MANY, MANY THANKS!! This chicken feeder FINALLY solved my ground squirrel problems! The little SOB were eating half the chicken feed but no more. I put in four feed ports and raised it up with a smooth sided bucket like in the initial video shot, to prevent ground squirrels from climbing up. Some can still stand up on their hind legs and stretch enough to get their front claws on the lip of the feed port. But since it's smooth and there's nothing to grab, they end up falling when they try to raise themselves up. I watched one try three times before giving up. No need to worry about rats and mice at night either so I can leave it out overnight. The handle makes it easy to move anywhere but I did bend it flatter so it can't swing past the lid. I didn't want it hanging on the side which might help the squirrels trying to hoist themselves up. We don't have tree squirrels so I don't know how well it will work with them. But it is 100% effective on California ground squirrels which are a real plague in my rural area. Just an FYI: I bought my food grade 5-gallon bucket and lid from the paint department at Walmart. This white bucket has no markings and the labels are easily removed after heating lightly with a hair dryer.
We will be building this and the feeder and waterer for our first chickens in this house! We can only have 6, but if another 2 or 3 sneak in, I'm not telling anyone! We plan to share the meat and the eggs. Thank You Jesus for directing me to Lumnah Acres and for the go ahead to finally get some chickens! Thank you Al, for sharing your hard work and knowledge with all of us! You are a Godsend!
Sweet feeder!!! Just a tip that I've seen before, if you use the whole 90 coupling for each hole and you keep the bottom of the 90 an inch or two off the bottom of the bucket and you won't have to tape that little cut off piece in and worry about it coming off.
Your videos are just what I needed to build my first chicken coop. I hesitated on building a fancy bigger coop because it cost so much and I was not sure I would continue raising chickens for eggs. Thank you. I cannot wait till tomorrow to get m supplies.

Cheap and simple, can't beat that. Take the water and feed out of the tractor, move the tractor and refill the buckets, put them back in the tractor and your done. KISS!
years ago I made my own bulk feeder using a kitchen trash can, I can put an entire 50# bag of lay mash and was totally amazed at how much feed I saved by making this feeder, they were wasting more feed than they ate. I made a video of my work, but it was after I made it, one of my first videos, and its way to long just showing you the finished product. This series has been very nice to watch maybe you could add a hanging nest box design that could be used for a small family laying flock. That would make the complete circuit for most people

What I've done differently is to put a length of pvc tubing from the top of my feeders that extends just through the side of my coop. That way i can put more feed and water in the coop without having to hop into it. Thanks again man.

Al, I have to stop watching all these videos and get out and build my own! lol I have been waiting to see the final product and do all my materials and tools gathering at one time....one complete list, one trip, all prepared, start to finish project, done. That looked like a 'long sweep 90 deg.' elbow you used, a short(er) pattern 90 deg. will not give you the same shape for your 'feed chute'. I suggest to your subscribers (2) 3" 45 deg. street elbows. The fitting you use maybe hard to find, I'm speaking strictly from a plumbers eye. I really like the total design. This feed bucket looks like it may keep the feed drier from rain etc. Thanks for the video and God Bless
The 90 elbow I used was the normal one that lowes stocked. They had a long sweep which I didn't use. Cant wait to hear how you like you $30 chicken coop and the DIY Automatic Chicken feeder!

I made this over the weekend for our chickens. Really appreciate the video and directions on your blog. BTW - parts list is for a 90 degree PVC elbow, however the link to Amzn goes to a 45 degree elbow. Have you found the 45 or 90 elbow to work better? So far the new feeders are much cleaner than the old commercial style feeders with so much less waste. I have a chicken house on the farm so I raised the new feeders on cinder blocks and seem to work just fine.
I made one of these and any chickens small enough absolutely will get trapped inside the feeder. It worked but I have found it to be better to feed my poultry daily instead of allowing them to free feed. the number one reason that I prefer to feed daily is pest control. I live in rural Mississippi where food is left out you can bet the rats are going to get it or the mice. the number to reason I don't free feed is cost. they absolutely will eat their fill every single day and then some. I have found it more cost-effective and better for the health of my birds to give them what they need and not what they want
Coffee! That's what the OGOK needs, an off-grid coffee pot. You shouldn't have to fire up the woodstove for it either. How the heck are you supposed to do that before you've had your coffee?
Your posts are normally a good time - winter hit earlier than expected so I'm outside right now from 6 AM to 8 PM winterizing everything. If I know a live feed is coming, I arrange my schedule to be inside - canning, bread making, etc. Today I'm canning pumpkins and tomatoes so I have internet. I receive a signal maybe 30% of the time outside. I'd keep the time the same (12 PM here) because when I'm dealing with snow - I'll probably be back inside that time to warm back up! :D

I prefer a different style that only uses pvc pipes but this one is definitely more resistant to rain water.

Built 2 of the coops going to make 3 water and 3 feeders. I only have 12 hens, 6 ducks and 4 turkeys. Planning on get meat chickens in March

You could also use pipe glue and glue on an end cap after you cut a hole in it or get a pipe and then cap you can screw together avoiding all glue

Would it better to have the ski on the end with the buckets? The way it is you have to lift both buckets to move the tractor.
