Gorgon's Grotto đ± MASSIVE 48x60 canvas! Multiple StraightPours in only 4 colors! Amazing cells!

- Hello Friends! I love the way this Gigantic canvas came out! This is the biggest canvas I have poured on so far, it was so much fun! I painted my corners and edges Black before I started so I wouldn't have to worry about them.
I used 4 colors:
DecoArt Americana Decor 24K
DecoArt Americana Decor Emerald Green
DecoArt Americana Classic Black
Arteza Phthalo Blue
My pouring medium was Liquitex Pouring Medium, a little water and then Floetrol.
There is NO SILICONE in my paints. I am doing multiple straight pours onto this huge canvas, so I'm keeping my paint thin, and my basecoat a bit thinner than my other paints.
In a straight pour the paint is poured from up high onto the canvas, and it churns and mixes the paint, creating lots of bubbles. When you torch the bubbles you get cells.. very cool stuff! I'm a bit obsessed with straight pours at the moment lol..
My pouring cup was not carefully layered, it was a Dirty Cup (meaning the paint is poured from up high into the center of the pouring cup, into the color beneath it). I think one reason the cells stayed so nice in this piece is that it took me a while to pour all the straight pours, so the cells had time to develop on their own before I tilted anything. I also stretched the paint all the way down to the other end of the canvas so there was not a lot of paint left on there for them to spread out on, and they stayed put.
I love all the little cells along the sides, that beautiful curve brings movement and flow into the painting and gives the illusion of water moving. There is a section that has hundreds of tiny blue and green cells against a black background that makes my heart very happy đ„°
I'm very happy with how this turned out, I think because I just tilted it to cover the corners and then tilted it to encourage the cells on the sides. I didn't try to change the composition once the cells started. I think I had almost the perfect amount of paint on there, I still had to stretch to get to the edges, but that opened up all these beautiful areas on the sides so you can see what's hiding in there. There is Magic in straight pours! đ«
My husband and I tested out using multiple cameras and a microphone for this pour, because the canvas was so big. I was also pouring outside, under a pergola, and at one point the sun shifted and created a shadow on the canvas..so I was very happy we had another angle to show you with no shadows. There were a few different cameras shooting this time.. but I dont think we will do that again with that many cameras, maybe just a couple (it made editing very complicated).. I'm not crazy about the microphone but I did want you guys to be able to hear what I was saying. Forgive any heavy breathing you hear, that canvas was a full body workout LOL! Heavy when fully loaded with 144 ounces of paint (9 sixteen ounce cups!)
I've titled this piece 'Gorgon's Grotto' because it reminds me of a deep underwater cave.. Gorgon's Grotto is also the name of one of my favorite succulents, Echeveria Gorgon's Grotto. That name has always conjured images of shadowy depths and a cave guarded by a Genie.. đ±
I hope you all enjoyed watching this, and I hope you all try a big huge canvas, they can be a lot of fun if you plan it correctly. You might want to have someone help you tilt it tho đ

Hello Beautiful People!
I watched this video again yesterday and I wanted to apologize for the audio, there are a lot of noises and sounds that dont belong. In the last 6 weeks we have learned so much and invested in better audio equipment and my newer videos are much better in terms of what you hear. We are definitely a work in progress!
I was thinking of doing this pour again and filming it.. what do you guys think? Would you watch to see if I could do it again? (Now that I dont have a cold lol)
Let me know what you think đ„°
Mina, what youâve been doing is good... no body is perfect, you learn as you go... right??
Gorgeous piece. Canât wait to see your next video!
I read your apology before watching, and was wondering how bad it was going to sound. Sure there are five big sniffles that Iâd have âducked outâ in the audio track. But on the other hand, we can *hear* how heavy the paint gets on such a big canvas. Someone else has the painting now, but I heard the artistâs energy giving life to the piece.
Keeper!
...And this sound engineer is a subscriber after one vid. Be Seeing You!
@@sminstudios thank you so much! I appreciate your input, and your comment. Thanks for watching and hanging out with me đ„°
Apologies not necessary. Beautiful art!
Fantastic, WOW, don't know how you can lift that back and fourth. The colours are amazing. Well done
Wow!!!!! I'm blown away by this. This is truly something special, and not many artists have the space or strength to work on such a luxuriously large canvas, so it was a treat to watch!!! I loved all the different camera angles and the editing was seamless to the viewer - which I KNOW was a ton of work! It was beautiful to see you in camera pretty lady. â€ïž Your personality shines through on screen and in your work. You are a bright and shining star and you are going to SOAR!!!! đ€©đ€©đ€©đ€©
My sweet friend.. thank you so much! đ„° thanks for being part of my journey, I can't tell you how much your encouragement and support mean.. you're amazing Heather! â€â€â€

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! đ„°
Absolutely gorgeous! Love the colors!
Awesome! I do enjoy your art and your laughter!
An idea instead of push pins, try large metal hooks. The 10 hacks for pouring video, she also uses the hooks to level the painting, by twisting in or out screws. Love the painting đ
Omg Mina!! I freaking love this! I canât wait to pour on my large canvas...Iâve been afraid of it but I think you gave me courage lol...although I have no way of getting it back into the house after I would pour it outside lmao
Thank you so much Sarah!! I'm so glad you like it! I think you will like pouring on the big ones, go for it!! I cant wait to see! đ„°â€
Yes once I get my tent up I will! I do prefer to pour on the larger sized canvases... I have a 3x4 just staring at me lol not enough room to really tilt it between the chandelier and dining room table đđ€Ł so Iâm gonna do it soon! My studio isnât ready yet đą
I totally hear you! I did one other canvas a bit smaller than this but I didn't really leave myself room for the paint to run off and be able to walk around it. Stepping in that paint broke my concentration and I ended up mixing and pouring a whole new batch of paint to fix it. Plan ahead! And stretch it out a lot lol! Yours is going to be amazing â€
Wish we lived closer! Lol you are one hot ticket! You seem very fun and free spirited! We could pour for hours lol
Loved watching you enjoying what you were doing and hearing you laugh.
Love how it looks like the ocean !! Stunning đâŁïž
I am so amazed by the beauty of your pours. But I have to ask since you work outside how do you keep things from blowing into your art? I couldnât even imagine working outside there would be stuff in my paint within seconds. Pollen, twigs, leaves it would be a disaster. Also do you live in California or Florida? Because your weather is so beautiful! Iâm asking because Iâm wondering what do you do in the winter? Itâs my dream to paint outside, but I donât know how I would manage it with all the heat, humidity, and inchworms! Lol â€ïž from Long Island, NY
Hi Marcy! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I am in Southern California, we are very blessed with good weather, it has just decided to be summer a couple of weeks ago here.. before that it was actually cool and cloudy for a couple of months (which was actually very easy to paint outside in).. the direct sun recently has taught me to have everything ready to go because it won't wait, it will start to dry on the edges very fast. The wind and I have made friends đ I'm convinced she wants to pour paint, she always starts blowing fiercely when I pick up my cup haha.. not much detritus flies into the paintings, but I do get moths that land in them in the middle of the night sometimes. I think they don't really like the smell of the paint maybe? I do bring anything that I paint inside to dry, I do not leave them outdoors to dry. I have a TuffShed in my garden, that is where I mix and have my supplies and leave things to dry. Then I usually bring them up to the house once they are dry (my daughters call that room the Art Gallery hahaha). I hope you have a lovely day â€đđ±đ«
These would certainly keep a person in shape. Beautiful
So amazing!!!!
Holy moly that's gorgeous!!!! Very impressive! Commission piece? How do you know what to price your work at? Absolutely beautiful â€ïž
Hi Joan! Thank you so much! This was not a commission, I had seen this size canvas at the art supply store, and really wanted it but didn't like the price very much.. then they had a 70% off sale and I went and got it đ I was floating on cloud 9, so I was really happy to pour it. I'm very happy it came out the way it did. Lots of great moments with this piece for me, how things lined up and worked.
There are charts that give you an idea per inch what to charge.. take into account your time thinking about it plus materials plus pouring medium and test pieces.. I hope that helps. Have a wonderful day! đ„°
Joan Bentivegna here is a great article about pricing I enjoyed and thatâs super encouraging âșïž www.theartleague.org/blog/2016/05/20/price-artwork-beginners-guide/
