Welcome to GI 40, a very special issue that we've been hoping to bring you... well, since we first planned the magazine!
Brian May is a unique figure in Rock guitar and he has been interviewed on many occasions in many different publications, so when we were finally able to arrange an interview with him, we decided to take a different route. Instead of sending a mere journalist to interview him and his highly regarded tech expert, Pete Malandrone, we sent Jamie Humphries, who as our features explain has a unique inside approach to the Brian May team. We like to think we've produced the definitive Brian May special as a result.
Also on board is Zakk Wylde, making a welcome return to GI, telling us why he's going into the guitars and amps business!
Don't forget the usual abundance of reviews, columns and this issue's stonking competition opportunity to win a complete set of Moog's Minifooger pedals - in our estimation some of the finest effects pedals money can buy!

Everybody deserves to be this enthusiastic about something in their life.
ill agree with that.
us musicians always are!!
nobody deserves anything
instaBlaster
Might just be the coolest guy in rock.
Always enjoy listening to Paul Gilbert talking about gear and stuff. Always upbeat
Love his childlike enthusiasm and a great player
Just realized.the longer Paul is on camera, the longer he geeks out. And it's great. From when he was at GIT to now.
Of all the famous guitar players in the world I want to be friends with Paul is on the number one spot.
He's the most humble rock star ever, I met him at a clinic in Portugal years ago, I would also like to be his friend.
Paul Gilbert, what a great first name!! He is one the the nicest most generous dudes you will ever meet. Very giving and zero ego or attitude. What a genuine human being. Loved playing for you and with you, I learned so much because you are a giving, kind teacher who applies no pressure, Thank You!!How many of those peddles did they just send to you or did you buy all of them and I love the pedalboard 3000!!!! Also you're teaching your boy right, you gotta know where music came from so you can take it where it needs to go!!!Peace, Love & Ice Cream Bro!!!
2:42 A _spare_ MXR Phase 90, just in case. A Phase 100...never know when you...*_want 10 more_*
I love Paul. What a cool and talented human he is.
i just fucking love this guy
I like his "almost anything goes" attitude, especially towards the gear he uses. "Here's a drawer full of non-disciminating products." - "I got these because I like the knobs." - "I just got some stickers for inlays." - Just a very free and playful spirit this man. - Like I keep saying; He's like a child who can tell stories like a grandfather.
Paul Gilbert is like the Bill Nye of guitar.
what an indictment. for one thing paul actually has a working knowledge of his field of expertise.
he is like a professor of guitar and a very cool humble man
Wow, he's a sick guitar player and a great father. Wow. I'm impressed.
This is my favourite video on youtube . awesome stuff !
I love how loyal he is to Ibanez. I bet ya Paul’s a great dude to be friends with.
As a 22 year disciple of Gilbert from the Intense Rock days I'll go and watch these DVDs!!
Thank you, GI, loved the series!
If I had a studio, it would look *exactly* like this.
Really enjoyed this video , Thank you for uploading all these Paul Gilbert videos !
Paul Gilbert - the guitarist who literally always makes you smile
PAUL GILBERT IS THE MAN, I LEARNED SO MUCH FROM HIS VIDEOS AND DVD'S BACK IN THE DAY. HIS PEDAL BOARD IS PERFECT.
This guys free spirit inspires me all day!! Paul is the man
God thank you for this! Moar!
Damn the world would be a darker place without this man. That tone of energy and passion in hes voice is amazing👌 still is a huge inspiration for musicians these days I absolutely love him😁
What a Great series of videos!
+Umberto Ronco Thanks Umberto
Love Paul -- and just before he said "you never know when you might need 10 more", I too had a Nigel-moment and thought the exact same thing. Rock 'n Roll!
Finally, I'm similar to Paul Gilbert. By that I mean, I too, have a plastic container full of pedals and cables. That's about where the similarity ends. ;) GREAT VIDEO!
thank you for this interview
thank you sooooo much for sharing this! Just to hang out in that room talking shop is a bucket list item for me. For now, I can enjoy it through your experience you lucky dog!
Paul is just an amazing Guitarist, they really don't come any better.I feel so much better after watching this,Cause my Studio is the about the same cluster of stuff everywhere, almost finished with my new studio and can start recording. I am deaf too Paul, at least the fingers still work.
I’ve met Paul at Guitar center When he did a seminar back about 8 year ago or so, my Friend Eric Turner from Darrel Mansfield band said Paul came out and did a cameo on Darrel Mansfield CD in the 80s!!
Very nice. Thanks for this video.
Amazing stuff!
The Mad Scientist of guitar that just happens to be a hoarder. Paul is a sweetheart of a guy, and the baddest of the bad!
I met him in the 80's at a clinic. In his down time he went shopping for drum machines. Loves his toys for the studio! He was a little shy, but still took the time to chat. I have many of the same pedals. ie DOD Yngwie pedal. He actual uses/prefers the 1st grey version. This video cracked me up.
Mucho respecto!
Love this stuff! He has so much stuff and it's a wonder he finds anything in there. Love those Yamaha THR amps as well, incredible practice amps for playing at home.
I love all the Spinal Tap references.
you mean Spinal Tape xD
This video along with the 4 part interview are the best things I have seen since I can remember. Only bad thing about them is I finished watching them and want more.
I've played guitar for 47 years now. When my eldest son wanted to take up music (seriously) about age 13 I encouraged him to be a bass player. He originally wanted guitar like me. I convinced him, as a bassist, he will always be in demand. My words have turned out to be rather prophetic. In trying to assemble the various iterations of bands through the years (about 10 years, he is 25) there has been 1 drummer, 1 bassist (him) and about 22 guitarists of various abilities. Dad was right. They just dropped their 2nd album all self produced and looking for more. Check out Gladiators, album is "Plexus". Thank you in advance Paul. I didn't mean this to be an advertisement. You got me thinking of your son learning the good stuff. I made sure my son learned lots from Aerosmith to ZZTop with the crowning achievement being Rush's Moving Pictures. He's also picked up on some classical stuff as well. Thanks again. Book a show in Lancaster, PA. Ask Steve Vai. He was pleasantly surprised.
PG is fun to watch with or without a guitar
Such an awesome guy
What a good guy. That's all
I love this. Toys room ❤❤❤ happiness and memories
got to love Paul, said it before somewhere but seems like a very nice down to earth dude rock on
Gonna teach him right . Right on Paul .
What a great guy, any interview etc I've seen he genuinely seems down to earth, and a pedal hoarder haha!!
What a great guy!
Very awesome and cool guy!
It's like a mad scientist's lab. I love it!
I would totally love to meet this guy
A living Beethoven, does not hear so well yet still producing music amazingly.
15:48 "The bits that I'd make in the 80s were only three, this is four - it's one faster." 😂 Paul Gilbert channeling Spinal Tap here (aka "these go to eleven ... it's one louder")
The nicest guy in the guitar world. Legend!
My bet is that his kid, after getting force fed 60's-70's music by his old man, will one day realize 80's and especially RACER X were the most amazing shit ever and annoy the crap out of his dad by working on alternate picking all freaking day at extreme volume. Then of course, as a young adult he will rediscover the Beatles and all the rest his dad was on about.
well said true words.. we all live in a loop of things that we used to love...people love to rediscover...his kid will find eden in the basement
Paul, thanks for letting me discover that Steve WONDER and TomJones song
Been playing 35 years. Just bought my first phaser pedal. We'll see!
Inlay stickers lol 😆 Paul's always had a great sense of humor that is also very practical 👍
Paul is the man!
Awesome & very under rated / "not popular" Guitarist
this man is a national treasure and the video of stevie wonder and tom jones is magic too
really cool pedals and gears
so funny!! great man, great gitarist, great musician!
Hahaha! How can you not love this guy?!
and now I can hit those adult notes haha
This is said about too many guitarists, but it's pretty safe to say that there's no one on the planet that can touch Paul, and a cool dude to boot🤘
Paul Gilbert might actually be one of the top five coolest people on Earth ... and I cannot think of the other four.
great Vid :)
Paul is such a classy guy and has amazing talent. Definitely in the top 10 of all time!
It'll be really ironic if his son eventually becomes electronic, ambient drone artist.
+TheZooropaBaby or not a musician at all
+TheZooropaBaby It'll be even more ironic if he becomes a belieber =))))))
That would still be awesome. All styles of music are beautiful! You just gotta have an open mind.
Gr8 guy very engaging
I love his unapologetic but humerus attitude about the absurdity of rock
I like how the old cordless drill was sitting next to his pedal board on the floor.
It's coming back on this upcoming record
Ryker Blade Coooool
Cool Fender Twin Reverb srsrsrrs>
ok ok, but this 2061x is just awesome!
I have the exact same Makita drill!
Gotta love this guy!! No fancy pedal boards. Tools laying in boxes...
Guitars just laying around..
Couldn’t be a cooler guy.
I really hope that Fireman with the P90s becomes a regular production model...I want one.
bought a Yamaha thr10x on a whim, fn love it, box of nasty
That's a true analog drill that decays out naturally.
focus!!!!!!!
He’s the best
I'm surprised that keeping his pedals like that doesn't break them. I'm super obsessed with keeping them in the boxes if I have them and so on.
Paul is the real "starlord"🤘😜
What a simple, messy, practical and human smell studio. Much more better than 'museum like' studio ! And I am sure his pedals become vintage look fast in his studio. lol
Does highlight the importance of protecting the eardrums
"If you feel like tweaking, you can spend some time with this one"
His enthusiasm for everything guitar is unrivaled and infectious. I guess I am saying- his kind of enthusiasm is not very 'ubiquitous' among the famous veteran guitarists.....I'll let myself out.
"When the aliens come down and we're trying to prove that they shouldn't eat us and that we're worthy of something, show them Tom Jones and Stevie Wonder singing together and then the human race is going to continue." best quote, hahaha!!
XD I love this guy
if you can not dig paul and his mad professor vibe, you're probably dead inside.
I get what he's saying about the older Deja Vibe. I got a newer, smaller silver one to go on my board so I could make room for another pedal, set it the same and it didn't sound as good to me as the older one I had just taken off the board... 🤣
Holy shit, WHERE IS THE FUCKING FOCUS? Who was operating the camera? But great material, indeed (just wanted to see the things better).
페달이펙터들이너무많아서,부럽습니다.
Gear heaven! It's a pity the camera guy used a 1982 Panasonic camcorder that won't focus.
that focus....
Was this filmed with super 8 film?
7:38 The transformer. maybe?... Sometimes power-adapters and such can get crazy hot.
I don't really use phasers, but now I feel I must be missing out on something.
he pick so fast even his pick turning dust
Of course a phenomenal guitarist.... but also strikes me as a really really nice guy :)
Was this video shot with a guitar pedal.
