  • Elizabeth Schrader is a Ph.D. candidate in Early Christianity at Duke University. Her research interests include the New Testament Gospels, the Nag Hammadi corpus, Mary Magdalene, textual criticism, and feminist theology. She holds an M.A. and an S.T.M. from the General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church. Her work about the potential suppression of Mary Magdalene was published in the Harvard Theological Review and featured by both the Daily Beast and Religion News Service.
Schrader has focused her research on the way Mary Magdalene’s role was deliberately downplayed by biblical scribes to minimize her importance.
Specifically, she looks at the story of the raising of Lazarus told in the Gospel of John. In today’s Bibles, Lazarus has two sisters, Mary and Martha. But poring over hundreds of hand-copied early Greek and Latin manuscripts of the Gospel, Schrader found the name Martha had been altered. The scribes scratched out one Greek letter and replaced it with another, thereby changing the original name “Mary” to read “Martha.” They then split one woman into two.
Schrader argues that the Mary of the original text is Mary Magdalene, not Martha or Martha’s sister, Mary. The two sisters belong to another story, in the Gospel of Luke, that is not repeated in John’s Gospel.

The core teaching of Mary Magdalene and the wisdom of "A Course in Miracles" (ACIM) emphasize Christ consciousness, which is based on unconditional love, forgiveness, and acceptance. They teach that religion has been separated, leading to unawareness of the cosmic consciousness of Christ, misunderstood until this time. The new generation is awakening to the realization that the soul is divine and illuminating, transcending the illusions of the ego-mind and body. Women of high consciousness, like Mary Magdalene, were removed from religious narratives, challenging us to transcend the illusion of separation and recognize the eternal truth that shines within us all. Christ's sacrifice symbolizes that the body is not the true self; rather, we are eternal souls, spirits, and manifestations of unconditional love. Realizing this truth breaks the illusion of time, space, ego-mind, and perception, leading us to embrace the oneness with God's unconditional love.

Just as in genealogy, it is difficult to prove beyond a doubt that Martha was not just another Mary/Maria. There are some men, like Charles Stanley, RIP, who would never agree to what they think about the Bible. Some scholars in seminary said that everything in the Bible needed and needs to be tested with the words of Jesus. There are too many people who hang their faith in Saul of Tarsus, instead of Jesus the Christ.

Thank you, Elizabeth for such extraordinary and meticulous research. I'm convinced you are absolutely correct in your findings and it makes perfect sense that Mary Magdalene would have far too controversial and powerful a person for the times. But given the incredibly revolutionary teachings of Christ, Mary's high status is totally understandable.

Excellent food for thought, and I will read more on this. At this point, the question I have is what is being intended jointly by the depiction of Lazarus, Mary/Martha (as a single entity), and Peter in the Gospel of John? Assuming that the text has been edited to downplay Mary to emphasize Peter at a time when the Church was becoming more established and centered around Peter, the beginning of John 20 has this weird competition of sorts involving these three characters (assuming the "other disciple" is Lazarus, the "one Jesus loved").
And I'm taking "Lazarus" as perhaps a literary device overall in John, as Lazarus in Luke is treated as a parable, for the purpose of belief without direct evidence. I think John may be rewriting this to emphasize having hard evidence (and this is before the later texts were edited to downplay Mary). This also suggests that Lazarus is a symbolic character about a belief in resurrection generally, and the historical Mary may have been key to the development of this belief. She could have been one of the "pillars" like Peter/Cephas, which may be the real source of her nickname "Magdalene"--tower-lady. Even the use of the words "brother" and "sister" is suspect, as these can be used in a cultic sense, all in the early church also being considered adopted sons (or daughters) of God in belief in Christ.
It's highly speculative, but assuming that Mary was intended to be more prominent in the original John, then any text which shifts away from her (or from Lazarus) could be suspect, perhaps the result of later editing. If there were two versions (both actually somewhat symbolic in nature), the original with Mary alone, and a second introducing "Mary and Martha" as two sisters (with the intent to water down Mary's role), then this points to motive -- other parts of the text may have had different versions centered around the characters of Lazarus, Mary/Martha, and Peter, with the goal of shifting things away from Mary to Martha, and even having shifts around Lazarus (as his resurrection is deemed central to John's narrative of the Sanhedrin beginning to plot against Jesus-- is he the beloved disciple, and the competitor to Peter?). And this may all be literary, shifting and altering an original narrative (even just a parable) to be brought in line with a developing institutional framework.

I realise that Secret Mark is a controversial topic, but perhaps worth pointing out that the passages fit very well with this hypothesis. In Secret Mark the (unnamed) resurrected youth has just one (unnamed) sister not two. She behaves just like Mary M and is rebuked by the other disciples, angering Jesus. And she subsequently joins Salome and Jesus’s mother. In short, Secret Mark closely resembles the “smoking gun” single sister version of the story that you are seeking.

Josephus mentioned a man by the name Simon ben Boethus whom Herod the Great appointed as high priest after Herod married his beautiful young daughter. The daughter's name is Mariamme (Mariamme II to be distinguished from Mariamme I 2nd wife of Herod). This Mariamme had siblings who later became high priests, since her father was from a priestly family from Alexandria. One of the siblings name is Eleazar (Lazarus in Greek), who became a high priest for a short time (3 months) around 4 BCE. According to rabinnic writings, Simon also had a daughter by the name Martha who was a very rich woman in Jerusalem, who was married to a high priest.... Magdala, aside from being a village in Galilee, is a Hebrew feminine word for "tower". This can refer to Mary Magdalene's social standing and it can also refer to the tower in Jerusalem built by Herod, the Mariamme Tower (Josephus did not indicate for which Mariamme the tower was named for).

Spiritually speaking (gender aside), Matriarchal wisdom can begin with an understanding of the cyclical nature of reality (God).
Represented by the snake in many creation myths, the living cycle has a trinity of a beginning (head), a middle and end (tail). As above so below, the sexes were created in the image of God's cyclical nature where Mother is the head and opening to all beginnings and Father holds the tail to all endings (through which the sowing of seeds allow for the next great matriarchal rebirth). The joining of the two (symbolized by the Ouroborus or the marriage ring) is the sacred union needed in assuring the creation and continuation of new life cycles. To speak of the present day God as "Our Father" is simply an admission to our collective positioning within the bigger cycle.
As all mothers have direct experience with the creator quality of birthing, so is the direct experience of rebirthing the divinity within (baptism) belong to that which is spiritually matriarchal. (John 3, verse 3-8).
Sekhmet statues (ancient Egyptian) carry most of their weight in symbolic memory of what was a mother culture dedicated to the direct experience of baptism. As the leg shaped hairlocks extend from maternal breasts to the womb of rebirth, the lioness's head proportions are such that they highlight the bust of a second animal figure. The Lioness's ears as eyes and eyes as nose (nostrils) brings to life the figure of a reptile. 'Neath the halo headress of the solar egg, the lioness's egg fertilization process being internal (Set) and the reptile's egg fertilization process being external (Setting), such being key components to the safety of entering the trans-egoic or "born again" state. The life threatening fear associated with the predatory nature of a lion and/or crocodile encounter are reflective of the intense ego death experiences associated with the transpersonal awakening process.
In spiritually matriarchal times, illumination could be seen as wearing the false beard (ancient Egyptian funerary ego death mask) as the high state of cyclical self knowing; high cyclical awareness of both our upper matriarchal half and our lower (later) patriarchal half (compared with a mini lower body replica, an "as above so below" tail end beard extension); in full recognition of her civilizational Underworld; her inevitable cyclical destiny. The male pharaoh wears his beard tapered in reverse, indicating a pointing upwards towards the patriarchal head, divine representative of God's tail end cycle.
Mary Magdalene's anointing and wiping of Jesus's feet with her hair can then be seen as "Head to tail" (toe) imagery as she descends and "marries" her matriarchal head to his patriarchal feet, thus reenacting the understanding (natural descension process) of the divine cycle. (John 12, verse 3)
To carry the Ankh was perhaps to symbolically carry that upper and lower understanding. As the upper matriarchal womb symbolised the fertile birthing of civilization, below, the now Christian cross is carried to place emphasis on the lower (later) "End Times" Father principle of the great cycle.
Ganesha, the elephant headed Hindu diety, displays a cyclical head to trunk symbolism and points to the Mother head of his matriarchal elephant society.
A whole temple was dedicated to the ancient Egyptian goddess Hathor, who is the matriarchal "Uterus" personified. czcams.com/video/J0m0zJSEFK0/video.html
"See all women as mothers, serve them as your mother. when you see the entire world as the mother, the ego falls away. See everything as Mother and you will know God." - Neem Karoli Baba

I just have one comment or rather response to someone who criticized the portrayal of Mary Magdalene in the online series, The Chosen. Unlike the critic, I have viewed every episode of the series, and it offers a humanized and moving back story for every disciple, as well as a very believable portrayal of Jesus. As for their stance on Mary Magdalene, the directors and producers have correct information about her, and it can be viewed here: czcams.com/video/tdQ8HzV1Uc4/video.html

I wonder why Lazarus is not considered as the beloved disciple? The Gospel of John even says Jesus loved him. Is it because he is not part of the twelve? If the Magdalen is the sister of Lazarus then Jesus healed the whole family. In fact, while Lazarus' resurrection is his main story, Mary's story only starts at her healing, but also explain why she did not doubt in the Resurrection of Christ.
If however, Lazarus is the beloved disciple then his story also starts with his healing. It explains why he wasn't in fear like the others and was at the cross. Also, Lazarus would have the money to care for the Mother of Christ were as his brothers would be martyred shortly after himself.

It is probably a result of attempts to de-gnostify John. The Pauline and Gnostic form of Christianity was more positive to women, and they give Mary a very central role.
I actually think that Gnosticism is closer to the original "Christianity", in the earlier form of Marcionism. That is closer to Paul. I think that if there was a Jesus his message was much more violent and revolutionary.

@@donnakeizer1468 I think you are mixing together the content of Luke 10 and John 11. In Luke's Gospel, Martha and Mary have no brother. My argument is that a second-century editor of John's Gospel added Martha to John 11 and 12. This makes the text appear as though Martha's sister Mary is the same person as Lazarus's sister Mary. Without Martha in the text of John, readers would more likely connect Lazarus' sister Mary with Mary Magdalene (due to her many similarities with the Mary of John 20). Hope that's clear.

This another extrapolation and speculation to connect Mary sister of Lazarus as Mary Magdalene, thus also make her the first Apostle of CHRIST. Absurd and cunning, and those itching ears who run with this false presentation and witness, to likewise unlearned others. Together, soon all of you shall be shipwrecked, as for it is written, "The blind leading the blind, soon they are going to fall into a ditch."
First of all, Greek language written manuscript cannot be translated to another language word to word. Translators can only in their own mother tongue express in their own words, what the Greek writer is trying to say. Therefore variation has taken place so that a translator excel better and clearer to express what the Greek writer is saying.
Nevertheless, in context to John ch.11 and elsewhere, basically Lazarus had sisters, more than one, therefore Martha eldest and Mary youngest. On the other hand, Mary Magdalene is another person who was delivered by the LORD, where seven demons had gone out from her. Apparently, both Mary are not the same person, but individual character in the Gospel.
For example, let's say for three years i taught, trained and prepared few chosen student of mine to become major players to run after me. Therefore, under circumstances we were separated for awhile, had some unfinished business to attend to. And upon returning back, happen to meet a follower out of others to our quest, who provided support out of one's means since.
Hence, telling that person to convey a message to my chosen students, to meet me again in so and so venue. Now, does that mean such an individual not chosen and groomed to such a major task, consider oneself equally competent to run? Mary Magdalene was sent by the LORD to convey a message to His disciples. Who are to meet Him at Galilee in order for Him to anoint them with the Apostolic ministry after Him.
