Many people forget this but Byzantium was actually on its way to recovery under the very successful Komnenos dynasty, reclaiming lands in Anatolia and rebuilding the economy. It was the Fourth Crusade that ruined Byzantium for good, not Manzikert
I once read it in a post, but Manzikert was not the immediate cause of the loss of Asia Minor by default, but the aftermath and the instability in Constantinople was. Emperor Romanos was unpopular with the local populance and the army, and wanted a victory against the Seljuk Turks to increase his prestige and legitimacy as Roman Emperor. After he was defeated and returned to Constantinople, after he was abducted and treated well by Alp Arslan, he was executed by court officials and the nobility of Constantinople. As the Turks advanced and settled in Anatolia, the Byzantine nobility was still caught in civil strife among themselves for the leadership of the empire. It took years of political instability until Alexios I restored order and consolidated some of the surviving gains to the Byzantine Empire. In short, the Byzantine Empire was doomed when the Byzantine nobility, which was checked by Basil II, started to act on their own accord and convenience. Had the Byzantine Empire won the battle, the empire should have implemented reforms to keep the nobility in check and reinforce the army and the frontiers against potential invasions from the East.
