    What makes this fight so amazing is that it’s so unique compared to previous RWBY fights, but not just cuz it’s a pure gun duel, but rather it’s a fight in which both combatants are using /completely/ different approaches of combat to win. Ironwood is the more traditional RWBY fighter, he uses more physics defying combat styles along with moment boosting weapons to overpower his opponent. Watts however is not, he’s a tactical cheater who is fully aware of his own strengths & limits compared to the other combatants in his world, so he manipulates the stage to fight FOR him & is constantly retreating to deny James the chance of physically overpowering him. The entire fight is him going “I know I can’t beat you in a typical fight, so I WILL NOT ALLOW THIS TO BE A TYPICAL FIGHT.” It’s so great cuz it’s the only battle in the show like this so far. It’s almost like a RWBY character vs a normal Human in some respects.

And to be fair, his fear and paranoia are really justified: Watts and Tyrian were sneaking around causing , Jacque almost fucked everything, Ruby hid the truth of Salem from him, fucking Blake and Yang ruined his plan and told the annoying prick and then when a giant army of Grimm come he is forced to make the decision to sacrifice the many to save a few or risk losing all to save everything. On top of that was the shit at Beacon where he was kinda proven right but also had to be the one to take the blame for the hacking of his androids due to a bad decision by him that he couldn't have foreseen.

      He created the political crisis that Watts exploited to his advantage. He's directly told how he looks like a tyrant to others and straight up says he dosent care, even though negativity and division=Salem wins.
      Ruby lied to him because he was looking shady as hell, wich as he's shown was the right call. Blake and Yang telling Robyn led to the closest thing resembling progress and he screwed things up yet again.
      The stuff at beacon Especailly dosent prove him right, he was told by Ozpin several times that his military presence was a bad idea, and during the fall of beacon Cinder uses the military presence to cause distrust and make the fall of beacon worse

    • @mitchellmitting6678
      @mitchellmitting6678 Před 4 lety +133

      @@brianbrush5107 I think it's hilerious you start by saying "He wasn't right". I said he wasn't right, I said he was correct. Sure, everything can be led back to his decisions, but the reasons he's decisions ended badly wasn't exactly his fault alone, but the fault of those around him too.
      Ironwood didn't exactly CREATE the political crisis, that was simply elections. Sure, Jacque only was in it to make the Embargo end, but it was Watts that pushed Jacque with promises to ensure his victory, not Ironwood's actions. And sure, to some he looked like a Tyrant, but there was no magical solution he could pull out of his ass to fix this, and while sure, many probably saw him like that, I guarantee that there was not a majority that said that because if there was, the Council would have had to take action sooner, not act solely because Jacque AND ROBYN said he was up to shit. And sure, division and negativity are not doing him favours, but Ironwood's plan wasn't "Make everything better", it was him trying to be proactive and united the entirety of Remnant against Salem. Sure, life being a bit rougher would suck, but momentary suffering for a greater good was a decision he had to make.
      As for Ruby, she lied to him because she didn't want to tell him he's plan was futile. He thought that if Remnant knew the truth and went to slay Salem, they could finally have peace. Ruby SHOULD have told him what Jinn said before everything went to hell in a hand basket, with a Grimm invasion in process, just off a fight and rejecting the offers of the most powerful beast in reality. Blake and Yang were THE BIGGEST fucksticks this volume. Not only did they exasperate the relationship between RWBY and Ironwood, but actively betrayed him and told the truth to an unknown individual that could be all manner of compromised and risky, not to mention Robyn was a variable that did not need to be involved with the plan to begin with, she was basically a thief and terrorist making life hard for the Atlas military because SHE had an issue with Ironwood's actions. So instead of just focusing on winning the election, she was causing all manner of grief for Ironwood, which allowed Tyrian to feign Penny being the attacker during the rally.
      As for Beacon, sure, maybe his military presence wasn't the best idea IN hindsight, but how was he to know Cinder's plan was to hijack his forces? And think about the Breach, how many did they save due to their presence there, and how many did the living members of his military save? As for distrust, well, that would have happened anyway, just not directed at Atlesian forces, but Huntsmen themselves. Ozpin wasn't exactly right or wrong. He was used to Salem and his war being more subtle, less overt, and Cinder was doing something completely unexpected by both him and Ironwood.

    • @brianbrush5107
      @brianbrush5107 Před 4 lety +16

      @@mitchellmitting6678 It very much was the majority, both sides of the election ran on "Ironwood sucks", and both poor and rich people hated his guts.
      When he finds out about Salem being invincible, be dosent say "oh well I guess the plans ruined", in fact the only issue with the plan was that they could not launch amity tower.
      He could have, for one, not be so militaristic, wich is what Ozpin kept warning him and helped the villains in the fall of beacon, he could have at the very least tried to deny that his critics Deaths were his doing, instead of going "I don't care what people think of me". Those are all things he could have done, and no he didn't know what SPECIFICALLY Salems faction would do like with the election, but he still created issues for them to exploit. Issues he should have known better not to cause. And you can't say that he didn't know things would go wrong because SEVERAL characters point out huge issues with his plans. But he's to stubborn to listen.
      And Ironwoods plan SHOULD be "make everyone feel better", disregarding the feelings of the public and letting negatively spread is the absolute stupidest thing you can possibly do when your fighting villains who rely on there being negativity to win. Ironwoods solution is the equivalent of putting out a fire with a Flame thrower.
      There was no reason to Suspect Robyn, her whole deal was trying to end the suffering and distress going on in Mantle, wich if successful ruins any Plans Salem would have, on top of her followers getting killed by Salems forces. And she didn't steal just cause SHE had issues with Ironwood, she stole because mantle needed those recourses, and Ironwood claiming they were going to a good cause meant nothing as he actively made himself out to be the least trustworthy person in the world.
      He may not have been able to predict that specific scenario, but he was told that having the miltary around would give the wrong idea that they may have been preparing for war, wich is what Salems followers used.

    Watts counting from 19 to 13 was well counted
    after the melee fight at 1:13
    Watts shoots twice and then says 10, if you watch frame by frame, the first shot actually shot 2 bullets at the time
    at 1:32 he shoots two bullets at a time again followed by a one bullet shot, then he says 7
    everything goes fine there.
    however, 1:59 6 bullets remaining.
    after that they start to barrage each other with bullets, and watts shoots 5 times (and none of them seem like a double bullet shot)
    that means he got 1 bullet remaining
    to which was never used afterwards

    Okay, so, because I see a few comments agreeing about how Watts should count in his head, I feel like I _should_ mention that he... can't? The reason I say that is because the dude spends the entire fight controlling the field, thinking about using, disabling and enabling this or that platform with gravity, activating this or that water geyser or lava trap, aiming with the gun, etc.
    Because of all that, if the dude _actually_ counted in his head, the numbers would be hella jumbled and he'd lose count/focus after taking like 3 hits. Ironwood, on the other hand, basically just had to worry about moving well, dodging and firing (to oversimplify.) It's not any easier, but it makes it way easier for him to count in his head.
    Watts also makes sure _never_ to count right in front of Ironwood and always whispers silently, so, it's not like he's being stupid about it.
    Hope this helps! I'm not trying to be patronizing to anyone here, I'm just a random dude who's seen a lot of gunfights, so, this gimmick is familiar to me. It's also a great narrative trope to make it feel more realistic for us, the viewers.

      The counting seems to be a stylistic choice. Fight scenes where the characters say nothing tend to be really awkward and strange, so adding lines so that a character can speak not only helps give more sound to the fight, but the countdown aspect of the counting also contributes to a feeling of rising tension.

    Credit where it’s due: for Salem’s Evil Genius (and by particular train of logic, probably the physically weakest of her inner circle) Watts put up a hell of a fight, here. If he was fighting literally anyone else that lacked the extreme resolve Ironwood had (or wasn’t as creative), he probably would have won hands down, and I can probably safely say he would have easily killed Jaune or Ren, probably even Weiss or Blake, definitely kill Penny if he could get close enough, and at least defeat Ruby, Oscar, or Nora in this same setup.
    Seriously, for the Evil Genius, he’s a pretty high tier fighter as far as RWBY is concerned if he gets time to set up.

      That's without mentioning the fact that if he had just been smart enough to bring extra ammunition to reload his gun with or at the very least a knife, he could have killed Ironwood when he caught his hand in the energy field.

Weiss is also used to... combat in environments with rapidly shifting gravity. She'd be fine. Blake, Ren, Oscar, and Jaune would struggle because of their lack of range and/or mobility. Honestly James' descent into evil extremism was foreshadowed during the whole series, but a lot of the fans have brains equivalent to that of fleas. That song is just another clincher, but nope they'll scream "The writers suck" to write off they cannot accept plausible change. When they're proven wrong they'll just say: "Fine I was wrong, whatever, now fuck off." Same with Adam Taurus.

      honestly, that fight was kinda really bad. I have no idea what caused the dip in quality, but all of a sudden the show went back to showing full shots of attacks landing in closeups that episode instead of cutting on the action, and in general there was a sense of weight that was lost. It's a shame, because season 7 has honestly been the best since monty so far.

    I love this fight for a lot of different reasons (The arena and abilities being such a unique contrast to the other fights for one), but especially for just how EXCELLENT it is at portraying who these two people actually are. You see Watts being clever and tricksy and using everything around him to his advantage, and you see Ironwood brute-force his way through everything (While also not being stupid, with the 'youre not the only one who can count' line), and you know exactly who these characters are, whether or not you've watched a single episode of rwby. The scene directly after this fight is also so good at showing the culmination of Ironwood's character arc and what exactly he's /become/ at the end of all of this, because like. Watts won this fight. It was through some last minute trickery, sure (that's kind of his whole thing), but if he was against literally anyone else and caught them in the hard-light trap, they probably would've cut their losses and let him get away. But of course, stubborn Ironwood who would do anything it takes to win wouldn't have that, and chooses to destroy himself, because of course he would.
    I have a lot of feelings about this fight and Ironwood specifically, and while (spoiler) I know we've probably seen the last of him and Watts (or at the very least Watts), I would not complain if they somehow survived all of that and we got to see more of them.

    I think Dr. Watts was the most interesting antagonist of Salem's inner circle, since unlike Cinder, Hazel, and Tyrian, he has no super strength, semblance, or fancy show off power/sword-gun-tuba whatever to back him up. Instead he relies on his intelligence to get by, and it was him, Tyrian being the tool in his experiment, tonsow discord and vulnerability into Atlas for Salem to conquer. For a quirkless dude, that's pretty impressive.

    I tried looking at this fighting without the rest of v7 as context, and I’m pretty impressed.
    At first glance, Watts is the smart one and Jame is the brute. Watts is controlling the battlefield and making James play catch-up. James dominates in close combat, so it makes sense that Watts outsmarts him. James fires his guns pretty recklessly while Watts tracks his shots.
    But then James starts shaking things up. He doesn’t fall for Watt’s trap twice, but turns it around on him. He can’t use Watt’s environmental controls against him, so James makes sure not to give him the chance to use it. And while definitely fitting the brute-force fighter, he catches on pretty quickly on how to cut the bullshit and keep his opponent in punching range. And then we get to the final scene, where oh-so-clever Watts has his gun to Jame’s head, only to have his bluff called with “you’re not the only one who can count”.

  • @KalavinkaK

    I honestly see Watts making a lot of tactical errors in this fight.
    0:26: Not taking a shot while Ironwood is suspended in anti-gravity and visibly caught off-guard.
    0:58: Deactivating his shield, which allowed Ironwood to more easily shoot him during antigravity.
    1:41: He could have fired a shot at Ironwood while he pulled himself up, during which he'd be very vulnerable. I guess maybe he didn't know Ironwood had caught the ledge in the first place.
    2:01: After freezing Ironwood in a position where he can't move, he neglects to fire another shot at center mass which Ironwood would be unable to evade at this point.
    2:08: Running toward an enemy clearly better than him in close quarters combat. Even if Watts didn't know it before this fight, he would've known it after their brief fistfight.
    For such an intelligent character I find many of these sort of hard to believe, but maybe there's context from the show I'm missing.

And in his current situation going against an immortal being of Grimm him losing his mind even a little is understandable. Ironwood was dealing with a lot not just bad things but his job in general.

    • @PeacePetal
      @PeacePetal Před 2 lety +4

      @@Pherretfish It was always a part of his character to do whatever he needs to no matter the risk. But what he was doing was SAVING LIVES. That was always his goal, since Season 2 when he introduced new fighting robots to keep humans off the battlefield. Season 3 he gave the students the option of running away because he understood how dangerous the situation was. Season 4 he sent Yang a new arm and defended Weiss from a bunch of Atlas snobs. Season 7 he decided to finally come out of the dark and unite the world against Salem. He was so likeable because he was so driven, but his drive was to save lives and help people. At the end of Season 7 he made the decision to leave Mantle because he believed saving Atlas was the best he could do. But in Season 8, he is literally the opposite of his formal self. He is determined NOT to save the people of Mantle, even after the Whale Grimm has been destroyed. He goes so far as to drop a bomb on the city just to strong-arm Penny. How is this the same character that stood up to the Atlas elite in Season 4? How is this the same character that went hand-to-hand with his own machines in Season 3 to save as many people as he could? James Ironwood was always a dangerously driven character with the potential to go too far, like he did at the end of Season 7. But what he did in Season 8 was a betrayal of what made him so driven in the first place. In Season 7 Ironwood was determined to stop Salem from destroying the world at any cost. In Season 8 Ironwood was determined to do Salem's work for her.

      @@PeacePetal yes, that’s literally salems whole plan. To divide them. She did exactly that against ironwood exactly what he feared happening. It’s very clear ironwood isn’t sane anymore and doesn’t think practically. That wasn’t a accident, that was done on purpose. Protecting the people wasn’t his only goal either, stopping Salem was also and he thinks only about the bigger picture which leads him to sacrifice everything he has to stop her which he even says and is exactly what happens. He isn’t written poorly at all story wide they made it very clear he was slowly losing it. He’s been driven into a corner and with no real allies and that leads to things like that even irl. The threat of him dropping the bomb was to get penny because she is very important of course. But that is still consistent with his character, to sacrifice.
