    All my sparrows cutaways have been repinned with chess pins, ammo puns and scrooge pins.
    They're great fun.

    One thing I would suggest about this kit, especially as an all in one beginners kit, is having some top of the keyway tension turners. It's a different way to grip the lock, and a different thing to get your head around starting out. Sure, most locks can be bottom of the keyway, but it would have been nice if they added some top of the way for people to try on these practice locks.

    I think the Sparrows cutaways and the revolver are good place s to begin picking they can give the basics but after so long they are not going to provide a challenge. I agree replacing the snake rake. It did not look like it would do anything that the 2 peak rake would probably do better

    I bought this set three maby four years ago. It's a quality set. If I remember right I I payed about $100 for it. I thought it a tad expensive. But sparrows is quite a bit cheaper than Peterson lock picks, which is my favorite lockpicks, based on quality.

      BTW I ordered the Left handed practice locks with this kit, they accidentally sent one right handed cut out lock. When I inquired about returning it and getting the correct cut out lock, Sparrows told me to keep it and sent me the correct lock! Excellent company and tools.

    I have a hard time with the Sparrows training and practice locks without cutaways. I always find them crunchy and loose compared to "real" locks. Like fingernails on a chalkboard. The cutaways are great for learning and practicing, but they feel different when picking. Cool though!

    I bought the Night School set over the holidays (not Tuxedo Edition). It was cheaper ($70) and came with everything shown in the video except the 3 extra picks.
    I was a beginner so I figured I wouldn't need those extras. I could always buy them separately later. Besides, I really liked the zip-up bag and practice locks.
    Basically, I'm pretty happy with what I got. I'd recommend the standard Night School set unless you value those extra picks from the Night School Tuxedo Edition.

    I like sparrows picks, but the fact they don't even bother to make the handles a bit thicker than the pick itself is pretty disappointing.
    I bought the dark shift set, and they are disappointingly small and uncomfortable to use. They look awesome though.

    • @FriedPi-mc5yt
      @FriedPi-mc5yt Před 3 měsíci +1

      It must be your hand size or something. I’ve got a lot of Sparrows picks. Both with and without the dipped handles. I’ve never had a problem with the dipped handles. The plain ones are thin and hard to manipulate. I have the Dark Shift as well. It’s my daily carry set. They do look cool and I don’t have trouble using them except for extended picking sessions. Then I get hand cramps. But for a quick pick job, they aren’t too bad. Most of the locks I have to use them on are usually cheap wafer locks on upright storage cabinets or file cabinets. So the handles aren’t too much of an issue as long as I get the locks picked fairly fast.

    • @callyboygid
      @callyboygid Před 2 měsíci +1

      @FriedPi-mc5yt I've revisited the dark shift kit, and I think I'm growing to like it.
      I kinda trained my brain to pick euro cylinders (bible to bottom), which doesn't suit the cut on the end of the pic handle.
      I've since been onto sparrows website and spent a small fortune. Lol

    Is there specific kit or individual items you would recommend for a firefighter? We often run into situations where there’s an elderly person who’s fallen and can’t unlock the door. Of course, we can force our way in, but I hate doing that in these situations.

    I really like Sparrows stuff. They’ve gotten a good amount of my hard earned cash. I like their dipped handles. I’ve got one of their large pick cases that’s almost full of all their standard dipped handle picks. It sits right next to my chair for when I get a new lock to pick. Good quality picks at a fair price.

    On the subreddit and discord, people have criticized Sparrows for allegedly chamfering the chambers on those locks; what are your thoughts on that? Or for that matter, chamfering in general? I'm not sure what the goal is, if that would help or hurt when picking; I would assume the easier the pins can pop onto the "shelf" or outside of the plug (I'm assuming that's why the chamfering), the easier they could also slide back off of it and drop, esp when counter rotation comes into play with spools.

Looking to see where it stands compared to all the other good steels out there as Sparrows seems to have gone down hill somewhat lately even going so far as copying other companies rather than blazing their own trail.

    People are critical of Sparrows quality going downhill, but I know you work with them and put out some cool gear. My issue with Sparrows, is that the rubberized handles should be a default, not an add on. Anyone's picks will just cut into your hands if bare metal. CI and Southern Specialties does laminated handles. Sparrows Canada told me the Monkey Paw set would have handles in mid October BUT they still don't have handles, not even an option on their site. How the heck can they be made in Canada but you can't even coat the handles in your own country? So many better handle companies, bare picks are of no interest to anyone these days. Sparrows should send me a set of Monkey Paws with rubberized handles for free just for lying to me.

    • @stanmarsh2499
      @stanmarsh2499 Před 3 měsíci +4

      Yup. Sparrows is slacking/lacking big time. Tier 2 metal. Inadequate polishing. Bare handles. If anyone else made the monkey paw sparrows would get 0 of my dollars. CI offers a better product in every way.

My above statement comes from being a professional locksmith in Austin and using these tools every day to make a living.
