Thanks for not hating on the Frontier. So many of the other reviewers I’ve seen all parrot the same old complaints... it’s old, it lacks technology, etc etc. You are right - those are exactly the reasons why the truck still appeals to a certain, but dwindling number of truck buyers. Those looking for a simple, honest to goodness capable small truck that doesn’t cost two arms and a leg have to strongly consider the Frontier. I just bought a 2019 Frontier crew cab 4x4 and I think it’s great!
Yep, the less tech the better for me. This is still one of the most affordable 4x4 trucks. Who wants to hit a rough trail in a $50,000 glorified station wagon? A used Frontier can be had very reasonable and you won't cry when you get custom pinstripes from the brush on a narrow trail.
The 370z in 6mt is still desirable its one of the last analog modern sports cars on sale. Natural aspirated v6 with a manual and hydraulic power steering for sub 20k. People who are in this market don't care about the latest in driver assistance or tech upgrades..
Seriously. It’s like your still living in the 2000’s just thrown on some led ambient lightning strips, led headlight bulbs, and you have a really cool truck.

Fishing is my drug. Dont worry if they do there will be plenty of awesome used ones to buy. My 2008 4x4 SE crew cab long bed has 275,000 mile on it and think it might just go another 100,000 before it's done. Whenever the good old truck decides its given me enough awesome reliability and performance I'll have to buy another one. I am kinda excited to see what the new frontier will be like though. I'd Love I mean Love a little diesel in the new Frontier. What ever happened to their Cummins partnership?

I have a 2012 Xterra PRO 4X. Best vehicle I ever owned! No issues, off road capble and it does the job and yes, there is no advanced technology inside which I like the best

Big displacement engines give natural low end torque. This is a healthier truck when it comes to being a work truck. Now the ford 2.3 turbo is better for daily driving, but if constantly under load will burn out. Honestly all nissan needs to do to the frontier to keep it competitive is give it optional saftey tech, their newer infotainment, a 4 way adjusting steering wheel, at least 1 household outlet (although a second in the bed would be amazing) and a better back seat in the crew cab model. The 7 speed and a front camera wouldn't hurt. They really don't need to redesign this from the ground up, just give it a heavy refresh.

That "crap" is some very helpful safety tech and better mileage. People shell out big bucks for it so of course they're gonna keep producing it. I agree though that there's still a market for a basic small truck.
@@earnedmystripes2382 theres a good chunk of useless crap. Like theres no need to have an electronic style of changing from 2 to 4 wheel drive. Or no volt meters or everything is linked to the computer. You can't fix the vehicle to get home without a tow if the computer decides it wants to glitch.

It’s refreshing to see a simple work truck in 2019. New trucks are getting so complicated. Even a tailgate got so much tech like in the newest Dodge and Fords, all those folding mechanisms, power lift gate crap etc are unnecessary for a work truck. You’d be worried about throwing stuff back there as you might break something in the new trucks. Only tech you need is a back up camera and reverse sensors in the rear. And power windows. This little truck delivered on that. Love it! Only improvement needed is with the headlight bulbs, those halogens do the work but a little dim at night.
Lol yea. My 2003 x5 4.4L. Gets 2 full mpg better. Lmao But, we got a great deal on it and hasnt had any problems. Except for the dynapro tires.... Worst. Tires. Ever.

Look at used too.. My cpo 17 Pro4x was a steal. Picked it up a little over a year ago and it's great for what I need in a truck. Check out Nisstec for suspension/brake needs.
In my opinion this truck is for people who have nostalgic ties for trucks from the 90s. This indeed is an amazing option for a person that doesn’t want crazy high tech gadgets in their vehicles. Considering the price, this truck is really worth it.
For maintenance reasons, this would be a no-brainer to buy - all of the engineering quirks have been discovered and you have literally decades of knowledge built up about this vehicle. The aftermarket has reached full maturity as well. Depends on what you value more in a car, comfort or longevity
Well ideally yes ....except its not a particularly reliable truck . Sadly. U will be disappointed! Shop Colorado, Ranger & Tacoma an step into 2019. Esp Ranger! Most tech. Built super solid an strong ala F150. Plus a powertrain that's just incredible. Dont take my word tho. Test drive it! I did an happily own one now. #Ecoboost
@@andybub45 It is if you're looking for a basic truck. The Gladiator is considered a toy and doesn't come stripped out to meet a lower price point. You have to pay to play. But, compared to, say, higher end versions, it's actually priced quite competitively. A Gladiator Rubicon is actually about the same price as a Tacoma TRD Pro or a Colorado ZR2, and many would argue the Jeep is the most fun.

They are a great truck and best engine/trans. Bullet proof. None of that active learning/unreliable transmission garbage here. VQ 40 has great power and will run forever. However, the turning radius is horrible. They do take a big circle to turn around. Doesn't take a city block but almost lol.
frontiers and tacomas are great lasting trucks. i own a 99 frontier single cab that i only use for work daily has 144k miles and that thing runs so smooth. bought it two years ago super cheap and only thing i have replaced is power steering pump and done a tune up. love my little pick up.
Answer,YES. Buy this truck if you need a truck. We will miss is simplicity and durability when it's no longer for sale. The upcoming newer model will have the tech, but the charm will be missed from this older model. I'm in the market for a truck and this is the top of my list even over the Tacoma and Colorado because it's built stronger and has proven itself to be the most durable without any modern tech issues all newer models have. NISMO Frontiers are really great as well.
These are such nice trucks if you like simple interiors. Flashback to the late 2000's when the infotainment screen wasn't the number one selling feature of a truck. My dad has a 2019 Frontier and absolutely loves it-- she gets the job done
I just sold my 2009 that had 175,000 miles on it. it was simple to maintain..I .went through 4 batteries,4 sets of tires,a fan clutch and a few alignments.
A very honest review!!!!!! After driving all the competition, I bought a 2019 for my daily driver. The reasons? It drove like a truck should, not a car. It didn't have a bunch of unwanted tech. VQ motor was plenty strong and I saved alot of money. It's a great buy!!!!
Very surprise u made a review on this truck, which i love. Also u reviewed a basic plane vehicle, different for u something I've been waiting on. Not everybody can buy a top of the line vehicle. Think u should start showing more vehicles that have other options other than top tier all the time. U have your fan base so we will watch. Good video tho !
In today's market this is the truck to get. Simple, reliable and everything maintenance and repair related is well documented. This is the choice I'd make if I needed a simple practical work truck or even a daily driver. All of that DFI, turbo, automatic this and automatic that are ruining vehicles and sure you get a bit more MPGs but down the road you're faced with expensive repairs or you're forced to buy an extended warranty because you're scared about potential repairs.
I just bought one of these lightly used and it's a great truck with not great gas milage. Way more affordable then the Toyota with a better crash rating than the Tocoma and no nonsense drive train over the small American trucks. Torqy engine that has good real world performance. No direct injection here to foul up valves. When I drive it i feel like I'm getting a technology break from my other car a 2017 Dodge Challenger. The Pro-4x runs well in tough conditions. Breaks could be better. Turning radius is not great but manageable. Other than that I'm a fan of the truck it's really straightforward. I mean what do you want it's a bulletproof cheap truck that performs. Looks great in the Pro-4x trim. The radio, although screen is small it actually works well and navigation works better than my wife's new Acura. iPhone syncs flawlessly. Radio sounds good with the included sub-woofer on the Pro-4x trim and rims are attractive. Nice ground clearance on the Pro-4x!

@@Proatcod10 motors are fine, its the faulty radiators that cracked and mixed trans and coolant. Anything after 2010 with the updated rads are pretty much guaranteed 300k without issue.
I still have my 07 pathfinder, 175K miles on her and the only major maintenance was a gasket ring for the trans fluid. she still runs like the day we got her new 12 yrs ago.
@@NbenGames had to get rid of mine in 2006....the frame totally rusted out, it was ready to split...sad, the rest of the truck was fine, it was running great ....had about 130,000 on it.....sold to the junk yard...i miss that truck....replaced it at that time with a new 2006 hummer h3, 5 sp manual( i just want manuals...lol......ha, not to many choices left...)..still have that now...great truck !!....thats getting old, i just picked up a 2019 jeep rubicon ( 6sp manual...lol)...so far, awesome truck also..!!....but that pathfinder was special !!!
Hey this truck may be old, but honestly, you don't have a lot of cars like this that are this simple and easy to use. Some people will appreciate that. Not too offensive, no crazy tech, no BS, just a simple interior that you can use in minutes.
Sometimes simplicity is the best. And Nissan definitely gives you that with this Frontier. A truck you can put through hell and back with confidence and not have to worry about all those electronics going wrong - the last of its kind. My nephew and my brother-in-law each have a late model Frontier - they absolutely love these trucks! And very reliable, too. I'd get the Midnight Edition Frontier......it's actually really cool.
How does it feel when towing? A couple of weeks ago I towed a 6x10 U-Haul trailer loaded with furniture from north Alabama to Houston, TX.... I was pleasantly surprised. Plenty of power, adequate braking, very nice handling, and no issues with transmission or engine. Flawless operation made our trip better than I thought it would be. The Frontier is not a sissy truck. If Honda had such a truck I'd buy it, but the Ridgeline is more like a modern El Camino. My SV V6 4wd crew cab isn't fancy--- it's archaic, but comfortable, and it just gives me a good, sturdy, and small enough truck that fits in my garage.
Yeah, I'd say these things are tougher than most new trucks out there. No overcompensation, no electronic nannies. No fancy BS. Just an honest truck that can take a beating.
@@Shakerhood69 So true the new ranger is So disappointing aesthetically. I was excited for the ranger to come back as my first truck was a 1988 4x4 ranger super cab and it was a great truck! And I might be in the market for a new truck in a couple years when my current 2008 4x4 Frontier crew with 275,000 miles on it hits 350,000😉. But I woulnt be buying that ugly ranger. Who am I kidding I'll most likely be buying another used Frontier unless the new Frontier comes out with a diesel.

Yup, still good looking because it still looks and feels like a truck. The other auto makers really make cars with a truck bed. Example, just call the Tacoma a Camry with a bed with its wimpy no torque 3.5L engine and sit on the floor car feel.

Needs adaptive cruise control and you've got a winner. The 4x4 system in these is a legit monster. A real truck with 4x Low and locking rear diff can't be beat!

I've test-driven the current and previous generation Tacoma V6 a few times in the past 6 years. I must say, this 'old' Frontier with its robust VQ40DE V6 feels like a sports car compared to (heavier) Tacoma with its' sloppy and cumbersome handling, dizzying ride quality, thin cheaply-padded seats and noticeably lethargic-feeling V6 engines. I can forgive the Frontier's old school feel, especially when it puts a smile on my face passing all those Sloyotas! These test-drives were enlightening, as the Tacoma absolutely dominates the roads and mall parking lots where I live. You cannot turn your head and not see a Tacoma. I've often complained of why Nissan USA has been so slow to bring the current Nissan Navara to the US to compete with the current Tacoma. The Navara has a solid platform that Mercedes-Benz even uses to underpin its' truck in Europe, Australia and elsewhere. But then I hear friends complain about their Tacoma transmission problems and unrepairable cracked composite beds (yikes!). And I see so many 'sunburnt' Tacomas with peeling exterior paint everywhere on the road. Then I view online images of recalled 'hunchback' Tacomas with rusted buckled frames being replaced at Toyota dealerships. Note to Toyota: Using cheap quality steel and paint from the get-go in at least 2 generations of Tacomas has its price. Lastly, a few years ago, I was surprised to see the Frontier had displaced the Tacoma for top reliability ranking, according to Consumer Reports annual predicted reliability data. Even the Chevy Colorado ranked higher than the Tacoma! The Frontier has repeated this top ranking several times since then... After all this, I finally thought to myself, "Maybe there was virtue in deciding to keep the trusty Frontier around for so long?" It has become a tried-and-true warrior with proven long-term durability (if/when maintained properly)....Not only still a handsome choice, but an enduring solid value to many new and used truck buyers in the market!
If Nissan made a Frontier with a more modern and fuel efficient engine and transmission, updated the interior and added all the latest safety equipment and technology, all with the same body style, I would buy one immediately
They run if you maintain them. But such is the case with almost any vehicle. Nissan dealership is notoriously evil though. If you never have to take it to the dealership, you'll be safer. Once they touch it, it's over; new problems will arise every other month.
Have had my 2019 since August of 19 and I love it so much. Fantastic daily, fun in the mountains after upgrading the shocks, skids and slides, and comfy.
got me a used 19 desert runner with 35k miles on it earlier this year. Loving it. Yes it's slow but I don't really care. I still get people checking it out. It's a charming little truck and has pretty much gotten me to love Nissan as a brand. Here's to trading it in for a newer Frontier whenever that time comes.
The most underrated Truck, but still one of the best. Only old schoolers that understand what a truck was intended for will appreciate it. Nissan still gets it!
Its probably the last truck on the market that you can modify for off-road without requiring a recalibration of modern safety assists systems. If you add a levelling kit to a modern midsize or full size pickup, the radar adaptive cruise and emergency braking system will no longer be aimed properly. Combine this with oversized tires and the braking algorithm will probably be out of spec because the tires will reduce brake effectiveness. I also suspect that modern stability control could be affected. These are issues that aren't often considered and should be considered when you're planning to buy a new vehicle. It almost forces you to buy the dedicated off-road model that suits your needs and they are now ridiculous in price. Just look at the price of the Tacoma Pro, Colorado ZR2, Gladiator Rubicon, and you'll see what I mean. You could easily modify a Frontier Pro 4 to approach the capabilities of these vehicles for a lot less money.
I had a 2009 Frontier 4x4 SE V6. Love that truck. Put 167K miles on before I sold it. The only complaint I had was the horrible turning radius, otherwise is was an affordable and capable sport truck.
I live in Colorado and have a 2010 Pro-4X. Other than the turning radius, it is a great off road truck. It's more sure footed than the GMC Canyon 4x4 I drive for work . It has PLENTY of horsepower at 10,000 feet. I've used the off road features like the locking rear differential and downhill assist on a combo of muddy / icy mountain dirt roads / trails and have had no problems. Followed several trucks up a mtn road in light snow and had to keep slowing down for the ones in front because they were not handling the conditions as well as my Frontier, and I had Cooper AT3's not mud and snow tires on the truck. Don't sell this truck short on off road capabilities simply because it has old tech. It has been great in tough conditions. Mine has 135,000 miles and ,other than replacing the radiator as a precautionary move when I bought it because of a known possible problem with 2012 and earlier radiators, all I've done is standard maintenance. (oil, transmission fluid, brakes, filters, tires). runs great as hasn't lost a step in the power or gas mileage. BTW, regarding the basic model you drove. I'm in South Africa. I have one. 12 years old with a little over 187 000 miles on it. Love these trucks, it's been reliable and runs well. I've pulled some heavy loads and find it very stable. I'm not in a hurry to change it for anything else.
the fact is though the stereo while outdated is basic double din. easy to put a far better radio in with android auto and apple carplay. i see no reason to complain lol
Good point. With the price discounts on the frontier, paying few hundred bucks for new stereo is worth it. The truck is simple reliable and small. That exactly what the ford ranger customers wanted but didn't get.
I bought a 2019 Frontier after crashing a 1997 Nissan pickup I had for 23 years. I was disappointed to not have a manual shift, manual locks, crank windows, manual mirrors, etc. 23 years and everything still worked perfect.
No blind spot monitoring - turn your head and check your blind spots. No cross traffic alert - twist at your hips and look behind you or look behind you using your rear view mirror. These methods never fail unless the driver fails to apply them and they cost nothing and never break.
Its mindboggling why in north America Nissan still selling this old model while the rest of the world have the all new model for quite sometime now. Anyone can explain why???
Maybe because people in the US like old tech. GM and Chrysler still sell lots of cars with pushrod engines - something most other manufacturers abandoned in the 80’s.
My guess is that because the current frontier that is sold in the United States is also manufactured here which allows Nissan to avoid that pesky import tax on light trucks that are not made here(commonly referred to as the chicken tax) and in order to bring the current generation to the United States they would have to retool the factory to build it here or they wouldn’t be able to price it competitively if they built it overseas and added the tax on top.
If you compare cars from late 2016+ to even cars as far back as 2006-2012, you’d see almost all new cars are luxury cars. Technology is becoming cheaper and standard while safety equipment is mandated. The only real way car companies denote status is by locking leather seat interiors behind expensive multi thousand dollar trim levels as opposed to cloth seats; and with fancy plastic badges glued on to the exterior.
Great review of an awesome truck. My Dad had a 2003 Frontier CC Long Bed. Great truck that lasted over 300K miles. Wish List for new one: 1) MUST improve the turning circle/radius! He used to say it was dangerously bad at times. 2) Somewhat larger interior of CC as it felt smaller than a compact car. 3) 48" (standard pallet size) between wheel wells 4) Payload of 1,500 Lbs + not including Driver.
I bought a 2006 Nismo Frontier new back in 2006. I had 100k trouble free miles when I sold it 7 years later. It had excellent low end torque and was a billy goat off road. I did a lot of highway driving and was very comfortable. I truly feel it was a better build quality then my 3rd gen Tacoma.
I bought a Frontier Pro 4X new in 2017, and I really like my truck. Simple, well-built, and rock solid - all the things I want in a truck without the gizmos to break down. And it looks great!
These trucks will outlast pretty much anything simple v6 and 5 speed auto ,these engines are long lasting with proper maintenance, there is a reason why Nissan didn’t touch these for as long as they did, similar to Toyota’s 4Runner 4.0 Powertrain and tundras 5.7 Powertrain same for years and years

I actually use my 06 Xterra as a tow vehicle, dog hauler, beach comber & daily driver. I thoroughly enjoy the truck & TOTALLY glad it has the hard durable plastic. Have not damaged it yet. The fold down front seat is a RARE plus when hauling long items & the hard plastic rear cargo area is AWESOME. make a mess, who cares. Whip & go can't damaged it. Only thing I wish is it had rubber floors like my buddies FJ Cruiser.
I got to live with driving a 2019 2WD V6 model for two weeks earlier this year. Except for the gas mileage, I had little to no complaints. There's nothing wrong with a dated truck; it's less complicated than newer trucks.
There is a huge benefit of it being 10+ years old is that they have had enough time to fix all its problems so basically the needed one shouldn’t have many problems
This is what all manufactures should do. Make the truck long enough to fix their weakspots. Tried and true like nissan. They stick to one platform because they know it works. Unlike all these manufactures who change design, engines and powertrain every 5 years and never perfect their stuff. 👍good job nissan! At the end of the day thats what a truck should be reliable and tried and true

@Nissan370Z there's this weird assumption out there that updating a car ruins its reliability. why can't they leave the reliable engine and update the rest of the vehicle? also you can't really be clamoring for an engine that puts out those type of hp numbers, at ~12 mpg??
just bought a 2019 SV king cab. because..... because, the 2008 that i bought in 2007 that i drove for 12 years, putting 341,000 miles on it. and the only trouble was the strawberry milkshake at 140,000 miles (transmission) once that got fixed i drove it for another 210,000 miles. was so good that i got the new one. keep your fancy schmancy trucks. this thing works!
It’s interesting how without a refresh, it’s still very utilitarian and reliable while being faster than the Toyota Tacoma and some other American trucks. Glad a manual transmission truck option is still available. But it’s very weird to see Nissan’s cars slowly falling behind Hyundai and Kia. Hope they can turn it around soon.
This truck is truly ideal because it does not have all those fancy new electronics that add cost to vehicles these days. It is s simple and nice truck.
I own a '15 cc with a 4.0 v6 and 5 spd auto bought it w 46k and a 3 year aftermarket mechanical warranty for 21k and im really happy with it. I consistantly get 18 mpg and i am happy with it, wish I had a bigger gas tank though. Only get 300 gal per tank but I'll live. Has bluetooth and it is a comfortable interior. It tows everything I hook up to pretty easily and like he said it feels fast with all that torque. I love my truck not to big but big enough

I've owned 2. 1st had 300000 miles when I sold it. They are bulletproof.
Dated Nissan 370Z for weekend, Dated Nissan Frontier for daily.
Buy both used and get two current cars for less than half price.

Fishing is my drug. Dont worry if they do there will be plenty of awesome used ones to buy. My 2008 4x4 SE crew cab long bed has 275,000 mile on it and think it might just go another 100,000 before it's done. Whenever the good old truck decides its given me enough awesome reliability and performance I'll have to buy another one. I am kinda excited to see what the new frontier will be like though. I'd Love I mean Love a little diesel in the new Frontier. What ever happened to their Cummins partnership?

I have a 2012 Xterra PRO 4X. Best vehicle I ever owned! No issues, off road capble and it does the job and yes, there is no advanced technology inside which I like the best

Big displacement engines give natural low end torque. This is a healthier truck when it comes to being a work truck. Now the ford 2.3 turbo is better for daily driving, but if constantly under load will burn out. Honestly all nissan needs to do to the frontier to keep it competitive is give it optional saftey tech, their newer infotainment, a 4 way adjusting steering wheel, at least 1 household outlet (although a second in the bed would be amazing) and a better back seat in the crew cab model. The 7 speed and a front camera wouldn't hurt. They really don't need to redesign this from the ground up, just give it a heavy refresh.
Well said! But it does need a new engine to improve its poor fuel economy. Turbo 4 like in the Ford Ranger would work well.

It’s refreshing to see a simple work truck in 2019. New trucks are getting so complicated. Even a tailgate got so much tech like in the newest Dodge and Fords, all those folding mechanisms, power lift gate crap etc are unnecessary for a work truck. You’d be worried about throwing stuff back there as you might break something in the new trucks. Only tech you need is a back up camera and reverse sensors in the rear. And power windows. This little truck delivered on that. Love it! Only improvement needed is with the headlight bulbs, those halogens do the work but a little dim at night.

For maintenance reasons, this would be a no-brainer to buy - all of the engineering quirks have been discovered and you have literally decades of knowledge built up about this vehicle. The aftermarket has reached full maturity as well.

But, compared to, say, higher end versions, it's actually priced quite competitively. A Gladiator Rubicon is actually about the same price as a Tacoma TRD Pro or a Colorado ZR2, and many would argue the Jeep is the most fun.

They are a great truck and best engine/trans. Bullet proof. None of that active learning/unreliable transmission garbage here. VQ 40 has great power and will run forever. However, the turning radius is horrible. They do take a big circle to turn around. Doesn't take a city block but almost lol.
My 2011 xTerra Pro-4X has 170K miles on it and going strong. Great off road and very utilitarian.
frontiers and tacomas are great lasting trucks. i own a 99 frontier single cab that i only use for work daily has 144k miles and that thing runs so smooth. bought it two years ago super cheap and only thing i have replaced is power steering pump and done a tune up. love my little pick up.

Answer,YES. Buy this truck if you need a truck. We will miss is simplicity and durability when it's no longer for sale. The upcoming newer model will have the tech, but the charm will be missed from this older model. I'm in the market for a truck and this is the top of my list even over the Tacoma and Colorado because it's built stronger and has proven itself to be the most durable without any modern tech issues all newer models have. NISMO Frontiers are really great as well.

These are such nice trucks if you like simple interiors. Flashback to the late 2000's when the infotainment screen wasn't the number one selling feature of a truck. My dad has a 2019 Frontier and absolutely loves it-- she gets the job done
Canadian Plane Spotter also easy enough to add an updated aftermarket infotainment system if you wanted apple car play for hands free safety.

I just sold my 2009 that had 175,000 miles on it. it was simple to maintain..I .went through 4 batteries,4 sets of tires,a fan clutch and a few alignments.

A very honest review!!!!!! After driving all the competition, I bought a 2019 for my daily driver. The reasons? It drove like a truck should, not a car. It didn't have a bunch of unwanted tech. VQ motor was plenty strong and I saved alot of money. It's a great buy!!!!

Think u should start showing more vehicles that have other options other than top tier all the time. U have your fan base so we will watch. Good video tho !

In today's market this is the truck to get. Simple, reliable and everything maintenance and repair related is well documented. This is the choice I'd make if I needed a simple practical work truck or even a daily driver. All of that DFI, turbo, automatic this and automatic that are ruining vehicles and sure you get a bit more MPGs but down the road you're faced with expensive repairs or you're forced to buy an extended warranty because you're scared about potential repairs.
After watching a recent review of the new Audi A6, simplicity like this becomes more and more appealing.
I just bought one of these lightly used and it's a great truck with not great gas milage. Way more affordable then the Toyota with a better crash rating than the Tocoma and no nonsense drive train over the small American trucks. Torqy engine that has good real world performance. No direct injection here to foul up valves. When I drive it i feel like I'm getting a technology break from my other car a 2017 Dodge Challenger. The Pro-4x runs well in tough conditions. Breaks could be better. Turning radius is not great but manageable. Other than that I'm a fan of the truck it's really straightforward. I mean what do you want it's a bulletproof cheap truck that performs. Looks great in the Pro-4x trim. The radio, although screen is small it actually works well and navigation works better than my wife's new Acura. iPhone syncs flawlessly. Radio sounds good with the included sub-woofer on the Pro-4x trim and rims are attractive. Nice ground clearance on the Pro-4x!
The Tacoma has a much better crash rating, the Frontier has the worst rating among new trucks do to it's age.
2019 Frontier pro4x = Fully boxed titan frame, dana 44 rear locker, dana front and spicer transfer case, rear disc brakes dual power seats and a powerful 4.0 reliable V6.
2020 tacoma trd= C channel frame rear drum brakes no dual power seats under powered 3.5 V6 and Toyota tax.

@@Proatcod10 motors are fine, its the faulty radiators that cracked and mixed trans and coolant. Anything after 2010 with the updated rads are pretty much guaranteed 300k without issue.

I still have my 07 pathfinder, 175K miles on her and the only major maintenance was a gasket ring for the trans fluid. she still runs like the day we got her new 12 yrs ago.

Hey this truck may be old, but honestly, you don't have a lot of cars like this that are this simple and easy to use. Some people will appreciate that. Not too offensive, no crazy tech, no BS, just a simple interior that you can use in minutes.
When they redo it the price will shoot up to match the others.
Sometimes simplicity is the best. And Nissan definitely gives you that with this Frontier. A truck you can put through hell and back with confidence and not have to worry about all those electronics going wrong - the last of its kind. My nephew and my brother-in-law each have a late model Frontier - they absolutely love these trucks! And very reliable, too. I'd get the Midnight Edition Frontier......it's actually really cool.
How does it feel when towing? A couple of weeks ago I towed a 6x10 U-Haul trailer loaded with furniture from north Alabama to Houston, TX.... I was pleasantly surprised. Plenty of power, adequate braking, very nice handling, and no issues with transmission or engine. Flawless operation made our trip better than I thought it would be. The Frontier is not a sissy truck. If Honda had such a truck I'd buy it, but the Ridgeline is more like a modern El Camino. My SV V6 4wd crew cab isn't fancy--- it's archaic, but comfortable, and it just gives me a good, sturdy, and small enough truck that fits in my garage.
Yeah, I'd say these things are tougher than most new trucks out there. No overcompensation, no electronic nannies. No fancy BS. Just an honest truck that can take a beating.

Yup, still good looking because it still looks and feels like a truck. The other auto makers really make cars with a truck bed. Example, just call the Tacoma a Camry with a bed with its wimpy no torque 3.5L engine and sit on the floor car feel.

I've test-driven the current and previous generation Tacoma V6 a few times in the past 6 years. I must say, this 'old' Frontier with its robust VQ40DE V6 feels like a sports car compared to (heavier) Tacoma with its' sloppy and cumbersome handling, dizzying ride quality, thin cheaply-padded seats and noticeably lethargic-feeling V6 engines. I can forgive the Frontier's old school feel, especially when it puts a smile on my face passing all those Sloyotas!
These test-drives were enlightening, as the Tacoma absolutely dominates the roads and mall parking lots where I live. You cannot turn your head and not see a Tacoma.
I've often complained of why Nissan USA has been so slow to bring the current Nissan Navara to the US to compete with the current Tacoma. The Navara has a solid platform that Mercedes-Benz even uses to underpin its' truck in Europe, Australia and elsewhere.
But then I hear friends complain about their Tacoma transmission problems and unrepairable cracked composite beds (yikes!). And I see so many 'sunburnt' Tacomas with peeling exterior paint everywhere on the road. Then I view online images of recalled 'hunchback' Tacomas with rusted buckled frames being replaced at Toyota dealerships. Note to Toyota: Using cheap quality steel and paint from the get-go in at least 2 generations of Tacomas has its price.
Lastly, a few years ago, I was surprised to see the Frontier had displaced the Tacoma for top reliability ranking, according to Consumer Reports annual predicted reliability data. Even the Chevy Colorado ranked higher than the Tacoma! The Frontier has repeated this top ranking several times since then...
After all this, I finally thought to myself, "Maybe there was virtue in deciding to keep the trusty Frontier around for so long?" It has become a tried-and-true warrior with proven long-term durability (if/when maintained properly)....Not only still a handsome choice, but an enduring solid value to many new and used truck buyers in the market!

Have had my 2019 since August of 19 and I love it so much. Fantastic daily, fun in the mountains after upgrading the shocks, skids and slides, and comfy.

got me a used 19 desert runner with 35k miles on it earlier this year. Loving it. Yes it's slow but I don't really care. I still get people checking it out. It's a charming little truck and has pretty much gotten me to love Nissan as a brand. Here's to trading it in for a newer Frontier whenever that time comes.

The most underrated Truck, but still one of the best. Only old schoolers that understand what a truck was intended for will appreciate it. Nissan still gets it!
Its probably the last truck on the market that you can modify for off-road without requiring a recalibration of modern safety assists systems. If you add a levelling kit to a modern midsize or full size pickup, the radar adaptive cruise and emergency braking system will no longer be aimed properly. Combine this with oversized tires and the braking algorithm will probably be out of spec because the tires will reduce brake effectiveness. I also suspect that modern stability control could be affected. These are issues that aren't often considered and should be considered when you're planning to buy a new vehicle. It almost forces you to buy the dedicated off-road model that suits your needs and they are now ridiculous in price. Just look at the price of the Tacoma Pro, Colorado ZR2, Gladiator Rubicon, and you'll see what I mean. You could easily modify a Frontier Pro 4 to approach the capabilities of these vehicles for a lot less money.
I had a 2009 Frontier 4x4 SE V6. Love that truck. Put 167K miles on before I sold it. The only complaint I had was the horrible turning radius, otherwise is was an affordable and capable sport truck.
The Nissan Frontier is a very good truck, has bright headlights and is very attractive plus it is quicker than the Tacoma
I live in Colorado and have a 2010 Pro-4X. Other than the turning radius, it is a great off road truck. It's more sure footed than the GMC Canyon 4x4 I drive for work . It has PLENTY of horsepower at 10,000 feet. I've used the off road features like the locking rear differential and downhill assist on a combo of muddy / icy mountain dirt roads / trails and have had no problems. Followed several trucks up a mtn road in light snow and had to keep slowing down for the ones in front because they were not handling the conditions as well as my Frontier, and I had Cooper AT3's not mud and snow tires on the truck.
Don't sell this truck short on off road capabilities simply because it has old tech. It has been great in tough conditions. Mine has 135,000 miles and ,other than replacing the radiator as a precautionary move when I bought it because of a known possible problem with 2012 and earlier radiators, all I've done is standard maintenance. (oil, transmission fluid, brakes, filters, tires). runs great as hasn't lost a step in the power or gas mileage.
BTW, regarding the basic model you drove. You should see the video on the one million mile Nissan Frontier with the 4 cylinder and manual transmission.

I'm in South Africa. I have one. 12 years old with a little over 187 000 miles on it. Love these trucks, it's been reliable and runs well. I've pulled some heavy loads and find it very stable. I'm not in a hurry to change it for anything else.
So it seems the Pro 4x with the manual is the best bet. Keep up the good reviews.

I do use medium on my Titan because the hot gets just way too hot. I think mine has like 4 levels so I use the third.
the fact is though the stereo while outdated is basic double din. easy to put a far better radio in with android auto and apple carplay. i see no reason to complain lol
Because you buy the truck so it should have an updated stereo in the first place. Smfh buy a used one indeed.
Good point. With the price discounts on the frontier, paying few hundred bucks for new stereo is worth it. The truck is simple reliable and small. That exactly what the ford ranger customers wanted but didn't get.
I bought a 2019 Frontier after crashing a 1997 Nissan pickup I had for 23 years. I was disappointed to not have a manual shift, manual locks, crank windows, manual mirrors, etc. 23 years and everything still worked perfect.

No blind spot monitoring - turn your head and check your blind spots.
No cross traffic alert - twist at your hips and look behind you or look behind you using your rear view mirror. These methods never fail unless the driver fails to apply them and they cost nothing and never break.

My 2000 frontier XE 3.3L V6 five speed is still running. Granted I’ve ran into some issues but that’s a given with old vehicles. Great and fun trucks

Bought my 2019 SV 4x2 just for that reason - no crap, just truck. And it's BEAUTIFUL!!! Averaging 20MPG for V6.
I have the 2010 version. A beast in the winter here in Canada. Never any major issues.
Its mindboggling why in north America Nissan still selling this old model while the rest of the world have the all new model for quite sometime now. Anyone can explain why???
Maybe because people in the US like old tech. GM and Chrysler still sell lots of cars with pushrod engines - something most other manufacturers abandoned in the 80’s.
My guess is that because the current frontier that is sold in the United States is also manufactured here which allows Nissan to avoid that pesky import tax on light trucks that are not made here(commonly referred to as the chicken tax) and in order to bring the current generation to the United States they would have to retool the factory to build it here or they wouldn’t be able to price it competitively if they built it overseas and added the tax on top.
If you compare cars from late 2016+ to even cars as far back as 2006-2012, you’d see almost all new cars are luxury cars. Technology is becoming cheaper and standard while safety equipment is mandated.
The only real way car companies denote status is by locking leather seat interiors behind expensive multi thousand dollar trim levels as opposed to cloth seats; and with fancy plastic badges glued on to the exterior.
Great review of an awesome truck. My Dad had a 2003 Frontier CC Long Bed. Great truck that lasted over 300K miles. Wish List for new one: 1) MUST improve the turning circle/radius! He used to say it was dangerously bad at times. 2) Somewhat larger interior of CC as it felt smaller than a compact car. 3) 48" (standard pallet size) between wheel wells 4) Payload of 1,500 Lbs + not including Driver.

I bought a 2006 Nismo Frontier new back in 2006. I had 100k trouble free miles when I sold it 7 years later. It had excellent low end torque and was a billy goat off road. I did a lot of highway driving and was very comfortable. I truly feel it was a better build quality then my 3rd gen Tacoma.
I have one .. 2012 bought it new. It's a workhorse. Doesn't have the same corks and features as others LOL.
But I'm pleased with it
A pickup truck doesn't need to have Mercedes Benz luxury to be effective and fun.

I bought a Frontier Pro 4X new in 2017, and I really like my truck. Simple, well-built, and rock solid - all the things I want in a truck without the gizmos to break down. And it looks great!
These trucks will outlast pretty much anything simple v6 and 5 speed auto ,these engines are long lasting with proper maintenance, there is a reason why Nissan didn’t touch these for as long as they did, similar to Toyota’s 4Runner 4.0 Powertrain and tundras 5.7 Powertrain same for years and years

I actually use my 06 Xterra as a tow vehicle, dog hauler, beach comber & daily driver. I thoroughly enjoy the truck & TOTALLY glad it has the hard durable plastic. Have not damaged it yet. The fold down front seat is a RARE plus when hauling long items & the hard plastic rear cargo area is AWESOME. make a mess, who cares. Whip & go can't damaged it.
Only thing I wish is it had rubber floors like my buddies FJ Cruiser.
I got to live with driving a 2019 2WD V6 model for two weeks earlier this year. Except for the gas mileage, I had little to no complaints. There's nothing wrong with a dated truck; it's less complicated than newer trucks.
There is a huge benefit of it being 10+ years old is that they have had enough time to fix all its problems so basically the needed one shouldn’t have many problems
This is what all manufactures should do. Make the truck long enough to fix their weakspots. Tried and true like nissan. They stick to one platform because they know it works. Unlike all these manufactures who change design, engines and powertrain every 5 years and never perfect their stuff. 👍good job nissan! At the end of the day thats what a truck should be reliable and tried and true
totally agree! love that they brought back the awful gas mileage, weak ass engine and zero safety features! bravo! best part is we get to pay almost 40 grand for the privilege too. amazing!
@Nissan370Z there's this weird assumption out there that updating a car ruins its reliability. why can't they leave the reliable engine and update the rest of the vehicle? also you can't really be clamoring for an engine that puts out those type of hp numbers, at ~12 mpg??
just bought a 2019 SV king cab. because..... because, the 2008 that i bought in 2007 that i drove for 12 years, putting 341,000 miles on it. and the only trouble was the strawberry milkshake at 140,000 miles (transmission) once that got fixed i drove it for another 210,000 miles. was so good that i got the new one. keep your fancy schmancy trucks. this thing works!
It’s interesting how without a refresh, it’s still very utilitarian and reliable while being faster than the Toyota Tacoma and some other American trucks. Glad a manual transmission truck option is still available.
But it’s very weird to see Nissan’s cars slowly falling behind Hyundai and Kia. Hope they can turn it around soon.
Nissan just announced that they are scrapping the CVT, nightmares, and going back to their 5 speed transmissions.

This truck is truly ideal because it does not have all those fancy new electronics that add cost to vehicles these days. It is s simple and nice truck.

I own a '15 cc with a 4.0 v6 and 5 spd auto bought it w 46k and a 3 year aftermarket mechanical warranty for 21k and im really happy with it. I consistantly get 18 mpg and i am happy with it, wish I had a bigger gas tank though. Only get 300 gal per tank but I'll live. Has bluetooth and it is a comfortable interior. It tows everything I hook up to pretty easily and like he said it feels fast with all that torque. I love my truck not to big but big enough
