Is it possible to BAKE BREAD on a TRANGIA MINI?

  • My attempt to bake fresh bread on the Trangia Mini. It tasted amazing and was welcome on this chilly morning. The trangia cook sets are incredible. But what are their limits?
    This was my experiment at home for a better cooking experience while hiking on the trail. I didn't get the bread to rise as much as I would have liked but this illustrates exactly the point that it's important to practice what you intend to do before you head out to hike on the trail.

    INGREDIENTS (Serves one small portion)
    25g flour
    15g rolled oats
    teaspoon milk powder
    pinch salt
    large pinch sugar
    half a teaspoon dry yeast.
    15ml water
    tiny glug of olive oil (Tablespoon-ish)
    Add warm water to bread mix in a ziplock bag.
    Mix and 'knead' the ingredients in the bag.
    Squeeze out excess air and place in a pocket near to your body for the warmth.
    Depending on how active the yeast is, wait for the dough to prove for 1-3 hours.
    Heat pot while in an oiled pan, push down the dough into a disc.
    Place pot upside down on pan and hold over the fire for about 5 minutes.
    While turning over the dough, reheat the pot.
    Cook for a further 5 minutes and enjoy a tasty, warm bread while out on the trail.

    Another great experiment. I am amazed at how versatile the Trangia is. Look forward to trying g for myself. And cheers for watching SoN. Sorry it took so long to watch. I've been up against it this last few weeks.

      I don’t even think Trangia are even aware of how versatile their kit is!
      I’ve been up against it too, the beauty of CZcams is it’s on repeat whenever you need it!
      Thank you for watching and. For keeping me entertained while I baked.

    Your videos are great, I’m kind of a lazy camper but I’ve made corn bread (pre-mix from the box) in my billy pot and turned out delicious. Someone in another video mentioned the mini Packs inside the billy pot, which I think is a brilliant idea, I just ordered this and plan to do the same. Your videos show how versatile this system can be. Keep up the good work and Thanks.

      carmen martinez thanks so much!!!
      I learn a lot from the comments on my channel.
      I think even when we put a tiny bit of effort in. That effort translated into a more satisfying meal.
      Thanks for watching!

    Love the idea of baking bread, whilst camping.
    Have found your channel after seeing you with Summit or Nothing. Loved the Trangia pizza.
    Love to see more from you and try to cook some of these things with the kids whilst out walking and camping.

    I bake sourdough bread and love it, but on camp I prefer baking it in a heavy Dutch oven. For the trangia bannock bread is the best. Much easier than yeasted bread on the stove.

    Looks quite tasty thanks for sharing. One experience I made during my hikes, always mix in the bowl or another plastic bag so that you can keep some flour if you had add too much water.

    • @OffTheBeatenPot
      @OffTheBeatenPot  Před 5 lety

      Absolutely. Also, I think that from now I will mix in the bowl. At least finish the kneading in the bowl as I get a nicer finish when I do it like this.
      Also I did a test run before filming and I managed to get it to raise to about 20mm. Sod’s law that when I film it, it doesn’t behave.
      Thank you for watching.
      Also... this weekend I am camping with my father and want to try your sausages. Would you be happy if I film how I get on with a link to your video?

    Fresh bread...uummm, lovely! Technical question...what would happen if you cooked the bread in a (fry) pan with no lid? Would it still rise? Would it be recognisible as bread? Would it become a biscuit? Would it be in edible? Sorry...more than one question there! Great little video.

    • @OffTheBeatenPot
      @OffTheBeatenPot  Před 5 lety +1

      +Ken Henley this would be fine to do.
      The pot was a little experiment to see if I could mimic a Dutch oven to attain a better rise. If I hadn’t have messed up the dough and or added some baking powder. It would have risen much more.
      A pan works great and on the channel Summit or Nothing, I made a curry with a pan fried ‘Peshawari’ bannock(ish) bread

  • @ChrisAuton
    @ChrisAuton Před 5 lety +2

    I've just been pointed at your channel as someone else who likes to play with a Trangia Mini! I admire your attempts to create a proper bread. I try and cook proper food either with a fire when possible or on the Trangia Mini. My bread however is still a cheats bannock with self raising flour and baking powder. Can make a great light bannock, but it isn't real bread though :-) The best breakfast one came here (link to the actual bit rather than the whole interminable video czcams.com/video/-B3HIyMCil4/video.html ) and last camps rescue (I forgot the muffins I was going to take) comes here czcams.com/video/5UDX4MES9iI/video.html

    Would it work better to use the simmer ring to stop overheating and aether than lifting it?
    Fascinating video - thanks

    • @OffTheBeatenPot
      @OffTheBeatenPot  Před rokem

      It could. the lifting is mainly for avoiding hotspots.
      And I decided against the simmer ring as I wanted a higher heat when I lifted. The main key thing I’ve learned is to heat the top. So next tim I think I’ll rotate constantly like a did with my roast beef.

    Can you explain ( made it a bit lighter) ? please

    • @OffTheBeatenPot
      @OffTheBeatenPot  Před 3 lety

      Of course. I added too much water and it was sloppy rather than firm.
      I would have also have liked knead it properly but I was trying to be fancy by doing it in the bag. Bags I no longer use anyway.
