Never apologize for who you are! You may have health issues but that doesn't take away from your talent or skill! I am proud of you for being so honest with your audience and if people can't deal with it than they need to be taking a hard look at themselves for being judgemental! You keep being you girl!!
We all have something about our selves we don't like. Don't worry about the hand tremor. It is a testimony to your skill level and what a great sewer you have become.
Hi Claire. I'm so happy I found your channel. Especially sharing your passion for sewing and your chronic health issues. I should be disabled but because I am self employed I am able to continue to work. I have fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto's disease as well as DISH and osteoarthritis. Sewing is my mental therapy. I love getting inspiration from teachers such as you! You serve a vital purpose for those like me! Peace and wellness to you!
You're such a brave, sweet soul. I think you did a great job and I've never noticed any tremors now or before. ....You provide great content and are an amazing teacher. ....That's why we watch you.
Hi Claire, I like your hair. I like to watch the different feet for the sewing machine used. Even if I've seen them used before I can always use a refresher to remember how to use them, especially the older I get. lol I hope you never feel like you can't show us how you sew. I think most of us are just sewing lovers that just enjoy watching your videos.
Wow, I'm in tears over your honesty about your trimmers. Thank you for showing up for us and for speaking up too. My son also has progressing trimmers and I know they make everything a bit more challenging. I so appreciate you.
Thank you! Sorry to make you cry! That wasn’t my intention and sorry to hear about your son. Challenging is exactly it!! I’m glad you understand where I’m coming from.
Excellent. You just keep these videos coming. For all those that criticize, just smile and see the plank in their eye. Also, as a quilter, I've found that if you are always making bias tape, using the June Tailor Shape Cut Ruler will allow you to use a much larger starting fabric and never have a missed cut.
Thank you. Your demo is so clear. I have a couple of tape makers but have found them too fiddly but you’ve inspired me to have another go. Please don’t feel that you need to explain or be apologetic about your tremors. It is simply part of you and you’re doing a great job. I really enjoy your videos.
Thank you for show this & how you folded the material was great. Thank you for being brave and fighting back your fear of showing your tremors. Really they were barely noticed. You really have a great gift of teaching others your craft.
What a great video! I have never seen that idea of folding multiple times prior to cutting the fabric. Genius! So happy you filmed this despite your tremors. They are part of you and we watch because of YOU! The tremors are just part of the wonderful person you are.
Thanks not only for the great sewing tips, but for being approachable and sharing about your life. Thank you for mentioning a non-24-hour circadian rhythm in other videos; it has given me a place to start researching something I might be struggling with, too.
No problem, I am glad to help! I wish I knew about non-24 12 years ago as it would have helped me to make sense of it all. Theres a good fb group for this. Im currently on an upside down table and urgh its difficult!! Good luck!
What a great video, it makes me sad that you even considered not releasing this excellent content because of your tremors. People who would judge you for it should take a long hard look at themselves. Please keep the videos coming.
You’ve only just recently popped up on my yt but, my, I’ve learned a lot from you already. Of course, I’ve now subscribed to your channel. Thank you. My best wishes for your health and personal circumstances.
This is awesome!!!! Thank you! And one reason I watch you is your authenticity. I’ve got terrible chronic pain due to severe psoriatic arthritis. I feel like you get it. Thanks for doing this for us! We really appreciate your tips
Just at the part of this video where you’ve said you almost didn’t show it because of your tremors. I’m so pleased you changed your mind! For DAYS I’ve been putting off cutting out a half cut (not in the drunk way, ha!) project because I’ve got to cut bias strips now and it’s frightened the life out of me! Eventually I thought let me check Penguin and Pear. Claire will know what to do and will talk me through. I watch your videos because they’re great! They’re funny and informative and really help inspire me to continue sewing. I’d hate to think that you’d worry that I or any of your other viewers would switch off because of your tremors or indeed anything else! You’re brilliant as you are and in what you do. 👍🏽♥️☺️
Awesome Claire. I have seen many ways to cuts bias tape but this was a new one to me. Genius. This is a great way to use up smaller scraps of your favorite fabric too.
This video is fantastic. I have watched several of your videos now, and as a beginner sewist, I truly appreciate your advice. I’m about to make an EASY pattern sleeveless summer dress, so this bias kit will be great. ❤ thankyou from 🇨🇦 ❤
Fantastic video, thank you. I made bias tape last year without using the kit ... it took ages! I was given the kit for Christmas- now I know how to use it.
Now off to the slippery fabric video . I just made bias binding last night and then I see this . Looking into getting one of those kits . Please try not to be self conscious about tremors . It’s out of your control. Love all the stuff you put out here . Learning so much from you . Xx
Oh, thank goodness you showed me how to use that bias binding foot..for some reason, I have 2, but haven't a clue how to use it!! Edit: lol.. the mini iron and sleeve board, sooo cute!!
Finally getting around to making my first bias binding, the first time I folded it wrong and made a bunch of useless empty fabric squares good thing this is more of a wearable mock up! Second round I got it figured out after folding it like 4 different ways 😂 should ha e watched this video last night!
Thank you for sharing this,I've got a bias foot and the bias maker but could not work out how to get the tape in.😅 yes I'm blonde, don't worry about showing your hands the tremors didn't even show and the best bit is I know how it do bias because of you.thanks.
Thank you for making this video explaining how to use that foot. I have been intimidated and afraid to try using mine. You made it seem like it's something I can be able to do relatively quickly. I'm going to get quite a bit of practice this week making bibs for twin grandsons.
Thanks for the demo of the binding foot, and the honest part that it may need adjusting as you go as I think many would think they were failing if it wasn't perfect as so many CZcamsrs imply. I think I'll stick with the continuous bias binding method for making it though, less fiddly sewing once you can get your head round joining the edges and lining up the markings. Thanks for the video
I will say that home-made bias binding stretches much better than store-bought. The store-bought (even at Joann's) seems very stiff with very little or no stretch at all.
If your able to work with what to some is a disability because that's what my grandmother called my hand and body trembles do not be ashamed or self conscious. My shaking has gotten worse to the point my whole body will shake if I am doing something new or intricate. I did not let it stop me from trying. It only stopped me for one thing. It stopped me with was doing veinopuncture so I could not do phlebotomy aka draw blood samples in my medical career. Never before ashamed of something your born with. You did not get a choice. I got better with my trembles and shakes as I grew older especially doing crafts. Somethings I had to scrap and start over. Some I accepted the end results because it turned out better than I thought. No one is perfect. If we were perfect we would all be the same. We are all perfectly imperfect. Love your videos. They are helping me with getting back into sewing. I am making my Mother of the bride dress for my daughters wedding. It's a family tradition. Now that my Moms gone I want to keep the tradition alive and get back to sewing. Lol than God for needle threaders only thing that bugs me about sewing cause it takes me a few.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience. I guess my comments come from a lifetime of being told “you’re shaking!”, “why are you shaking?”, “stop shaking!” So it’s always been something I am overly conscious about. But don’t fear it doesn’t stop me doing stuff. It’s hard when that stuff is to show others on video because others don’t want to see that but I do what I can. I honestly never realised how bad it is until I started filming myself. My whole body shakes too not just my arms/hands. Thanks for watching!!
@@Penguinandpear yeah as I got older more stress I feel worse it gets. My Dad had same issues lol career decorated soldier and special forces combat veteran who would get the shakes. Malaria didnt help him either. I get shakes so bad under stress I cant feed myself at times. I have to wait until the anxiety goes down. Worst I had it was during and after hurricane Michael here in Florida. I lost nothing but my favorite shade tree but got evacuated from a shelter to 127 miles away until they could establish my home was safe and power was back up. Being disabled onto of shakes dont help lol. Then separated from family. My Bro and daughter live with me. They got split up too. Took several weeks to get back together. I have some serious health issues on top of the shakes that make them worse Lupus being one of them. Shakes are so bad I am no longer aloud to cook. I dropped an iron skillet of hot grease and water down my front. Thank God I had a thick loose robe on and heavy house slippers. Got few second degree burns that are healed. My next kitchen trick cost me dish washing and all kitchen priviledges even sandwich makings. I dropped 2 entire family dinners. Washing dishes I dropped a large Damascus stainless steel butcher knife between my toes that nailed my shoe to the floor. No blood but scared the hell out of everyone. I find best thing about crafts and sewing is I can stop and rest my hands if the shaking is bad. I stop soon as I can take deep breath and blow it out then I stretch drink something and get back to it. As long as we are doing what we love and sharing little things like a tremble does not matter. That tremble makes you special. Your showing people like me not to let it stop us.
Thanks so much Claire. Wonderful demonstration of how to cut fabric for bias tape, and use of the kit. You took a bunch of my "bias tape fear" away. Please don't ever worry about your tremors - if you had not mentioned them I wouldn't have noticed, and in fact forgot all about your mention of it as I watched the video. Good on you!
Such good information! Thank you ‘sew’ much! 😂 I just found you very recently and I’ve already shared your channel with two people that want to learn to sew! Both of them will love your personality as much as I do.
This is exactly the video I needed and it was super clear and helpful! Thank you for being brave and posting it because it really helped me. I recently discovered your channel and I am so excited to find someone who is closer to my size (especially in the bust) who makes clothing that I can actually imagine creating and wearing. So thank you for creating this content!
Hi Claire, I tried the bought stuff too, but it never seems very biasy. So have been making my own, cut and iron. You've inspired me to try these little gadgets. Will grab some and give them a go. Always find value in your vids, cheers.
Happy New Year Claire! 💕 Thank you for this video - I always make my own tape, but I never knew about the bias binding foot so a special thank you for that. Wishing you good health and much happiness in 2022 - I look forward to your next videos.
Thank you for the demo of the bias binding kit, especially the binding foot. I’ve looked at my kit and wondered how to use that foot and now I know! Really informative video - as for the tremors, I didn’t notice anything at all. Please consider doing more of these videos because they’re really helpful to a new sewist like me! ❤️
Wonderful video Claire, great idea to keep folding the fabric! I keep a look out for fabric in the remnant bins when shopping in-store ... great rainy day task or between projects to make up tape.
I have the binding makers without the foot, but I’m going to buy a foot now I’ve seen how easy it is to use .... I sometimes use empty thread reels to wind the tape on to .... I really enjoy your straight forward, no messing style 👍🏻
I used to buy bias tape, but as you also mentioned, sometimes these are not on the bias :( So I am going to start making my own in the future. Thank you Claire. Always enjoy your videos xxx
Interesting Claire - but you had me on edge seeing your sewing machine not fully placed on the table! Mind you I know it’s safe, I have the same model and it’s no lightweight, so unlikely to fall off! I make my own tape too, I don’t like store bought stuff.
Lol I was waiting for someone to mention that lol. I actually didn’t realise it was like that until editing the video but as you say it was perfectly safe. As well as being heavy the sofa was right under where it would have dropped so it would have been perfectly safe. Yes! Handmade tape is the way forward!
I think it's wrong that social media has so many content creators feeling that they have to apologize or be self conscious about everything that makes them who they are. I have seen a few of your videos where you mentioned your health issues and it's uncomfortable knowing you feel obligated to reveal and apologize because of the perceptions of rude people everywhere. Anyone that acts mean has much more "wrong" in their lives and I believe you are a much better person than they will ever be with their judgements and evilness. I bought a similar bias tape maker kit, with binding foot a couple years ago. I practiced making my tape a little too enthusiastically, so I now have a lot of bias tape that doesn't match any fabric I have on hand for current projects. I need to buy a bunch of half yard remnants of different solid colors soon. Take care.
I am so excited about this video! I learned two very important things that I have never seen before on any video! Thank you so much! Big shock on the price of the set! During last year, those were $30 or more! If I get a different set without the stuff, will you still get credit? Love you hair!!! And love those bangs! You really wear it well! Hey, I saw your red wall in today's vid as you showed your cute York Jumper! Wow! :)
Thanks Milli, I bet they went up in price due to the pandemic. As long as you click the links I’ll get credit whatever you buy. Thanks re hair I got a bit scissor happy lol. Ah that was my Tilly indigo I showed :-) but yes urgh that red wall is GOING! lol 😂
I don’t like store-bought binding, and I think making my own is worth the effort. It makes such a difference in the garment. Have you ever made bias binding with the tube method? It’s my favorite if I need lots. BTW, who cares about your tremors? That’s just you, and we all have something.
Just want to mention a true Hong Kong finish doesn’t need bias tape. It’s a tailor technique using just a cut strip of straight fabric applied to the edge of a seam allowance right side to right side, and fold the cut side under the edge of the fabric and stitch down. Not fancy but a great technique for enclosing cut edges.
Indeed. I didn’t say it needs bias tape just that some do use bias tape to finish the seams. You don’t need bias tape to finish straight hems either but it’s somehow easier to use bias tape just because it’s ready to use. I think with hk seams they are great in coats and jackets and some blazers but anything lighter they can add unnecessary bulk.
hi Claire, I found this video helpful, thanks! About to make the York pinafore out of a fabric called duck, which is a light canvas type. Do you think that regular cotton bias binding would work OK?
Yes it should do if you made it. If it’s shop bought have a look closely at the grain to see if it’s diagonal to the bias tape or give it a gentle pull to see if it has any stretch.
Bias binding is a preferred way to bind the edge of a quilt. If a thread wears out (after YEARS of use) , it won't run across the entire edge of the heirloom item. Yet, I don't have a kit to make tape. ... hmm... am I wasting time? ... I use purchased bias tape to make ties for charity "pillow case" dresses for little girls. Otherwise I make it myself. You have me thinking about getting a tape maker. Thanks.
Sewing time is never time wasted. There may be more optimum ways to sew but these tips are mainly aimed at beginners. I can only talk from my experience and it used to take me a lot longer but honestly we all have to find the way to work that works best for us. You may be super fast in the way you work, I don’t know. Good to know why quilters add binding. Thanks for sharing that.
Thankyou Claire, another very useful and timely vlog. I really appreciate you taking the time to share these tips with us. I’m planning to make an unlined Liesl Jacket and I’m going to try finishing it with Hong Kong seams. Should I do the seams on my cut pieces before sewing together, or do them once all are sewn? Thanks again for your very informative videos.
Anyone have any tips on keeping the bias binding tool going crooked? Sometimes I notice my bias binding fold goes off because I have pulled the tool funky.....one of the reasons why I went back to the old school way of making bias binding.....I could never keep the folds straight using the tool.
Yes you can make your own using the tool which ever way you want to make it as I mentioned in the video. You just wouldn’t use the foot to turn it under.
Thank you SO MUCH everyone for your lovely comments, they mean the WORLD to me!!! And thank you for watching!
instablaster.
Dont stop making these tutorials youa re amazing. I have had ptsd for the best part of my 66 years. I can understand your instructions!!!!!
That’s good to know, thank you Marigold x
Love your videos, sewing for over 40 years but still learning new ways of doing things. You are a beautiful person.
Hi Claire, I like your hair. I like to watch the different feet for the sewing machine used.
Don’t feel self conscious about having tremors. I think it is awesome that you see despite them
Excellent. You just keep these videos coming. For all those that criticize, just smile and see the plank in their eye. Also, as a quilter, I've found that if you are always making bias tape, using the June Tailor Shape Cut Ruler will allow you to use a much larger starting fabric and never have a missed cut.
*hugs* don't worry about your trembles. That don't take away from your smarts, your knowledge or your personality. Go you!
Love your videos. We all have something please don't let that stop you. You are a great teacher.
I loved to see the foot being used. Love your videos. I learn a lot.
Thank you. Your demo is so clear. I have a couple of tape makers but have found them too fiddly but you’ve inspired me to have another go. I really do get it ❤️
Thanks for mentioning your tremors! I have them too and appreciate your honesty. My dad and his dad had them too, and people just don't understand.
Your demo was very well done! Didn’t really notice any tremor but very brave of you to post!
Thank you that has made bias binding much less scary for a new sewist
Just at the part of this video where you’ve said you almost didn’t show it because of your tremors. I’m so pleased you changed your mind! well that is what that weird looking foot is for! I didnt know you could cut the fabric quickly like that either - thanks for the tips!
You are amazing!!!! And NEVER apologize!!!
Excellent! (Love your bangs! And color, too. You don't ever need to go to the hairdresser again, even after the pandemic.)
Bless you thank you 😊

Love this video. Thank you for sharing your talents. ❤️❤️❤️
I like to make my own binding, too. Much nicer to get the colour I want. Love your videos.
I think it sits nicer on the fabric too.
I will have a go I have the kit but have been too scared but after watching your video I will make some thank you x

I'm so glad u showed us the video. Your an amazing kind hearted lady and have such great knowledge
Excellent! I will definitely try this.
Fabulous….thank you 😀
Excellent!
Great explanation
great video. Thank you for the demo.
Great video, thanks very much!
Thank you. Have the kit but wasn’t certain how to use
Another very helpful video Thank you Claire. I always admire your straight talking no nonsense advice.
Hope it’s not too blunt! I do struggle holding back!
Thank you Claire! Very helpful video! I’ve never seen a bias binding foot or how it works before. Nice to learn new tricks! 😀👍👍
Wonderful video Claire, great idea to keep folding the fabric! I keep a look out for fabric in the remnant bins when shopping in-store ... great rainy day task or between projects to make up tape.
Fabulous demo Clare, great teacher. Thank you so much.
So happy to have found you!!! Loved your bias tape instructions. Thank you for teaching me how to do it!!!
I have the binding makers without the foot, but I’m going to buy a foot now I’ve seen how easy it is to use .... I sometimes use empty thread reels to wind the tape on to .... I really enjoy your straight forward, no messing style 👍🏻
I just got my kit today. I can’t wait to make my own binding. Thanks for showing. 👍
fantastic, and i like your hair
Thank you! I was a bit too scissor happy!!! Was sick of not being able to see a hairdresser so I diyed it lol
@@Penguinandpear I get that way too, stay safe
See Claire! I am not the only one to like it! :) Yeaaaaa Helen!
I used to buy bias tape, but as you also mentioned, sometimes these are not on the bias :( So I am going to start making my own in the future. Thank you Claire. Always enjoy your videos xxx
Happy to help xx
Take care.
Great, Claire, thank you!! I love your cutting method!
Ah that was my Tilly indigo I showed :-) but yes urgh that red wall is GOING! lol 😂
Thank you Claire. X
I really enjoy your videos! Thanks Claire
Hthanks so much for his video, I bought the kit from amazon and can't wait for it to arrive!❣️❣️❣️
Yay excited for you!!
Thank you so much for sharing. You are amazing
Great tutorial, thank you! I keep meaning to make some! I really like the bias binding you can get from The Specky Seamstress too - such fun prints :D
Kallis S: is that Specky Seamstress .com or is it on Etsy, or somewhere else. Thank you for a new place to check out.
I don’t like store-bought binding, and I think making my own is worth the effort. It makes such a difference in the garment. Have you ever made bias binding with the tube method? It’s my favorite if I need lots.
BTW, who cares about your tremors? That’s just you, and we all have something.
No I haven’t, I’ve never heard about the tube method but I just read up on it. Interesting. Thanks for letting me know about it.

Let us know how it works for you if you decide to try it.
Thank you a great help
On your video unloading your Jaguar serger, what is the brand in Canada?
Thank you for the easy explanation & the link to Amazon. Luv hugs & kisses 🌻💚🦋*;0)
Great tutorial! I have been looking to get a bias binding maker, I’ll follow your link.
Yay thank you!
hi Claire, I found this video helpful, thanks! About to make the York pinafore out of a fabric called duck, which is a light canvas type. Do you think that regular cotton bias binding would work OK?
Me too... I hope the lighter weight cotton I picked out will work. I am procrastinating at the moment.
Yes it should do if you made it. If it’s shop bought have a look closely at the grain to see if it’s diagonal to the bias tape or give it a gentle pull to see if it has any stretch.
@@Penguinandpear thanks, will do :)
I don’t think it matters either way, do what’s easiest for you. Good luck!!
Anyone have any tips on keeping the bias binding tool going crooked? Sometimes I notice my bias binding fold goes off because I have pulled the tool funky.....one of the reasons why I went back to the old school way of making bias binding.....I could never keep the folds straight using the tool.
I found pulling the strip to the left a little helped but really I think it’s a skill to develop! Also make sure the bias binding is snug in the foot.
Could you make your own if you wanted to hide the now binding on the inside ??
Yes you can make your own using the tool which ever way you want to make it as I mentioned in the video. You just wouldn’t use the foot to turn it under.
