  • Happy new year! 🎉 Today I finally review the Nissan Frontier, perhaps my most talked about truck apart from my own. And I'm happy to report it's pretty good.

I bought a brand new 2012 Nissan Frontier SV pick up truck and after putting a 159000 miles on it with no problems someone T boned me, it flipped over and rolled several times and I ended up with a broken leg and loss of the truck. The doc said the truck saved my life. If I was a car I would have died. I highly recommend the Frontier for safety reasons.

Trucks were originally designed and used for work. Tech gadgets don't help you tow and/or haul more heavy loads. That's just creature comfort stuff. The interior of this pickup is easy to clean, repair, and/or replace in comparison to luxurious interiors of new trucks these days. I wish that for the 2018-20 Fronty models, Nissan would've used a different color for the dashboard lights. Orange is very 90s. Lol

Couple issues with this review. The Front end does NOT date back to O5. There was a significant redesign around 2011. Not huge but it did help allot with the looks IMO. Also, the tow/capacity figures are correct for other models but not the pro-4X. It may be misleading for some to be looking at those numbers under this truck. Because of the offload suspension the max bed capacity is about 1100 lbs and towing is around 6200 lbs. Main difference here is bed capacity. Its significantly less. On the premium package it offers leather but more importantly power seats on both driver/passenger which is significant. Even the Ranger lariat does not have power recline. Just up/down and forward reverse. Tacoma only has power seat in driver seat with higher trims (not passenger). Also something worth noting is the 10 speaker system in Frontier probably is the best in class. 380 watt Rockford fosgate with sub has an amazing tune. Plus the premium package also gets you a sunroof. Both GM and Ford do NOT offer that. Plus spray bed liner is standard. Even a 45K dollar Ranger does not offer that. There is allot of value here. Almost forgot this has 4 wheel disc brakes. The best selling Tacoma still has rear drums for some odd reason. This truck is much faster off the line then the tacoma. It has more power then any generation tacoma. Pretty sad being the motor was designed back in 2004.

Just got my 2017 Pro-4x about a month and a half ago and I love it, I’m 6’3 so it’s almost to small for someone of my height but it’s a good fit. Other than the gas mileage (but it’s a truck so that’s expected) it’s a solid truck. Good for what you need in a truck without all the added stuff that can just be more money on repairs down the road like in other trucks now a days. If you’re on the fence about buying one, I would highly recommend getting it.

The thing I like about Frontier owners is that they don't pretend or act like they have a world-beating pickup truck. The Frontier is an old-style, nitty-gritty, no BS, bulletproof workhorse that doesn't really rise above the pack in any distinct area but it gets the job done, and that's what their owners love about it. Tacoma owners, by contrast, act like their vehicles are God's gift to the world of pickup trucks when the reality is that the Tacoma is sub-par to average in just about every category compared to the majority its competition. The difference between Frontier and Tacoma owners is that Frontier owners know that their trucks are simply 'good enough', while Tacoma owners think they're superior to everybody else. I respect Frontier owners because they're realists, they know that you don't need all the bells and whistles to get the job done or get you from A-B.

To see comments saying this truck is unreliable is completely laughable. Within my house and friends we have seven Frontiers/X-Terras that have logged endless miles. Businesses are ran, families are hauled and trailers are towed and the only real problem any of us have ever had was the heat went out on one of the trucks and was fixed under warranty. We use these trucks for everything and myself and my wife tow often in the Northeast and Adirondack mountains. My wife tows a camper with hers and I tow a boat which all together is 23’ feet in length. Our Frontiers aren’t babied and we do take them off road.
They are outdated by today standards but they are known for the reliability and the 4.0L is very strong and we have never had any type of transmission problem.

Tows a loaded 6X12 cargo trailer for work and carries a Honda XR400 dirt bike or a couple of perception kayaks in the bed for play. It's been all over the country and it Loves Wyoming like me😁. I have put 2 radiators in it because they both developed a leak after 100,000 miles each. Other then that the usual maintenance like oil changes, brakes, and wearable suspension parts like ball joints and shocks, as well as front wheel bearings and CV axles. Did finally have to replace the rear catalytic converters at 300,000 and went ahead and threw all new plugs and coils on the truck so It will hopefully go another 300K🤞

Yes! I'm startled the others didn't, as I touched upon in my Canyon review. Head unit replacement is kinda up to the installer. You’re under estimating its towing ability. There are plenty of sizable boats within in its rated capacity and it does a good job. I’ve had 3 frontiers and have towed fairly heavy with all of them.
Besides that you are on point about that truck. It’s 4.0 also feels much better than the Tacoma and it makes torque where a truck is supposed to make torque. Low on the rev range.
The frontier makes 90% of its peak torque by 2000 rpm. The peak comes at 4000 rpm.
Tacoma needs a screaming 4800 rpm for peak torque.

What annoys me about this is that there is an electric version of this pickup for sale in China, with a little bit of work this could have easily been brought to the United States as an option and Nissan would have beat Tesla Ford and rivian to the market with the nation's first electric pickup. And this might have given them a Fighting Chance in the electric segment given that Nissan batteries suck when compared to the other companies.

A Nissan electric truck would make as much sense as a Tesla tow rating of 5000 lbs on the model x. A truck is a work vehicle, not a status symbol, it’s been proven with the model x that if you try to tow a trailer the batteries deplete so fast you might not make it to the next charging station, which unlike gas stations are on every corner. If you want a status symbol buy a blonde wig, it’ll do you the same good as an electric truck.

    • @mrspeigle1
      @mrspeigle1 Před 3 lety

@@robertpulliam9973 the overwhelming majority of trucks don't tow anything, especially in the half ton and compact pickup truck segments. Even when they are Towing it's usually a utility trailer to haul a lawn mower across town to the repair shop, not an RV across the country. The electric Frontier would have been fine for the standard commuter utility vehicle for a Suburban property owner that occasionally has to pick up a load of boards at the local Menards. As for the model X yeah towing capacity drops to 1/3 of maximum range same as it does with gasoline-powered vehicles. Not really a big deal given that it's an SUV design for hauling passengers and not a dedicated tow vehicle, the hundred miles and change it gets while under toe is perfectly fine for hauling a bass boat down to the local Lake for a weekend of fishing which is about the most I would expect from that size of SUV. The Cyber truck is going to be pushing closer to 500 miles of range and will likely have a better energy usage profile due to its dedicated Highway Motor so it would be reasonable to expect 165 to 200 miles of range undertow. Again perfectly fine for a half ton pickup. seriously if you're going to be Towing a lot you need a 3/4 or 1 ton pickup with a diesel engine, and if you are truly dedicated to Towing such as hauling an RV for doing light transport work you'll have an auxiliary fuel tank installed in the bed. I have absolute confidence that in 10 years or so we will have a 3/4 or 1 ton version of the Cyber truck with adequate battery capacity to function as a dedicated Towing vehicle for professionals but that's going to be a generation or so away after Tesla's infrastructure has expanded in the next generation of batteries have hit the production lines. Also new charging stations are going up all the time and with the continuing expansion of electric vehicles it's only a matter of time before those Corner Gas Stations start installing level 3 charging alongside motels and roadside diners.

I’m talking about the real world where trucks are used for working not status symbols. Honda is all ready covering that area with the ridgeline . By the way tow is spelled with a “w” not like you spell with an “e”.

@@robertpulliam9973 dear mr pulskinja, 1 im using voice to text. Kiss my ass grammar nazi.
2 you missed my point regarding the difference between a compact, half ton and 3/4 to 1 ton pickups. The guys who are using pickups for towing are buying 3/4 and 1 ton diesel pickups. Not half ton or compact pickups like the frontier. The market for compacts has ample room for an electric pickup and Nissan dropped the ball by not bringing the electric frontier to the united states.
3 infrastructure. Every 110 outlet is a charger. A lvl 2 charger is any garage that can handle a 240 line. A matter of a couple hundred bucks for any electrician. Public ev charging stations are adding 8 to 10k new stations per year and the rate is accelerating
You also seem to think only rednecks in the middle of nowhere buy trucks. This is frankly myopic, anyone who owns basic property can make use of a pickup.

That truck is so small and low that you just don't need a driver side grab handle. Eliminating it saves Nissan a buck or two per truck. Or a buck or two for every hundred trucks. 😆

After 2000 Nissan merge with Renault, and the quality of Nissan is no longer as good as it was. I and millions more have stop buying Nissans, they are just garbage. I gave my 1999 Altima to a close friend with 150k and he have now 360k, I don't share your excitement, after all I purchase in the early 90's four Nissan frontiers and never had and issue. Before posting you shoulda done your home work, Nissan sales have drop a lot. Renault is a garbage car maker just like fiat. Stop posting all news.

Except this design pre dates Renault. Bullet proof Nissan design with the VQ40 5 speed auto or with the MT 6 speed. These are as reliable as ever. Even more so then the Tacoma at this point. Tacama took a drop in reliability with the newer 3.5 and active learning 6 speed which is a piece of garbage. Plus these are still made in the US in Mississippi. Fully boxed frame all steel body. These are pretty much tanks. NO CVT here which is the main issues with the newer cars.

Renault did not take over Nissan. They helped bail Nissan out of debt in 2000 by buying 44% of their shares. Nissan and Renault are separate entities still to this day. Carlos ghosn is who to blame for making some quality cuts and even then they still make quality cars and know how to build a proper truck to this day.
