  • Ken Caminiti blended brute power and acrobatic defense in his four seasons with the Padres. He was the first player in franchise history to win the National League MVP award, the unanimous choice in 1996 after batting .326/.408/.621 with 40 home runs and 130 RBI. A Silver Slugger, two-time San Diego All-Star and Gold Glover in three straight seasons (1995-97), Caminiti was posthumously inducted into the Padres Hall of Fame in 2016.

@@josemurillo6378. We would always watch the games on tv. In Spanish. But I did get to go to a game for a school trip, with a school In Chula Vista. Vista square.

Caminiti came into my families restaurant in Escondido California for breakfast once. I wasn't born at the time but they said he was a hulk of a man and very nice/humble. Wish I got to see him play in his prime. Let's hope the Pads get their bats heated up and get back to winning. LETS GO SD!

The other day I saw a dude on a corner wearing a Caminiti jersey. I screamed out my car "Nice jersey" or "I love your jersey" something like that. And then the Padres come out with this highlights video. What a coincidence! I loved going to games in late 90s as a kid. It was a great time.

Being an Astro fan at the time , I was sick to my stomach when we traded him to SD in that 5 or 6 player trade ...however IMO he had his best years w/ SD. Underrated 3rd Baseman for sure !!! No one in the game today has his arm strength . RIP Ken.

I loved Hoffman and Gwynn but Caminiti was, and still is, my guy. As troubled as he was he shown bright for the short time he was with us. And as trivial as it is, he will always have one of the greatest defensive plays in MLB history, throwing out the runner at first from his ass, and be remembered in the pantheon of amazing plays for that.

In no way am I suggesting Machado juices, but we have not had a 3rd baseman with this power and defensive skills since Caminiti. Manny is an absolute beast, but I think they have been using more HR-friendly balls the last few years. There are fewer second-deckers so far this season with the new ball. I would pay money to hear Don Orsillo call some of Caminiti's plays.
