- Ranking the Best Background in Baldur's Gate 3 ona tier list! These determine your skill proficiencies as well as what gives you inspiration. A couple of these will allow you to get inspiration whenever you want making them beneficial choices. Others will overlap a lot with your current teammates and won't provide very useful skill proficiencies. I'll be taking all of these into consideration in this BG3 tier list. Would be kinda cool if there was a cutscene at the start of the game which shows your character being caught by the illithids but itâs different for each background like a soldier fighting goblins or a criminal robbing a shop
Ohhhh I love that idea! Would make them feel more meaningful
You need to work for Larian, my friend. Because thatâs an incredible idea I had never thought about. đ
NOO I WANT THAT, DUDE
@@Quantum_Bluntz Agreed!
@@MulderHiggins It would be perfect
Dude really makes a tier list out of anything and I love it.
Ayyy so glad you enjoy!! If you ever have requests just let me know, always looking for new topics. Have an awesome day
We all know Shadowheart is all about her wines, maybe a tier list of which wines she'd like the best based on descriptions lol
@@PABGVRG never considered that but solid idea!! I like the unique tier list ideas so thatâs great, thanks!
Persuasion is a stat i always take because 90% of important dialogue with origin companions is persuasion roll
Agreed. Itâs the most important for good aligned characters but also useful for really anyone
Scratch also acts as a "Folk Hero" because he does the exact same thing in terms of tracking animals and survival-based perception, just without the inspiration points.
Hey thatâs a great point! He is also the goodest boy background
Scratch is the best "Folk Hero", if there was a Saint background, that's exactly what he'd get.
I really wish there were background specific dialogue options, it was a thing in Original Sin 2 and I don't know why they abandoned it
There are some unique ones but kinda rare, like with Minthara you can get extra dialogue as a noble
Agreed though DOS2 did this well
I choose the background solely for roleplaying purposes. And since I always end up with a Sorc and can't undress my Chaotic Good personality I'm stuck with also in RL, on my first run I chose Noble and for the 2nd I went Folk Hero. I must admit, I use inspiration points only when I'm too lazy to reload. Yes, I actively support the Goddess of Fortune with save-scums. I know, I know, shame on me. I don't use the cheesy way for fights, though. The only exception is when I want to enjoy different approaches in fun battles, in these cases I reload the last save before the fight starts and redo the whole thing from scratch.
Yeah the background should most importantly be for roleplaying! Save scumming is totally cool in this game since honor mode exists, and itâs a single player game so my logic is: play how you want to play! Whenever I pick the wrong dialogue and upset Shadowheart I reload too hahaha. But I like to have a save before certain fights just to redo them since the combat is awesome and some bosses are so fun
@@JasonDunna Yep. Some fights are definitely worth a second or third run just for fun. I also always babysit allied/friendly NPC. On my first run, I cleared Moonrise Towers before the final fight, to avoid Jaheira committing suicide. I failed with the merchants, though, who were yellow but then got hostile. Will try to do better this run. I wish there was a more challenging difficulty after Tactician, with 2 casters, a fighter, and Astarion as thief/gloomstalker you just steamroll them. Often I try to aggro as many as possible to have more fun. I must say, I've played old TW titles for years and I enjoy epic battles.
Hahaha yea the infamous Jaheira protection fight. That fight is stressful every time I play through act 2. Thankfully the end of the act is so epic
@@JasonDunna I completed the whole Cursed Lands run, then Moonrise Towers, and when all was done, I cleaned up the whole fortress including the rooftop. Keth engages you but you can disengage and retreat safely with dashing. This before entering Act 2 and freeing the Nightsong. Afterward, when you return to the Towers for the final fight, all the harpers are just standing there without anyone to fight. Head to the roof and you can quickly get rid of Keth who's alone. If you need more than one run, have an eye on Jaheira so she doesn't do dumb moves and you're set.
I've played Entertainer (twice), Guild Artisan, and Haunted One (3 times). Guild Artisan is the best, but Haunted One... S tier! I remember getting inspiration for killing a huge bunch of enemies in one combat. If you go the evil route, you also get more inspiration as well. I really enjoyed both coins of the Dark Urge narrative, but I think I got more inspiration on my evil run.
Yeah dark urge gets the most inspiration from being evil youâre so right on that hahaha. I really enjoy the resist dark urge playthrough. Dark urge is the best origin I think, but the background is a bit more limiting compared to others, although itâs not that big of a deal!
@@JasonDunna redeemed Durge is the best narrative in the game, simply put. 2 of my Durges were heroic, 1 was evil incarnate.
Unless you mod the game, you're limited to 4 inspiration.
I'm usually maxed out on redemption durge. Honestly, I don't see a downside.
IMO, some backgrounds give 2 useful skills; (charlatan, criminal, soldier, urchin); some give 1 useful skill; (entertainer, guild artisan, haunted one, noble), and some don't give a useful skill; (acolyte, folk hero, outlander, sage). But persuasion is an important enough skill to make guild artisan and noble good choices.
@@travishartzler9155 well said! Persuasion is the most important skill for good aligned characters. I out the Sage high because itâs the only way you can bank inspiration by gathering the books but not reading them until you need the extra inspiration. Can be useful in honor mode
Guild artisan is my new favourite due to a recent playthrough and me and my partner started to notice how much more inspiration I was getting compared to her character. Plus kinda like the story of a Guild Artisan Tav going with Karlach in act 3. Wont spoil why but those who know, know why. đ
Hahahaha I know exactly what youâre talking about with Karlach itâs pretty funny. The guild artisan is solid, so much extra inspiration
Obviously, the best background is Canadian. You get a +2 to Charisma. And a +1 to the secret seduction roles when romancing.
Hahaha and a +5 to eh!
@@JasonDunna in Minnesota we say Ope. Lol
Persuasion also gives you better selling/buying prices in shops, easily the best skill for a main character
I love go with Sorcerer as your Main Character and pick Sage and for class Proficiency pick Deception and Persuasion.
Great choices!
I appreciated the hint about reading rare books for inspiration. I need to find a list of rare books, give them all to Gale, and see if I can scrounge up some more XP that way.
I often combine Wood Elf with the Charlatan. That gets you Stealth, Perception, Sleight of Hand, and Deception proficiencies. Great if you want your party face to also take care of all of the rogue jobs.
I also appreciate the tip with Guild artisan of going from merchant to merchant getting inspiration from each one.
Anything for more XP. :-)
Those two backgrounds are great for being able to basically store your inspiration for later! I find the guild artisan has a lot of ways to gain inspiration itâs probably the best if you really want to min-max!
Glad you enjoyed, have a great day!
Halsin also has the folk hero background
Edit: I stand corrected. Halsin has the outlander background
Yeaaa both end up being some of the worst backgrounds too hahaha
The charisma skills will make the game much easier, especially in act 2. You can persuade Yurgir to help you in the Raphael fight and the final battle which is invaluable to me.
Urchin is definitely my favourite, Acolyte is good too, though....One time i played a criminal but completely forgot i chose that as my background and did *not* act like a criminal at all...well, i mean i didn't *steal* anything, my character was a rampaging murderer tho, but that's to be excpected lmfao
Imagine this exact video except it's the same backgrounds but from MTG! I can tell you, Folk Hero is definitely S Tier then!!
Hahahaha yeah I mean murder is still criminal đđ the urchin is a good background for a thief. Yeah I chose folk hero and didnât realize itâs covered twice by companions and itâs not fantastic either hahaha
@@JasonDunna outlander too, it's also covered by halsin and karlach, right? Urchin is one of my favs
@@MulderHiggins yea exactly! Funny how the ones that are covered by two of our teammates are the worst technically
@@JasonDunna everyone knows the best background is haunted one đ charlatan gets a lot of inspiritation, but not as much as haunted one, dude
Maybe YOU get a lot of Inspiration from haunted one because of all the killing đđ I did 2 resist dark urge and it was pretty sparse in comparison. Dark urge is the best origin though
Hey just a quick comment (since it bothers me lol), I canât tell if you are side glancing for the script, but if you are maybe post-its/text docs on the screen can help? Itâs a bit distracting since the face cam is quite big and quite noticeable
Haha yeah I have my notes on my other monitor. I have 4 monitors running different stuff for the videos at all times (game, tier list, recording software, and my notes) I try to minimize it by memorizing as much as possible but Iâm only human hahaha
@@JasonDunna Even with it being noticeable, doesn't bother me. Literally reading it to give the info on it. I don't need to stare into your eyes for the whole video XD. Good job, love watching your videos. Always fun seeing a perspective with rime and reason behind it in a tier list.
Astarion isn't an urchin? Seems false
@@garzarobert20 it would make sense but you can look for yourself if you donât believe it! Prior to the game he was a Magistrate in the city so his background does make sense
@JasonDunna I feel like both could make sense but yeah I went to check lol
