- The Russian folk song "Kalinka" (or "Kalinka-malinka") performed by Yevgeny Belyaev (tenor) and the Alexandrov Red Army Choir.
Conductor - Boris Alexandrov
This song was considered to be a Russian folk song for quite a long time. In fact, the song lyrics and music were written in 1860 by the composer, writer and folklorist Ivan Petrovich Larionov and the song was first performed on an amateur stage in Saratov in a play for which he wrote the music. And soon at the request of the famous singer and creator of the folk song choir Agrenev-Slavyansky, Larionov put this song into the choir's repertoire. So the popularity of the "Kalinka" song began with the Slavyansky Choir.
The song gained world fame in the arrangement of the composer and conductor, the People's Artist of the USSR, Professor Alexander Vasilyevich Aleksandrov (1883-1946). And since that time and up till now the song was widely performed abroad by the Alexandrov Red Army Ensemble.

Fantastic, unbelievable and memorable beautiful! Sounds so much better in Russia, in their home country, than when they sang it in my home country, which is Austria We were then occupied by Russians, American, French and English! Thanks to Russia, they gave us FREEDOM again in 1955. Was only a small kid, nevertheless, I couldn't complain. Had a Russian Major living above us in different floor, same Villa. Whenever he saw me, I got a candy from him. Will never forget this act of kindness. Talk about the years 1949 till 1951, than we moved. Lived opposite a Music House were Russian were practicing all day! That's the reason I know many songs from them. Spassiva Ruskis.. (Sorry, don't know Russian)

You can tell how he and the rest of the choir really do convey emotion when they sing and play, which is something I truly admire and love. I wish some of the popular and more modern musicians could take some notes from the old boys, they could really learn a thing or two I believe.
I miss the Red Army choir, surely one of the best worldwide. And the Russian music... so romantic, powerful, heart-breaking...

Whenever I heard Yevgeny sing Kalinka I always thought what a wonderful woman Kalinka must be as he is so happy to be in her arms. I loved hearing this choir as a child in the 70's and 80's in the UK . They would sometimes come and do shows. So sad politics gets in the way and we no longer hear these great voices.
Калинка ,это куст калины-ягоды,очень красивой,цвета рубин,горьковатой на вкус,но после мороза-сладкой .Малинка,тоже ягода малина ,малинового цвета,но очень сладкая.Очевидно,такое сочетание- горького и сладкого,похожего на нашу жизнь и заставило композитора написать такую весёлую песню.Я,живу в Брянске,в ста тридцати км от г.Клинцы,где родился и жил певец,солист хора имени Пятницкого- Народный артист СССР, Евгений Беляев ,там ему поставлен памятник. Я,хочу,чтобы мы не забывали этого всемирно-известного певца.Раньше,концерты памяти о Е.Беляеве,организовывал ,в Брянске- заслуженный работник культуры РФ, Геваргис Бит- Юнан.Но,его не стало.И,проводить эти концерты памяти перестали.Неужели армия работников культуры г. Russia has always given me so many wonderful things. I cannot explain why and how. I am Bolivian but our cultures are so similar. So emotional, so intense, so open hearted. So much of Russian culture makes me feel like home, especially living in Western Europe and missing so much my warm hearted country and people. Only russians made me feel like having an open heart is not bad.
This song is only one of the thousand things about Russia that give so much warmth to my heart. Whoever said russians are cold is dead wrong. I swear one day I will visit Moscow.

Although we made friends quite fast and met some genuinely friendly people. Bolivia and Russia were the best trips of our lives for me and my husband. We felt like home. We miss it already :(
But yes, Russian dances are incredible, the level of dance there is so high, SO HIGH. As a professional dancer myself I can say that it is not a coincidence that the best ballerinas of the world are russian. I think latinos have the same passion and musicality but we lack the education and we lack intellect in our dance, like methodology, discipline, body awarenesss etc. Dance education in Russia is the best in the world. I cannot explain it here without sounding too political to the jealous Westerners hahaha, Westerners get very jealous when people say good things about Russia haha. But as a latina, who is a dancer, I am extremely grateful for russian ballet. It brought me more than movement. It made me the person that I am today. I still love and adore my Bolivian dances, and one day I will show them to the Russians, I am sure it will be a great cultural exchange.

Such an amazing version of an incredible song. Sung by one of the greatest tenors ever - Evgeny Belyaev. A real shame we didn't get to hear more of this man's interpretations of songs during his prime - right smack dab in the middle of the Cold War. Sadly, he passed away more than 20 years ago. Thank goodness CZcams's providing the recognition he so deserves. Thank you for uploading this.

I remember them playing at the Liverpool Empire in the late fifties or early sixties. They brought the house down; in fact it was a sell out tour The soloist, Yevgeny Belyaev, took everyone's breath away. They surprised us too with renditions of English and Irish folk songs such as 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary. Rousing stuff. I still have the programme somewhere around the house. One thing I do remember above all: they weren't seen as 'the enemy' then.

Hello from Finland. The Alexandrov Ensemble have been important cultural ambassadors for the Soviet Union and Russia. I own a couple of their albums with Russian folk songs. I have not had the fortune to see them perform live - yet. Since I was a little kid, I have had a fascination with Russia and its culture and language, and the starting point for this was the manned space program. As only two countries in the world sent people into space, I was kind of proud to live next to one of them - and I have been able to meet one of the cosmonauts as well.
