    The kitchen scene in the Raid 2 could really be its own film, it's that well constructed

  • @androssteague
    @androssteague Před 7 lety +54

    I love the kitchen fight scene in raid 2 but for me personally, the fight with Iko Uwais, his brother, against Yaya Ruhian in the last fight of the first raid, hands down the best in my opinion. Because that fight skips the whole act 1 and goes straight for act 2 and 3 til the end.

    • @RightBrainRants
      @RightBrainRants  Před 7 lety +13

      I love that fight also! I'd actually say that it still has the first Act, except it's just really small. The part where Mad Dog just stands there are reels that chain up, and stands between them. I'd say that's the first Act. But it does ramp up quick though!

    hey man, really great breakdown of storytelling in a fight scene! just wanted to say I know the action team behind Daredevil and the recent marvel movies, and they're some of the best performers in the business! what makes the fights so good from a storytelling point of view though, is the fact that they're letting the Stunt coordinator do his thing with second unit. a lot of other films fall short because the director has a big ego and doesn't want to collaborate. the best filmmakers use everyone's strengths to the teams advantage :) again, great video! if you're interested, I'm about to launch a series of videos about how to physically film fight scenes!

    • @RightBrainRants
      @RightBrainRants  Před 8 lety +8

      whoa, that's so cool! I didn't know about that aspect of shooting. so the stunt coordinators get a lot more freedom in shooting?
      that idea sounds super interesting. I'll check it out when you come out with them!

      RightBrainRants thanks man, and I subscribed to your channel also!!
      Stunt Coordinators rarely get a lot more freedom in shooting, but when it does happen, you get gems like The Raid, and Daredevil! I'm pretty sure on Daredevil, Phil Silvera got to direct 1st unit also for the action scenes

  • @MetFanMac

    In addition to structure, I would like to add that in a visual medium you must be careful to never let the look of the fight be disorienting (shakycam in movies, odd angles in comics, etc.) UNLESS you know exactly what you're doing and why you're doing it. The Bourne movies did it well, but it caused an explosion of imitators who did it just because it looked cool or was the newest fad but without any actual thought put into it.

  • @vonschuhart
    @vonschuhart Před 6 lety +2

    a big moment of the raid 2 fight that really highlights the shift to act 3 is when Rama's opponent begins running away and throwing random objects at Rama. At that point he has given up trying to beat rama in a fair fight. Rama is better, so for him to win he can't rely on martial arts anymore.

  • @TheBrokenEclipse
    @TheBrokenEclipse Před 7 lety +11

    Thank you for explaining that, it's something that I've subconsciously noticed, but never really realised - also, how great is the ending of The Raid 2's last battle, where 13 Ghosts II just completely takes over? I've always loved when movies lets everything fade away for a moment of storytelling where the music (if selected right) explains more than what words and dialogue could ever do.

    great video and great insight. i will say regarding revenge of the Sith, the chase across the lava was like the filmmakers adding knives. the the breakdown of the mining facility and the danger it posed to the fighters was meant to add tension and a new layer to the battle as at this point obi wan is struggling to get away to some advantage. while it's not perfect I'm always sucked in and i love it.

  • @chachiarcola3208

    Nice analysis. Casting the fighters is key as well. Similar body builds and fighting ability can be cool for the "tug of war" you mentioned, because you can see the fight going to either person. Extreme differences can also be hot - think of the Bruce Lee vs Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

    Okay despite the lava thing in revenge of the Sith i still feel that the final battle was done very well. You say a fight should tell a story and in that last fight showed how angry the two fighters were. Obi wan seemed to try and repress his anger and seemed more remorseful while Anikin used his wrath like a weapon why perfectly reflects the teachings that both adopted. Sith draw strength from hatred and anger while Jedi draw power from peace. Even so the way the fight played out they both seemed more concerned with killing the other than their own personal safety or preservation, the way they caused wanton destruction in their wake as they hammered at each other is testament to that. In terms of the "acts" of the fight i think the fight was supposed to be locked in act 2 where neither side gets the better of each other and they just keep throwing new variables at each other in an attempt to break the others guard. But like you said a fight should tell a story and in this case maybe it showed that neither fighter was better than the other. If Obi Wan easily wooped Anikin it would raise some questions in Star Wars 4 right? And Obi Wan in a way won because he got lucky. Personally i wouldn't change a thing about the final fight, it played out spectacularly.

    I'm just really wondering how well the Russos will pull off fight scenes in Infinity War. It will probably be a CGI fest but I wonder if they can still retain a sense of the three act structure you've laid out even as things become incredibly spectacular. They'd prove themselves as absolute masters of the craft if they can manage to keep the battle with Thanos compelling while also dialing everything to 11.

    • @bryangutierrez5
      @bryangutierrez5 Před 7 lety +4

      The thanos fight is simple in theory. Extremely difficult to pull off in practice. Firstly, this videos mainly covers one v one and more specifically one v one fist fights,. That will not be the Thanos vs Avengers/Guardians fight, thus the same rules wont apply. It will likely involve super powers, alien subordinates, guns, bombs, and reality warping. For an example of what it should look like just use the Avengers protecting New York city from the Chitauri.
      The difference here will be that Thanos should be able to take out the majority of Avengers without much difficulty. This means instead of being a balanced power struggle, it'll be a desperate last stand.

    The tug-of-war referred to here is what Peter Russell calls "good news, bad news" and is a device used in Suspense/Thrillers. It's all about putting the hero in danger so we get anxious, then removing the threat so we relax, then repeating this over and over.

The action in those movies is laughably bad. It's barely a step up from Power Rangers.

  • @kylnan
    @kylnan Před 6 lety

  • @LightningStrike1212
    @LightningStrike1212 Před 4 lety

    I wouldn't say the Raid fight scene is the perfect fight scene because it went on a bit too long. The fight goes on for too long and this was not accompanied by a nice variation in pace. After the beginning, the fighters didn't separate too many times to pause. In my opinion, the transition to a knife fight came too late, when the bad guy was already too battered. Plus, when a character gets hit too many times and the same fast pace is kept, then the hits start losing some of their impact. Another important part of a fight scene is how well the actors sell their punches and how pretty or clever the choreography is (The Raid is great in this department). There is a marked difference between fight scenes involving trained fighters and those involving actors with limited fighting experience. Specifically, trained fighters or stunt performers throw punches that have more force and speed and generally look like they would be devastating if they connect. This is because they have greater control over their bodies and can afford to throw a punch without actually hurting someone. In terms of how clever the choreography is, the final fight scene from Fist of Legend was long, but it kept things fresh through the sheer variety of the moves displayed. It told the story of Chen Zhen learning how to adapt to the fighting style of his opponent, so it wasn't just a desperate fight for his life.

  • @AlekseyMaksimovichPeshkov

    You are aware that this fight isn’t very realistic right? Like, in real life I don’t fights ever last that long and two: that’s a really dumb way to wield karmabits (go watch a video about how to wield one) and yes, I know, the assassin get hit in the head a bunch before he pulls out his weapon so maybe that affected the way he used them but then why couldn’t he just use his dual karambits initially in the first place? Isn’t that what you would do in a real life situation? Does any of this make sense?

      you could easily say that the raid 2 could have its very own anime adaptation, for instance other movies of similar fight choreography like headshot and the night comes for us (especially that) also could have the same thing. I mean the gore is necessary to these films as well among the characters and backstories giving it more of a reason (apart from being an asian film) to be its own anime. They are just too satisfying to watch. Perfect fit for anime haha

    I agree with what you're saying, but I find The Raid films to be terrible and their action makes the film's even worse. I disagree entirely. The Batman V Superman fight actually worked for me, even thought the film itself wasn't great.In my opinion, other than there being no shaky cam, the Raid films' action scenes are perfect for how NOT to do action. Just my personal, subjective opinion on the matter.Wish you picked a more appropriate example that actually fit with what you were saying.

      George Daugherty I have absolutely no idea how you can say the action in the raid movies are bad. The Raid movies are easily some of the best action movies ever made. In my opinion the BvS fight felt boring slow and clunky while the raid fights felt fast and full of adrenaline. It all comes down to personal opinion in the end though I guess.
