  • I simply love finding old ruins out in a clear space, and that's exactly what I discovered as I continued my tour around the wonderful Tasmanian landscape.
    This subject was perfect for light painting, but as well as that I discovered another great subject to shoot.
    I hope you enjoy the adventure.

Obviously you have been doing this for years Richard and the resulting images are incredible. Love watching an artist at work 👌Playing catch up at the moment as I’m off to Iceland in a few weeks and things are kicking off there Volcanically with thousands of Earthquakes so plans are a bit fluid. Absolutely brilliant. Inspiring me to find a location suitable. Never owned a star tracker. Sorry to ask the stupid question but what does it give you?

    • @nightscapeimages.richard
      @nightscapeimages.richard  Před rokem

      Thanks for watching Mark. A star tracker is a device that actually follows the stars across the sky, thus enabling you to use longer shutter speeds than you can on a fixed tripod. Due to the rotation of the earth the stars, planets, sun and moon all move across the sky and the tracker keeps the target in the camera view.
      This does come at the expense of more complex blending of foregrounds however.

    Great video😊
    For the foreground shots, once you have selected your aperture how do you work out iso and shutter speed exposure settings when light painting?

      Thanks so much. To an extent it's trial and error. A lot depends on the subject colour and texture. Also distance from subject.

    Another amazing video thanks again for sharing. Can I ask you do you always use the infinity marker on yr lenses for focusing ??? so many people focus on stars or use focus peaking etc am curious to know how you focus ??? Thanks Richard.

    • @nightscapeimages.richard
      @nightscapeimages.richard  Před rokem +1

      Thanks so much Judy. Well actually my lens has no markings on it at all. So I have to focus by using the live view rear screen method. Or sometimes by focusing on an object a fair way from the camera. On wide angle lenses the infinity focus point is actually quite close. I generally don't use focus peaking as I find it hides the stars too much and then they become hard to see. Having said that .. focus peaking works if you get a handle on your particular camera.

    Fantastic captures again Richard and yes the temperature here in New Zealand is not nice at the moment, polar blast coming through the two weeks ! Just purchased a used Star Adventurer 2i and the Polar alignment adapter, have been looking at the app and there are three, is the SkySafari 7 Plus the one to go for ? is it an update from the 6 Plus ? have been following your videos for some time and decided to bite the bullet ! Cheers for all help and easy to follow explanations and your stint around Tassi ! was over there back in 1991 to play the Masters Indoor Cricket, we are going to try and get back there to Tiki Tour right around as it is much like NZ. Cheers

      Thanks again Royce. I did answer your question about the Sky Safari in the other video. But in a nutshell . .I'd imagine the Sky Safari 7 Plus is the way to go.

    Wonderful shots. Btw, for your tracked images, you took them behind the trees correct?

    • @nightscapeimages.richard

      Thanks for watching. I always move away from trees when shooting tracked shots of the sky as it makes the blending later so much easier.

    Hi Richard. I’ve always wondering how you make the stars shine in your videos? At What ISO are you recording? Do you use a dslr for videos?

    love that second shot (pano) of the old building! Was curious do you send the land owner a print/digital image of what you photograph that evening? Definitely nice to connect with the owner before shooting, I know I've had some run-ins with curious farmers when I'm out at night at old buildings!

    Richard, Just curious, Why did you not shoot at F1.8 and lower the ISO, instead of shooting at f2.8 at ISO-1600? I would think that because your shooting only 1-shot, that lower ISO would give you less noise, Yes, No?

    • @nightscapeimages.richard
      @nightscapeimages.richard  Před rokem +1

      That's a great question. I could have done that for sure. I do find f2.8 to be a cleaner image around the edges of the frame . .also my camera is amazing at iso1600. I'm not worried about the noise at all.
      I do sometimes shoot wide open at f1.8 but usually that's only in very dark wide open landscape situations . .to capture more light.

    Hi Richard, I have a question that may be a video idea.. I've been asked to join an expo with my (beginner) phone-nightography images..
    Now I'll need to rush to edit and select photos for print(and print them..)
    I'm just chasing my tail here; other than calibration issues from my display to print, will I need to do star reductions or are there other types of details to look out for when getting starry landscapes printed?
    I've noticed you tend to read most comments, so I apologize for being cheeky on this one.
    Thanks for your time, i'd love to hear what you think!

      And of course, thanks for the awesome content and inspiration. I just recently got my hands on an old incandescent camping light :D Hope i can do some magic!

    • @nightscapeimages.richard
      @nightscapeimages.richard  Před rokem +1

      Thanks for watching. It's difficult to say as all images are a little different. But as a general rule I tend to brighten up my images before sending them off to print. Most printed images come out a bit darker than a backlit computer monitor shows them. One of the biggest problems with printing is noise in nightscape images .. it's hard to hide. Also, a lot of printers don't print black all that well .. obviously there is a lot of black tones in a night image.
      It's the old story . .the output will only be as good as the input. Spend the time on editing your images to a high quality.

      @@nightscapeimages.richard thanks for your time! 🙋‍♂️ really helpful, in that it confirms my experience with previous print. Only had a couple holiday photos printed, they did come out dark, but otherwise great!
