The Dickies are one of the coolest LA punk rock bands EVER!!! Yes, there was X and the Weirdos and The Controllers and The Stains, The Germs, but the Dickies were the ones who opened up for the Ramones every year at the Hollywood Palladium. They were my first real punk rock concert. I remember losing one of my Vans tennis shoes at the gig and having to look for it after the concert. It's a total blurr, but I do remember it was so fucking cool! I was only 13 years old and I fucking loved it! The Dickies are AWESOME!
Growing up in Dubai in the 90's, I found a bootleg of live punk songs on this cassette & lo & behold, there was my first exposure to the Dickies through this song! Then in 05/06 working at this club in Modesto, Ca, I got to see their stellar performance of this track. Best moment of my life!!! Lol
The Dickies were very popular in the UK back in the day John Peel loved them ...latterly they progressed away from covers & writing their own material always fast & with good lyrics looking forward to seeing them next month on their UK tour a pure fun band...for those who know Manny Moe & Jack is an absolute classic 😊
Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.........Though, seriously, how’s it working for them!! Also, I believe that there’s been, for a long time, in Melbourne, a band called “Fred Zeppelin” who only do Led Zeppelin covers!! Mistress Bex 💋 ps: It doesn’t really matter my angels, but anyone out there in CZcams land who can clarify the veracity of this - please let me know....See ya!!! Mistress Bex 💋
I think this was the first Dickies song I heard way back then, and I was hooked. They rocked last night in Brooklyn. 40 years of the Dickies and I hope many more! I love Leonard.
One of the great, transcendent moments in punk….the spiritual aspiration is astonishing. The chorus raises the hair on the back of my neck every time. Pure genius.
The original is almost holy to me but this is just great. Genius and some generously sized balls to even attempt a re-make of this classic, much loved song.
I remember when the original was a hit, always loved it, I'm from that generation. I remember when this came out, loved it, too, because it retains the dark, haunting beauty of the original, while replacing the grandeur with manic frenzy. Works for me.
The Dickies did/do lots and lots of covers. You can always tell when it’s just a piss-take or an actual homage/tribute. Not only does this fall into the latter category, but I would say without question that it’s their best cover of all, and one of the greatest covers ever, by any band. This is a bonafide hall o’ famer. It still sounds just as great and fresh today in 2024 as it did way back in 1979.
My first exposure to this cover of Nights In White Satin? I used to work late nights in a country radio station in Texas in the 80's. One night I got really bored and started rooting around in their backroom archives of old 45's. That's when I discovered this gem by the Dickies. In a small town country station in Texas. LOL!
A studio single of this, rescued from the trash at a campus radio station, was my intro to this great band. I like Chuck's fashion sense here and I'll think of it every time I listen to this.
The incredible shrinking Dickies! I remember these guys on yellow vinyl. Nice cover. I never thought to do "Nights in White Satin" as a punk song, but it comes off really well. Thanks for sharing, Mr. Exumedcat.
Absolutely brilliant!!! When this came out I remember reading an interview with the the band and the interviewer said 'Are you not just lampooning the song' to which they replied 'No! We think it's a classic and we want to do it in Dickies style'. It's and homage more than anything. The humour in the band came from their own songs. I love this band.
I'm a huge fan of the original, one of my favourite songs, first time I've heard this one though, I'm impressed, I really like this as well! Very good cover
I think this was the first single I ever bought. As an alternative to The Banana Splits. Virgin Records in Plymouth, UK didn't have that. But they had this. 7" white vinyl. I was 12.
For whatever reason at the time, although I was not a fan of punk, I went and bought this record, still have it, and still play it on occasion, still on white vinyl. many thanks for posting.
Dude that rocked! I've heard a lot of versions of Nights and I do mean a lot. I've listened to over 50 covers. But that brought out the underlying guitar and the musicality of the words as a beat.
A Progressive Rock song is being covered amazingly by a Punk Rock band? Only one word can describe the thing my ears are hearing in this very moment: EPICNESS!!!
Hab die Jungs zweimal live erlebt. Einmal in nem schmalen Laden in Berkeley, Kalifornien. Zufällig. 1992. Dann in Hamburg, Markthalle. 1995. Auch zufällig. Danke. Ziemlich wauw. ❤ Irgendwas verstanden? Eher nicht. So isses halt. Alles purer Zufall. Kein Bewusstsein. Heute nicht. Gestern nicht. Morgen? Gerne. 👍❤💋
Don't know what you guys are thinking, I saw this band a couple years ago at the Waterfront in Norwich. They're still going. I love this song too, although I heard it a few times before the lyrics tipped me off to which song it covered. I think it's the best cover I ever heard!
Nights in white satin Never reaching the end Letters I've written him Never meaning to send Beauty I've always missed With these eyes before Just what the truth is I can't say anymore 'cause I love you yes I love you... Gazing at people Some hand in hand Just what I'm going through They can't understand Some try to tell me Thoughts they cannot defend Just what you want to be You will be in the end
I only saw them once, opening for 999. My friends and I were big fans and had all their colored vinyl records. We all crowded the front of the stage and were hit over the head repeatedly by Leonard with a plastic Bam Bam Rubble club!
you gotta love the old punkers. all original, dressed different from eachother(mostly). not like today, where they are more commercialized and the same. miss the oldies!
I remember hearing The Dickies in the late 70s on KROQ and I loved their sense of humor. Saw them open for The Ramones at the Santa Monica Civic
I was there! Had some random girl jump on my shoulders during "Gigantor"! See you at the No Values festival!
And they're still going strong! Just saw them in Pomona at the No Values fest, and they slayed!
Stan Lee, one of the most underrated guitarists!
Yes!!!!
Sure is
What makes you believe he's underrated?
He is cool as hell too.
This brings back memories of being a teen in the 80s and listening to punk . The Dickies were part of that voyage .

awesome
Indie Sindie did your shoe look like that guitar?
Absolutely & they were slip-ons. I never wore Vans to a Ramones/Dickies gig again. Only Chuck's!
Really fun band to see live.
Ha...i lost a red mary jane when i went to see gwar. I actually found it, but i had to dump a pint of green gwar gunk out of it.

The Moodies used to play a version of the Dickies cover of Nights in their sound checks.
I"d pay a premium to hear that.

one of THE BEST PUNK 7"'s EVER!!!!! sounded soooo great on the radio in Los Angeles...
When they played it on KROQ it was a good time.

+RickTBL I used to think the song was "Knights in White Satin"
Steven Strimling Yes, I imagine a lot of people did.
generous sized balld...yeah
So did the Dickies... read about their banned 7" sleeve for this release :)
chuck wagon you rock

Have this 45 on white vinyl in my old punk collection. Great song, fantastic cover. The original Moody Blues is still a classic.
I too had a white vinyl 45. Now, sadly, lost

Good job , Dude .
Now get out there and vote for Beto O'Rourke , U.S. Senate from Tejas !!
I hope you took it home.
A studio single of this, rescued from the trash at a campus radio station, was my intro to this great band. I like Chuck's fashion sense here and I'll think of it every time I listen to this.
One of my favorite songs by the Dickies.
mines is killer klowns then this
First time I've heard their version of this. Awesome!!!
Great, really! I didn't know this version even existed. Moody Blues fan for 55 years 😅
Really gifted musicians. God bless you and thank you.
The incredible shrinking Dickies! I remember these guys on yellow vinyl. Nice cover. I never thought to do "Nights in White Satin" as a punk song, but it comes off really well. Thanks for sharing, Mr. Exumedcat.

The Dickies were awesome. Thank you SoCal.
I miss this song. IT ROCKS
I think this was the first single I ever bought. As an alternative to The Banana Splits. Virgin Records in Plymouth, UK didn't have that. But they had this. 7" white vinyl. I was 12.

I still have the white vinyl 7 inch record and sleeve with them in white suits, awesome cover version 👌
I want to like this 1000000 times!!!!!
When I win the lottery I'm hiring these guys for my birthday party. Stan Lee is very underrated and all of these loonies are great musicians
No kiidding? Tell us more
Still Loving after 30 years. Wow
You know what? I like that this exists. It's fun, and the lead guitar is great. It's everything that a novelty cover should be.
THAT’s what a cover version should do! Flippin great.
This song was second of a three song set on Video Concert Hall, followed by The A's. Can't remember the first.
Sound of Silence on the "B" side... still got mine, white vinyl if I remember krektly. :)
Great solo
For whatever reason at the time, although I was not a fan of punk, I went and bought this record, still have it, and still play it on occasion, still on white vinyl.
many thanks for posting.
Secondary school 1978-83, spiked hair, DM's and punk knot in tie. Pistols, Clash, Buzzcocks, Skids, Dickies and smoking behind the music room 😉
This is incredible!
This takes me back 38 years ago....
goooood old punk rock :)
Many of fun gigs watching the Dickies!!!!
+Cheetah Chrome Leonard's way of mumbling and singing in that high pitched voice of his is so funny.
Jesus Christ they sound like the Buzzcocks. I love it!
this song is freakin awesome
That drum fill at 0:50! Sounds like a burst from a 600 rounds per minute Uzi sub-machine gun
The only Warped Tour regulars I was ever interested in seeing
I'm 13 and I like this
Allana Davidson YaY! Have Fun!
Your 17 now, do you still listen
Im 58 and I like it
Almost sounds like an Alice Cooper lyric.
I Have an original vinyl record from these guys, Dawn of the Dickies, this song is on it. Love it!
The singers name is Todd Rundgren.
ty for posting! love this band!
I love how the lyrics are so incoherent. This song sounds good when played fast and loud. "Cause I love you!"... "ahhh ahhh ahhh!"
Perfect timing!!!Amazing song/cover/timing+++
Dude that rocked! I've heard a lot of versions of Nights and I do mean a lot. I've listened to over 50 covers. But that brought out the underlying guitar and the musicality of the words as a beat.
Della serie come distruggere i Moody blues ha ha ha grande gruppo meno conosciuto di altri. Un primo punk rock fantastico 💯👊

Totally tongue in cheek, including the outfits, the parody of Pete Townshend, etc. I like it.

The joker costume is great. Love it =)
Wow it is so long ago. Nice Cover. My Favorite is Stukas over Disney Land,
Who ever said Americans didn't get punk?
no one ever...we love you english guys for the pistols, crass the damed, etc....but we had our own versioin....gotta love both.

I dare say the early Stooges work made a major mark in creating the punk sound
american punk is a lot better than the british version. the bands that created punk are all from usa- ramones, mc5, stooges and velvet underground.

Back in the day I tried to tell my dad how much time he would save if he listened to the DICKIES instead of the Moody Blues.
I adore “The Dickies.” Talk about a silk purse 👛 and a sow’s 🐖 ear!!!!. Mistress Bex xx💋
A Progressive Rock song is being covered amazingly by a Punk Rock band?

Best. Video. Ever.

Hab die Jungs zweimal live erlebt.
Einmal in nem schmalen Laden in Berkeley, Kalifornien. Zufällig. 1992.
Dann in Hamburg, Markthalle.
1995. Auch zufällig.
Danke. Ziemlich wauw. ❤
Irgendwas verstanden?
Eher nicht. So isses halt.
Alles purer Zufall. Kein Bewusstsein. Heute nicht. Gestern nicht. Morgen?
Gerne. 👍❤💋
Saw these guys Halloween Night 1994 when they opened for Gwar in Chicago.
Sounds like a great double bill! The first time I saw the Dickies live, they were opening for Shonen Knife's first San Francisco show, back in 1991.
Awesome!
There playing right now in my home town, SLO, 9-10-11
Don't know what you guys are thinking, I saw this band a couple years ago at the Waterfront in Norwich. They're still going.
I love this song too, although I heard it a few times before the lyrics tipped me off to which song it covered. I think it's the best cover I ever heard!
Going to see them this Saturday night!
This is good stuff.
Just love the guitar solo instead of the flute :-D
it's funny to listen to right after hearing the original. Nice guitar solo.
Nights in white satin
Never reaching the end
Letters I've written him
Never meaning to send
Beauty I've always missed
With these eyes before
Just what the truth is
I can't say anymore
'cause I love you yes I love you...
Gazing at people
Some hand in hand
Just what I'm going through
They can't understand
Some try to tell me
Thoughts they cannot defend
Just what you want to be
You will be in the end
The guy who wrote the song, Justin Hayward, told an interviewer that he loves this version of NIWS.
I like the original version, but I LOVE this version! A great example of a radically different cover version that doesn't trash the original.
This shouldnt ever work but as with the magnificent Banana Splits theme, it is just classic.
Love it! I hear they were one of Joey's favorites.
Amazing
great old song
love the dickies i remeber holly and the italians and cindy bullens opening for the ramones for two different shows
I only saw them once, opening for 999. My friends and I were big fans and had all their colored vinyl records. We all crowded the front of the stage and were hit over the head repeatedly by Leonard with a plastic Bam Bam Rubble club!
I totally love you.🥰
THIS is the way it should be played.
This song what got me into The Dickies
Still ROCKING!!
Such a good tune, god damn
