How do Roman Catholic Womenpriests contribute to our understanding of church?
Co-authors, Sharon Henderson Callahan and Jeanette Rodriguez join FutureChurch to discuss some findings of their new book, "Women Called to the Catholic Priesthood: From Ecclesial Challenge to Spiritual Renewal” (Fortress, 2024).
In their compelling and carefully crafted ethnographic work, Sharon Callahan and Jeanette Rodriguez explore the contexts, calls, journeys, spirituality, and theology of women called to priesthood in the Roman Catholic Church. Posing the questions of how womenpriests' stories illustrate both ecclesial challenges and spiritual renewal, the authors encourage readers to thoughtfully engage these women on their own terms.
Sharon Henderson Callahan, EdD, is professor emerita and past academic dean of the School of Theology and Ministry at Seattle University. A scholar of ministry and leadership , Callahan has focused her research on both Roman Catholic and mainline Protestant ecclesial formation.
Jeanette Rodriguez, PhD, is a professor of theology and religious studies at Seattle University. Currently she also serves as Executive Director of the Institute for Catholic Thought and Culture at the university. She is a 'border theologian" studying Christian faith experience among different cultural groups; her books include studies of Haudenosaunee and Mexican American cultural identity.
Both Callahan and Rodriguez have performed qualitative, ethnographic research in locations around the world.

Depicts tragic ignorance, moral relativism, of a relatively small sample supposedly representative of "Americans." Pro-abortion propaganda by "Catholic" sociologists. Being pro-life is depicted as "legal opposition." Lots of double-talk here. The word "Americans" is used hypocritically to imply more than use of the word "randomly selected females between the ages of __ and __." Catholic moral bankruptcy is on lurid display here.

Her argument is frankly very weak. Okay, from the point of view of linguistics, it makes sense. But the words "room" can be interpreted in different ways. It is no longer appropriate to claim that we are originally women in the womb. It's just a ridiculous ignorance of embryology. Secondly, she claimed in her article that a man has lost his womb and that is why he is drawn to reunite with a woman, with his femininity. But how do you explain a woman's desire to reunite with a man? It's mutual. In general, when a woman climbs into religion, she does the same thing. She puts a woman first.

I love the "how could she not be seen as important" question. I'm afraid misogyny is the simple answer. I'm a confirmed bachelor 55 years of age so it is not a subject I know much about but I would suggest that modeling a relationship after one in which the woman worships the man as God is highly problematic to say the least. I don't think the questioner considered the implications. Lol. 🙂

It's so incredibly sad to read some of these resentful comments here... As a 37 year old male raised in the Church, 17 years of Catholic schooling, and 15 years as a Lay Marianist, it's apparent to me that the inclusion of women in the Church's hierarchy is centuries overdue. Nelson Mandella belonged to a group called "The Twelve" which like George Soros' "charitable" foundations, promotes what will destroy the Catholic Church. He said "We will use equality of women to effect the bringing down of the churches" He was himself of the Ubuntu religion which is the African similarity to Hinduism in regard to believing we are all one with nature force only. I copied his words directly down at that time (well over a decade ago as they were on the web on their site). Women have fallen for it out of pure clericalism for power and the C of E reveals that they are not happy with being priests but want to be bishops and archb ishops too - the higher the role they more they want. Such women who are ignorant of their faith and place in the catholic faith based on the Gospel. Jesus did not choose 12 men without good reason to be made priests at the Last Supper. He was the Sonm of God and only did as His union with the Father and the Holy Spirit led Him. Women deacons were people who took the "blessed bread" to the sick - this was not the Holy Eucharist, but literally bread that had been blessed only. The Orthodox still do this and all of us at leaving the Divine Liturgy, and to whom the sacrament was denied on account of our catholicity, were all given a peice of blessed bread as we left the church. St Threse speaks of taking the blessed bread to someone in her autobiography - it was not the Holy Eucharist. The French kept up the custom where others let it go.

Paul Collins despite a degree in theology isn’t very well versed in Church teaching, making poor statements like the Pope is infallible which no one in the history of the Church believed. Paul was rightfully defrocked, thank goodness. And we’re all better for it.
