    Here is another trivia:
Evrything in the movie being rushed meant VFX artists had to work around the clock for months in order to deliver the shots in the short deadline. It was done basically as a favor but after that many productions asked to have the "War of the World" treatment and the work conditions in VFX started deteriorating with shorter delays and still asking for higher quality. So many brun outs were caused by the special treatment this movie received.

    • @TheViolalove

It’s still better than Cats, the movie, at almost 20 years old.

    • @djyanno
      @djyanno Před 3 měsíci +4

@@TheViolalove I don't think your answer is related at all to my post. Though I agree that the VFX are better than Cats. However, I have no idea of the details behind the Cats production. A little clue to what the problem may be: sometimes the same team that win the Oscars also get blamed for bad VFX on another movie. Maybe unrealistic deadlines, production not taking look decision on time, bad shooting.... Just to let you the condictions VFX artists work under: a supervidor once said back around 2007 "If I don't cause a VFX shop to close during a production, I did not do my job." I don't judge a VFX team unless I know all the parameters artists had to work under.

How the people are disintegrated into dust is definitely better than showing gore and scarier, I think the wailing sound made by the alien machines adds an extra chill to that effect also. And the unnerving way the people act in fear of their lives trying to drag Ray and his kids from the car really shows human nature in its true form. As a fan of the original which I first saw back in the mid 60s which is the better film? The 2005 version is the most realistic of the two but both are equally entertaining. Great video Minty, keep em coming.

    Fun Fact:
In the 2005 remake of *"War of The*
    *Worlds",* Steven Spielberg actually
reunited with one of his actors
    from the 1975 summer blockbuster:
    *"JAWS".* That actor was Jonathan
Filley, who played Tom Cassidy, the
    drunk boyfriend of Chrissie Watkins
    aka the First Shark Victim.
    Jonathan, however, never worked as
an actor in another film since *"JAWS",*
and he worked in *"WOTW '05"* as the Unit Production Manager (New York).
    Other credits for him include
working as a Location Manager in films such as *"Tootsie"* (1982) and *"Regarding Henry"* (1991) just to name a few, and he also worked in many
other films as a producer, co-producer, and executive producer.

#6 is incorrect. The ships were buried underground and the lightning bolts transferred the aliens into them. The news reporter shows a clip to Tom Cruise during the plane crash scene.

Channing Tatum in this movie is not a “cameo” as he wasn’t famous at that time. He was just an actor early in his career playing an extra. He would have to already be famous for that little thing to be considered a cameo.

Thanks for another very interesting and engaging video, Minty. I really had a problem with the Martian war machines being previously buried underground. Additionally, the electrical bolts were apparently meant to be the Martians themselves being transferred down to their vehicles. This raises so many questions that it undermines the intentional grittier, lower key approach of the rest of the movie.

Pointing out the 12 minute issue is smart, it will make people mindful but I have to wonder what is causing it? Are you perhaps not increasing the tension between each item enough? Are 10 facts just too many and people get bored after 7? Perhaps you should try a format change and split the videos in 2, 6 things you didn't know... 6 more things you didn't know.

    • @Cyril29a
      @Cyril29a Před 3 měsíci

@Arcane_Cypher That is a good point. I do that too since usually those are not great facts. Perhaps the issue is Minty is too verbose for the TrickTok generation

The Martians weren’t buried, the machines were. The Martians came in on those bolts of lightning in capsules. This was even said in the movie by the reporter character who caught it on tape. She showed Ray this in slow motion.

I live 10 minutes away from the sight where they shot the first appearance of the aliens on Ferry Street, Newark, New Jersey. I used to go there every week to eat at good restaurants they had around the area, this particular day we get there and the whole block is closed, we asked around what’s happening, they told us Tom Cruise was shooting a movie there, we decided to stick around a bit since so many people were, after 20 minutes, we see Tom Cruise running around, after that we left and looked forward to go see the movie in theater. Loved it, and to this day every time I go to Newark and pass that church I remember that day. Another fun fact is that, my high school friend’s neighbor had a dental office right in at a location they needed to close for the movie, he was offered money to close his business during shooting, he declined and asked to have a silent part at any point in the movie, his request was granted and he is one of the extra with a two second clear shot side by side with Tom Cruise.
    Love the channel mate!

I, for one, always watch your videos to the end.
I loved Spielberg's version of War of the Worlds. The personal story about fatherhood did indeed add that personal, character-driven aspect of the film and it made a huge difference for the better. There were some VFX shots that were genuinely frightening because so many of them were shot/created from the 1st-person POV. It's hard for a film to really get in my gut like this one did, I've seen too many of them (and loved them all), plus having worked in the world of filmmaking, VFX and CGI for many years now, I know how the tricks are done and can spot them immediately.

Yes, Minty, this movie is very much about family, most specifically about the important role of the father.
The Gene Barry version was about individual nations, focusing on the U.S.
This 1950s version also focused on religion and the importance of faith.
It's interesting that these three subjects - fathers, faith, and country have been pretty much erased from modern entertainment in a mear 20 years.
    Sad....

I was 14, when this movie came out, and I loved every second of it. My then-school's principal arranged for it to be screened at an event called "a lock-in", basically a pajama party on steroids. While I had a great time, it really freaked out one of my friends. She had an anxiety disorder, and the special effects gave her a huge panic-attack. She left the movie early. (5/4/2024)

There's one scene in this WOTW 2005 that I found chilling at the time and always sticks in my mind, its when they are looking down on the massive group of people over the hill, tripods in toe opening fire like on running insects, you hear the distant screams of the masses. Replace the tripod with something else and feel like that probably happened in real war, haunting!

I really enjoyed this film when it came out. I found the sound that alien's vehicles/ships to be one of most terrifying features. Like some kind of guttural horn of impending doom. And, I agree with Minty of people just being evaporated into literal dust was wayyyy more scary than any blood, guts and gore. That scene where Tom is absolutely covered in the human dust particles was horrifying.
Yeahhh, Tom did seem pretty inhinged during this time period. The couch jumping incident and some really aggressive and bizarre interviews were floating around. I absolutely think his peculiar behavior hurt the film.
As always, Minty! Great video!! ❤

I like your longer videos! As far as War of the Worlds, I do think the couch jumping led to a low point in Cruise’s popularity. And a lot of people just shrug this film off as yet another reboot. If it had came out 10 years earlier, I think it would be better remembered.

I remember watching this movie on dvd,it was released on dvd in November and I remember most of the guys in the unit buying it from the local shoppette ( a military store on TQ that sells things like a Wallmart ) LOL. A very good movie.loved it. Big fan of both Cruise and Spielberg. GREAT job on the video as usual Minty. God bless.

I read the book and still liked the movie. Decision to move the plot in the modern world instead of ending of 19 century didn't hurt, the only scene from the book I missed was a dreadnought attack on one of the tripods, wish they made a scene with an Arleigh Burke destroyer attempting to destroy a tripod in the movie. Decision to scrap the cylinders from Mars and make aliens come out from underground was perfect for a horror-type movie. Besides, after movies like Independance Day (which is still good and I rewatch it sometimes) seeing something as dark as War of the Worlds was really refreshing, new, scary in a fun way. The fact it was done in such a rush make it even more astonishing. WotW is one of my fav movies. And I also like Spielberg and Cruise, they're always try their best to deliver a cool movie. :)
