      This happens when you bunch up A- Class classement riders that all can potentially win a grand tour. It does seem better when you have a clear leadership because you have a clear team structure and helpers that gonna pull for you when you need them too

      You are not wrong, though I would say it is possible to assemble a team of A-Class riders and still get them to work for each other, see Quickstep every classics season.

      @@hagenre8909 It was a bit difficult since Bernal was not in good form starting the vuelta. But in the end he would probably be in 4th in gc if Yates had been more supportive of him instead of doing his own race.

      @@drjekyll832 classics are way different than 3 week grand tours and way different racing tactics - the big winners of the tdf for example (MAJORITY ANYWAY) have always been the clear cut leaders of their team with helpers pacing them accordingly for 3 weeks

    The photo at the finish line, the fog, the headlights, the totally exhausted but victorious rider, what a great photo!
    Lopez can hang this on his wall to reflect this win in 20+ years time as he tells the story with a beer in hand!!
    Some of these still images Lanterne Rouge uses really tell much more of the story that the video images, I like it!

      Highlight for me was watching David de la Cruz's pain face. Haven't seen that much agony since Davide Formolo at the Tour. Maybe it is a prerequisite for UAE domestiques - 'must be able to perform exaggerated histrionics on steep climbs'

    I don't want to jinx this but credit where credit is due to Movistar if they can hold a 2-3 especially as Roglic seems to be as expected a class above everyone else to get a 2-3 is very impressive, and additionally Verona has had an excellent race

    2 days ago we were laughing at Meintjes for chasing De la Cruz, while Eiking was still in red. I guess they knew what they were doing all along

      I think everyone knew meintjes was overall a better climber/gc rider than Eiking. It’s just that when Eiking was in Red, that’s a huge deal for a small team like intermarche, more important than Meintjes getting 12th instead of 14th, so meintjes should’ve been doing all he could to help Eiking stay in red, and then after he cracked raced for himself. I think we can still laugh at meintjes.

      @@benfried7100 Meintjes in top 10 changes things. 6 or 7 days in red doesn't change much when it comes to sponsors geting interested. Top 10 in GC in the grand tour does.

    Perfect timing by Lopez - when Kuss started to pace, I thought - ok, Roglić doesn't want to counter any more attacks at the moment. Lopez probably smelled it too and off he went.

    Honestly, I’m so happy that Meintjes has found some consistent and strong form with Intermarche. With the GC hopes of the whole of Africa on his shoulders, it’s bringing me back 4-5 years to his Lampre years taking top 10s at TDF & Vuelta.

    Amazing job by Lopez (good to see Movistar succeed after losing Valverde) Very brave by Bernal, both today and yesterday, but it looks like this Vuelta is in the bag for Roglic.

      i am still convinced they ride this way because Valverde is out. He wouldnt allow Lopez to attack or would have (weak) attacked Roglic later. Not like Mas who did the right thing and only marked Roglic. Valverde was right there in the last years for all the blunders Movistar made. he definitley is part (imo a big part) of the reason they rode how they rode.

    The fact that Roglic gapped Mas and Bernal at the end tells you that Mas could not have attacked Roglic earlier and held it to the line.

      not necessarily. Roglic's faster sprint finish is the only reason he gained a few seconds on Mas, that doesn't directly correlate to having better legs for all of the last few KMs

      @@elliotbain8260 I would agree normally but this wasnt 2 people sprinting max. Roglic was sprinting, Mas was just riding as fast a pace as he could. Really did seem like ROglic had more left in the tank imo.

      @@elliotbain8260 respectively I disagree. Mas sat on wheels till the end with Roglic doing most of pulling and yet Roglic gaps Mas at the end. That strongly suggests Roglic put Mas right at the limit with Mas just trying to hold Roglic's wheel. If Mas had the legs to gap Roglic and hold it, he should have done so. The fact that he didn't says he didn't have the legs.

    Great recap, as always! The way Lopez flies by De la Cruz on the ascent was nuts. It looked like he was suddenly going downhill after that corner.

    Felt sorry for Lopez in that after all that hard work the camera shot of him crossing the line showed just a thick mist and it was only about 5m later that you can make him out.
    Fully agree that he needs to be riding as number 1 in a GC tour next year without another leader competing with him.
    I think Mas was at his limit as evidence by Roglic accelerating away from him just before the line to take second with a time gap and also get the bonus seconds.
    Chapeau Bernal for his effort and proving his talent.
    I can see why Romain Bardet was pissed at his teammate taking his jersey but the more I see of Micheal Storer the more it's clear he is ruthless.

      Attacking at say 2 km to go is different from getting dropped in the last 200mt where roglic's punch is way better than anyone else

    So many wry quips from LR, I laugh at each one. I loved, “it’s not high altitude the fog will have to do.” From my very limited experience riding in Colombia, a mountain covered in cloud shrouding you with light drizzly rain is to be expected.

    I think Roglic gapped Mas. As interesting as it was to watch Lopez and Mas and to speculate, I found Intermarché's team to be the most unexpected team this whole Vuelta. I hope they can continue to progress and build into a stronger GC team.

    The only way Mas could have won some time is by counter attacking at say 2/3km from the top; which was not an option with MAL up the road. They did the right thing imo

    What would've Valverde and Verona done today to the GC?... Absolutely nothing they would've done. Lopez got his move on Roglic, much more wasn't in the bag and Mas same thing. He didn't seem as strong as Roglic during the whole Altu d'El Gamoniteiru climb.

    Now you see why playing in high altitude mountains is quite other level ... because TDF claim have high mointains but neither are long enough or high compared to this titan mountain ... some say Colombian riders can benefit form REAL high and long climbs you can easily find mountains to climb from 1000 or 2000 to 3000 mosl and longer than 20 km and this is near Lopez or Bernal home towns ... I guess most of the peloton is not interested in sufering like today's stage but as for 'show' /' ratings' you can't deny yesterday and today Colombians made cycling the must see thing on live TV. is insane what they can do, as for Rogla, maybe he can endure but how much how high can stay is true he is the best but todays test is not an A or B+ for rogla chapeau to rogla to use brains to excel on 2 of the most insane back to back stages in the last 5 years.

    Mas definitely looked very comfortable in Roglics wheel. I think he would have been able to attack and drop both Roglic and Bernal.

      Probably because Bernal and Mas are the teams main leaders and if I remember correctly he wasn’t on Lopezs wheel or close enough to close it

      I think he knew he was near his limit and feared bonking if he chased Lopez who clearly had brilliant legs in that last 3km. As it was he limited Lopez lead considerably.
