  • (September 28, 2019) The Spence vs Porter pay-per-view co-main event saw unbeaten David "El Bandera Roja" Benavidez (22-0, 19 KOs) regain the WBC Super Middleweight World Championship from two-time champion Anthony "The Dog" Dirrell (33-2-1, 24 KOs) with a ninth-round TKO victory.
"Everything just fell in place perfectly," said Benavidez. "From the suspension to all the big fights I've been in. All of that helped me out in this fight. I did not make a mistake or open myself up more than I needed to. I worked behind my jab and got the stoppage. Things are going to get better and get tougher and I'm ready for the challenge."
The fight followed a similar pattern throughout, with Benavidez stalking his opponent looking to unload power shots, while Dirrell circled the ring looking to counter and keep him at bay with his jab.
Benavidez stayed in control through the early rounds, until Dirrell turned the tables momentarily in round four trying to batter Benavidez against the ropes, but he was unable to daze the 22-year-old.
In round six Benavidez broke through with a critical moment in the fight, landing a punch that opened up a cut over Dirrell's right eye. With the blood pouring, the cut was immediately a problem for Dirrell, who now had limited vision to stop the incoming assault.
"He hit me with a clean shot," said Dirrell. "That's my first time ever being cut by a punch. It opened up. There was nothing I could do about it. I couldn't see the whole fight after that. My corner did a good job on it, but I really couldn't see."
Despite having his cut checked by the ringside physician in rounds six, seven and eight, Dirrell was able to use his veteran savvy to stay in the fight. As the fight went to round nine Benavidez increased his offense, slowing Dirrell down enough where he could tee off with power punches in the corner.
As Dirrell tried to navigate away from Benavidez's offense, he began to take take more punishment and looked shaky on his feet. Referee Thomas Taylor officially stopped the fight 1:39 into the round, at the direction of Dirrell's corner. Benavidez ended the fight with a 165 to 94 advantage in punches landed, with the biggest margin coming from his 101 power shots landed to just 41 from Dirrell.
"There are so many emotions coming at me at once," said Benavidez. "We put so much hard work into this training camp. We left home and were away from everything. But I had the dream to become the youngest two-time super middleweight world champion and I made my dreams come true."
"I would have kept going in there," said Dirrell. "I'm not quitting against anybody. Everyone saw I didn't go down. My legs were still strong, but I couldn't do anything about it.
"We're going back to the drawing board. I'm still fighting. We won't end on a loss. You can put anybody in there with me."

Goosen and Lennox are questionable at times (mainly Goosen) but they were calling this fight correctly. Dirrel did a great job boxing off his back foot. Go watch Benavidez vs Ron Ellis then watch him in this fight. Dirrell did a great job blocking Benavidez punches, making him miss, used his jab well, counter punched well and did good going to Benavidez body. The rounds were very close but I had Dirrel taking most of them because of his scoring jabs to the head and body out pointing Benavidez.
Dirrel wasn't really hurting Benavidez and you got the feeling if Benavidez could coral him he could hurt Dirrel. But Dirrel did a good job using his footwork and elusiveness to make it where Benavidez couldn't really get off on him and score points, while also jabbing, countering, and going to Benavidez body. Dirrel actually had a chance to win had he not got cut

Dirrel thanks his coach for stopping the fight and understands why he did it. Even though he said he could have kept going. Wilder's coach stops the fight and he blames the coach and comes up with every excuse in the book. So even though Dirrel lost he still maintained his dignity and respect of the fans. Sometimes the commentators don't see things for what they are. In the 5th round at 21:11, Benavidez began an assault. After it was over Joe Goosen said Benavidez blocked 9 of those 10 punches. After the round they played the same in the slow motion, Goosen said at that point that Dirrell blocked every punch. When Dirrell backed away after the punches were thrown, he opened his mouth wide and stuck out his tongue, his face and eyes told the story. Joe Goosen was wrong; I counted 7 punches that landed clean out of 13 that were thrown, a couple more landed partially. Dirrell was scorched and hurt.
When a fighter sticks out his tongue it's almost always due to getting hit, not the opposite as Goosen claimed. He said that Dirrell's facial expression and sticking out his tongue was his way of telling Benavidez that he blocked the punches. Benavidez' hands are fast, you have to watch closely. Near the end of that volley of punches, Benavidez landed 4 lefts in a row. Before that he landed a jab to start off with, then a huge right hook around Dirrell's gloves that was the best shot in the flurry. He also landed a good left to the body near the end of the sequence and a few others in between. Watch in slow motion and you'll see what happened.
Goosen might be a good trainer but he missed that series. Dirrell looked and acted differently for the remainder of that round. His face was very red, his eyes were puffed up and he stopped goofing around. He was shook. The round ended with a jolting right by Benavidez. I think that Dirrell lost most of whatever he brought during that 5th round.
