I understand bringing awareness BUT I don’t think a child should be the public spokesperson for an eating disorder. In many videos she is upset and vulnerable. I don’t think that should be filmed for content and to make money off views. She is too young to consent or understand that this very public forum will follow her forever.

as an adult with ARFID i love the awareness and therapy skills that hannah shares, but i agree with many of the commenters that say she is too young to be making these videos at her age. i fully understand wanting to share her experience, but instagram where she shares her content is 13+ for a reason. while i know her mom runs her page, hannah is the face of the account and personally i don't think a child should share such personal content until they're old enough to understand that it will be online forever. as someone also living with the disorder i'd rather see a parent advocating for their child without the kid on camera until they're old enough at least to comply with the terms and conditions of the platform.

Is the ARFID difficulty with food texture to do with "irrational" anxiety (I'm getting the impression that the approach in this video is based on that assumption) or is because of sensory processing differences?

I completely agree. While I think exposure therapy is indeed an effective approach to a lot of anxiety/phobia issues, posting them onto the internet and making an IG account for it seems a little inappropriate. Her daughter is a child, of course she will go along with it and seem fine. But when she grows up, what if she regrets it? Oftentimes, we don't realize the impact our parents decisions have on us until we grow up. Idk, that's just my opinion. Glad to see others agree. I can tell this mom loves her daughter and is an amazing advocate. I just don't think she should publicize it.

An 8-year old child should not be the face of a complex eating disorder. Some of her videos are distressing; she is visibly upset when trying a fear food; her mom is in it to cash in. Hannah is a sweet, thoughtful kid who needs to be protected, not exploited by a wannabe stage mom with dollar signs in her eyes. Why else would she tag food companies in her Instagram and TikTok posts. This is wrong on so many levels; does her mom not realize (or even care) that her daughter's eating videos can end up on the wrong side of the internet? Does she not care she's setting up her daughter for bullying at school? I'm not sure an 8 y/o is in a position to give consent for the most vulnerable part of her life to be made public though social media (her Instagram account has 1.4 million followers and counting).

I hope though that she continues to work on getting better with the help and support of professionals and that they investigate a bit more. Because you never know if this can turn into something worse or if it can develop into munchausen by proxy etc.

Im 22 with ARFID and emetophobia to boot 😭 it gets so bad to the point of panic attacks and nausea over the fear of choking or getting food poisoning. It really popped out within the last 2-3 years to the point of needing lexapro to address my anxiety. I lost 13 pounds in the span of 3-4 weeks and was skin and bones for a while. It was knowing I needed to eat in order to begin to feel better again, paired with the fear of it harming me. It would take me a two hours to eat a slice of pizza, and by then my hunger was back at full force over the small portion size + the hours it took to eat in the first place. Eating was a chore. The stress of working through the fear to avoid having to be hospitalized and given a feeding tube in order to gain the weight back was awful. I couldn't eat normal sized portions for months, and it took around 6 months to gain & maintain my weight. I still suffer from time to time and have bouts of mini panics while eating or swallowing food, but its getting better and I finally enjoy foods again. I cant imagine being so young and suffering from it 😔 when you're in that state of mind everything is daunting, even just two bites and nothing sounds appetizing anymore.

As someone who has been in eating disorder recovery for a decade-- this is so important. There are 7 different types of eating disorders. I've met MANY people in treatment both inpatient and outpatient and IOP that have had this. Anorexia and BED are the only well known eating disorders but there are many and often have overlapping and can morph from one eating disorder to another. ARFID is especially common among the neurodivergent population and differs from anorexia in that it is UNINTENTIONAL restriction. the barriers to food usually more sensory related or trauma related as well. It doesn't usually have the body image distress component as well but is still as serious and debilitating and has the same PHYSICAL repercussions because restriction is restriction whether it is unintentional or not. Disordered eating is disordered whether it's intentional or not.

As someone who has struggled with a diagnosed coconut, treenut and peanut allergy all their life. I carry multiple epi pens around kind of allergy..., I have had this type of "eating disorder" on and off my entire life. There have been times that I have avoided food all together because my severity of my allergy has fluctuated. Now (I'm 38) now that I'm a mom and my allergy has worsened, and after the disruption in food production caused contamination and label changes on once "safe foods" and that our food is much more over processed and comes in contact with one of these three ingredients, I cannot eat over 80% of food in a typical grocery store. When I was a kid, I grew up on boxed meals and such, but had extrememly bad digestive and stomach issues and would vomit. I was confused as a teenager because I wanted to eat, but always threw up. I could of been a better athlete if I ate wholesome allergy free foods, but my mom was a single parent of 3.
As an adult, I have a list of safe foods and it does give me extremely bad anxiety to try something out. I always feel I have some sort of reaction and must feel what my body goes through every time I take a new bite of something. It's lame and scary to have this anxiety. Forget eating at social gatherings or eating and kids birthday parties. It's horrible.

Every time I brought it up to a doctor, I was told that “she will eat when she’s hungry.” It was a lonely road for us, but one day I saw a video of a little girl eating a piece of chicken and gagging. I recall being upset as the video was Intended to be funny and the parents being praised for forcing her to eat that. I checked out the comments, and one of the comments stood out. It was a woman speaking of ARFID. It was late at night and I was in bed, but I got up as I looked up ARFID online, and it was an incredible moment. I knew my child had it too. It wasn’t until two years later that I finally found a pediatrician to validate me. We now have the official diagnosis. The disorder is not rare, what’s rare is the medical world not being educated on it.

It’s almost uncomfortable to watch her; I really don’t think her vulnerable reactions should be filmed, for her own good. Anyway, I hope this girl is doing OK!

I'm almost 20 and have been struggling with this disorder since I was an adolescent. Hannah raising awareness and fighting to recover and have a better quality of life is amazing and I am so proud of her. However, Mom really needs to take a step back and look at the platform that she's created. It only takes a glance at the comments on her social media pages to see that the reception to Hannah's videos is overwhelmingly negative. She's going through enough as it is and does not deserve to be subjected to such cruelty. Even if she agrees to posting the videos, she's too young to fully consent to that sort of thing -- she isn't old enough to understand. Exposing her at her most vulnerable for millions to ridicule and tease her is horrible parenting.

    • @ramblyk1
      @ramblyk1 Před měsícem

Is the ARFID difficulty with food texture to do with "irrational" anxiety (I'm getting the impression that the approach in this video is based on that assumption) or is because of sensory processing differences?
I thought it was the latter and that it was usually associated with autism. But maybe I've only heard of it in that context. If that's the case, I worry that having to try one different new food every day and not allowing for days off (if she's already too overwhelmed) could be too much.

I'm a little surprised and disappointed to see this featured by GMA. I don't feel like she, like any other minor, is able to actually consent to being featured on the internet. Many of the videos seem forced. Perhaps what she needs is a private network of other children and adults and not for her struggles with ED to be featured on social media. The amount of predators, mean people and people seeking content with the actual intent to fuel their own ED is unreal. I'm very disheartened by this kind of content that features children. And that also is saying very little about the strange impression I have of the mother. It's just not right. Have we already forgotten the Ruby Frankie situation - or Gypsy Rose? Remember, we can't see what actually happens behind closed doors once these influences turn the camera off.
Please feature less content like this.
    Edit: grammer

I agree. I can't believe people are still okay with children being exploited online, especially knowing where these videos end up. Yer, there are lots of food I can’t eat so freely or carelessly. It will tigger me to vomit. Fish, vegetables, other are very difficult to eat. I can’t eat in restaurants most of time due to different texture, temperature, taste, etc. So mostly of time I cook myself since I know myself better and figure out how changing something I can’t stand to something I can tolerate, which is that I accidentally become chef. I still can’t figure out how I can eat fish because of that thousand of tiny boxes that filled of sand texture. And for example that I found way to eat that I can’t before, veggies. I can’t stand their hardness texture, brittleness taste, something that triggers me very offensively. I had to cook them long enough to be very soft and allow time to absorb tasteful by seasoning or sauce. Just I still can’t eat veggies in sizable amounts. And I can’t eat any leftovers so I cook small amounts to avoid waste food. And I can’t let someone, even if it is family cook food for me. Just take one difference make me reject that food. How I can force myself when it will tigger vomit. And other time, I just lose interest to eat something and not eat for two to four days. And I am so careful with smoothies’ texture. Raspberry and blackberry are not allowed in it unless seed have removed or crushed to powder form. Peanut butter, chocolate, and Banana is so easy to make, it make my favorite breakfast meal. And I had to carefully with banana’s ripeness as well. I can’t eat it if it has tiny parts of green. It must be at least 50% brown for me to eat it as it is soft and sweet. Any banana has at least 0.01% of green must in smoothies or more wait time. Over 80% brown bananas will be in baked goods as muffin or bread. So that why I lose interest to eat something as it is darned so hard work to make something I can eat it. Some people may ask me why not take high prossred foods as fried chicken or junk food to keep simple. Well, I find it that too much oil or fat tastes so gross or disgusting and difficult to chew it. Just only whole dairy is acceptable as it is reasonable amounts.

I have a similar thing - I go off food, very easily, due to textures. Most people could bite into an apple, and if it had a bruise in it, go 'yuck' and maybe spit that out, or possibly through the apple out. Me - i don't eat apples for years. At its worse I'm left eating toast. Seeing a osycholig8st and a dietician helped. Being able to have variety of foods means I have more choice, which means I am less likely to get stuck eating just toast again.
