    At the age of 90 Frank has no problem expressing his opinions about the game he has a real passion for. He clearly pointed out in this interview with Howie the struggles players had in his era trying to get raises. The Marc Throneberry story about the base running debacle is legendary. When Stengel found out that Marv hadn’t touched first or second base on his way to a triple he remarked “I know he touched third base because he’s over there standing on it!” I never get tired of hearing stories about the 1962 Mets.

      @alanmerritts Před 3 lety +3

      YES! After causing undue trouble to Dick, he got traded! I have been upset for years about Allen not being in the Hall of Fame. Unfortunately, he will make it in December of next year after he is gone like it was for Ron Santo.

    • @RRaquello
      @RRaquello Před rokem

      @@alanmerritts Dick Allen was no angel. I'm a White Sox fan and remember him quitting on the team and just walking away in the middle of the season. That was with a manager (Chuck Tanner) who had special rules for him and catered to his every whim. He's always portrayed as this poor innocent babe being picked on by evil bad guys like Frank Thomas, but in my book, as great as he was as a player, he wasn't a guy you wanted on your team.

    I realize this is intended as a Mets promotional video, intended to show Frank Thomas in a good light, but it's annoying and in my view, unprofessional to not ask him about the fight he intentionally picked with Richie Allen during Thomas's time with the Phillies. It was just one brief fight, but it damaged Allen's career, the Phillies' future, and Thomas's own career as well.

    • @craigsped
      @craigsped Před 3 lety

      Richie Allen and the other Phillies were threatened with a fine if they spoke to the press about the incident. Thomas after being released was able to tell his side without fear of contradiction. Phillies who were present and witnessed the incident said later that Thomas provoked Allen, calling him “boy.”
      Don’t know how true it is, but I’ve read that they eventually became friends who respected each other’s abilities.

      @@HelloooThere Racial battles of late 60's and early 70's were not "nice". Is that your cancel culture showing a little there? Read about what Allen went thru in Philly, that batting helmet in the field was not a fashion statement. Jim Kaat says Thomas hit Allen with bat after Allen told him to stop calling him "boy", and the brawl was on.

  • @mycorner4271
    @mycorner4271 Před 3 lety +8

    Why did he tarnish his record by turning face on Richie "Dick"Allen? Couldn't handle your business like Allen did with his bare fists? Why did you have to take it to the streets or didn't think you could kick his ass in a fair manor? I'm not taking his side because Dick is no longer with us, but Frank who were you to needle him? He was by far a way better star and feared hitter than you sir.

      The story according to ex Phillie, Johnny Callison....the night before, Thomas tried a sacrifice bunt and failed miserably...the next day, Callison and Richie Allen were behind the Batting Cage while Thomas was taking his swings...Callison was needling Thomas about the missed bunt and called him, “Big Donkey”....but Thomas thought that Allen was the instigator...called Richie, “Boy”, and that prompted Allen to confront Thomas...who hit him with the bat, bruising Richie’s shoulder...Gene Mauch became enraged and cut Thomas the next day...but he told Callison and Allen NOT to say anything to the Press...but Thomas told the media it was Allen’s fault...and the rest us history
