    I just found out by accident some bags of split peas do in fact sprout. How much I don't know, but mine from the dollar store I let soak in a jar for three days changing the water everyday and tails started emerge. I'm going to do an experiment with the traditional way of sprouting on them to see if tail will turn into shoot. There's one person on CZcams that shows what they look like sprouted with a little longer tail. Thx for the info on them, I'm just getting into them and trying to understand the cooking methods.

    Thanks for the info so far, it's helped me out in my first contact with dried peas from scratch. I just made it up as I went along, put 25 grams of peas in a kilner jar, added loads of freshly boiled water and screwed the top on. In 2 hours they weighed 46 grams, so nearly doubled in weight in 2 hours. I've just put them in fresh boiled water again and shall let them run over night and see what happens. After setting this up I searched for how to do it properly and found this video of yours, seems I am probably headed in the right direction, You mention a part two of the video, but I don't know what it is called to search for it, can you help me with the name of the video please? • @JudiintheKitchen
      @JudiintheKitchen  Před 2 lety

      Hi Debby! Certainly you could freeze the cooked peas! Do whatever you feel most comfortable with. If nothing else, try to include them in soups. Freeze them in small amounts that you think you'd use at one time. That makes things much easier when you want to include them in a meal. Note that split peas normally become quite soft when cooked (think pea soup), so this may give you a clue on how to freeze them. I hope it works well for you. Thanks for watching and asking! Take care :)

    How are these peas dried after picking? How do they get they hard and processed ? Is there an industrial process ? Thank you

    • @JudiintheKitchen
      @JudiintheKitchen  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi! I'm sure there is an industrial process to drying commercial peas that we find in the market. The volume would be too much for small-scale operations. They are first picked at their peak of ripeness, shelled, then dried. The peas will naturally split at some point during the drying process when an inner skin around the pea is removed during the processing. The whole dried peas must be treated in a somewhat different way so the inner skin remains in tact so they stay whole when dried. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching :)

    I disagree, split peas have oligosaccharides and phytic acids; soak overnight with warm baking soda water on the counter then rinse and cook--degasses and makes them digestible. That is to say, the phytic acid is gone, the simple sugars are gone, and the human body can absorb all the good things in the split peas with complete digestion.

    • @JudiintheKitchen
      @JudiintheKitchen  Před rokem +1

      Hi! I don't think it's mandatory for you to remove the skins that came off the peas. You could if you want, but why bother if you don't have to? Do so if you have an aversion to them, but it's really optional. Likewise for the skins from chickpeas. They're perfectly edible. Thanks for watching and asking :)

    • @JudiintheKitchen

      Interesting! Perhaps they were really yellow peas that hadn't matured? I can't say for sure, as I've never seen that happen before. If they have an "off" aroma, mold, or insect damage, they may not be good to eat. Otherwise, they are PROBABLY OK to eat. But if you cook them and notice anything that doesn't seem "right," they should be tossed. I hope this helps! Thanks for watching :)

    Split peas are just 'regular' peas split so you can cook them faster / easier - just get frozen peas in bags and eat them regularly. It's like eating pre-packaged creamed spinach - if it's easier you will eat it more regularly - don't make it too complicated ok ?
