Capt Lovell is still alive, 95 years old. What a legend.
So is his Apollo 8 crew mates. Frank Borman is also 95. Bill Anders is 89.
Just within the past hour, I saw Marilyn Lovell’s obituary in the New York Times.
@@jv-ep2tcAh that's too bad. :( Poor guy, lost his copilot.
@@jv-ep2tc Sad to hear. RIP
Is. He still doing speaking events? My dream is to hear him speak and to meet him.
There’s actors, musicians, athletes, politicians who come on as guests.
Then there is Captain Jim Lovell, commander of Apollo 13! In a class of his own!
He made a joke about looking like Tom Hanks, but i can actually hear hints of Tom Hanks in his voice lol
Kevin Costner actually looks like him
I think he sounds a bit like Norm Macdonald.
Most likely Tom Hanks spoke with him to imitate his voice.
Lovell actually suggested Costner to portray him before Hanks joined the project.
@@ravenaussie3760if you listen without the video, it is exactly like Norm, unreal
I was 9 when Apollo 13 launched. I remember Jim Lovell. He was my mom’s favorite astronaut. I admire him so much. He is now 96 and my mom just turned 98. I remember those tense days after the accident in space and then the splashdown. Wow.
Never mind having Tom Hanks on the show, go to the real man himself to talk about Apollo 13. Way to go Conan!
Getting him was easier than getting Hanks.
@@NHatemNI d rather have Lovell, and I am a huge Hanks fan.
Happy birthday captain Lovell, 96 today.
This aired closer to the Apollo 13 launch date than the present day
Well, that’s depressing
Get out
Real American hero right there
quite Real. Defintely American hero.
Conan was honored to speak with this courageous man. Lovell had to fgure out the rentry trajectory ON PAPER. Physicist, pilot, explorer, astronaut, hero.
I can't imagine being that intelligent
@@angelareese390no kidding. You believe in the moon landing
@@mozymandias1441is that a joke? Or you think you are snarter than evetxone. The thing is secret like "fake moon landing" is not possible to hide
@@mozymandias1441 The Moon landing is a fact - whether you believe it or not does not matter.
@@mozymandias1441Have you been paying attention? Catastrophe struck before they even GOT to the moon!
I have just heard that Jim Lovell’s wife Marilyn has died. My condolences and sympathies go to Captain Lovell and his family. I know that they will have so many people offering their support and comfort at this sad time. Mrs. Lovell’s voyage on this planet is now over but I know she will never be forgotten and she will be remembered very fondly by so many people.
Once again, deepest condolences to Jim Lovell and his family on their bereavement. Having survived the near disaster of Apollo 13, largely in part due to the bravery he showed and that of his crew members, he was able to have and enjoy 53 more years with his wife and family. He and Frank Borman are now the longest living people who have gone into space and their flight on Gemini 7 in 1965 means it is the earliest American mission whose crew members are still alive, nearly 58 years later. I believe the first women in space, Russian Valentina Tereshkova, who flew in 1963, is the earliest person to fly into space still alive.
Craziness. When you put it to "53 more years they bought by bringing that crew home." It puts everything into perspective.
That's the best case scenario, most of the guys lived into their 90's... sucks about Jack though.
Jim Lovell seems very relaxed and at home in this clip, almost belies the skill and courage needed to do what he does...amazing
Being in the public eye is something astronauts train for.
Dude's very charismatic...
Jim Lovell was amazingly poised and entertaining here. And what a story!
All astronauts are heroes whether they’re our guys or cosmonauts or from other nations. Captain Lovell is one of our best great interview by Conan.
He’s not dead
Great man and indeed a legend: 95 years old and still going strong !
This guy is my favorite astronaut.
Got to meet him myself around 2006 or so, back when he co-owned a fine dining restaurant in Lake Forest, Illinois with his son, Jay (his eldest son, the one who was in the naval academy, as seen in the movie), a restaurant that has sadly been closed for almost a decade now; a shame, too, as it had really good food, and their green apple martinis were the best I ever had.
Whenever Jim Lovell himself (called The Captain by the restaurant staff) was in the area, he would stop by the restaurant to greet the patrons. We ended up chatting for a few minutes, and I got to shake his hand and have my picture taken with him. He was the first (and most legendary) astronaut I ever met, and a personal hero of mine.
Even when he wasn't there, the place was a real treat to visit. The restaurant had memorabilia of Jim's Navy and NASA days, especially down in the lower lounge area, where you could have after-dinner drinks and cigars (this being a time when Illinois still allowed smoking indoors, before they banned it in 2008). There were also photographs of some of the characters from the movie on the walls, as well. And the painting that served as the inspiration for the mission insignia hung in the front lobby.
I had heard that Jay had opened up a new restaurant in Highwood, Illinois, but I have not been there yet. And I don't know if Jim himself ever visits, or if any of his memorabilia adorns the place. But if I ever get the chance to go, you will be certain I will do it.
What Jim pulled off is still mind blowing
Mamma said it was the only time our whole little world pulled together, praying as one people, devoid of any differences whatsoever.
Jim Lovell is probably the most Personable of all the Astronauts. At the time of Apollo 13, he had the most Time in Space of all the Astronauts/Cosmonauts
A true hero.
I remember the Apollo 13 mission very well when I was in the Navy. A true act of heroism and resolve. I also grew up during the project Mercury years and had a couple favorite astronauts of the original 7 but Jim Lovell surplanted that a long time ago. A true hero and great guy. Hand salute Capt. Lovell.
This movie changed my life.
They did hype it. They made Jack Swigart look totally incompetent, which was not the case. Mattingly did not help in the rescue and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin did not play nursemaid to Grandma Lovell.
feel better?
But Gene Kranz did wear that white vest.
Incorrect on all points except swigart.
James Lovell one of my Astronaut heroes.
That was a good interview.
How have I not yet seen this film?
Tom Hanks killed this role, but damn does he look a lot like Kevin Costner lmao
Maravilhosa história, filme espetacular, grande capitão Lovell e super parceiros astronautas!!
This would have been right around the time I started watching Conan. I don't remember if I watched this episode.
He looked really old here for 64 years of age.. incredibly hes still alive at today at 95
A true American hero
"You let Forrest Gump take the controls of the plane???!!!"
Fun fact: in the original novel, Forrest Gump almost does become an astronaut, but his rocket crashes into the jungle.
I guess flying a plane is nothing to those guys.
Tom hanks got him spot on
Sad to think that 6 days after this was posted to @CZcams. Marilyn Lovell passed away. His wife of 71 years
Looked more like Kevin Costner than Hanks when he was younger.
The First, Last, and the Next man to fly around the 🌙 all Naval Aviators...
These men had huge brass ones to do what they did.
The old term to describe Test Pilot and Fighter Pilot's personalities is laconic. Look it up kids.
A guy who went to the moon twice and never walked on it, and yet he's so happy and full of life. Compare this to Buzz Aldrin's bitterness about being the second guy to do it.
well, Neil and Buzz landed at the exact same time, so there's that. Buzz was the first to take Communion om the moon though.
Bitter? I think Buzz is only "bitter" when some nutjob tells him he hever went to the moon at all.
Anyone else did the post-Conan death check?
I'm guessing Jordan saw the Russia Lunar-25 Crash news and decided to upload a lunar-landing clip
i think he's a earned a little more respect than "post-interview death check"
@@noizz4 But Apollo 13 didn't land on the moon...
The guy is so for his time. The 90's anyway, at that moment. But I'm sure he is cool as fuck.
Friendly advice. Never travel with Tom!
It's amazing comparing this interview with Johnny Carsons' interview of the crew. Conan is bollocks by comparison. Typical of modern life: quick and shit.
It's crazy to think that this great man who has served this country and accomplished some of the greatest feats in humanity's history is somehow one of the centerpieces of a massive global lie.
It’s sad to think that some ignorant morons still claim that one of the most impressive endeavours in all of human history it’s a lie 😢
