Al Murray is playing a character 'The pub landlord' hence the beer pumps. This stereotypical character reflects the men who used to run pubs (called landlords) , who were typically middle aged conservative types, who had a strong (but not always informed) opinion on everything, were very patriotic, and also a traditional view on mens and womens roles. This comedy persona allows him to play off national stereotypes, and show todays world and issues through this narrow, blinkered perspective for comedy effect. Given many of us encountered people with these outlook and world views growing up, its comedy gold when applied to life today. Also his rapport with the audience works well, especially as he spends time getting to know members of the audience at the beginning of his show so he can play off them and interact later as part of the joke and stories. Great fun!

Barbara Windsor "GET AAT OF MY PUB" 😆 Us English use comedy as a sign of affection. If it were anything else we would be bullies. We are way far off and gone from that. You should hear what I call my 90 year old mother and how she retaliates when I visit her. Then we hug and reminisce. I still blame her for me, she must have dropped me multiple times onto my head when I was a baby. "It's not my fault" I keep telling her !

Al Murray is even funnier once you realise that the man behind the Pub Landlord character is really taking the piss out of how the British take the piss out of foreigners - our unshakeable sense of national superiority, obsession with the past glories of Empire, etc. He's actually a very well-spoken and highly educated man, adopting the stereotypical persona of a working class pub landlord for comedic purposes. That's not even his real accent! A lot of British humour is multilayered in this way, which is why some people from outside the UK don't quite get it and its subtleties. I'd recommend Micky Flannagan as an example of a comedian whose humour is a lot more straightforward and universal. Yet to see any reactors not find Micky hilarious!

      @berranari1 Před 4 měsíci

I'm not disagreeing with you. But if you know a "conservative" person, you probably won't take them out to see a comedian.
So conservative and comedy really don't belong together as most conservative people are what comedy is making fun of.
      Especially in America.
Americans made movies like Bridgette Jones Diaries that are all about the conservative people in Britain being the subject of the humour.
Certainly not my "cup of tea".
I prefer Australian humour and the British and Irish stuff.
I used to like Tom Green. He was very far from conservative.
      George Carlin was great.
Modern American comedy is bad though. Look at what happens when Chris Rock says something actually funny. 🤔
Just like Will Smith, the USA in general has *lost* its sense of humour.
That's okay because of the British and others.
Izmo from Finland is hilarious. 😂

@@tntreactions - You are entitled to your opinion and we should respect that, but I can honestly say that apart from Benny Hill and a few like him, British comedy is far from slapstick and most of the descriptions you make.
We all like different things but please don’t use blanket opinions on the whole of British comedy - I sincerely hope you give yourself a chance to enjoy more comedy from this side of the pond.

I'm Irish and the English treated us like sh*t for 700 years, watch How The British Starved Ireland
4:12 Most Americans don't get that, probably because they don't know what God Save the Queen (King) is and/or don't know the tune

One thing about British comedy is that we will make a joke about anything at all, even if it is tasteless and objectionable to other people. An example of such occurred when Marc Bolan, the lead singer for a group called T-Rex back in the 70's, died in a car crash at a time when radio was king. Within 5 minutes of the announcement we heard "Marc Bolan was on the radio today. Yes, and the dashboard, the front window, the seat belts". A second example shows that even our Royal Family aren't exempt, after the announcement of Lady Di's death we got "She was asleep as soon as her head hit that pillow (pillar)".
