How to Reboot Smash Bros.

  • Two years have passed now since Super Smash Bros. Ultimate finished its DLC, enough time that fans have started seriously talking about what Nintendo might do for the next title. Opinions are split over exactly what Smash 6 (or whatever its name ends up being) should do to follow up Ultimate. A conventional sequel? A re-release for Nintendo's next system with some new content tacked on?
But one idea is, perhaps, the most interesting: Reboot it! A full refresh of Smash Bros. could allow the next game to create its own identity, free to build alongside Ultimate instead of being expected to surpass it in every way! Not only would it be much more doable for the developers, it'd let the game focus on aspects Smash has de-emphasized for a while: More modes and single-player content, more features returning from past games that have gone missing, and more veterans given full reworks that they've desperately needed!
Let's see just how a Smash reboot could work, how it could legitimately benefit the next game, and what a rebooted roster of (roughly) 50 fighters, with a careful balance of veterans and newcomers from different series and eras, could look like!

If there's one thing I'd like to see in the next Smash? Character interaction.
We have all these characters from all these different fictional worlds and they never say anything to each other, never acknowledge each other except as 'opponents that must be defeated'. It would be a lot of work to handle well but could give a reboot a lot more identity.
Multiverses already proved with its in-battle banter that this can work, all that game needed was to let players tweak the frequency of the banter.

Multiversus is one thing, but outside of RPGs Nintendo is pretty shy with voices. Sure Ike talking to Sonic would be cool but, imagine Link and Cloud, or Jigglypuff and Samus. Riveting. Silent animation interactions like in Brawl is the only way this could really be pulled off.

And we'd lose so many interesting characters that make matchups and gameplay more fun, that's like throwing away a child's entire toy collection and giving them less toys but with more functions, who cares if Mario is faithful now if we had to axe so many completed characters for it
You don't need a reboot to continue Smash after Ultimate, there's still plenty of franchises that haven't seen their modern updates (like Kirby or Sonic) and a reboot is just gonna throw all the already available hd assets to the bin if it's gonna have a new engine or whatever, I'd rather have the next game salvage as much as possible given so much stuff like the stages or everything surrounding it is already completed for hd use

    • @poptart9162

@@kirbyofthestarsfan yeah but that was also literally the idea of Ultimate’s project plan - salvage and compile everything from smash history into the ultimate culmination of everything that’s come before. If the smash series is ever going to truly evolve, I think a scaling back is definitely needed. Plus, for as great as ultimate was, certain things felt very missing. It’s always exciting seeing a full new stage list, all the trophies, and the plethora of side modes available. Ultimate was lacking that stuff, and yeah it was cool to see characters and stages return after so long, let that be Ultimate’s thing - the final chapter of the first book of Smash Bros. This next game should be the beginning of the next volume, scaling the roster size back (giving some long needed overhauls to some existing characters), and focusing on a full comprehensive experience that could function as a new start for the series to build off of going forward

Give them more run speed, (but not like Bowser at least faster than Villager but prefer on par with Zelda), change dash animation to the mage dash in the FE Warriors series, I prefer the Three Hopes one, change his stance to his idle one from Awakening. I don't like the Smash one, makes them look like a joke character. It looks way too clustered and clumsy for someone who is seen as a powerful front lines fighter and tactician in-universe and in some instances like Warriors and the mobile game, they have telekinesis. I'd either let the Bronze Sword and a Tome float close by Robin and let them smoothly and quickly float to their hand whenever an attack is called or let them (and in tumble, they stay on different sides accordingly depending on animation until fall where they hit the ground and stay until Robin is conscious again), let them warp to the user, or just have them hidden in their big sleeves (with Robin's Jab 1 and how forceful they raise his arms in tilt animation, let the Bronze Sword quickly slip out as a reference that he can learn assassin techniques too) as it justifies the motion. Whichever is easier to animate. Just get the weapons out of his hands. I'd keep the durability system and reduce Tome (bar Nosferatu) and Levin Sword limit (only if it connects but can't use Levin Nair anymore) and make the Tomes and Levin take a few seconds longer to come back and lets Robin on swordplay too as canonically their skill lets them keep up with Chrom and Lucina in battle, all just to balance out the mobility buff and continue to experiment with them as time goes if need for more buffs or nerfs. Also, I change the UI from that bar meter to a small fraction so it's harder for foes to look at your art to see what you have.

This is probably the most generously realistic and “respectful” approach to the smash reboot of seen. So many videos and posts I’ve seen and read before this all unfortunately reek of “I’m a Nintendo purist that hates jrpg’s, and pokemon doesn’t count as one.” As a big fan of franchises like Xenoblade and FE, this is incredibly frustrating because (especially in Xenoblade’s case) these are franchises that are really making a name for themselves and deserve to be recognized so that more people can experience them. I appreciate your take on it because it’s realistic with its cuts, giving respectful size to Mario and pokemon for good reason (despite my personal grievances with the latter, I agree with that conclusion), and allowing for newcomers for most if not all major franchises. Your take on dlc inclusions is also something I agree with a lot, allowing for less dev time and less licensing stress as well as allowing for previous veterans to return with little to no hassle

It's hard for me to find the right words to say about this video essay, and a Smash reboot as a whole. There are plenty of ideas tossed around, and I think you presented a healthy mixture of ideas, even if I didn't agree with all of them. Everyone has their 'Dream Version' of what any Smash game could look like, roster or otherwise. But I think we can all agree on one thing: Smash is a celebration of gaming that can be enjoyed by anyone, whether they know a character and their franchise or not.

Deciding who and what is going to be in the next Smash is not easy, but it is interesting. I have been more willing towards a Smash reboot as of late, and have thrown a few ideas around myself.
More notable Single Player content is one major point, and I think one way to do that would be to revamp Classic Mode a bit. In addition to Ultimate's character specific classic routes, you could add in a traditional, more random style of classic mode like Melee and Brawl, as well as constantly changing routes with specific conditions released over the internet. Speaking of internet, have a classic route maker! Let you create a challenging or unique route of your own, send it to the web, and take on other player's classic routes. You could even do the same with Event Matches! I also had an idea for All-Star, which would become mixed with Crazy Orders, allowing you to chose who you face each round, and letting you tap out early to face the final boss, which would probably be a mirror match.
In terms of new characters, one frontrunner you didn't mention was Dante, since I feel like he'd probably be the K. Rool of this game, the character who was hyped to get in last game, but couldn't quite make the cut. Most of your First-Party newcomer picks seem likely, save for the two time-sensitive ones. I do feel most reboot rosters hang around the 50-60 character range, which I do worry might be a bit of a highball, since Ultimate had a bit more then that in it's starting roster (not counting Echoes), which was mostly returners.

If the game is going to be a reboot with significant changes (and not just “you can air grab now”), there’s no way we’re getting 50 to start with. Quite frankly, if Ultimate is seen as “too much” to continue from, 50 is too high to start. You add 10 fighters through DLC, then the next adds 5 to the base game so 65, with another 10 as DLC, 75. So in 2 games you’re already back to the same problem.
There’s only two ways of fixing this, it has to be real low like 35 but they’re all reworked substantially, so you can go several games without rebooting again. Or, you pull a typical fighting game move… you keep a certain base amount, and just rotate fighters in/out each game. Say there’s 25 that always remain, with up to 60 (including DLC) as the max, but those 35 other fighters can be dropped and brought back during any game. It’s the only way to make sure your roster doesn’t balloon to impossible proportions.

The other mode I'd love to see back is of course Smash Run. Give us 2 or 3 different maps for variation and allow all players to play in the same map instead of being separated. If you KO another player it gives you a chance to steal some of their stat boosts!

A few thoughts on the roster though. I feel like Lucina will likely be retained over Robin just because she's always the icon of Awakening. She could be made less of a clone by having her take over as the "Roy" of the swordies, being much more like Chrom is now. I also feel like Waluigi bloats the Mario roster a bit. That might sound silly given it's Mario, but you did slash Pokemon, the biggest franchise on the planet, down to 5 and Zelda down to 4. As much as I appreciate more love for chad Rex, I don't think it's practical to expect him to be added at this point. The actual blade system would be a pretty complex thing to make work, especially trying to keep things like blade/driver combos as well. From a development perspective, there's also huge motivation to recycle things like Pyra and Mythra's models and moveset to simplify creation unless there's huge motivation to scrap them for Rex. I also think other than some rebalancing, Pyra and Mythra are very elegantly designed as a base roster character. Not tons of complex gimmicks, just a straightforward fighter that really makes the most of the simple swap mechanic.

It's exhausting for us and the devs and it doesn't solve any problems of the game itself (clones, no interesting side-modes, stale veteran movesets)

Keep in mind that the next console basically has to be backwards compatible with the switch (as in it would be really bad for both Nintendo and the consumers if it wasn't) so ultimate would still be playable on the new system and unlike the Wii where you had to have a bunch of specific cables and stuff to access gamecube mode, I would assume this new system would work more like 3ds where you just put in a switch cartridge to access a switch game so there's less of a reason to rerelease it. I'm just putting the information out there and am not trying to imply this means they'll go a certain direction over the other.

I know it’s a bit late to comment on this, but your roster for this hypothetical next Smash is no kidding, exactly what I’d think would happen.
Only thing I’d add to this proposal is that every character from Smash 64 to Brawl that would return should have almost a complete move overhaul. Granted, some moves would survive for this next game, but with some exceptions like say Captain Falcon, a bunch of characters should be changed up.
Only exceptions I’d say would most likely be characters from Smash 4 & Ultimate as they’re more recent.

You know what I think would be cool? Multiple movesets for different characters. That way you could have various movesets to represent specific games better. For example a super mario sunshine moveset or a luigis mansion moveset could be really cool. It could even play into the idea of custom movesets by allowing you to make your own moveset from different special moves from different movesets belonging to one character.

One thing I know for sure about a Smash reboot is that it MUST appeal to casual players, thing that it always did and not a single plstform fighter (or smash clone) has done nor gotten right, giving people things we know they know rather than keeping the things we remember and are no longer relevant.
If a reboot cannot make new players happy and hook them with casual fights + single player content so they can on their own learn about the competitive potential then it wont be a good Smash.
Still, the game should manage to give players a way to learn about older and unkown games, it always respected the past and made sure people knew about it.

I know I’m a bit late for this but hearing the cuts you made for the fe characters sparked an idea. Alear certainly can have new reps from various emblems, but they can also just make all the cut fe reps be used in their specials. Ike’s Aether for up b. Roy’s “Blazing Lion” as its now called in engage for a ranged slash attack. Corrin’s Dragon Fang for a projectile. And Lucina can use either the bow Parthia for another projectile or one of her engage skills bonded shield as a counter. That way you’ve effectively turned 4 semi-controversial fe characters into 1, while also introducing new mechanics and attacks to still make Alear feel different from the remaining reps

Only thing I think was off was the exclusion of Jigglypuff (I know seems silly). I’d argue Jigglypuff falls into the list of characters, together with Ness and Captain Falcon, that transcend their original game and are more canonically smash characters at this point.
Besides that minor gripe it’s a great list of suggestions.
On a personal note I’d also love to see a graphical change maybe some stylized cel shading, making sure that all four special move for characters are useful as part of their kit, make an RPG inspired adventure mode and last (but definitely not least) make the online experience GOOD for once.

Personally, the craziest idea I had for them to do the next smash bros is a game with a heavy focus on the Adventure Mode.
All the characters would be split up in pairs of two (maybe some a little more) for a unique story that takes them through all the other universes to defeat their villain. The stories themselves would probably be excuse plots, nothing special, but fanservice-y enough to leave you satisfied. every pair of characters would play through the same stages, but they'd be visited in different order with different enemies, and each has their own gimmicks, so no two adventures are the same.
My even crazier idea on top of that is a significantly smaller roster than even you got, maybe around Melee size, but each character would have a few different versions to include some Mario-style powerup action. I'm thinking that each character has a weaker alt version, and a stronger alt version. Maybe several stronger versions for specific characters. You'd be able to make some crazy gameplay changes to the regular battle modes with these too, like having your first stock be the weak form, leading up to the strong form on the last stock.
Really, even ignoring my crazy ideas, what I want from the next Smash game is something *COMPLETELY* different than what they have been doing.

The best way would making some kind of Arcsystem/SF V/6 style of story mode
Each character would have their own short story in classic mode with a visual novel style narrative to justify the gameplay part.
If there is a main story, the only way to have a big roster and a story closer to Brawl would be again, a visual novel style of narrative with an ocasional CG/anime cutscene. But i doubt this would happen with Smash because:
I don't think the younger Smash audience would enjoy this type of story mode. The classic one is likely, but a full story being told mostly in text would piss off the general audiences or they would find it boring.

i think smash as a series has gone as far as it can go as a multiplayer game, so if we wanted a reboot to exist alongside ultimate like you said near the start of the video, I think a single player focused game would be what I'd do. Smash is a crossover but it doesn't really take advantage of that fact, we don't get character interactions except for niche cases of characters being in the same series. I also think, if there was to be a fully story mode, Smash characters have so many unique tools to take advantage of, so having levels built around certain characters would be very cool.

Wasn't actually expecting this, but more variety is always a blessing! Yeah, as awesome as it was to have all the Smash veterans back again since Deluxe, unfortunately, you cannot ride this boat forever, and, as painful as it is to say, all good things must EVENTUALLY come to an end, and I think a Smash reboot could greatly benefit that! There's been so many features missing since the original Smash so hopefully we'll get to see many of those return like Break The Targets, Board The Platforms, and Race To The Finish albeit giving each fighter their own distinct stage design (and also FINALLY having RTTF be available in the menu selection, and not via hacking), Bonuses with fun names, Event Battles, though this time ALL playable fighters their own match, and not giving Mario several (maybe even for DLC characters too if possible), Custom Specials that are more balanced, unlocked at the very beginning, only 1 new Custom this time, instead of 2, and would be from the source materials, Adventure maybe in the style of Deluxe's again (Emissary Of Subspace style again would be cool too if possible), Field Smash, All-Star back again perhaps, Crazy Hand solo fights in Classic for once that's not with Master Hand, Boss Battles, and so many more! Maybe some more returning stages that were left out in Special! As well as missing music tracks! Probably even bring back Figures at long last, alongside maybe Spirits as I've always considered them to be like the better version of X's Stickers, and so many more! Hell, there could be even more new ways to fight like maybe Back Tilts, Back Smashes, Dash Smashes, Neutral Smashes, Back Specials, and Dash Specials! I think if handled JUST right, they could spice up the formula even more! Now, here's MY personal version of how a Smash reboot roster could potentially look like (fair warning: it's gonna be crazy (hand), so prepare yourself): Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus Aran, Yoshi, Kirby, Pikachu (Male & Female), Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser, Princess Zelda, Marth, Ganondorf, Mewtwo, Mr. Game & Watch, Meta Knight, Zero Suit Samus Aran, Wario, Ike, Pokemon Trainers [Zenigame, Fushigisou, and Lizardon], Diddy Kong, Great King Dedede, Pikmin & Captain Olimar (maybe Alph, or maybe the silent Pikmin 4 avatar instead this time), Lucario, Villagers, Rosetta & Chiko, Gekkouga, Mii Fighters (Brawler, Fencer, and Gunner), Reflet, Shulk, Bowser Jr. (maybe Koopalings), Kamui, Inklings, Princess Daisy, Ridley, Dark Samus Aran, King K.Rool, Shizue, Byleth Eisner, and Homura/Hikari! I know I cut out EVERY third-party fighter, but that's so it'd be MUCH easier for the developers to focus on the first-party characters, though they could return via DLC, same with any cut characters I didn't mention. Overall, I'm more open for a reboot than a sequel! Another solid video, Delzethin! 👏

I feel like one thing I would add is a gimmick to make this reboot feel fresh and stand out. And bringing back the Custom Special Moves feature from smash 4/Mii fighters and expanding apon it could be the way to go. Especially if the roster gets smaller, 'cause then they could focus more on changing up the movesets and give players a chance to unlock and customize these moves to find their ideal play style for their favorite characters.

How about making the next Smash Bros. a live service game? We've seen Nintendo have a track record with Splatoon and Animal Crossing. Not only would doing this spread the games longevity & hype cycle over several years compared to one or two via DLC cycles, but it would allow the team to invest as much time & resources as they would need to retool the vets and make newcomers raise the bar of moveset potential. It just has to be done right.

Pretty cool video I must say. I will definitely admit that the idea of a Smash reboot has been one that I’m not super fond of but I do think that if done right, it could be pretty cool and this video shows me that potential. The potential returning modes that could be breed with new life on top of new modes that could help new time players and give this reboot its own identity sound especially worth it.
Personally though, in terms of that roster, I feel like for the sake of a Smash reboot, the only characters I'd say would need major overhauls are most of the pre-Brawl characters with a few exceptions like Sonic. I think a roster that has more than Smash 4's final roster (which came out to 58 characters) but less than Ultimate’s base roster (which came out to 74 characters) would probably be the most ideal lineup so as to not feel like too much of a downgrade from previous titles while also making sure that the cost for developing other aspects of the game is balanced more fairly with tthe roster size. I picture a roster of 60 characters (not including echoes) with 50 returning veterans (Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox, Pikachu, Luigi, Ness, Captain Falcon, Peach, Bowser, Ice Climbers, Zelda, Falco, Marth, Ganondorf, Mewtwo, Mr. Game and Watch, Meta Knight, Pit, Wario, Diddy Kong, Charizard, King Dedede, Olimar, Lucario, R.O.B., Villager, Little Mac, Robin, Shulk, Duck Hunt, Inkling, Ridley, King K Rool, Isabelle, Byleth, Pyra/Mythra, Snake, Sonic, Mega Man, Pac-Man, Ryu, Cloud, Bayonetta, Simon, Banjo-Kazooie, and Kazuya) and 10 newcomers (Waluigi, Impa, Bandana Dee, Noah, Meowscarada*, Sylux, Alear*, Isaac, Rayman, and Ryu Hayabusa). Echoes I could see happening, though I'd say for the sake of a reboot, no 3rd party echoes, and possibly, the echoes put in both new and old (Daisy, Dark Pit, Dark Samus, Dixie Kong, Octolings) are tweaked just a bit more to help them differentiate them from their original versions. Will say though, coming up with this roster was sure hard to come up with. Trying to figure out who gets cut and what newcomers was sure an headscratcher. Most notably, it's very common for Smash games to at least have new franchises added to the roster but that's so hard to tell given the uncertainty of what'll be relevant that's still around right now or what new IPs could be put instead.
Overall though, this was a fun topic and video. Last thing to mention is that should this be the future of Smash, I just really hope we can all come together and appreciate what's given to us instead of what isn't given to us.

I really hope they start fresh next game and don't try to build upon ultimate with a sequel or a port. Not for the reason of "There's nothing else they can do." But it would just be WAAAAAY too much to manage.

You know? What if Shadow basically takes old Sonic and balances him/turn redone Sonic into a zoner trickster? Since Shadow is a spy and notorious for using fireweapons and energy beams he would make more sense as a camper, but we could make him more zoner or trickster for more balance, playing with Shadow's mental strenght, and making him an oposite to Sonics's rushdown gameplay while not being an absolute annoyance.

I agree that a reboot might be the best route Nintendo could take, particularly with how they can properly update movesets or retool the undercooked ones.
Give Samus her newer weapons from Fusion and Dread, give Kirby his missing staples and some more popular abilities, give Link more from BotW and/or TotK (Though your idea to have Impa or Rauru in could work around that by giving them the Sheikah and Zonai powers respectively.)

If I could only make two changes to your new hypothetical roster, they would be..
    1. I would swap out Yoshi for another Mario newcomer, Toad. Yoshi throughout Smash outside of having a unique double jump, has been the fighter who has always been just kind of there without much fan fare. And while you can update Yoshi with more element from his own games, not only are giving representation to a character/race who have made appearances (in both playable and NPC appearances) across the Mario series. We also get to represent a new set of Mario games like the puzzle games (like their roles in Captain Toad Treasure Trackers, Wario's Woods, and maybe even a nod to Mario & Wario) ontop of finally rounding out the full SMB2 cast which also is another good source of inspiration for Toad's moveset.
    2. I would switch out the Excitebike for Mach Rider from NES game...Mach Rider. He fits the bill of both being retro Nintendo rep and having the same as unique identity of "guy who fights entirely on his motorcycle" while having more to work with as actual fighter. Such using their pistol, being able to place down explosive barrels around the stage, or porting similar ideas from an Excitebiker move set like spawing ramps or mud puddles; and the very least having an Excitebiker skin as an alt. Also they were one of the rumored newcomers for Ultimate in the Grinch Leak so their inclusion wouldn''t be too out of left field.

This was a very fun video indeed great work I wouldn't mind a reboot at times it is very necessary and with how ultimate is right now not sure if it would be easy to bring back everything for another installment I wonder if Capcom was thinking that when they made infinite.

My thought was always adding dimension. An arena battler with more emphasis on platforming and stage variety.
Smash as an IP will always be compared to its past. Better to make the comparison apples to oranges and pivot the genre.
It would not be easy, but with such an overhaul, we could go back to smaller rosters in a completely reasonable way since every character would be fundamentally redeveloped.

Then it wouldn’t really be Smash anymore. It’d be like making mainline Street Fighter into a 3D fighter, or Splatoon into a bullet hell game.

@@Neoxon619 or it could be like mario 64, an iconic new take on an iconic series.
The obvious difference would be that they kept making 2d mario games alongside the newer 3d ones, but with Smash, I genuinely feel like Ultimate finished the series. Any reboot that doesn't change the substance of the game itself might just feel like a lackluster sequel. Any sequel with increasingly more content just risks bloating the game into oblivion. I'd rather start with smaller content with a bigger scope of playability

@@paulweyer4339Street Fighter never had this absurd expectation placed upon it of having to change the core of the game, despite running longer and having more entries than Smash. There’s virtually no good platform fighters, yet there’s tons of 2D fighters and even some 3D ones. Why do _none_ of them have to change (when at least there’s always a “backup” option to play), but Smash does? There’s nothing about having ~80 fighters means it’s “done” and has nowhere to progress. It’s the assumption that the only thing that could set it apart is just more new characters. They could do plenty of new things.
I think a reboot is inevitable to help cut the roster while also revamping old characters, but that doesn’t mean it has to change genres/perspectives. All you have to do is once you hit 50-60 characters (including DLC), have about 20-25 that are mainstays, and the others could be cut or brought back at will with any following game. Like how a lot of other fighting games manage their growing rosters already. Everyone from the dev team/Sakurai to the fans just have to get more used to cuts happening. And not just the 5-6 per game that happened with Smash before.
