    Thank you for the review! I've always been wondering about these Chinese Winsor Newton watercolors, good to know they're not fake, hahaha! They're like...a Chinese cotman to me. But Chinese paints themselves behave differently from Western watercolors.

      @@AllanJayQuesada Holbein, because of the Japanese painting style (mostly illustrators love using them) have a lot of convenience pastel colours... I wanted to see how they used it in a live demo because we are so used with using transparent layers, so mixed with white pastel colours are opaque and therefore ruin the transparency.. I'm really curious

      @@cazumbandoartmaddy1728 yes, i agree. Another Asian brand, Korean to be precise, is the Shinhan PWC which mixes lots of convenience colors with white. Unfortunately they are counterfeit I bought them. Bothers me how they steal a well known brand name that has worked hard for so many years to put out quality paint. I’m 59 and have been using this brand since I was a child. That’s why they are so cheap. I also got burned on a $13 designer gauche set also counterfeit. For those that are unaware Windsor and Newton Cotman has been manufactured in China for sometime. Winsor and Newton professional is now made in France. I suspect they either use a different binder in these compared to the cotman or they just use a little less pigment so the binder is more prevalent. For the price though, they aren't terrible, my first set of watercolours were Derwent tubes around the same price and they were soooo chalky. Maybe just squeeze the extra binder out and dilute it with water and they mightn't be too bad.

    • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for sharing the info. and i think you're right that it could be the binder. The price of this is really low that i couldn't compain anymore.haha. but yes, theyre really not that bad considering there are other brands that are way more too expensive but aren't good at all. I never there was derwent tubes! Im intersted on that.

    I'm from China and this kind of Winsor Newton watercolor is usually sold for primary school students because it's very cheap in China (it only costs about $2 for a box of 12 colors in the store) I bought it when I was a child and thought it was very difficult to use, so I only use it for graffiti. But then I bought the Winsor Newton Artist Grade and never used it again 😂😂

    Looks like I’m late to this party but bought the oils and watercolors in figuring they would if nothing else be fine for making post cards and to practice. The binder is disappointing but you made this paint look good, so bravo! I wouldn’t purchase this paint for a beginner so they won’t become disappointed. The other Winsor & Newton paints I have are student grade and will make up for what these lack. I may purchase the professional grade one day but right now I have enough of several brands that are pro grade so it will be awhile before I get more.
    Thanks for the review and demonstration, I already knew these were legitimate by reading the box even if I don’t speak Chinese because I used translation software to understand what it said. What a world we are living in where it’s so easy to read Simplified Chinese characters!

I believe these paints are specifically made for the Chinese market that's why it's in Chinese characters and are focused to be very budget friendly in the area. I have always been curious myself not just to the authenticity of this line, but to the quality it has, specially cause it carries a reputable name but with a seemingly to-good-to-be-true pricing. So i did what I thought would solve my question. I share information here on CZcams to help artists and also to end wrong connotations and judgement to sets. Hehe. I agree, theyre good for the price and can really work well specially for beginners. Everything that China produces gets out of their territory because of the demand from pricing, so, here it is. Hello! I’m a bit late to the video but I was genuinely curious about the paints. I do use the Colman and the professional range but I wanted to know about the texture of these before buying it. I believe it’s formulated so differently is because majority of the artist I see, uses “chinese” fude brushes which is commonly made of a mixture of squirrel and goat hair. So I’m guessing it would probably work well with those instead of our usual watercolour brushes. I personally own some of these brushes and wanted to give these a try as they worked well with gansai and sumi type paints (in which a different type of binder is used). Would recommend you check those brushes out! They can be challenging as they are extremely malleable and most often they don’t hold points well. They perform quite similarly to squirrel, but there’s a noticeable difference. It’s extremely rewarding once you get the hang of it.
    Would to hear your thoughts on it if you do give these paints a try with their brushes :)

But you could actually be right too, cause China produces everything at a low price, so it could be honey too. Thank you for sharing you insight.

    Thank you for your review! I just bought a set of Windsor Newton Cotman watercolors, the 20 tube set. I bought them here in USA as a major art store chain. In plain English, no Chinese characters, the box and the paint tubes read, "Made in China." Are they the same as the ones you are reviewing here? Perhaps they have switched their student grade paint over to Chinese production. I am curious to know what I have here!

This set that i reviewed is the line made specifically for Chinese market. dont worry, it's different from Cotman. hehe. I made a copmparison among the Cotman, the Professional and this China version. I hope you could check it out as well. :)

    This is in the same packaging and tubes as Reeves Artist range, except the lids are black. They have stopped making Reeves Artists for the European market, we just have the student range now. :( So I think the W&N China is Reeves Artist repackaged and the lightfast ratings will be the same . The runny goo is honey which stops it drying out in the tube. If you leave your squeezed out paint blobs to dry they will have a honey shine on them - the same as Sennellier.

    • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  Před rokem

      The faber castel in pans or in tubes?ni have reviews too of those sets. Definitely, I'm not a fan of the faber castel in red plastic case. Bad texture. The faber castel in tubes is not vad but its more for kids or starters. Pls watch my review of it too. These China version of WN, is almost just like any other china made tube sets, but its edge is that theyre recognized by WN as genuine. For the price its not bad, but still, there are still other sets more worthy of money. 😌

    I think the swatches are a bit uneven, the yellows and reds seem very diluted compared to the rest of the colors. I have a 24 color set and the yellows and reds swatch out a little more pigmented. I struggle with layering the colors but I guess it teaches me to use more water in my mixtures. Most of the blues and earth tones are a bit goopy but the rest of them are fine. My biggest gripe is that in wet-on-wet and gradated washes dry patchy. They make unusually harsh lines from the paint to the water applied to the paper. I also found they dry really fast and it takes getting used to.

    • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  Před rokem

      I tried to make them cover evenly. I guess it depends on how the binder has settled either at the tip or bottom of the tube. 😊

    QUESTION: sInce it’s meant for Chinese painters; perhaps they are better formulated for Xuan paper? I might get some just to try out on Xuan vs Marie’s Chinese WC.

    • @AllanJayQuesada

      From what I understand, WN meantioned it's meant for "Chinese Market", i believe means offered at cheaper price as thr Chinese industry offers low cost products of almost anything. It may be formulated for Xuan paper, can be. But i am not sure too as it wasn't
      mentioned. Pls let us know once youve tried both. 🙏

    • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  Před 9 měsíci

      That is obviously a binder-pigment separation issue. They may still experience this in other tubes from other brands, especially if they've been store for some time. Nothing to worry, though. Just mix them using a toothpick or needle before squeezing out the paints. This should mix the binder and pigment back together.

      So you tried puttting thsese chinese versions in half pans? Ive been hearing from denise of in liquid color that w&n doesnt advise putting their tube paints to half pans for some reason they didnt specify.. Hmm. I myself am not a fan of w&n pro and cotman. Theyre not bad ofcourse, but as compared to DS, Sennelier, davinci and Mgraham, those 4 are just way way better for me.

    • @crystalinedreams6039

      @@AllanJayQuesada yep i put all my tubes in pans cuz i prefer to paint from pans but also prefer to buy tubes. :D while the professional w&n tubes suck when put in pans they come nowhere close to how bad the chinese version are, once they dried they were in many pieces. I've heard from denise & others about w&n's warning about putting the tubes in pans but also heard that the formula being diff was their excuse which seems a no brainer to me - it would have to be. yeah cottman r not the best student grade, i thought sennelier la petite were better but now i recommend white nights professional rather than any student paint, much better deal & i just love them. funny that u live in a humid climate yet 2 of ur fav paints r honey based. lol i don't balme ya tho - those r 2 of my favs also. ds r ok but kinda dry here :( but i'll live with that for all those lovely colors. i haven't tried davinci, maybe will have to correct that. :) have u tried qor, holbien or schmincke, if so how did u find those? i haven't tried the 2nd two but the qor i find pretty awesome, first i bought the high chroma set then was sold, they r so trippy how they spread across the wet paper. :D
