- I convert this 53 Series Detroit Diesel from using cartridge style fuel filters to using spin-on fuel filters. Below are the relevant part numbers.
Primary filter base: 5148023
Secondary filter base: 5148171

There's nothing wrong with cartridge oil or fuel filters, you just have to be strong to hold the housing up to the gasket against spring tension. It's amazing what these little Detroit's can do in Log Skidders skidders, scrapers etc.
My 3-53 has already had these installed, thankfully. Now I want the oil filter conversion!
Nice! Let me know if you figure out a way to convert the oil filter, because that would be really nice to have!
There's a conversion kit for the oil filter, but it leaks . I put the cartridge filter back in
Great that conversation was made. I group I volunteer with had a cartridge filter on a 6-71 in a bus. Worked fine for years, but eventually the seal went bad and would leak bad on a cold start until some heat was in the engine. Cheaper to get a spin on adapter and filters.
Thanks for great video !!, yep I had to change the filter set up on my 353 to filters ready available in England , and had to get adapters for pipe fittings , one thing I learn from USA enginering is straightforward , like the clutch housing is sae values , I look forward to watching more of your very clear videos thanks again
Thanks, Steve! I bet it can be tricky getting Detroit parts across the pond.
You do a great job on your videos. Very interesting and well told. You are like most do it yourselves. Laying on your back on concrete or dirt.
from the Netherlands thanks for the video
Nice upgrade.
Nice I have a 555b that has a weird filter like that I wonder if can do the same
Nice
Good videos, thanks. I would have liked to have seen how and where you connected your temp fuel tank. I need to do that.
When I had a clogged fuel strainer, I used a gallon milk jug filled with diesel as a temporary fuel tank. I just unscrewed the fuel line from the fuel tank and stuck it inside the jug. It was sketchy, but I only had to move the machine a short distance 🤷♂️
How do you periodically drain water from the system with those?
What about the oil filter do you have a spin on filter for that or a part #?
I made these conversions to my 190 and the engine no longer starts 😞 I'm curious what the red and white wires are that come from the alternator to the little cap that screws into the fuel filter. I can't imagine what possible purpose those serve.
Is there any letter's before the numbers on these filter base's ? would like to do this to my 353
4:13 anyone knows what is this black round thing that is wired to the alternator and hooked to the fuel filter? My dyno doesnt have one and filter has a cap instead. Tks guys
Hey where's Waldo ?
Dont paint where the fuel lines connect
why not use DAVCO fuel filters? www.davco.com/
You should Cummins swap it to
Nice upgrade.
Thanks! It's so nice being able to use spin-on filters 😂
