I buy all the materials I review on the channel unless otherwise stated. I strive to be fair to every product, however my first responsibility is to the Viewers and Artists who watch and support this channel. - Marty Owings - Jak na to + styl
I always like watching your reviews. You don't say only use this paint or that paper, but give an honest opinion and give advice on costs and value. Like most beginners I can't afford the best of everything and I appreciate your honesty on the products you review.
Thank you Richard, I try to be objective. I appreciate you watching and I hope you'll Subscribe. Have a GREAT week! ~Marty
The Altoids tins are much cheaper if you buy them at the grocery store, Wal Mart, etc. Online, empty they run $4, but, you can buy them full of mints for about $2.50. When they go on sale I've seen them go all the way down to a buck. But out that way, throw out the minute and save at least half.
Good tips Aaron. Thank you !
for pans you can flip over a lego piece (pick the size you want) and use those as pans. i know I can get impatient and having 2 boys I have lego EVERYWHERE. but they work well in a crunch.
Nice tip Kim. Thank you!
They hurt to step on. :-)
+Owings Art
Yeah, and a bit of blu-tac on the bottom to hold in place. could use a Christmas cookie tin cause long but not too deep
lorrane Yep. :-)
kim ryan brilliant idea!!!!!!!!
I personally use the White Nights watercolor kit. It's amazing, the colors are so vivid and beautiful. Highly recommend for anyone who watercolors! Will probably look into the Sennelier set with tubes next.
:-) Thank you for watching. ~Marty
I love the idea of using my old small tins for watercolour sets. Thank you 🙏
thank you so much. i'm really new to watercolors (worked in acrylics for 4 years). i very much appreciate your breaking all this information down. there are so many items it can become overwhelming. again, thank you.
Hope you are getting the hang of it now Tela?
Great video,so much information in only 20 min!
I really like the DIY ideas too,I should try making a mini watercolour box myself sometime. Thanks for the tips Marty!
Thank you Kou. I appreciate the feedback. Thank you for watching! ~Marty
I spent months reviewing watercolor options available. You summed it all up in 20 minutes. Brilliant as always!
Thank you Annie. You're the best. Thanks for watching my friend. ~Marty
I have put together several kits made from tins. 2x a year I buy a serento collar for my dog. It comes in a wonderful tin that can hold 24 half pans and deep enough to include a sponge. On all the tins, I use the lid for mixing. It's a great alternative pallet and a great way to recycle those tins.
Tfs. Just recently discovered your channel.
I really appreciate your videos. Thank you for sharing your expertise and wisdom with us! I'm making my own travel kit from an Altoids tin.
Hi Ginger - The home made ones are the best. :-)
Awesome as usual Marty. Can't wait to set up a mini travel tin myself here soon. Thanks again for showing all the different brands. Got to get me some of those Schmeinke ones.
For sure Lynda and thank you for watching the channel. ~Marty
Awesome & very comprehensive review Marty! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Helen. Hope you have a great week! ~Marty
Very informative. I love your videos and have been watching you since I discovered you (back before this intro, which i love, might I add). Thanks for sharing your knowledge as well as your skills. I like seeing your demos. You just have a very cool relaxed way about you. It's also great that there's obviously objectivity in your reviews. It was funny to see my favorites on the panel when you were on with lindsay, Steve, Lisa, and cinnamon. That was cool. Again, thanks for what you do. It's appreciated.
Thank you so much for the kind comments. I'm so glad to hear you've enjoyed the videos and thank you for mentioning my relaxed style. It's funny because in another life I was on the radio and people would sometimes complain I was too mellow. :-) Thanks again for watching and taking the time to leave me this message. ~Marty
Oh my god! Thank you so much for this video! I can already feel that this is going to change my life!
Thank you for a thoughtful & clear presentation of supplies 🌞
I love all your Sennelier and schmincke palette's.
I only bought a Schmincke palette (24 full pans) once, I usually buy 15 ml tubes.
I always have my custom-made palette with me, it holds a mix of D.Smith and Schmincke mixed full and half pans, in my opinion, the best of the two.
It has 6 deep wells and a mixing plate and there is a place for two watercolor brushes, one oval wash, and my two rounds, a 4H pencil and it is steady and compact. Tomorrow morning I am going to visit my old mother and she lives on a charming little island with thatched timbered houses and a charming little pond with ducks and goldfish... so I am going to be busy painting if the weather allows it :)
Hi Aviaja - How did your visit go? Did you get some opportunities to paint?
Great video. I loved watching all those kits and different sketchbooks. I love my Stillman and Birn Zeta as well as the Alpha. The Alpha takes watercolor rather well and its great to use as an overall mixed media sketchbook.
Totally agree on the S&B Alpha series, also a great option. Thanks for watching! ~Marty
I've been interested in trying out water colours since I started practicing more with traditional drawing and this video was so very informative! thank you~
Glad it helped. Thank you for watching! ~marty
I decided on the Van Gogh 18 half pan and iit comes with a #6 brush, 2 10 ml tubes-Chinese White and Paynes Gray- NO BLACK! I chose it over the Prima Marketing sets which just felt to "crafty" to me. No info on the company. I am not going out sketching, just has a price point, lol. My Birthday present to me, and Aqua Journal and a GOOD set of paints. So excited. I love your reviews and to watch you paint!
Great video, Marty! I have a ridiculous addiction to travel kits, despite the fact that my watercolor skills are nowhere near high enough that I'd feel comfortable sketching in public. I covet that Sennelier 14-halfpan set so much, even though I have the metal medium-sized box that came with 18 colors (and which I tweaked so I could cram more colors in). I have more than enough sets and colors, but I still get all OooohAhhhhWantWantWant when I see a new one. 😆
LOL Ali, I feel the same way about these travel kits. I'll just add that it isn't so much in the kit, but in using it. Don't worry about your skill level, life is waaaay too short for that. Get out there (wear your sunglasses if you need to) and sketch. Have a great weekend! ~Marty
Thankyou for sharing this. I have to admit it i'm very jealous of you. Those are luscious dangggg
:-) Thank you for watching. No need to be jealous, I'm broke. ~Marty
Thank you love the DIY mini kits so cute and portable!
One thing I found some years ago is that Richeson makes a micro tin watercolor set with round 1/8 pan chips of children's paint. They are $2 or $3 and I bought two for my grandkids as stocking stuffers with cute train, truck, plane sort of bright color tins. For myself I popped out the little tabs of kid paint and used dots of Daniel Smith watercolors in the 8 round indentations. This is TINY - 1 3/4" x 2 1/4" tin, with a clamshell mixing area enameled white. That and a water brush fits in any pocket and so I tend to have it on me all the time. It's like finding pocket space for a Zippo lighter, I've always got color.
For sure Robert. I think that's the kit that James Nutt uses as well. ~Marty
Thanks for breaking these down. :) I got two of the Portable Painter kits and filled the pans from my tubes. I also got a QOR travel kit. I throw in a couple of tiny travel journals and a water brush, a pencil, and a kneaded eraser. It all fits in my purse and I'm good to go.
You chose wisely. :-)
@@owingsart
:D Thanks. Just got home from a trip to Hawaii and my travel kit was perfect! I was even able to paint on the plane. :D
Just a comment on the Sakura Koi set, their largest one (the one I have) contains a removable mixing palette so you can use the lot as a make shift table/canvas. It fits a 4x6 sheet I believe.
use the top*/lid
Nice tip. Thank you! ~Marty
Marty I am astonished by the amount of unopened unused watercolor kits that you have in addition to your own watercolor kits. WOW! lol how did you acquire so many?
Hi Tisha - Thanks for the note. Since my channel is focused on Art Supplies and reviews, I've just managed to accumulate a lot of them. I have too much really, and every couple of months I purge, by giving away art supplies to my local elementary schools (arts are in peril) and giveaways on the channel. Since I buy almost everything I have, it's sort of like giving away my money....and since I'm not rich, it stings just a little. ;-) ~Marty
do you monetize your videos? thats a quick way to make some cash from youtube and with the amount of views you get per video I'm sure you'd make a pretty penny
Tisha UnArmed I do monetize my videos, but you might be surprised at how little that actually puts in ones pocket. :-)
Great video! So cute those small "mint boxes" kits are. I am really inspired to make my own now. Yay : ) Thank you!!! : D
Thank you for watching. :-) ~Marty
Thorough and extremely comprehensive! Thank you!
Thank you for the note Jean.
Hidden gem of CZcams...... ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Awesome compliment. Thank you.
Thank you for your review! I am looking for my perfect watercolor travel set now.
:-) Thanks for watching.
Great video! Really enjoyed it. I'm always interested to see what sort of kits people use. - I use one of those Newman's/Altoids DIY set-ups. I call it "My pocket rainbow". Keep twelve colours in it, primarily Schmincke Horadam, but also one or two Daniel Smiths and Winsor Newton pans. I just love how portable a little kit like that is. Slip it in your pocket with a water brush and you’re good to go. Little Khadi 100% cotton watercolour sketchbook in my backpack, and Robert is very much your mothers brother!
Good to hear from you my friend. You have a really nice set up and nothing to hold you back. What size is your Khadi? :-) ~Marty
This was first class Marty...thanks so much for the scoop on kits :)
Hi Jane - Thank you for watching and have a fantastic week my friend. ~Marty
This was great I have several kits and I am going to make a micro kit out of an old snuff tin I picked up, thanks for the advice.
Hi Gary - Those are perfect for a micro kit, and they're cool. ~Marty
Great video Marty! A lot of great tips. When I travel, I usually take with me one 8x5 Beta and one 8x5 Zeta from Stillman and Birn, a small pencil case with a few pencils, some type of waterproof India ink pen, and a couple water brushes, one of my watercolor kits (dried in pans)(either my 12, 18, or 24 set), and a dish rag to clean my brushes. I always use a bag to carry my supplies so nothing gets ruined. I understand only taking what you need but I never understood the person who is obsessed with smallness. It's not that difficult to carry a small bag with your stuff in it. However, I do understand enjoying the novelty of a shirt pocket sized sketching kit because its is always fun to catch a reaction from someone when you flip it out and start painting. Something that bothers me about the micro kits is that since you have less colors you also need to mix more and they don't provide enough space for all the mixing so while its more convenient on one hand it becomes an inconvenience on the other. Kind of makes a slightly larger set a little more worth it. Thanks for the vid Marty, I always enjoy hearing your take on things. -Pete
Hi Pete - Great to hear from you my friend. You basically go out with what I go out with. I always bring a rag as well. I like the slightly bigger kit for the same reasons you do. It's easier to mix colors. In the end it isn't so much about the kit as it is using it. :-) Have a great weekend Pete. Thanks for watching. ~Marty
Great review, Marty! I especially enjoyed seeing your paper selections. I recently bought a Prima Marketing watercolor set from Amazon just for the exceptionally nice metal tin ($20), took out the paints, bought some empty half pans from Amazon (fulfillled by Jackson's UK for 29 cents each), and filled the tin with 21 half pans of my most essential tube colors. That's my favorite portable kit. My 21 color choices are based on Jane Blundell's 14-color ultimate mixing palette plus 8 of my favorite colors I definitely don't want to be without, like Sennelier's Opera Rose and Daniel Smith's Undersea Green. I don't put Jane Blundell's choice of Daniel Smith's Buff Titanium in a palette. If I want it, I carry the tube with me because that paint turns into a crumbly rock when it dries.
Yes, I was planning to make an Altoids tin kit with the Prima Marketing pans and gift them to a pal at work. They are nice, but I won't reach for them instead of my Sennelier paints.
Hi Lori - Putting together your own kit, like you did, is very satisfying isn't it. You are really an inspiration with your color choices, they seem excellent. I'd love to see some of your creations. Do you have a website or blog? ~Marty
Thank you, Marty. You've been a wonderful source of inspiration and kindness and knowledge, and I'm so glad I found your channel. It's been a fun project, making my own kit. I don't have any paintings online yet. I only started painting last July so there isn't much of a body of work, but I hope that will come. I'm starting to do more painting from my own photos instead of the CZcams projects I've learned so much from. I'll let you know!
Lori Jones I will look forward to seeing your work my friend.
OMG, I'm a art supply addict! you videos give me life!!! thank you :D
:-) LOL, thanks Addie. ~Marty
I'm going to be making my own travel kit for a vacation later this year. This was a great video for ideas. I plan on recycling my old LeowCornell pallet since on my birthday I'll be upgrading my size and all. Thank goodness I've got a big, sturdy back pack for the airplane xD
That sounds like a great idea (reusing the LeowCornell). Happy travels. ~Marty
Thanks..I have made quite a few watercolor kits from a variety of tins, chocolate boxes, etc. I recently found half pans for 12 cents on eBay... And using tube paints saves allot of money.. I do like water brushes but many of the urban sketchers are saying they prefer real sable brushes.. So to each her own..I love sketching when I can since I am a Full time artist and am at art fairs many weekends and creating my art during the week..
Hi Eileen - Trends come and go, but I think the water brush is here to stay, at least for me. Sounds like you have quite a great life. I'm swamped with my career, but looking forward to retiring someday. ~Marty
Another pocket kit I discovered back in 1978 or 79 is the Winsor & Newton Field Box, it's about the size of a thick cigarette pack of 100s and fits in a shirt pocket. Comes in both Cotman and Artist/Professional versions, plastic, grey or navy blue case shows which. It was expensive - $60 for the Cotman (good quality student grade) version, but well worth it because it included everything. Flat water bottle, white, two more flip out mixing areas, small pocket brush, water cup that comes off to open the kit and snaps back on the end upright, tiny sea sponge for bigger washes and strokes.
I thought of it as a silly luxury item but wound up using it up more times than I could count, replacing the half pans over and over. I now have the dark blue Artists' version, color assortment is a bit different but structure is the same. It became a serious convenience along with post card size 140lb watercolor blocks, my favorite sketch size for those pocket kits.
It stands up well to time too, I had that Cotman set for about 25 years before giving it to a friend and upgrading when an Artist grade Field Box went on sale.
Hi Robert - Sounds like you got a LOT of mileage from your Cotman kit. $60 well spent from the sound of it. Modern kits don't have much need for the water anymore with the advent of water pens, like those I highlighted in the video, but I remember when they were essential. Those blocks are a good size do know our micro-sketches. ~Marty
Purr thanks! Yeah, I do use the water brushes more now but the limit in that is size and type of brush. I now carry the Cotman one in my pockets vest all the time and replaced some half pans with favorite colors. It's easy to customize many sets!
Robert Sloan :-) You should do a video of your set up, I think it would be cool.
I'd be tempted but have some logistic problems making videos where I live and with the equipment I have.
😱 wholly ultimate collection Batman!
This was an excellent and informative video Marty, Well done!! Here's a tip for loose pans, when I checked to see if the pans in my Schmincke set would fallout they did, so I put a couple of Glue Dots on the bottom of every pan and they now stay perfectly, and when I need to change any pan all I do is take something thin and metal to slide under and pull the empty pan out, the glue dots are super strong so really all someone would need is the tiny size. Or if someone doesn't want to replace it but refill it, just squeeze some paint from the tube! I hope someone can find this tip useful, just another quick thing Marty, if you've never seen an episode of Color In Your Life on CZcams than I would strongly suggest checking it out, it's an awesome series showcasing artists in many places all over and they're slowly expanding further, it's great and I love it so I thought I'd pass on the info, enjoy and take care!
Thanks Hermoine - Are you talking about the standard Schmincke metal kit? If so, did you know you can bend the metal tabs on each side of the row and the pans will stay locked in? Sometimes those tabs can come open and the pans will slip or fall out. I should make a video showing that one of these days. Also, I think your glue dots idea will work nicely. Thank you for the tip on Color In Your Life, I will definitely check it out, sounds cool. ~Marty
Yep, I have the 24 whole pan set of Schmincke, as for the metal tabs on the sides they don't work very well. Maybe I'm not tightening them enough, that could be the problem anyways the glue dots work perfect for me. I think it would be great to have a video on that, as for me I'm afraid of breaking the tabs, than there is the fact that I'm not very strong so I do think others would find it helpful though. I really think you'll like the program it's amazing and we get to see how the artists approach their work, anyhow take care and stay out of the heat! Enjoy your weekend!
Can I come and live in your Studio? What joy I would find with all your paints.....how on earth will you ever get to use all of them or use them up even? You are one lucky artist! I do have the Art Bin you have...LOL....thanks for sharing this very informative video, enjoyed it a lot.
LOL, yes can come live in my Studio, I think you'd have some great fun with these supplies. ~Marty
This was a fun video! I love watercolor kits!
Thank you Julie.
Thank you for this very concise video Marty! I am currently loving my White Nights travel pallet but am considering other options as I'm going to travel France and Vietnam later this year. Also, will you be doing a video on how you store your art supplies? I'm always looking for new ways to store my hoard! :)
Hi Abby - You have a fantastic trip planned and you'll want to take some excellent supplies with you to capture great scenes. I don't think I'll be doing a storage video anytime soon, because my inventory is a mess, but I did of a video on my modest studio, here is a link: czcams.com/video/T7BO02JnVKQ/video.html
Thanks for watching Abby. ~Marty
Great video! with the small rembrandt tin, if you take out the pan holder piece and use magnets on the pans you can fit the extra row in there! just in case someone didnt mention it already xxxxx
Hi Kerri - Great tip. I need to try that out. ~Marty
Wow Marty!!! This was awesome!! 😃👏 I have the sennelier medium tin set. I purchased the half pan 12+6 free set for $60 available on Jerry's & Blick. I love it! I can squeeze in a total of 26 in the tin. The cost for more half pans range from 5$ to $13 depending on color. But you can definitely do so much with just the 18...no black or white taking up space. I definitely recommend the set and is more the 1/2 the cost of the schmincke 12 set. I just wanted to throw that option out there too. 😉 A very informative video. I just went and bought some of the Canson Montval waterboards you showed. I bought 5 of the 16" x 20" for $15 on Blick. You enable me Marty...lol 😂
Hi Valarie - LOL, you cracked me up with the, "enable me". You got great deals all around and I agree with your on the costs for Sennelier versus Schmincke. The Schmincke tend to be more expensive on the whole, but I only buy them when they're on sale and they are my everyday paints. I love the Sennelier, they're so expressive and wonderfully loaded with glowing pigments. Have fun with your Canson paper, it's excellent. Have a great week Valaire. ~Marty
+Owings Art Marty, I am glad I could crack you up...a good crack up a day is healthy.😉 Is there a big difference between the two or are they close enough that the price difference is in reputation and history? You have so many different paints/sets, do you find a way to use them all or do some just sit, especially the ones that did hold up to your expectations? I find myself watching now asking myself, do I need those or can I do the same things with what I have...I am reigning myself in. 😆 I hope you have a beautiful week!!
Valarie Connell Hi Valarie - Yes there are some significant differences between the paints. The Schmincke to me are much more precise, technical and consistent. The Sennelier's are glowing, artistic and wonderfully expressive. Maybe it's the French versus German thing, but they are both beautiful in their own right. I use most every supply I own at one point or another, but eventually I accumulate enough to give them away or donate them to the local homeless shelter or schools. I hope you're not reigning in too much :-) Thank you much ~Marty
Great and super helpful video!
Thanks very much.
All your videos are so unique...... Out of the box thinking... I learn so much through your contents
This this thr 5th time am watching this
Thank you so much.
Thank you for your very informative video.
This was a great video! You explained so much. I am new to watercolor and I have been watching allot of watercolor you tubes and I have picked up on the fact I can get away with 6 colors.....the 3 primaries in warm and the 3 primaries in cool. I am having a hard time finding out how to tell warm from cool colors....would you consider doing a video on that please?
Hi Deborah - Yes!!! In the meantime have you checked out Steve's videos from Mind of Watercolor? I think he has done an excellent video on cool and warms. But I can explain it further if you want to have a dialog here? ~Marty
I'm new to watercolour and your video was very informative and helpful. Thank you.
Thank you for watching.
This is a really comprehensive video. Your watercolour collection is to die for😍. How about a video like this, except with other watermedia like watercolour pencils, markers, crayons etc.?
Hi Colour Crazy - Might be in the works for a future video. :-) ~Marty
Sennelier looks gorgeous
I'm getting the white nights 12 full pan set, set of 3 pentel aquash brushes, and a medium moleskine sketchbook :)
:-)
Watched this again. Cool about the Bee paper. I picked up 50 sheets of 140 I just taped down. Give it the try tonight for affordable student paper. I am already a paper snob. Strathmore 500 is a new one for me but 8x10 cuts are a buck+ a sheet. Bee wont cost me my left kidney. I hope I can at least live with it, lol.
LOL, loving great paper doesn't make you a snob at all, just means you have great taste. :-)
Hi Marty, i so enjoyed watching this video! The big Schmincke box is such a beauty, isn't it!? I love the idea to create your own pocket kit and the micro one made by your friend Archana is just too cute! It's something i totally love about watercolours that you can have a lot of fun with a minimum of materials. It's so uncomplicated.
I have heard a lot of good things about the Stillman & Birn books. I am looking forward to getting the Soft Cover version which will soon be available here in Germany.
As i'm planning to get some more Daniel Smith paints i am wondering how to organize them. Most probably i will end up with the Mijello Fusion Palette with 18 wells. Actually i prefer the nice metal tins but with the pans, especially the 1/2 pans i'm always a bit afraid of ruining my brushes. The Mijello palette has very flat wells which i think will prevent my brushes from damage.
PS: Great portrait at 16:28! I love the think bubbles, if they can be called like this!? At first i thought it's Sigmund Freud but i think i'm wrong!
PPS: Have a great day!
Hi Anja - LOL, yes you're right, they could be thought bubbles! If there is any relationship to Sigmund Freud, I don't know what it is, but maybe it's my sub-conscience or about my mother...lol. I heard from Wet Paint that Stillman & Birn recalled the softcover books because of quality control issues. I think the paper was coming loose from the bindings.
~Marty
Marty, i love it when you write in German! Yes, there have been some issues with the Softcover books but they shall soon release the new ones!
Just ordered schminke 12 half pan set with space for 12 more. I have ordered some tubes and when I have the cash will add some m graham to it. Hopefully coming for the weekend.
You like them and Steve mind of wc likes the m graham. I bought a tube of pyrrol red last year and loved it.
Thanks for the reviews.
The set I bought here in uk from SAA is selling by them on amazon USA for $68 incl shipping, same price as uk.
Hi Big C - I am very interested to hear what you think of them once you've had a chance to give them a try. They are my very favorites, but not everyone likes the same brands as others. Looking forward to your thoughts on them. You got a good deal as well. Thank you! ~Marty
Owings Art Order arrived today. Amazing paints twelve half pans, they rewet easily and delicious colours, bought three small tubes. They are so far my favourite set. Annoying the case held the pans well in their wrapping but they slide about once that's removed so that they stick to the brush when dried a bit, Will have to put blue Tac under. To make up the set I ordered m graham only one supplier here. Order 6 get a discount, they arrive tomorrow.
Guess what I forgot to order empty pans!!!
Glad to hear you love them. I have a solution for your loose pans. They are held in my little metal strips, so remove the pans, bed those metal strips inward and just snap the pans back in. That should do the trick. No tack or glue necessary. ~Marty
Owings Art Hi final word. Love Schminke and m graham. Very impressed with the schminke pans as to rewetting I think I will gradually switch to these two. I still feel inhibited with expensive gear but for my third year painting I can tell the difference and it's my indulgence. Oh took your advice on the pans, it worked - still added bits of blue tac to be sure I think it has a different name in US.
Hi Big C - How much are you paying for the Shcmincke pans?
Thank you for the video, very helpful
Thank you Coran.
Heaven!!!
I have no type of money to buy anything, I just came here to drool over your collection....:)
LOL. Thanks Gabrielle. Maybe Santa will bring you some for Christmas. :-)
got the sakura one. very sturdy. very well designed. im obsessed with travel palettes they're so cute, it's a problem
Thank you. :-) Same here.
Awesome video. Thanks! I'd like to make a small travel palette, one I could carry with me all the time (along with a water brush and papar) and was wondering.....if you only has six or so pans, which colors would you choose?
Hi nknana3 - Okay that's a great question and here's my answer: Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine, Cad Yellow, Raw Sienna, Cerulean Blue and Titanium White. My palette skews towards landscape and nature painting though. If I was doing portraits, my colors would be different. And most Watercolorists wouldn't carry a white in their palette, but I come from oil painting and I use white for a lot of different applications. Hope this helps. ~Marty
Thanks, much good info as usual. I like to use lots of water and have yet to find a REALLY good paint tin for watercolor. The spaces are just not deep enuf.
Christine - Thank you so much for watching and I hope the video helps point you in the right direction. ~Marty
Your "collection" is impressive, so much color! it's pretty awesome! Would you say that Schmincke is your favorite brand? You've shown and mentioned others, but in the end both your portablekits feature that brand for the paints.
Yes, Schmincke is my favorite. But it's like asking me to choose my favorite children. :-) Marty
check out the frugal crafter for diy blocks. they are easy and so much cheaper than the blocks you can buy.
Lindsay is an excellent source. Thank you Kim.
I like that Sennelier lg kit it looks cute! LOL Great video/info
Hi Lori - Do you mean the one with the roll-top like cover?
+Owings Art Yes because like you said it looks like a purse lol.
CraftyLori It's very fancy, might suit you my friend. :-)
Great video! Also, I wanted to mention that you can find half-pans at blick's online store for 71 cents each (or full pans for 77 cents each). Just to help save a little money. ;)
I have the Sakura Koi 24 color set, but recently bought the Prima Marketing Tropicals set and some extra pans (the set was about $24 with shipping) for something a little smaller to travel with. I'm not too concerned about paint quality for now, but I figure that I can refill the pans with better paints once I finish them. I usually use a waterbrush as well, but every now and then I'll make the effort to bring regular brushes and some extra water.
Great tips Astrid. Every little savings helps us save for more art supplies.... :-)
Thanks for watching Astrid and for taking the time to leave these comments and tips. ~Marty
Thanks...I have found a few watercolor boxes at the he flea market...one was the small Cotman 12 pan, practically brand new with a koilinsky travel brush..$2!!! I have replaced most of the colors with M Graham, Schminke and Daniel Smith. I also love water brushes, the Pentel is my favorite, not too wet...I also like to travel with my Faber Castell Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils, Caran D'ache , and Neo color 2. I have shaved the neocolor 2 s into half pans and made watercolor pans with hard to find colors..
Hi Eileen - I really love hearing from people about how they found love at the flea market :-) You really scored my friend and this is a perfect story on how to repurpose and find creative uses for paint and palette. You're an inspiration my friend. ~Marty
Thanks...the cotman box,was in the original box...score.
Eileen Goldenberg Very cool.
Thanks for the helpful video. I just wanted to add that Jerry's Artarama has half pans and full pans for under a dollar a piece. (No, I don't work for them.) The dollar store can be a good place to find tins. I got some in the toy aisle, with little puzzles inside. I gave the puzzles to the kids and kept the tins. :)
Great tips Christina. Thank you. ~Marty
great show, Marty :) thank you
Thanks Rhonda!
Awesome video!!! I just switched to the Kiliminjaro watercolor book with alternating sketch pages and love it. I have the 12 full pan American Journey tin under the DaVinci name and find it a good match with the sketchbook. Plenty of mixing space, and my dagger and squirrel mops work better with full pans. Looking into your recommendations for picket/micro kits!
Hi Rebecca - I just picked up a Kilimanjaro from Cheap Joe's, and I need to give it a try. I really love the AJ paints and just recently discovered them. Who makes your mop brushes? Just curious. ~Marty
+Owings Art I have the Rosemary Pocket Brush--R9, I think. It's roughly the same size as a 6 or 8 round. My dagger is a Black Velvet by Silver brush.
Rebecca Page Thank you Rebecca, I'll have to check those out. ~Marty
I am so sorry to comment about a different sketchbook than the one you featured! I thought the American Journey and Kiliminjaro were the same product in different formats. Looks like the AJ has the Saunders Waterford rather than house brand paper. Feel free to delete my comment.
Rebecca Page No Not at all Rebecca. I genuinely appreciate the comment and the tips and I want to look at Kilimanjaro as I am excited to try that paper.
Something else that could work is to use a 7 day medi-minder; but, you would have to bring something in which to mix colors together. A 7 day medi-minder would allow you to take a warm and cool version of each primary color plus a neutral color like quinacridone burnt orange. A styrofoam meat tray that's been washed really well might work and it's light weight.
Great tip Donna. I think some DIYer's have tried a few things like that and it's very cool to see what they come up with. ~marty
I like all your painting
Thank you very much. ~Marty
what set do you consider beings the beat student grade set?
WetPaintArt online from Minnesota has a Schmincke 12 half pan set on sale for $64!
A great deal!!!
Hi Dory - Wet Paint is my favorite Art store in the universe and they are right up the street from me. I feel so lucky! They're awesome and that kit that's on sale is a special edition. Thanks for mentioning them. If you or any other Subscribers order from them, please mention my name as we have a great relationship! ~Marty
Muchas gracias. Thanks.
Thank you Juan. I appreciate you watching the channel. ~Marty
I have decided to buy tube paint rather than pans, and my next project is a 14 pan micro thin business card holder tin with 3 brands inside. It is the most economical when one begins to learn what they enjoy about different brands and the color options! Isn't it all so much fun? I had to watch this again.
Makes sense to me Terrie. It is more economical in tubes for sure. ~Marty
Would you be able to fit empty half pans into a Qor 6 kit tin. I would never paint anywhere other than at home and then just get a paint palette for mixing on. I'm looking at what to get as I haven't used watercolour. I like the idea of the Qor tin because it looks like it can hold alot of half pans but love the look and vibrant shimmery colours of Daniel Smith.
Hi Gelanda - Yes I believe you could.
Was that Schmicke pocket kit the 2016 special kit made for Wet Paint. I love the colors in the set this year.
Yes it was, although I think a lot of them were sold through indy Art suppliers around the country.
I am so drooling over the amount of paint on your desk, lol
:-) All it takes is a crazy obsession and lots and lots of days without coffee or discretionary spending. ;-)
You lost meon the without coffee :P
A .Vultink lol, just meaning I have to skip buying a cup of coffee each day, so I have enough to buy paints at the end of the week.
Owings Art Don't touch my Coffee :P I need that for my wonky brain to function, hahaha
LOL. It's a tough choice, but someone has to make it. :-)
Marty, I have a CZcams channel for crafters with physical limitations. I'm trying to find a watercolor kit that I can use and wondered if you could give me your input. I have trouble with watercolor kits as I have a half pan kit and I can't keep the paint from contaminating the watercolors around it because my hands aren't particularly accurate where they put the brush. I'd like to find a set for a newer water colorist that would allow me to put my brush in one color and not have the next color right beside it. I don't particularly want a student kit, hoping you might have an idea. Lindsay gave me an idea, but hers was 16" x 20" and that's too big ...I'd prefer one that's about the size of the large travel set. Any ideas would be really appreciated. Sandy Parker
Hi Sandy - Took me a few days and some experimenting, but I think I have something that will work for you. I had to try a few things, but I think I finally got the right combination. So here is what I did. I took a medium kit (tin) and used full pans instead of half pans. I positioned the pans horizontally in the kit (using the existing tab holders, which hold the pans in). I then left a gap (about a half inch) between the pans. That seemed to give plenty of room between the pans so you can avoid contaminating the other colors. Using the full pans allows greater area, so if your having trouble getting the brush tip into the smaller pans, this should help out a lot. This leaves room for only about 8 colors, but I think that might be enough to just start with. Let me know what you think. ~Marty
Marty, Thanks so much for your ideas, I really appreciate you taking so much time to really think this through for me. In the mean time, Lindsay recommended some watercolor brands for card makers and mentions the Kuretake Gansai Tambi Watercolors. I watched your video on them (fabulous as always) and saw Kristina Werner use the set of 36 and she removed the "pans" from the box when she used them. Since they are already larger, and removable, I ordered a set from Amazon. Your 7 rating was what I was looking for, to convince me to get them (as I'm never going to be able to watercolor well,) but love the medium as it's great for cards. It was so nice of you to go to all of that effort for me and I absolutely love your channel and was happy to see you live on a video with Lindsay maybe 6 months ago (or longer, time passes quickly.) I'll do a review for others with hand and wrist issues and will make sure to send people to your site for your review from an artist's perspective. Thanks so much...Sandy
Thanks Sandy and I am always happy to help. I hope you have a fantastic weekend and please let me know how this works for you if you decide to try it. ~Marty
You were more than helpful and I really appreciate it! Sandy
Is Prang good?
Amazing video , Marty .💛
it's helps me so much💟 , but the problem is am from Egypt and i don't even think i can find any of this here😂 , but really thank you ☺💜
Hi Ashraf - I really hope that the Egyptians, who have thousands of years of great art history, still make watercolors and great art supplies. Isn't there anywhere you can buy watercolors? Maybe online?
Of course there is watercolor supplies , but not this brands ,maybe there is and i don't know where and thankyou for your addictive videos ☺😙
+Ashraf Eliba maybe you could find them on amazon or other shopping sites ,I myself cannot find the supplies in india so I buy 'em on Amazon
All I kept thinking is how much fun I could have with a watercolour stash like yours lol 😜
Art supplies are only on loan from God, they'll be returned to the universe of art some day. :-)
+Owings Art True, everything is a loan, but one can dream a little too :)
Kyomii :-) For sure.
so many choices. Please tell me 1 of the ultimate choice to have or your most fav. Thanks
Hi Billy - I just posted a video that will answer your question if I understand it correctly. You want to know the best watercolor or the best kit?
both please
Hey Marty, I have been looking for a reasonably priced 100% cotton paper (acrilico) to use. Did you get that from wet paint or somewhere else? Thanks :)
Hi Shannon - I got it from Wet Paint. Darrin at the store hooked me up. You can call him and he'll send you some. You could also ask him about Fabriano, which is a bit expensive, but pretty awesome. :-) ~Marty
Thx for the video
Thanks for watching Angie.
Hey Marti... I just bought a nice watercolor set "MyArtScape" and looks to me its a very nice and extremely affordable... I bought it on Ebay and paid around 20.00.... Looks vibrant and consistent.... If you have the time you should give them a try and let us know your opinion on them.
Hi Walter - Thanks for the tip my friend, I'll go check em out. Much appreciated. ~Marty
I'd love to make my own DIY kit too! One question, what are the little containers you have inside the tin box?
Those are called "half-pans" to hold the watercolor. Here is link to where you can buy them but the bag: amzn.to/1Y198EA
Hope that helps. ~Marty
+Owings Art Thanks!! Didn't know they were something related to art. Thought they were just random little container :O
Have you ever thought about biting the bullet and ordering one of the Craig Young boxes? I have come close but that much money buys lots of tubes of paint and paper.
Nope, because I am broke. :-)
Do you think you could make a video showing how you can fit half pans in between the rows of metal tin kits?
If the metal section that holds the pans can pop out of the box (it's like a little tray you can usually pull out), you can remove it and you'll have more space for your pans on the bottom of the box. You can glue them, use tape, or magnets to hold the pans in place. Magnets are probably the best option though since you can remove the pans if needed.
Hi Dainty - Astrid answered your question perfectly! ~Marty
lol i only have 3 half pans watercolor from white nights, and a watercolor set from daiso. i have no idea how i could survive that.
:-)
The American journey full pans aren't as full as the aqua.: pans so technically they're the same size
When you speak of 1/2 pan, how many ml will that be? I'm trying to make a watercolor kit and see how inexpensive can it get. So far, i'm using a plastic pills case from The Dollar Tree with has 21 pill boxes. i will be measuring in mls and will fill with watercolor paints that come in tubes. also purchased some watercolor brushes and cut them to size so they will fit in the box.
I think a half pan is 20 ml and a full pan is 40 ml.
Ok. So where did you get the Acrilico paper pad? I looked everywhere on-line I could think of....... Thanks!
Hi Janis - I got it at Wet Paint. wetpaintart.com
Tell them I sent you and use the FREE SHIPPING code owingsart5.
Ok. Thanks. I already bought the new Schminke travel set and some of the Liquid paper. Love it.
Janis Vogt Ike
Did you get this year's custom set of schmincke watercolors from Wet Paint? I love the colors in the set this year for mixing; last year was pretty, but not as practical for how I paint.
Yes I did Jill and that is the set you see in the video. :-)
I love Wet Paint. Did you go to the sidewalk sale this year? I like going to the sale because I get to see people who I have never seen before. Also, I have noticed that Wet Paint not only has great staff, but they also have great prices for a brick and mortar store.
Jill Graf Yes! I went and I did and scored some great deals. It was awesome! ~Marty
i love my canson blocks mine are mixed media no warping with it and i can add as much too it as i like :} Shann
Hi Shannon - What sort of blocks are you using? What weight? Just curious. - Marty
+Owings Art Canson mixed media
Art Junkie Ahhh,, perfect.
Thank you
Thank you for watching.
I am getting a watercolor set for my BD and my dad is willing to buy me anything. Should I get Sminke, W AND N or a cheaper brand? Thanks
Hi Leonard - Get the Schmincke if you can, it's the very best. :-) ~Marty
Hi marty, I'm just wondering how long would a pallete last for?
Hi Ella - It depends on which one, the colors you use the most and how much you paint. I use Scmincke half-pans, I paint almost every day and most pans will last me 6 months or longer. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching! ~Marty
Owings Art What paper would you recommend for the sakura koi watercolor to use with? Something that's affordable and durable
