Squid - Narrator (Official Video) ft. Martha Skye Murphy

- Taken from the album Bright Green Field, out 7th May: brightgreenfield.squidband.uk/
We're excited to announce our debut album Bright Green Field, out 7th May on WARP! This is the debut album we’ve always wanted to make and without a doubt the most ambitious thing we’ve ever done. We can’t wait for you to hear the whole thing. And especially to be able to play it to you in person…….
‘Narrator’ features the fantastic Martha Skye Murphy on vocals. The music video is directed by Felix Geen.
The track was inspired by the 2019 film A Long Day's Journey Into Night, the song follows a man who is losing the distinction between memory, dream and reality and how you can often mould your memories of people to fit a narrative that benefits your ego. Martha Skye Murphy, the track's guest vocalist, made the point that the unreliable narrator is, more often than not, a male who wishes to portray women as submissive characters in their story. After some discussions with Martha she thought it’d be a good idea that she play the part of the woman wanting to break free from the dominating story the male has set.

If the album is anything like this first tune, you just know it's going to be a real belter! I also love the fact that they haven't put any of their existing singles on their debut album. A brave, exciting move. These lads are always interesting.
I'll just link the live performances of three tracks off the upcoming album here :

I know I’m gonna sound pretentious but I don’t think many media outlets really recognized how important this album is gonna be. They’re digging up the past and pushing music forward.
Best and most observant comment. An incredibly important album.
Yeah. It's like if you put Talking Heads, Radiohead, Television, Gang of Four, Brian Eno, and Dinosaur Jr. in a blender.
The sounds certainly break the mold but influential albums are usually more consistent. I love BGF but there are some dull moments on the back half, I think if Squid can avoid those looser more indulgent songs that they could absolutely write an instant classic.

So I had listened to this album once. I liked it. The second time I put it on was waiting on an airplane to take off. As we were taxiing for takeoff this song came on. As we left the ground the end of the song came on and Martha started screaming. The sound of her squeals and the turbulence made me instantly terrified, like we were going to crash. I gripped my arm rests tight and assured myself everything was fine. The song ended and I thought to myself, "holy shit." I'll never forget that once in a lifetime experience.
It's like a duet between Talking Heads and a pencil sharpener. Two thumbs up from this rust belt gal.
posted before I heard the end. Holee shit. 4 thumbs

For real, after playing it so many times... I absolutely love the groove with the clean spicy guitar riffs. But what it does for me is totally that fugazi part which he says repeatedly "i play mine" until it explodes exactly where it should go. The screaming at the end is fantastic, refreshing, really amazing. The bass at the end just keeps on giving, fantastic stuff, for real.
LIstening to the album for the first time today I was absolutely gobsmacked. For this to be a debut album from any band anywhere, it's just insane. No debut album has given me such a fundamental shake for years. This band are going to be enormous.
Getting serious Radiohead vibes from the "I'll play my" part, looove it
Agree👍
hail to the thief type beat
Even if the band likes Radiohead that's not remotely a compliment. If I was in a band and someone said 'oi, mate, that sounds like Wedding Present', I'd think 'fuck it then, I may as well quit'
@@duncefunce1513 I'm not trying to say it sounds derivative in any way. I think they incorporate influences like Radiohead for example into their sound which is a cohesive mix of many influences.
@@jonflowers5022 this is fair, reasonable, balanced, and moderate
Cannot wait for being at a gig and the crowd just screaming I play mine over and over again.
Holy shit. Just found you guys. I am a huge XTC and Talking Heads fan. Your music hits the spot.
this band should get more attention wtf this is some high quality stuff
That Brighton ozone does its work once more. Fantastic group channeling all the good stuff from Gang of Four and Talking Heads to Pop Group to sheer flat-out insanity peppers at the end...wonderful stuff and strangely cheering as I prepare to brave the morning rush-hour Paris metro...
Literally the sequel of Ducter's video. And also the song itself.

Lyrics:
I'm trying real hard, I think I made it up
Flushing out your face with the features from a magazine
One slow sequence just to find my feet
Ten toes, I've got five on each
Losing my flow and my memories are so unnatural
I am my own narrator
Losing my flow and my memories are so unnatural
I am my own narrator
Footsteps erased
I'll play my part
Path doesn't change
Mold beauty out of clay
I'll play my part
Right words for me to say
The mirror guides us, affectionate
I'll play mine
A story of thieves' resurrection
I'll play mine
I'll play my part
I'm trying real hard, I think I made it up
Fleshing out your face with the features from a magazine
One slow sequence just to find my feet
One slow sequence, well that's all I need
Losing my flow and my memories are so unnatural
I am my own narrator
Losing my flow and my memories are so unnatural
I am my own narrator
Mold beauty out of clay
Write words for me to say
The mud is deep
It floored me
One person gained
Let me plead
Let me know
I'll play my part
I'll play my part
I'll play my part
I'll play my part
Crystalline, so serene
I'll play, I'll play
Let me see
I can know of dying laces
Finishing parts
I'll play my part
I'll play my part
And then I'll play my part

For the majority of this video I assumed that the singer wasn’t singing and then I noticed that it was the drummer!? Fucking sick.

Brilliant song. Love the intensity. Love the screams. Love the grooves.
This is a perfect song. Such a groove at the beginning. Middle section gets very atmospheric and builds tension. And the cathartic end is just feral shrieking and chaos. 10/10 exciting music. Can't wait to hear more of what these folks do.

Waiting patiently for the album, you've got a new fan dudes
The last part of this song, with the visuals and the manic screaming and faces crumbling apart, is the very embodiment of how COVID19 lockdown is making me feel. Maybe the whole "narrator" concept is of a lonely person going through their house and garden either talking to themselves, or having a mad internal dialogue, during the pandemic. Not sure... I guess we may all have our ideas about what inspired this brilliant yet insane piece of music.
