What are Panic Attacks - Why You Get them?

  • Panic attacks are a sudden onset of intense anxiety. Sometimes when you get anxious, you can feel uptight or on edge. Or you may worry about things. Panic is different. You have a surge of intense fear or physical symptoms that come on suddenly and reach peak intensity within minutes.
With a panic attack you experience four of the following symptoms. This is as defined by the Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, 5th edition.
    1. Palpitations or a pounding or racing heart.
    2. Sweating.
    3. Trembling or shaking.
    4. Sensations of shortness of breath or smothering.
    5. Feelings of choking.
    6. Chest pain or discomfort.
    7. Nausea or abdominal distress.
    8. Feeling dizzy, unsteady, light-headed, or faint.
    9. Chills or heat sensations.
    10. Numbness or tingling sensations that we call parathesias
    11. Derealization (feelings of unreality) or depersonalization
    12. Fear of losing control or “going crazy.”
    13. Fear of dying.
You can have other ways that you show anxiety like crying or screaming, but you would still need to have 4 of the other symptoms as well.
Panic DISORDER occurs when you have regular panic attacks and this is your main problem. You can get to where you don’t want to leave the house or be around people because you fear having a panic attack and not being able to escape. But anyone can have panic attacks or attacks of anxiety without it being the full panic disorder.
Panic attacks can be expected or unexpected. Expected is when there is an obvious trigger like needing to speak in public or waiting for a scary procedure or experience to happen. Unexpected attacks happen when you’re calm and can’t attach the anxiety to anything specific. You can even wake up from sleep in a panic attack.
Panic attacks tend to last for a brief period like several minutes, but you can remain anxious and unsettled for much longer than that.
People who are more sensitive to anxiety and the way it feels, can be more vulnerable to having panic attacks. We call this body vigilance when you are hypersensitive to every body sensation and you worry that your physical symptoms are the sign of a serious physical problem. For example, if you feel your heart beat, you don’t just think about it, you obsess that you’re on the verge of a heart attack. Or if you feel heat on your face, you’re convince you’re getting ready to have seizure.
One of the approaches to addressing panic attacks is to look at how you think about them and what you do because of them. People with anxiety and panic tend to have three kinds of distorted thoughts: catastrophizing, fortune telling and jumping to conclusions.
Catastrophizing is when you blow a situation out of proportion and focus on the worst outcome to the exclusion of lesser outcomes.
Fortune telling is predicting what will happen in the future. And Jumping to conclusions is making assumptions about the final outcome without taking everything into consideration.
Typical behaviors seen with panic attacks:
    Escaping the situation.
    Avoidance
    Safety behaviors
Safety behaviors can make you feel better temporarily, but they keep the panic response going because when you do the safety behavior, you don’t get a chance to test how realistic your assumption is. And you don’t learn to manage the situation because you avoid dealing with it.
These are some of the factors behind the scenes of panic. In another video I’ll put this all together and talk about non-medication ways to address your panic.

I'll never forget my first panic attack. I was 24. It was late at night in January. I felt... weird. Not sick or in pain, but something wasn't right. I tried to sleep, but after a few minutes, I felt like I couldn't breathe. My skin was clammy. I felt this weird feeling of detachment. I can only describe it as feeling like my soul was leaving my body. Straight up, I thought I was dying. My phone was dead, so I rushed out of my apartment to drive to my mom's house up the road. Problem was, it had freshly snowed A LOT, so my car and the street were covered. I started scraping the the snow off my door WITH MY BARE HANDS to climb in. I was so afraid and desperate, that I didn't even notice how cold it was. Only after I sat down in my car did I realize that the snow on the street, not to mention the rest of my windows, were still a hindrance, but by that time, my symptoms calmed down and I realized I wasn't dying after all. I went inside, looked up my symptoms, and there it was. That was 10 years ago. I've had PLENTY of happy years between that, so even though my anxiety has kicked up a notch again, I know I can overcome it just like I did before. WE ALL CAN IN JESUS' NAME.

This video basically sums up why every doctor both physical and mental health don't take people with anxiety or panic issues seriously. It's really sad honestly...and have a LOT of frustrating times not taken seriously or brushed off when I was correct or needed help. I can see why in these basic guidelines 'professionals' have these preconceived notions about people with these disorders. I have been through hell trying to get taken seriously or heard. When someone finally listens it's a god sent and you can finally move forward after YEARS of being ignored.
I once had server abdominal pain that landed me in the hospital. Being in the hospital like that spiked my anxiety tremendously. They couldn't figure out the problem, basically told me to go therapy as if I was making up the pain in my head, and just diagnosed it a muscle strain. I went to a regular clinic a week later, and the doctor was PISSED I was brushed off - my intestines stopped due to my severe IBS.
I hate this anxiety disorder. :(

I have major depressive disorder with psychotic features and every once in awhile I will go in to a orrible panic attack. Not fun. After I face the meeting, it never is as bad as I thought it would be and I am almost proud that I pushed through it. Until the next time. I was driving home from work, totally fine and feeling normal. All of a sudden, I felt a smothering feeling in my chest, extremely fast heartbeat ( went from 120-147 within minutes), then I got blurry vision and a sense of impending doom like I need to stop this feeling but I can't. I call my dad because he knows I have anxiety, I panic, saying in a very frightened voice "something is wrong I don't feel good something is definitely wrong!!!" He's telling me over the phone this is just an anxiety attack or from too much caffeine. I said no, this is NOT from caffeine or anxiety. I was convinced that it was a heart attack, or I was being poisoned or something (irrational fears), I was 5 mins from the hospital so I speed over and walk in, at this point I'm shivering and shaking and I can barely write my information down. I tell the triage nurse something is seriously wrong with me and i need my vitals checked now. My heart rate was 225!!!! I've never had my heart rate that high even while running. They immediately called the physician, i get wheeled in for an EKG, the nurse who did it was so kind and held my hand because i was sooo scared. The tests were all normal, and after Ativan I felt great.

That’s me! Been to ER multiple times fearing a complete meltdown. Main symptoms or reactions: hyper ventilating, detached from reality and total loss of security. Basically scared sh*tless. Suffered for 20 years, to varying degrees.
Slowly realized two important things. Family of origin was a house of terror and chaos. Perfect veneer, complete dysfunction behind the scenes.
Second, the main symptom triggering anxiety in me: hyper ventilating, and over breathing. Would do it constantly, throughout the day. Especially when feeling confusion and uncertainty, guilt or shame. About myself, my choices, and my decision making.
The single most important step now is to slow down, relax my breathing, and take a moment to think, before getting into situations that may trigger anxiety.

I'm so glad I've learned in small degrees not to fear my panic attacks. I still fear them somewhat and that's why I'm not more recovered from agoraphobia. But after a panic attack that occured several years ago when I had called 911 and thought I was about to die of a heart attack, after that I realized panic is uncomfortable but HARMLESS. I never feared my panic attacks as bad after that and now do square breathing, meditation, counting 5 things I can see, hear, feel, etc. I get more panicky when I'm manic with bipolar but even then I handle it much better. I used to hear voices.
I wasn’t a Christian at the time when they first started, but the evil things the voices said scared me and sent me running for God!
I purchased a Bible and began to meditate on scripture. Psalm 8:2 promises God will silence the enemy and the avenger.
John 10:27 says “My sheep hear My voice.”
I wrote down the scripture and every time I heard the voices I would take the scripture out of my pocket and say “it is written ...” and quote the scripture. Soon after doing that over & over, I had memorized the scripture.
It didn’t happen over night, but He did silence the voices for me! I do not take medication and do not hear them anymore! Praise God!!
The Bible is full of God’s promises and I know if He’d silence them for me, He’d do it for others.
I am trying to reach the desperate. The ones who are suicidal while taking medication. This happened to my daughter! Don’t give up! There is hope.

  • @Safinitzine
    @Safinitzine Před 2 lety +2

My sole round of panic attacks back in early 2019 was the scariest, most traumatising event of my whole life. I was suicidal at the time and it's like my body finally took control to show me I did not want to die. It made me believe death was here, in the room with me, creeping inside of me and I found out I wanted to fight back. It has shown my heart and my brain that I was strong enough, that I was not made to be passive and uncertain. I came out of it sure of my strength and more self-confident than ever. The way I understood it is my instinct, the animal in me, got utterly fed up with my heart and brain forever fighting over what would, could and should be and rebelled at once. I took real control: finally got diagnosed with general anxiety disorder, have been on medication rather than stubbornly believe I can do it alone and have been defining life purposes on short and long term.

I suffered from a panic attack July of this year and it was my first ever attack. I thought I was having a heart attack I got rushed to the hospital, they scan my heart, x-rayed me, and they said it was just a panic attack. But I wasn’t convinced and I was obsessing over it constantly and because of that I started suffering from more panic attacks. I would wake up to one and throughout the day I would have heart palpitations. So I went back to therapy and talked about this issue, And later on I was diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder. Now I know not everybody who has health anxiety has OCD but this is just for my personal experience. I started experiencing depersonalization as well and that was scary because I thought I was experiencing psychosis for that I was developing schizophrenia which is one of my all-time worst fears, so you could imagine how I felt haha. I’m writing this because I know a lot of people are going to watch this video because they went through something very similar to what I went through, and my best answer to you guys is DO NOT LOOK UP THE SYMPTOMS. Under any circumstances. Either go to a doctor or seek help from a therapist. Do not do what I did. It will make everything so much worse. And this is not for people who just have OCD. This is for anybody with anxiety and or health anxiety. I wish you guys the best and just know it will get better. Say something in the comments if you need to talk. I’m here I will do everything to help you.

The worst panic attack I had I went to the emergency room. I had a very sharp pain in my chest. It felt like I had been hit by a bolt of lightning. The pain went down both my arms and exited my fingertips. My fingertips ached and throbbed for quite some time afterward. It was not my heart. They did a very thorough heart exam. I have never had another episode like that. Hope I never have another one like that.

The first panic attack I had was August of this year. I don't remember being particularly worried about anything at the time it just happened. I was coming home from paying a bill and all of a sudden I said to myself. Man I'm starting to feel bad. I feel like I'm going to have to go to the hospital. My heart started pounding and when I got home and checked my blood pressure it was 171/99. Heart beating 137 times a minute. I took another blood pressure pill, laid down for a few minutes, thought I was going to have a stroke so I called the paramedics because I live alone afraid I might die and no one would find me in the house for a while. This actually happened to a relative but he had medical issues. Paramedics came out, checked me out, went to hospital, they did an ekg on my heart and everything came out fine. My blood work was fine. So I laid there until I calmed down and they let me go home. I still felt very weak from the attack. Again not knowing this was a panic attack at the time so I went to my neurologist and he had me where an event monitor on my chest for a full month to check my heart. Everything came out fine, they think it's panic attacks that make my heart race. Tachycardia they called it but they are still referring me to a heart doctor. The weakness afterwards, dizziness and lightheadedness is a lot to bare. I am on 1 mg of Lorazapam twice a day that helps a lot. Now I just get them maybe once a month but wish they would just leave altogether. It's something you will never get used to and I cry whenever I get them because I'm so afraid. I have learned to meditate, I have the abide app on my phone, I pick a verse and listen and after about 20 minutes I calm down. I watched my mom die this year. Hard to see your mom in a hospital bed, on a ventilator, blood running out of her nose and catheter. I try to block it out. She was 81 years old and had caught sepsis. I miss her daily and think maybe this is what might be causing these feelings. I'm wondering if I need a psychiatrist.

I’d never had a panic attack before taking an antidepressant... now I know them intimately. My life has been ruined by psychiatry.
Once you’ve experienced 24/7 rolling, med induced panic, day in, day out, there’s no going back. You don’t heal from trauma like that. It becomes imprinted on your soul. My sense of inner contentment and security has been obliterated.
If anyone reading this is considering medication... be very careful. Exhaust every other option, meds should only ever be a last resort.

I have these attacks (almost) every night, and sometimes during the day, and when i have them, i get so scared that i start looking up stuff about death, heart attacks, etc. This makes me even more anxious. Even though every time i have a panic attack, i end up finding out that its a panic attack, but the next day its like i just throw away all that information and start it all over again. This is very stress-full, i even make word documents to write about how i feel, but during the day i just want to forget about it, I am gonna ask my mom if i can get help at a therapist.

Medication and cognitive therapy has helped a lot. I’ve been diagnosed as having major depression disorder, severe anxiety with panic attack. I had a very scary unpredictable childhood. I never felt safe or loved. My 1st panic attack was at age 10 but didn’t know what had happened. So I never spoke about it. Came back in my teens. Now just untreatable depressive disorder and anxiety is my every day life. It sucks.

I experienced my first panic attack at my toxic and stressful job. After that I was different and started to feel like I wasn't all there. I didn't feel safe in myself anymore. That turned into a panic disorder where I felt like I could not get a hold of myself. After the panic attacks subsided, I was left with the derealization and depersonilization and that is horrendous for me because I do not like feeling like nothing is real and detached from myself. My biggest fear is going insane but this video has helped me greatly have hope that it is part of the panic disorder. Thank you so much for making it Dr. Marks. @@karenjean5262 I take medication to help with my anxiety and panic disorder but if I am unable to do that, I try to ground myself by looking at an object and saying what the color is. I will do this with many objects around me until I feel a sense of ease. Usually a panic attack or anxiety attack lasts about 20 minutes or less, so I tell myself "you only have to last 20 min." Also being held tightly helps. If you have a support system and you feel panicked walk up to someone that cares and ask them to hug or hold you. Hugs are said to be helpful to reduce anxiety symptoms since endorphins and stimulate oxytocin release which can boost your mood and have a calming effect. Even a 20 second hug can help. If you have trouble with being touched, a weighted blanket, call a crisis line and talk, journaling, soothing music or a warm bath. If all else fails, go to the ER and let them check you over, if it gives you peace of mind, it is worth it. Lots of love, prayers, and best wishes for peace. We are strong, we live this battle, we continue to survive it! You are a warrior, never be ashamed to ask for help!
