- Hello and welcome to Badger Workshop. I needed a new double bed so I decided to build one cheaply out of 4x2 and 3x2 CLS timber.

With the quality and volume of builds you do, you should have WAY more subscribers. Another fine project, Matt.
Thank you John. That is greatly appreciated
John, your support of smaller channels is really neat :)
Totally agree with John! Loving the chat on your videos as well
worthy of the makers mob i think.
Nice job and of course much better than buying a cheap bed.
Thank you Phil
Appreciate the use of proper safety gear!!! Great example 😃👍
Thank you
Glad to hear you referring to the timber sizes as 4x2's and 3x2's instead of the American way - 2x4's and 2x3's :)
When we did the slats I secured the end slat with dowels and then stapled all the other slats on to some webbing. Easy and quick. Also easier to dismantle in the future.
Nice build Matt and a worthy project for your new home
Thank you
Nice bed Matt. Simple but elegant 👍👍👍
Thank you
Cracking job of work Matt!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you
Well done it’s a good looking bed
Thank you
Brilliant job Matt.
Thank you
Thanks for interesting and useful video. This bed is simple, modern and awesome.
Thank you very much
@@Badgerworkshop You're welcome. Take care.
Awesome Matt! Great video and a great build.

Thank you Brian
Nice build THANKS
Thank you
very nice Matt,well done mate
Thank you
Nice one Matt
Thank you
Great job
Thank you
Great work again Matt. I loved those clamping blocks. What a genius idea! 😀
Thank you. They worked ok. Sometimes needs must
Great build Matt! The soft headboard is a lovely touch. I need to make a new bed soon and I like the simple design.
Thanks Ali. I look forward to seeing what you make.
Love it Matt 😉
Thank you
I also go to bed in my work clothes :) Cool project, it looks beautiful
Thank you. Saves time in the morning
I find that my shoes wake me up in the middle of the night, though.
Great looking bed mate, I maybe would have used slighty thicker slates, keep safe.
Thank you
It is not perfect materials but is nice and cheep and do the job. Nice project very sleepy :)
Thank you
Nice project as always, please keep them coming.
I made my lad a bed recently, he wanted 'chunky & Industrial' so I used 4x4 posts and scaffold boards (A LOT of sanding required) with cranked band & hook gate hinges for the hardware. They worked surprisingly well and he got the look he wanted.
That sounds great. I love the industrial look
Brilliantly simple, yet an elegant bed frame. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you
Great video Matt, perfect timing for me too as I have been looking at making my own bed and looked at loads of videos on here, yours is the best by far.
Thank you very much. Good luck with yours
Another awesome build Matt. Bravo 👏
Thank you
Nice one Matt. But you was as convincing as my kids pretending to sleep at the end there 😆
Thanks John. Your not my real dad
@@Badgerworkshop any more talk like that and I send you to bed with out dinner.
Excellent work as usual. I'm quite a fan of CLS. It's cheap, strong and if you're fussy when buying it can be good looking and relatively knot free. 👍
Yes so am i
I was going to comment but then I saw John Heisz' comment and he said it best 👍
That’s Keith. It’s great to hear that form you and John.
That is a brilliant bed. I really like the simplicity of it. Great job !
Thank you
Fantastic! Looks good and strong. Hope the slats hold up to any vigorous action they may get, but I suppose the weight is spread out over quite a few slats. I'm a big fan of using CLS for cheapness, but I usually spend a bit of time picking out the straightest and most unblemished that I can find.
Thank you Akan
Nice solid design. I like the way you improvised with the clamping blocks. Noted for future use :)
Thanks Mike. You never have the clamps you need
Great looking bed, most wouldn't even know it was made with construction lumber!
Thank you very much
Bare softwood looks so Scandinavian.
Good project Matt I really like all projects you do keep up the hard work keep safe
Thank you very much
Matt, just wondering, couldn't you just recess that one plate into the post a bit, with a mortise chiseled out behind the hole where the bolt goes? That way you wouldn't need a shim on the other part?
Mat love your videos, they inspire me to continue myself. Thank you
Thank you very much
Nice job Matt! 👍
Thank you Barrie
Nice job. Also built a king-sized bed base recently. Essentially built two seperate single bases that join together in order to move it into our room. Like your idea better though. My next move is to build storage drawers for the base. Like your content
Thank you very much. Drawers are a good idea.
Hi Matt, I made a bed very similar to yours about 12 mths back, still going strong and I'm about 5 stones heavier than you. Excellent video pal, keep them coming. Regards Jim
Thank you Jim
Nicely done Matt. Bought a flat pack ottoman bed for my daughter. I think it took as long to put it together as yours did to build.
Thank you
Great video and a great bed.
Thank you
Great work Matt!
Thank you
Great work Matt, Good Video, Greeting from Nice France.
Thank you very much
I'm actually in need of a new bed as my IKEA one is starting to fall to bits! I was thinking of a design last night and this is basically it!
Would look really good with some brass dowel on the leg, even if they're just for show!
Everything looks better with brass
Nicely done matt, I also like the clamping blocks very ingenious. I actually didn't expect Danish oil I was banking on India ink all the way 🤔😊
Thank you. I don’t think I would have had enough ink for this
@@Badgerworkshop ye I was looking for some the other day, I could only find small pots, do you get larger containers of it mat?
Only about 500ml
Hi Matt I really enjoyed that video make one of your best ones for a good while came out great well done mate
Thanks Ben
Nice build Matt I've tried them brackets I can never get them to keep tight always come lose
Thank you. I will let you know if I end up on the floor in a weeks time
Actually that doesn't look cheap to me at all and i didnt expect to be so nice , i love the headboard and the colour of the fabric is very nice . How much more or less did it cost ? Cool job .!!!!! Now it is time to make a night stand !!!!!!!
Under £100. That’s on my to do list
could you possibly show me how to make a sofa frame with hand tools please
Nice
Thanks
👍
Mate fairplay that looks great good job on the headboard aswell looks ace nice build matt. How are you finding the makita red orbital sander.
Thank you. It’s a great, cheap little tool
@@Badgerworkshop great ill order it to replace mine
Those flatpack beds, even when they have predrilled holes in the slats, still split when you screw them down. A washer would be a good idea if it wasn't for the screw head then standing up proud and catching the matress.I think we lose a lot of strength and stability because of this need for dismantle-ability.
A great build and well executed at every stage Matt. Now get to sleep, you've been a busy boy, shhhhh.
Thanks Keith. Night night
C16 or higher grade, I want to build a high bed for my autistic child to keep him safe, I’m looking for high cot bed for him never attempted it before, but going to give a try
I'm surprised the cut down CLS was strong enough for the slats. Personally I would have bought some laminated slats from Ikea and sized the bed around those. The King Size (200 x 150) LURÖY
Slatted bed base is only £30
That’s why I said you could do that
@@Badgerworkshop Oh yeah, I missed that bit 🤭
Not really in the spirit of building your own either. He could just buy all his furniture from IKEA but then we wouldn't have this great channel to follow!
Great build. Those two dowels equate to a pretty tiny tenon though, looks like you could have fitted 4-5? I suppose it all depends on how much action you're getting :)
It will be more than strong enough
The headboard cross pieces aren't taking any weight
@@rjamsbury1, astute.
Great video as always Matt - out of curiosity how did you do fold the fabric for the headboard? both to get the vertical line, and such clean corners?
Thank you very much. You have managed to spot my mistake. The fabric I had was about 4cm to short. I sprayed a couple of offcuts with glue and folded them over. I could then get them stretched and strapped on the ends.
Thought it was a point of style. That's not a bug, it's a feature!
Have to say it look really good and strong how long did it take to make
Thank you. About a day on total but it’s was over a few days with waiting for glue to dry
Great bed! How much was the cost all in?
Thanks Phill. I not quite sure but under £100
Badger Workshop nice!
How did the cost work out compared to buying a bed?
Cost under £100
Thanks Matt nice job. Please don't test it out in video.
The badgeler bed, where all the magic happens.
If you had used India ink it would of been 80’s awesome but would have required a katana to be hung above it.
These are the rules I think.
Then it would have been a proper bachelors pad
I think you are right.
But the trend of black ash veneer is coming back here in Germany. I grew up with it and definetly have grown out of it. Ugly stuff!
Etna. A black ash hifi tower, now that’s 80’s.
😃👍🏻🛏️👊🏻
Yo Matt, me and my dad love watching your videos! One question we had - when drilling a pilot hole, do you go all the way through the first bit of wood and into the second one a bit? or just through the first and not into the second (or a third different way?)
Cheers!
Thank you. I drill pilot holes when I am working with thin material or close to the edge. So it depends on the situation. Sometimes just the first but other times both of close to the edge.
I’m in the US. Is a 4x2 the same as a 2x4? ;-) Thank you for the video.
It is. We say it the other way around
Are we talking metric or Imperial?
Loving those chunky legs too, mate👍🏽
Awesome build, what was the total cost?
Thanks Bill. It was under £100
@@Badgerworkshop
Wow, that's bloody brilliant mate 👍🏽
You definitely could not buy one brand new for that price.
Another great video. What is the planer/thicknesser/jointer you use and does your table saw do dado/rabbit cuts?
Thank you. It’s made by metabo. The saw does not take a dado blade but can make t cuts in a few passes
I'd send you some ratchet straps for clamping such things as headboards but don't know your address and they're probably as cheap there as they are here in the US. In a pinch I've used rope and a trucker's hitch. Your way worked, though, so why am I even typing this? Peace.
I have some ratchet straps but I did not think of using them. It’s a good idea and I will do that next time.
Why would you use CLS wood to build a bed ,Its fall of chemicals .
No it’s not
@@Badgerworkshop That's good then matt anyways good job well done looks cool man ,Was not having a dig just showing concern :) .
And the cost was?!. Hehehe...
I don’t know exactly but under £100
I give this one 5 out of 5 bananas 🍌🍌🍌🍌🍌 patreon member raffle for a 1 night sleep over ??!!
Thank you. Haha no one wants that
