Join me as I bushwhack 3 hours to a hidden lake. For a bit, I get completely lost in the woods. Eventually I find my way to the site, camp in a tent, do a little campfire cooking, drink some beers, sleep in a tent. And do the whole thing in the morning. The hike out is a montage, so it goes by quick.

I have always questioned, whenever I hear about someone getting lost in this day and age of gps, Google maps, etc...but your video just showed the world exactly how easily it can happen. What you think is a trail, just ends, add a little dehydration, and boom, on bad choice leads to another. I am glad it worked out, good vid to teach others of how things go south fast. Keep up the good work.
Thanks man! Even though it was brief (getting lost), it was pretty unnerving. You're right, the dehydration definitely made things worse. I should have brought water (dumb). I learned a lot from the mistakes in this one and I'll know better what to do next time.
this video was great, winderful job not panicking
i got lost last yr while deer hunting and i panicked,
well done sir
that's why I have a map of my location and the best thing a compass. Reason being is batteries can go dead or there's no signal available.
@The BaldUglyGuy @Sam Bananas I had the same thing happen to me a mile or five from my car 🚗 from my kayak getting stuck on the rocks. I had a massive meltdown because the kayak I had at the time was heavy (70-85 pounds)!!! I still shudder to this day.
Being lost bushwacking through young tangled forest brush is a nightmare. I had this happen to me after dark about 10 years ago. It took hours and hours to get out. I still fight with claustrophobia when I'm in woods like that. Even 10 or 20 feet from the trail I can feel it at times... Nice way to keep your cool. You got a new sub
Thanks Bob! Dude I agree it was a scary feeling. I had to keep stopping and reset mentally.
@@CampingwithSamBananas you did a great job keeping your cool. I think this kind of thing happens to everyone at some point. Most wouldn't have the guts to put it out there. Kudos dude!
I agree kudos to Sam and for you Sir it may have taken some time but you didn't give up and you got out of there. Kudos to you also.
Sam, Sam, Sam! Going on a bush-whacking adventure without water? I make lots of mistakes but going out without water on no trail is not one of them. Really glad you made it back OK. It's not altogether bad that you made that mistake because we can all learn from this mistake and realize that even experienced backpackers, such as yourself, can put themselves in difficult situations if we're not careful. Please continue to make these very interesting videos.
Yep this was not the best move going on without water, but luckily it all worked out. Glad you're enjoying the videos bud!
Legend has it that on a dark moonless night if you go out to that lake and listen carefully you can hear "Oh for crying out loud" still echoing through the forest.
🤣
Your mom's hiking group looks like a smart group of kids! Especially that one with the MSU hat! 💚🤍
I agree 👍
Such an awesome adventure!! Thank you for the video it was very inspiring!!!
Thank you!
I’m so glad you shared this video. A LOT of other people wouldn’t have. I have been lost in the woods before, very scary. This is something someone can take something from. Keep up with the great videos! I will keep watching!
Thank you Shannon!

Great video, Sam! None of us are perfect. I'm glad things worked out ok. Great adventure.

Wow, Sam, you are hard-core! I really admire your tenaciousness and sense of adventure! Very enjoyable video.....thanks!

That was a tough one for you but you Heald your head and worked your way out if there well done .:) love the videos .
Bravo Bananas! 👏🏻 Bushwacking is no joke, and filming while shwacking must have made for an added layer of difficulty. One suggestion-bring engineering tape the next time you bushwhack. You can mark areas you cleared with the orange tape, and that way you can find your way back easier. Plus, if you go to the same area again you have your path laid out for easier trekking 👍🏻
Dude for real, it's so much more difficult to do this while filiming it. That's an interesting idea with the tape. I don't know if I'll do this again anytime soon, but we'll see!
Thumbs Up for Sam!!♥️👍 He reminds me of He-Man!! Does anyone else remember that show?

This was an experience. Thank goodness nothing bad was added to the equation, such as a twisted ankle. You did good.
Thanks Joe! This was a classic example of biting off more than you can chew. Luckily it all came out fine.
Sam...thanks for doing this video!! I am sure it was tough on you but enjoyed seeing the real version of how things really go in the woods. Most would have deleted out the hard parts and the lost part. Nice to see some realistic video of this type of outing. Again...thanks!!!
Thank you for saying that. It really means a lot. I really try to show it as it actually happens. What I'm going through, mistakes I make all of that. I'm glad you liked it!
Great adventure Sam and nice job hanging tough.
I’m in NM and a friend and I backpacked up the Santa Fe ski basin thinking it would cut off some time to get to some alpine lakes. The trail at the top ended up being a non system and we had to go deep into the forest to access another route. This was way before cell phones, etc so we were depending on a map of the area to guide us out. Exhausting and stressful at times but we made it and celebrated. Cheers🍺
Dude that's crazy! I'm sure it made for some amazing memories though ❤
That was awesome, glad you shared it with us, I was rooting for you all the way! Please don't take risks on our behalf tho, stay safe brother x from Great Britain

Really great representation of ‘that feeling’ in real time. Years ago i was trying to walk out of the bush after an overnight when i passed a big rock outcrop that i had passed an hour before 😳. It’s a stomach in the shoes moment, but you handled it with calm and smarts. Well done.

Thank you David, I really appreciate it! I do have a bright orange compass my mom got me, but I thought (incorrectly) that I wouldn't need it on this trip. It weighs almost nothing, so I need to make sure it's always in my pack.

Thanks bud!
Hey, we all have taken that "turn" or thought it was a "shorter, easier " way ahead. Im just glad you show this kinda stuff, its not all a trail you can walk on in flip flops, but you learn from every outing. Great idea on the fire starters as well, way to go "Mom"! Cant wait till the next video. Thank you Sam Bananas!
Thank you! All of that, thank you 😊 🙏
@@CampingwithSamBananas I really like that you keep it so real.
@@char81998 Haha thanks man! I do my best, that's for sure.
You don't have to add the cardboard egg carton, it just helps with a little more flame. Vaseline and cotton balls work good. My personal favorite is the little bottle of hand sanitizer..good fire starter
I have been in a similar situation lately, totally couldn't see it coming. Suddenly, I was not only lost but also kinda locked in the wilderness, couldn't figure out how to get out anymore. It took me a broken tripod, many minor injuries and lots of energy and sweat to find a way out. There were moments where some light panic kicked in, and I'm totally not that type of guy. Couldn't even call for rescue because zero cell service.
Dude I'm really glad you made it out. I bet you'll never forget that trip.
I've been through thickets like that down here in the Atchafalaya Basin. Not fun. I was going to say I think your mom would understand if you didn't show up after the adventure you had. Then you show up at the end anyway. Good man Sam for doing that. Thanks buddy.

Thank you! I really love this video. I’m glad you did too.
You wore me out just watching you! Loved the video! 🤗
Haha nice, glad you liked it!
I appreciate you recorded your experience. Bushwhacking will always be more difficult but usually more rewarding. I came away with one piece of advice. Always go in with water. I go in with a liter minimum every time even for a short hike. I wound up in a similar predicament one time in Shining Rock Wilderness where I miscalculated and ended up camping with no water. Luckily I found some soon the next morning.
Yeah you're right and I won't go in without water again.
I must be watching all your videos tonight. Way to keep your cool. I would have panicked and drank warm beer until... something interesting happened!

I've never been in any woods that I didn't know. But I've never been out of allegheny county in the woods either. I can only imagine the frustration of not being sure of what direction to go. Let alone the weeds and no water. I do appreciate your experiences and you taking us along.
Thanks brother! I appreciate you watching. I'm just happy I made it out of the situation unscathed to be honest
I saw this video today and Sam oh Sam! That was a heck of an adventure! I am so glad you made it out of the woods alive. I am sure you have learned a lot from this adventure. In the wink of an eye things can go very dangerous. Be careful Sam. Irma from the Netherlands.
Hi Irma! I think this was one of my favorites. Glad you enjoyed it and yes I learned a lot in this video.
Enjoy your channel very much…… keep up the hard work!
Thank you so much Marty!
If that isn’t enough of a reason to purchase a gps unit, as well as a locator… I don’t know what is. I got lost in the woods ONCE. Now it will never happen again. I don’t enter the woods without my Garmin gps watch, and my stand alone garmin fortrex gps unit. And just in case those would fail.. I always carry neon colored ribbon to mark my trail. Glad you found your way out. The fact that you were willing to post your failure for the world to see is a real testament to your character. You earned my sub with this one.
Hey thanks my friend! I did get a lot of criticism on this one, but I believe in keeping it real and showing it as it really happens. The sub and comment are very much appreciated
It's happened to me twice. My trouble was I didn't trust my compass, thinking it had to be broken. It's a funny feeling to walk a couple hours and find that you made a complete circle. I learned to trust your compass. Also the circles I would take would always be to the left. Your turn will always be determined by what side your dominant leg is. Mine happens to be the left, and it's true that if you try walking to the opposite side of trees of your dominant leg, it helps keep you walking in a straighter line. So I'll walk to the right side of trees. I've tested it and it does work.
Very interesting!
Those berries are pokeweed, pretty but poisonous. Glad you made it out of the bush, most importantly you didn't panic, and took time to get your bearings. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks bud! It was tough not to panic for a minute but I just took a five and collected myself. Rule number 1 right?
@@CampingwithSamBananas Exactly, great job!
That was brutal. Cheers
Haha dude I had anxiety while watching it. I've never watched it again. It was rough for sure.
I remember hiking up El Cajon mountain in San Diego - a nasty climb with both downhills and uphills on the ascent and return, and missing a turn which led me onto a complete mile long loop trail off to the side that ended right back where I started. I could see my car down on the highway a couple miles away, but couldn’t find the trail. And the vegetation being chaparral, it is almost impossible to traverse due to its thickness. It was even worse knowing that I could see my escape but had no choice but to hope I didn’t repeat that loop again. Had I done so, I’d have slept on the trail.
You rocked it bro.
Dude that's wild! Thank god you got out, because it doesn't sound like you had camping gear.
@@CampingwithSamBananas I did not. I had my survival pouch and enough power bars to last awhile, but this was when I was younger and before I ever considered bringing any kind of shelter with me.
You really earned this one, don't blame you for not wanting to do it again, hats off to you!!!

You looked bushed and wacked out but well done you! Nobody else has done this quite like you have. Great viewing, thank you.

It's freaky when you're lost in deep woods. As you turn around everything in every direction looks the same. Happened to me on a hunting trip. It was a overcast day so no sun to find direction. Ended up finding direction by moss on the trees and after a long hike made it back to the river we were camped by. Took a while to hike upriver to find our campsite but what a relief! You'll do it again but will be more prepared. Maybe wear long sleeves, always take water.

This one might be my new favorite, Sam. You are Total Pro for this misadventure. I'm way too old now to walk into any place that I don't know how to walk out of. When I do leave my backyard, cel service is always questionable, if it even exists- and standalone GPS is too rich for my blood. If I can't rely on a compass and a hard copy map, I don't go. I don't have to. I have friends like you to do it for me, and I appreciate that. Thanks so much for this video, man, and keep up the good work.

@@CampingwithSamBananas hahah awesome
It really doesn’t take much to get yourself in a bad situation. It’s easy to say you should just be prepared when you go out but it seems it’s that “just a short hike” that gets you in trouble. My experience was while out geocaching. It was a small 51acre lot so I figured just a quick in and out. It was 98 degrees and thinking it was quick I didn’t bring water either. Following the trails I got to the cache no problem but heading out I thought instead of taking the long way (following clear trails) I would just walk across an overgrown field. About half way across a 350 yard field with weeds over my head… I passed out. I felt it coming so I knelt down and all black. When I came to, I had fallen into a blackberry bush. That bush saved me… it was the only moisture I had. I laid in the shade of that bush and ate some berries until my breathing was slowed… then finished my way across that field slowly. Learned A LOT from that experience.
That’s a crazy story! And yes I learned a lot from my experience as well
There are many types of vines in the woods, poison ivy ( I saw), poison oak & sumac, honeysuckle grows wild, sometimes wisteria as well. The vines u ?ed I'd bet are muscadine ( love their fruit). The berries we were told are china berries & are toxic. Makes a pretty stain too.
Cool! Good info Lanae and thanks for watching!
Love your video's. That field with all the golden rod at the edge was terrible hopefully youre not as allergic as I am.
I did have a reaction. Had to go to Urgent Care. Dr said it was poison ivy but she wasn't sure. Maybe it was the golden rod
I've gone hiking in an area like that once. No trail, no machete and I reached a point where the bramble was just a wall. A WALL that you could barely get your arm into. It was frankly a little scary since I had gone on a whim and I had no water or equipment and didn't tell anyone where I was going. It was easy to get out because the trail I blazed was the only choice. At least my arms, legs and head were all covered.
Dude yes it can get quite scary
Sam, do something with those straps or u will meet gravity. Good vid as always. Keep them coming. Ohhh.. one more thing. If you want to aim the sparks, point the firesteel onto the firestarter, put the striker on it and PULL the Ferro Rod towords you.
Haha dude believe me, I was cringing watching those straps dangle while I was editing the video. I've done it on a few others as well. I'm happy to report that those straps were secured on my latest trip (editing now). As for the ferro rod, I've seen this done on Corporal's Corner. I usually brace the ferro rod against the wood and birch bark. I don't know why I didn't this time. But it's a great idea and the next trip I do that allows for a fire, I'm going to do it that way. Thanks for the tips and thanks for watching!
Holy crap I felt tired after watching this and I didn’t do anything way to push thru good job
Thanks bud. I was a tough trip but I'm glad I did it
it's just so hard to compete with Steve and Gryllz.. A real specialized genre. Keep at it.
Thank you! That's high praise even being mentioned in the same sentence as those two.
Well Sam that was quite the adventure. I’ve been in the woods a lot during my lifetime but I have to say that had to be the thickest forest I have ever seen. BTW it look like you had a wrestling match with a mountain lion. Yikes
Haha dude this was a rough one. I bit off way more than I could chew. It was one for the books though and I'm glad you liked it.
20 minute hot soak in a large salty bath for weary muscles and scratches, just before bed, gently scrub the wounds with soap lather, it suspends any bacteria, after drying off, optional, rub in a moisturiser, like organic coconut oil
[Epsom Salts, just as an example, in the bath as you get in, skin absorbs any minerals in the water, magnesium and other goodies, humanity has always loved bathing in the sea, the sea side is a happy place.]
Your arms are a perfect advertisement about why I've always since I was a kid worn long sleeves when hiking in grass and long pants for that matter. I've seen people cut up a lot worse. As far as getting lost always carry a compass!
Yeah I just didn't anticipate the direction this trip would go. In the future I need long sleeves. You can I wore a long sleeve shirt on the way out.
we call that beast mode .....more please ...lol
Haha thanks man! Definitely should head back there soon. It’d be a lot easier in the winter.
Oh yeah !!!
Yeah had to comment on this one… dude carry a compass and take 5 minutes to shoot an azimuth in the direction you want to go. The reverse is to get back to the same general area you started from. Good on you for not losing your cool and panicking. (At least on camera) walking in tall grass put a long light stick in front of you horizontally, will knock the grass down save on minor cuts and abrasions. Drive on bud!
Great tips, thanks man! I was positive I wouldn’t lose signal so I didn’t bother with the compass. I was lucky this time and learned a lesson.
