- If you want to know how to repin the sparrows progressive lock set, then this video will take you step by step through the process so that you can breathe new life into this excellent locksport training tool.
Today we'll be looking at how to gut the locks, repopulate them with a range of more challenging security pins, and then reassemble them so that you'll have 4 new picking challenges.

Thanks for the great level of detail in this video! I'm considering the Sparrows progressive set and reload kit but wasn't really sure how to replace the normal driver pins with spool/serrated/mushroom pins.

A couple of things worth mentioning for newbies so they don't have to learn the hard way like I did: 1) If you are not using a shim to remove the core, it should be slightly rotated from the locked position when inserting and removing it from the bible. This will prevent driver pins and springs from falling below the shear line and damaging components when the core isn't fully pinned or is held in by some mechanism that leaves a gap in the core. You alluded to that when reassembling, but I didn't see it mentioned when removing the core. In addition, the core should be pulled out in a position that prevents the key pins from falling out. I typically turn the core off-center then hold the whole lock so that the key pins are facing up and the bible is offset from its normal position. Although not strictly necessary, it's a good habit once you are gutting and reassembling a lock that needs to go back together with the same bitting. If nothing else, it removes the frustration of having to figure out which of the existing pins goes where. 2) I recommend using pinning tweezers to secure driver pins while removing a follower so that components don't shoot out all over the place. Just pull the follower out enough that half the pin top is visible, press down on the pin with tweezers, then slowly pull the follower off the pin and let off with the tweezers until the pin is free. This might be especially helpful with locks that have security pins or are master keyed since their positioning/orientation can matter.
All great points thanks - actually I do use the tweezers when removing the driver pins and should have mentioned that I wasn’t doing so while filming because it allowed for a better filming position as the pins emerged. Thanks for taking the time to leave this set of tips - very helpful 🙌

Sort of a warm up, keep the skills sharp picking and gutting/disassemble/reassemble skills. Even good for mimicking a troublesome other lock pinning that I’m having trouble with. Take care.

Great video again Fish, as a newbie at locks picking, I’ve made an expensive mistake, I bought the Lishi residential full set picks, here in the uk I don’t think there’s much use for them,
Well I think they’ll hold their value so it will just be a case of finding a buyer on one of the forums and accept you might lose a little in the exchange - for what it’s worth, I’ve also made several purchases that are not out of their packages!

Incoming fan questions for you, Fish. What are your training sessions like? I’m curious how long you typically practice picking each session, as well as frequency per week. Do you ever practice on the go or always at your home workstation? Are you practicing on just one type of lock during a session, such as pin tumbler locks? Or are you likely to mix it up and practice on multiple types, such as wafer and disc detainer locks as well, for example, during the same session?
Hi Andrew - thanks for asking mate. So the duration and frequency of my current picking sessions is really dictated by time available. I cycle 10 miles to and from work each day and will often have marking and planning to get done, plus I have a family so there are some weeks when most of my picking is compressed into the weekend. Nonetheless, I will have my Sparrows Revolver, or a lock project I am working on, plus a few picks and a tensioner with me at work and I will try to get 15-30 min. practice in at lunch or before my day begins if I make good time on the bike.
When I pick on the weekend I tend to get a few sessions in, each lasting about an hour. Most of the time at the moment it is pin tumbler focused and SPP - I do have the tools for dimple picking and Disc detainer locks along with bypass tools but I haven’t really branched out to use those at the moment (once my long summer vacation arrives, I hope to deep dive into those). I will usually start with some kind of training locks or easy opens to warm up and get a feel for the tools. Then I move on to whatever the current project lock is - whether that’s a CL or a particular model,of lock I’m trying to defeat. I rarely do anything else like watch TV or listen to music at the same time - I like the focus and quiet of just picking. If I experience hand fatigue or if I notice I am becoming frustrated, I try to wrap things up before it becomes unproductive but I don’t always get that right!
Finally, whatever I am filming at the time will also impact my picking sessions in any given week - it might be that I have to dial in my skill in a particular aspect of picking - raking or tensioning for example, so that too can determine how I spend the time. Of course, once I approach the Lock Picking Lawyer’s subscription count (!!!) and am a full time CZcamsr, I’ll have a little more time to dedicate to locksport and my answer will be very different! How about you Andrew?

As for myself, I usually end up practicing for only 10-15 minutes at a time when I get to sneak away to my office. That’s usually the time when I relax for a bit and watch some videos on CZcams, and I like to practice picking at the same time. Since I work and study during the week, I’m usually finding spare time only at night after the kids are in bed, or on the weekend in between spending time with my family. When extra time is found, I’ll typically practice SSP and raking pin tumblers, as well as jiggling my way into wafer locks. I actually just purchased some fun toys which are on the way: the Gridlock set from Sparrows, and the Sparrows disc pick, AKA the pick that LPL & BB made 😃. I’ve never attempted to pick disc detainers before, so I am looking forward to it. I’m also very much looking forward to future videos from you about them. I wish you and your channel the best and will continue to watch it grow. Take care!

@@fishpicks4531 No problem, I actually need one of these as, like you said the resin follower gets worn down too easily and this seems to be one of the more affordable ones.
Excellent video. However, the surgeon in me cringes every time your right hand comes into view holding the forceps (tweezers) that way...! I teach all my students and trainees to hold forceps like they'd hold a fine pencil for drawing fine detail - between thumb, index, and middle finger. Same goes for a scalpel. Much better fine motor control, and you don't have to flex your wrist into unnatural and unsteady positions to point the tweezers downwards to pick up a pin, for example. The tweezers just swivel downwards between your controlling thumb, index, and middle finger. Much more precise - relying on fine finger movement, rather than whole hand movement at the wrist. That said, this is an excellent video - really well scripted and edited, and making no assumptions about levels of skill. Loved it - thanks :)
Thanks for the feedback - I’ll need to go back and look at how I hold my tweezers now - I am always open to refining my technique. Hopefully I am more likely to lose a spool than a patient but nonetheless, it is good to pay attention to detail!
