  • I love all things Trangia, and for a little while I has some misguided ideas of the Trangia Mini...mainly, that it was too small to be useful. Well...I was wrong!

That's my favorite Trangia. I bought mine sometime around 1986 or so. It originally came with an uncoated fry pan. Mine got smashed accidentally so I bought a new one a few years later and it was Teflon coated. Mine's been all around the world with me and I still use it.

My main hiking stove, the pot, pan and pot grabber together weigh only 185 gm (6.53 oz) making it the basis of a very lightweight cook kit with a pot big enough for washing up. Two great additions are, the Varago small windshield which fits on top of the stove with it's corners protruding through the cutouts of the windshield and a round cutting board made from a thin plastic placemat with a bit of duct tape to act as a puller to get it out of the frying pan. It all fits together fine. I can send you pictures if you are interested.

I bought my mini a year ago and it served me just fine during my month long car camping trip to Scotland. I enjoy taking it to the beach to make fresh hot chocolate. Because burning bio ethanol is safe inside, I can use it to cook in my kitchen. Useful in these uncertain times when power outages may occur.

With mine, I made an additional round plate in the bottom of the burner holder so I can use Hexamine fuel tablets which work quite well. The plate is so that the original burner holder base does not get too hot.

Thanks for the video. The thought of trying to cook a full (or even half) English breakfast in a 6-inch pan defies imagination. I've always been a Trangia buff for 50+yrs and swear by my 27 (and if car camping, my 25). They are 'bulletproof', stable and dependable and are great in the wind. The standard Trangia can be turned into or away from the wind but the Mini can't. Add a decent windshield and you may as well take a 27.
I'm glad so many seems to like them but for me, I'll stick to my 27 and enjoy its versatility and capacity.
No offence implied for enthusiastic 28T users but watch out in the extreme dry weather we're having that you don't set off a blaze. Whatever others may say, the Mini is not the most stable of stoves.
Every good wish across the pond

I own the 3 different sizes of Trangia cook sets. The 28T is my GoTo for day trips. Yes, if you use the top/skillet as a cover for the bowl while the Trangia burner is placed inside the bowl it will sniff it out. You can, however, use the bowl successfully as a Windscreen for the burner IF YOU use a cast iron or stainless steel Trivet over the bowl. The Trivet acts like a controlled damper for the Trangia without allowing all of its air sources to burn out. I have done this many, many times. Have photos of actually doing it on the Silver Comet Trail from several years ago. The key to success is using a pot or pan on top of the Trivet that is smaller than the bowl underneath the burner. The STANLEY 2Cups works great, as does the smaller pot in the STANLEY 2Pot cook kit. Play around with it, you'll find the sweet spot for size of pot on the top.

I have this stove about 20 years ago when the lid / saucepan was just an aluminum part. My dad took me to REI to get it and I had to order it.
I lost the original lid but By Foot on Bushcraftusa showed me where to get the non stick lid that snaps on.

While I don't have the mini kit, the Trangia is my favorite purchased burner. (Favorite DIY is the Fancy Feast / Tomato paste stove.) Wish I had gone with the Trangia Mini kits. However, at the time I was building out 5 Grab - Go / Get Home bags. Budget was tight considering all the components needed, such as the Mini Sawyer water filter and such. BTW & FWIW, I like 2 alcohol burners for the same reason I like the 2 burner Colman campstove. Coffee on one while something else is on the other! 😉

I bought one for $18 as it was new old stock and got a deal because the bowl was ever so slightly bent. I bent it back and have used it several times. One thing that I noted is that the sweet spot for the burner is too high, causing the flame to go up the bowl wasting heat. It makes the cooking timer longer as well as the boil time. All in all not a bad little kit.

@@marcireale Oops .. a year later. I've only come across your request now .. my apologies.
      My Trangia 28-T Mods:
      * The larger two of the three Nesting Bowls from a 1970's Aluminium 'Evernew Camping Bowl Set' (bought new then and can still be viewed if Googled).
      * The lid from said Camping Bowl Set .. similar to that of the 28-T, just not non-stick and smaller.
      * The Trangia Burner and Pot Stand fit nicely inside the Evernew Bowls which nest inside the 28-T Pot .. 28-T Pot onto the Evernew Lid .. 28-T Frying Pan / Lid on top where it belongs.
      * The whole lot into a Nylon 'Sea King' Drawstring Bag that keeps it all together.
      * I cut a circular insert for the Frying Pan from a heat-resistant Silicon Kitchen Worktop Mat. This further protects the non-stick pan surface from damage during storage in addition to being useful when cooking / working on 'heat-sensitive' surfaces.
      * A Folding Mini-Tripod made from SS Bicycle Spokes and thin-gauge wire serves as a stand (it fits inside the Trangia Pot Stand) when using any of the smaller-diameter Evernew Bowls on the Burner.
      * To keep the Trangia Pot Grip closed during storage, a small plastic cable tie, sized to suit, superfluous end cut off and then turned inside out, does the job.
      * Additions (when required), are a 'Tatonka 18cm SS Bowl with hollow Handle' and a Decathlon 'Quechua One Litre SS Pot and Lid'.
All of the above-mentioned nest / store nicely inside one another and make for a pretty comprehensive Cook Kit. One can add / remove items at will to suit the Outing.
A further Trangia Burner Mod. I have loosely filled the fuel bowl with 'Ceramic / Glass Wool, topped by a thin tight roll of Carbon Felt. This acts as a 'soak' for the Alcohol Fuel and greatly reduces the risk of burning fuel spillage during an accidental knock over. Even now, watching Ernie flailing away with a ferro rod over the burner makes me wince.
Burn efficiency does not appear to be overly compromised and in below zero temperatures, having this 'wick', lighting is easier with no pre-heating required.
In fact, burn appears to be slightly more gentle .. which suits my style of cooking .. I am not just a 'water boiler'.
There .. I hope this is of assistance. Once again, my apologies for the delay.

To fit the Keith plate slightly crimp the edge of Outer ti pot, add the 28 pot grabber, a Titanium burner and the Lixada 2 part SS Windshield / Potstand... Hay Presto a 27 size, 28 mini style kit.

I know this is an odd question, but are those Kupika Items the Natural or Cranberry color (or either)? Question aside I have the utmost respect for your videos and all things stoves.

Pending his response, that is ghee (clarified butter). I ordered some sachets from Amazon and are essentially shelf stable (e.g., doesn't expire) --- look forward to his response to confirm my understanding. Happy Thanksgiving!

From South Africa, just heard, they have been discontinued...That's going to make them highly collectable in a few years.... BTW On the subject of spirit burners, everyone knows how to make a pop-soda burner, but I've gone a bit further and made an effective simmer ring and a snufter using a second soda can... Thought it would pique you courosity RGDS Warren

I love the Trangia pans, but my problem with storing the spirit burner inside is that it can leak. I almost poisoned myself once trying to drink tea, when the inside of my pan was coated in (non-food grade) alcohol...

Just put the burner in a ziplock lunch bag. The burner leaks occasionally in the bag, but has never got out the bag. I've had the same plastic bag for a couple of years so metho definitely doesn't eat the plastic either.

I've been looking as well with no luck locating one locally or online. You might be able to piece a kit together by purchasing each item individually on ebay, but it will cost a lot more.
