and helpful sew-along! Such creative vibes from it, very inspiring! 🥰
Hi! Thanks I really enjoyed this video - you make sewing sew easy! Finn did a great job & love the music too!
thank you! - Finn
Thank you so much for great easy beginner instructions! Love❤
Thank you! Glad you like them!
Love your work space! I am new to sewing. Just cut out the shirt no 1.
Oh, just got done with this, it came out perfect. Great instructions! Thanks!
Wonderful! Glad you enjoyed the pattern and sew-along
Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed your video very much
Yes please!!! Have only just found your Channel now & I gotta say, I'm very impressed. So informative, the but presented in such a casual & relaxed manner - I'm definitely a Fan! By the way, I'm in Australia "the Land Down Under" so G'day & Bye for now, Zoe' 🙂
you are so kind, thank you!
One tip that may be helpful for beginners (such as myself) is that the french seam doesn't work great on the tight armpit corners because there's a lot of bulk in the seam that bunches up.
Just made this shirt - thank you for this video!
You're so welcome!
thank you!! after seeing how the neck is done I understand what went so wrong with my forager vest!! time to try again!
Yay! I'm glad it helped clear up some confusion!
Hey, I did find the sizing measurement. I had printed the patterns in April..finally going to sew these great patterns.
Hope you and yours are doing very well...stay safe. I know you are wearing a mask like I am.

The sew along was great and I finally made my strata top:). I can’t wait to make more of these tops.
I would love to see a sew along for the Matcha Top:)
Great idea! We'll try to make it happen
Sew Liberated fantastic!
Thank you for the instructions! I'm a beginner, so they all be super useful for me. I love your style, can't wait to learn a bit more so I can sew your other patterns
3 pieces! That’s my idea pattern.
I would love to see a tutorial for the estuary skirt pattern! Just got the pattern and would love to have a helpful walk through of how to make it.
Awesome! I will tell my mom. -Finn
@@SewLiberated Same! I just bought the Strata Top and the Estuary Skirt a couple days ago. Sewing Therapy has a great sewalong with the skirt but I would love to see the tutorial from Meg
Bonjour de France merci beaucoup
Hi, thanks for the tutorials! Please can you tell me what’s the best fabric to use for this lovely top? Many thanks!
I always gravitate toward a mid-weight linen or linen blend. Nothing too stiff!
Great sew along! I’ve quilted for years but recently got into garment making. I’m going to give this patterns try. I love your earrings and ring!! By any chance, do you have a link to where i can find them?
yay! I hope you love making it. The jewelry is by Ashley Procopio.
Thank you for this! I REALLY appreciate it! So will other beginners 😉...NOW I understand your neck area directions 😎.. Time to make another the right way 🤣... it will lay better I am sure 🌈... Maybe the Estuary skirt next? Or Maybe those directions are clearer without videos 🤞🏼
And the new written instructions on this top are MUCH clearer than the old text instructions for beginners, even without seeing pictures, thank you! (Words like "lengthwise" and other words to help define which surface is being discussed really help a newbie, especially if there are no drawings!) I've gone through other patterns I have, and it appears the Estuary Skirt is quite clear with the pictures being there, I understand all the instructions, but the Forager Vest is still without drawings, yet I wont' get to that one for a while, so hopefully by then I'll be clear on your text-only instructions nonetheless (I haven't studied it yet, will do others first). Thank you again for this extra effort
@@KatSchlitz So glad you found the video and the updated instructions to be helpful! I do have the Estuary on the docket for an upcoming video.
This is great! I found the neck facing bit to be especially helpful. What kind of iron do you have? Mine just stopped steaming and I’d love to have a nice one this next time around.
Thank you so much! And here is the iron I have amzn.to/3eUdSaS
I made my first strata this evening and I LOVE it! One thing I wasn’t able to figure out was how to lengthen or shorten my pattern. Do you have a tutorial on that?
So glad to hear that you are loving your Strata! While we don't have a tutorial on that ourselves, there are some great ones out there, including this one from Seamwork: czcams.com/video/0UfhQaHKZ_Q/video.html ... The Strata pattern pieces include a line where we think it is most optimal to lengten / shorten it. And if you still have questions, please let us know here or at support@sewliberated.com. That would be helpful to hear. Maybe we will get a tutorial up to address your questions and help others as well!
Sew Liberated thank you! That video helped. That was sort of what I was picturing in my head. Seems easy enough! Thanks again, Meg!!!
Sew Liberated and I always enjoy your videos! Even if you did a tutorial that would be so nice!
Just made my first Strata and I am in love! Can I ask which fabric you used for the grey top you are wearing in the video? I’d love to make another with that same fabric. It lays so beautifully and I really like the design!
A wonderful idea! That is a cotton ikat. You can find similar fabrics at Stonemountain and Daughter fabrics.
This is such a lovely tutorial. I bought some linen fabric in a beautiful teal colour when I bought this pattern, and I am hopefully going to now start hand sewing this! What would you suggest to secure the unfinished edges before sewing together? You used the zigzag on your machine, but I'll be hand sewing. I was thinking I might just double fold to make the edge, and sew down with a backstitch, then I'd have a strong double fold to sew together to complete the shirt?
Thank you! I think that sounds like a good method, or you could use a decorative stitch, like Natalie Chanin does in many of her garments.
Hello! I am preparing to make the strata top and I am so excited! I am wondering, do you have a suggestion for making a smaller neckhole? I prefer shirts that do not show bra straps.
Hi there! Send us an email to support@sewliberated.com and we can help you out with making the alteration. Thanks!
-Meredith
Thanks for this video! I've had this pattern from a Taproot Magazine for awhile now. Recommendations for purchasing fabrics online? -Kristen
I always check out Stonemountain and Daughter Fabrics, as well as Blackbird Fabrics. Glad you found the video helpful!

Hello! I have many of your courses and patterns! Is there any way that you could do a boat neck hack in one of your tops or bodice? The kind of boat neck with the sides that "hide" under the seams? (if it makes any sense!!). it's the type of collar that makes my neck look the best, and I can't figure out how to make one! Thank you for making those videos (and classes!)
Hello! I am sorry but we don't have plans to do this currently. If you email support@sewliberated.com we can try to help you figure out this neckline.
thank you for your answer! I wasn't sure if your CZcams account was being monitored! I will email soon!@@SewLiberated
Not crazy about the shark bite looking hem. As someone just getting their sewing feet wet, how would we extend the length to a straight hem and extend the arm length a bit too if desired - maybe do a video on how to alter pattern? Thanks.
It's very easy to alter the hemline. Just re-draw it (on the paper pattern) to where you'd like it - sound like you could just make a straight hem to fit your preferences. Just make sure the front and the back end up being the same length at the side seam. As for the arm, you can also re-draw to fit your preferences. When altering a pattern, I do recommend making a muslin out of scrap fabric in order to check for fit before cutting into your nicer fabric.
Hi Meg! Would like to try a French seam with this shirt but have never done one and am confused what I would do in the curved underarm area, where I would normally notch close to the seam line. I'm thinking maybe sew the first seam wrong side to wrongside at 3/8", notch into that, then cut that seam down to 1/8" and then sew the 2nd seam. Does that make sense for this project? Thank you!
Yes, that makes sense. Because it is a tight curve, it's going to be difficult to get it to lie flat. Another option for those side seams would be finishing the edges with binding - called a Hong Kong seam finish. It takes some extra time, but it really is a beautiful finish.
@@SewLiberated Thanks for responding. I did it and it turned out really well! Was a pleasure to sew. Will be posting on Instagram. Thank you!
@@barbaraalsko1429 I'm wanting to french the seams on my strata also - I'm just wondering if you ended up doing french seams, or the hong kong seam finish?
@@katherinesnoswell2897 I did! See my question to Meg above for what I did. It came out well!
@@barbaraalsko1429 thank you!!
Hi Meg , I have 2 questions regarding sewing the strata top-- I am going to use my serger instead of using my sewing machine so do I need to serge the edges since I am going to use the serger & can I get the hemming done first? I will use the sewing machine to hem and sew the neckline. Hope this makes sense to you. Please advise. Thanks again! Jennifer A.
Hi Jennifer, you can definitely sew the shoulder and side seams using a serger. It's up to you whether you serge the edges and then sew the seams with a sewing machine. It's totally personal preference! If I opt to just serge the shoulder and side seams, I like to press the serged seam to the back and sew it down with a regular stitch. This makes for a nice, strong finish.
Hello! Give me some help.
I have the Strata printed on paper, ( Plus 2 other pattern's of yours)
Where can I find the sizing info.Thank you. I'll keep looking.
Hi Marion, I see that you found the sizing charts! For anyone else who is wondering, you can find them in the pattern instructions and also on the product information photos on my website, www.sewliberated.com/products
Hi! I just made my first strata!! I made it in a small, and it fits well except for the armholes, they are a little small for me which causes some pulling at the shoulders. Any suggestions as far as modifications for next time?
Hi Sara, I would suggest either making a size up or re-drawing the side seam to make the sleeve opening larger. You could do a broad back adjustment, but I think the options I mentioned would be easier and would do the trick!
@@SewLiberated thank you for your tips!!
When sewing a French seam, should I add more seam allowance or just work "small"? I love French seams and I find that my work is often baggy, Thank you, G
A french seam should be about equivalent to a 5/8" seam allowance. If the recommended allowance is smaller, I'd add extra seam allowance when cutting your pieces.
-Meredith
Is it possible to French seam the side seams with the curve under the arm? I have only French seamed straight seams so far.
Hi Em! It should be fine to use French seams on the curve. Send us an email at support@sewliberated.com for other technical sewing questions, or other concerns about converting to French seams.
Best,
Meredith
for someone who typically needs a SBA when sewing tops, especially woven, would one be recommended for this top, given the positive ease? thank you!
The Strata doesn't have a dart, so you probably won't need to do an SBA. You can email us at support@sewliberated.com for more fitting help :)
@@SewLiberated thank you!
I don't really understand the under stitching on the facing that is not visible from the outside. I watched this several times but I can't see where you mean. What is the benefit of this step?
Understitching helps the facing or bias to turn to neatly.
I’ve paid for the pdf pattern for the Strata top pattern but only half of the instructions have printed. Can someone tell me the email address so I can contact them
Hi Catherine, you can email us at support@sewliberated.com and we will make sure you have everything you need.
