  • William G. Dever, Distinguished Visiting Professor, Lycoming College, and Professor Emeritus of Near Eastern Studies, Arizona State University, presents the 2014 Tenenbaum Lecture (February 3, 2014). His illustrated lecture showcases recent archaeological evidence that reveals the differences in beliefs and practices of ordinary people in ancient Israel compared to the elitist, idealist portrait in the Bible, particularly the ongoing veneration of the Canaanite Goddess Asherah.
The Tenenbaum Family Lectureship in Judaic Studies salutes the family of the late Meyer W. Tenenbaum '31C-'32L of Savannah, Georgia.

MOST OF ALL ONE GOD OF POWER/LIFE TRUE LOVE DOES NOT NEED A WIFE BECAUSE ONE GOD OF POWER TREUE LOVE IS NOT; NOT; NOT A DEAD ALMIGHTY GOD SEED OF CREATION; THEREFORE ONE GOD OF POWER TRUE LOVE IS NEITHER MALE NOR FEMALE. MORQUE LETS REMEMBER THIS DEAD ALMIGHTY GOD SEED OF CREATION IS ENERMOUS FOR YE CAN SEE THE SIEZE OF CREATION SEED OF ANIMALS; HUMANS PLANTS ETC; BUT THEY ARE ALL FROM A DEAD SEED. It's interesting that the dove is seen as a symbol for Asherah, and the holy spirit of God is seen as a dove as well. Perhaps they didn't really stop worshiping Asherah, they just changed her into gods holy spirit and started representing her, with her symbol (the dove).
This would make the Christian view of the Father, the son, and the holy spirit (ghost) make more sense, because it would become the father, the son, and the wife (mother, seen as a dove). And there is the divine family unit.

Can't ignore 'asher' which means which/what/that. Could it be that, in grappling with ideas of a material-spiritual duality, Asherah was demoted to the material/mundane/profane and Yihoah promoted to the spiritual/holy/pure? Thank you very much. This information is factual evidence for what I have always known! Just an observation - the winged symbol at Sultis associated with Lady Asherah is described by Thoth as "God is a circle, with center everywhere and circumference, nowhere". The central disc is likened to the sun, our primary source of electromagnetic energy, however this is a partial misnomer. The disc is always red in color, which is the color of the universal life force of the universe. The disc or orb if you like is often encircled by a serpent or two serpents, hence the name "winged serpent" for the symbol. The serpents represent the nature of life, which is described by the dual currents of life and death, or the processes of destruction followed by creation, or indeed the opposite poles of negative and positive current, or the pillars of Boaz and Jakin on the Tree of Life, while the wings represent the radiation of the central life force throughout of the infinite reaches of space. The people of olden times believed they were all individual centers of the universe, which as far as I am aware, has no boundaries, or is ever expanding according to scientists.

@@enkienki2360 The human mind can't really comprehend God/dess, the Creator and Genatrix of the Universe. However the ancients, understanding this fact, envisaged Deity as within and without of all of us and all beings and not somehow separate. As we are a part of nature and the Egyptian word for God was Neter, where the word nature comes from, Thoth describes God as a circle, with no beginning and never ending. According to this idea, whereby we are really miniature reflections of God on earth, we are all centers of the universe, circles with centers everywhere and circumference nowhere.

There is a precedent - in every single ancient culture, the God was balanced by the Goddess. Most often Deity was represented as Son, Father and Sage and this Triume was always matched by Maiden, Mother and Crone... so God was always seen as Androgynous.

It had to do with a lot what happened to the body after we die but then when it came to Greece and it came to northern Africa from Egypt through the sedan through Mali And other parts I’ve ran across repeated instances of trees and their affiliations with female gods. Although there are other trees that have affiliations with male gods, take Peru and his Egyptian counterparts for example, but when it pertains to North Africa, there was the olive tree, and the sycamore tree, and the palm which all three of these trees have different patrons, and I think it was years ago before I even heard this work that I’ve already made the association with Isis and the tree and I say I said I know the Olive tree is more connected to Rara. However, when it comes to Isis is the olive tree because of the ties into Christianity and Judaism and the deep ties within the Mary. Church in Ope in America and how without them saying much it is female dominated, and it is very much about a nature worship, but more of this helps me deep in my studies more.

Proverbs 8:22 is talking about Jesus being created by God. Take a look at the following verse 23 "From time indefinite I (Jesus) was installed, from the start, from times earlier than the earth."
To be installed or created "earlier than the earth" would suggest that God was creating heavenly creatures such as angels, cherubs & seraphs. These heavenly creatures truly did come into existence before (or earlier than the earth) the earth was created & long before Adam was created.
From this point of view, Proverbs 8:22 is not referring to you or me or for that matter any other human but Jesus as a heavenly angelic son.

@@dannymathis7275 Lets consider what wisdom is. Wisdom is the ability to put knowledge to proper use. As an example, if a parent teaching their child the safe & proper way to cross the road when the child follows through on what it has been taught, it has demonstrated putting knowledge from their parent to 'proper use.' If that child has failed to obey their parent that child has lacked the ability to demonstrate wisdom.
What we need to be careful of is confusing wisdom with discernment & understand even though these 3 qualities are closely related. Wisdom is a quality that every person can obtain. Solomon is predominantly known solely as a man of abundant wisdom, he demonstrated that God-given quality when he had to decide who the real mother was over a custody battle between 2 women of the child.
Wisdom is also one of Jehovah Gods' 4 cardinal attributes. They are Love, justice, wisdom & power. When God created Adam in his image man inherited those 4 cardinal attributes thus it can truly be said man is in the likeness of his Creator.

The authors screwed up when they gave Yahweh El's consort, Asherah. "Yahweh and his Asherah" became a houshold word. - 22:22 It's remarkable the amount of disconnect and contradiction present here; he affirms that all this was described in the Bible, but then tries to insist that it somehow contradicts what the Bible is saying, that there was no idolatry and paganism, when the Bible clearly says that there was!
    - 22:26 I should repeat what I've said in part 1, that the Documentary Hypothesis is well on it's way out the door, and European scholars no longer use it.
    - 22:40 Funny how these cults are condemned in Scripture, it's almost as if this archeology is actually proving rather than disproving what the Bible says.
    - 22:45 Only kings could stamp-out these cults because it was only when the kings believed the True Faith that they got rid of these cults, otherwise the kings were pagan just like everyone else as the Bible states and this archeology shows, and were actually persecuting this so-called "elite."
    - 22:50 No, I don't see no disconnect at all, this is all confirming exactly what the Bible says; frankly what kind of Bible are you reading??
    - 24:25 Oh wow! This might be the dumbest thing said in this entire video! The clinging to the horns of an altar was a ritual and symbolic practice, not so that the authorities couldn't pick you up and carry you way. Good grief!
    - 25:21 Like I said in part 1 Michas' Idol was adored (Adoration being that Catholic term for latria) at Dan, as the Bible claims.
    - 25:57 Yes we should because the Bible says that such things took place.
    - 26:11 Yeah, and this archeological evidence shows why.
    - 26:21 Yes it is the reality, the Northern Kingdom practiced idolatry and paganism, and this archeological evidence proves it.
    - 27:30 This is a Pharisiaco-Protestant misunderstanding of the prohibition against graven images, images and depictions were allowed as long as they weren't idolatrous. Also I'm not sure if he'll get to this, but notice that part of the image that's supposed to present YHWH contains no image at all.
I need to go do my daily meditations now so I'll just leave it here. All I'm seeing is confirmation of what the Old Testament account says, and claims that this somehow contradicts the Old Testament account when just the opposite is true.

Okay, with the help of the Lord's Grace and the intercession of the Gebirah Ha-Shamayim, I'm ready to take a look at this and critique this video point-by-point and see how much of it is reasonable, and how much is tainted by an Anti-Biblical bias. let's take a look:
    - 17:10 I look forward to seeing you prove that point.
    - 17:16 I look forward to seeing you prove that too, especially consider how much the Human Spouse of His Holy Spirit, the Immaculately Conceived New Even, owns by being Spiritually married to Him.
    - 17:19 He has His own Kingdom, the Saints who were Faithful to Him, and the greatest civilization in all of history, Christian Civilization; which may be lying dormant beneath our feet now, but will rise again, just as God the Son did. Also as I alluded to earlier, He has Mary, the Immaculately Conceived New Eve, the Greatest Creation in all of reality, that alone I imagine would satisfy Him even if He had nothing else, I know it would me. I know he's sort of joking when he says all this, but it's still worth saying all this in response.
    - 17:24 Folk Religion is sort of a grey area, I'm not sure how one hopes to get an objective finding out of something like that; a lot of Hispanics (Or as I like to call my people La Raza de Santiago) venerate Santa Muerte, but that doesn't mean that Santa Muerte is a real Saint, or someone that the Catholic Faith holds up as real and worthy of veneration.
    - 17:31 It's a false dichotomy because as I've just said, Folk Religion is a grey area, Folk Religion is neither all-false or all-true, some it is false, like Santa Muerte as I've mentioned above, but a lot of other things are in perfect accord with the Judeo-Christian or Biblical Faith. Heck, I myself am a big fan of Folk Religion and want to take up some practices of my ancestors' Folk Religion when I - Please God! - move back onto my family's farm down in Chile.
    - 17:39 "Reconstructing" What does that mean? A lot of this desire to "reconstruct" Biblical practices actually comes from Protestantism, indeed, the vast majority of accusations that Christian beliefs and practices stem from paganism, ultimately have their origin in Protestant propaganda.
    - 18:18 "Elites" I don't like the subtle implications behind that term.
    - 18:20 "Attached to the court and temple in Jerusalem.." Lol! Jeremiah was clearly a member of that group, look at how well he got along with them!
    - 18:24 Well that's true in the sense that I myself don't at all represent a majority of Catholics, I actually believe what the Faith always has, and always will teach. But just because one is not of the majority opinion on something doesn't mean that said person is false on said opinion; throughout history, the majority of people thought that the earth was flat.
    - 18:28 🙄I'm not even going to dignify that with a response.
    - 18:29 After thinking about it for a bit, I've decided I will say this, it's awfully sexist of you to think that if the writing of Sacred Scripture were placed in the hands of women, they would pervert the objective Truths of Divine Revelation.
    - 18:36 Yeah, when I think of an idealistic view of Israelite Religion, I think of the dumpster fire that was the Divided Monarchy of Israel and Judah!
-18:41 Oh goody, our first contradiction, the Bible was written by "elites attached to the court and Temple," but they never were "in charge!" They were elites only they weren't!
    - 18:50 And that's pretty much what this all is, a conspiracy theory, a bunch of sneaky people came in and re-wrote history.
    - 18:59 Does it, or are we taking the archeological evidence we've found and viewing and interpreting it through our own assumptions that were just stated in this video?
    - 19:11 It should be worth pointing out that the Documentary Hypothesis is well on it's way out, scholars in Europe no longer use it.
    - 19:13 Hence why Sola Scriptura is false.
    - 19:25 I should also add that this historian himself is already reading more into the Bible than there is there, just like a Protestant practicing Sola Scriptura!
    - 19:27 Some of which contradict and almost certainly will continue to contradict modern secularist beliefs and assumptions about Ancient Israel and the Bible that we have now. I know the arguments that "well in the future we'll find and discover something that'll disprove your belief" isn't the strongest argument, I myself have to deal with these arguments in both my religious and socio-cultural beliefs and commitments, but it's still worth pointing-out I think.
    - 19:36 We already know from the Bible what most people were doing, practicing idolatry.
    - 19:46 Like I said before, just because the majority of Ancient Israelites practiced paganism, doesn't mean that paganism is the "true religion of Ancient Israel," just as the fact that the majority of Catholics reject the Real Presence, practice contraception, blasphemy, religious indifferentism ect. doesn't mean that these are the real beliefs and practices of the Catholic Faith.
    - 19:54 I will, I think the preferable one is the one that'll lead you to Eternity with the Triune God of Israel, and not away from Him and to Eternity with the demonic false gods the Israelites were worshipping.
    - 19:55 "Which is legitimate," yeah, everything you've said thus far heavily implies that you think the legitimate one is one the where "God [sic] had a wife." Heck, you just quoted your colleague referring to that as the "true religion of Ancient Israel!"
    - 21:02 I should point-out that the Bible says that Michas' idol was adored (to use the Catholic term for latria) at Dan.
    - 21:55 They're not "always condemned," they were considered acceptable at one point and then no longer acceptable after that, this frankly is reading contradictions into Scripture where there aren't any.
    - 22:00 Dan was at the border and thus heavily influenced by the surrounding pagan nations, and considering that the Northern Kingdom was the most idolatrous and pagan, it's actually no surprise that it became the "cultural capital." I highly suspect that the most pagan and idolatrous findings we'll see on this journey come from the north.
    - 22:11 Really? The High Places? The Bible clearly states that the High Places were present in Israel all the way to the Babylonian Exile, and on top of that there was brief period where the High Places were tolerated, namely after the destruction of the Tabernacle and before the building of the Temple, the prophet Samuel participated in sacrifices at a High Place. Also in the latter times of the Kingdom of Judah, only the God of Israel was adored at the High Places, no other pagan gods.
I got to go have lunch now, I'll do part to later, so far it seems like all this presentation is doing proving what the Bible says while thinking that this is doing the opposite, it's going to be interesting to see what is said about Asherah.

How God going to have hisself. Mary was a demon. God is a spirit not flesh and blood. God don't want flesh and blood. Then he will be defiling his self. God is pure spirit. Jeremiah chapters 1-3

God never chose the Jewish people for anything. I challenge anyone here to prove it.

The Bible talks over and over again about the Israelites rebelling and disobeying God over and over again! Be honest about the text. This is not surprising that they disobeyed God. So you are confirming the Bible!
