Is Portal 1 or Portal 2 better?

  • Both Portals are good. But here's the completely unnecessary and pointless argument on which one is better.
    Discord: / discord
Portal was a game released in 2007, and it quickly became really popular. From the success, Valve released Portal 2 that expanded on the concept even further but made a lot of changes. So this video looks at the differences between the two games. All opinions are subjective, so whether you like one over the other is on you.

Out of all of Valve’s franchises, Portal is the only one that I would argue doesn’t need another entry. The story is complete, and the main puzzle idea seems to have run its course over the two games.

I'd say Portal 2 is definitely more polished and has a soul to it. But man, I'm just so over-attached to the Portal 1's isolating atmosphere. The lonely feel of Source-engine was never creepy to me, but very soothing and relaxing. Works best for Gmod when I'm building something, and especially for Portal 1 when solving puzzles. Mostly community-made ones, which can take very... Very long time, just to solve one chamber. But I also might be biased in nostalgia for Portal 1's aesthetic.

Honestly I feel like the two games are a whole lot more similar than people think. Portal 1 wasn't just dark and lonely the whole time, it had plenty of comedy as well, albiet maybe a bit more toned down. Portal 2 may be more character and comedy driven, but it still has lots of atmospheric, dramatic, or even dark moments, even outside of old Aperture.

There is absolutely no way that Half Life 3 could ever live up to the hype and expectations set up for it. IMO already Half Life 2 has aged a lot more poorly than Half Life 1 has, because it relies so heavily on introducing a bunch of "new" mechanics that are kind of commonplace in today's gaming world. The question is whether Half Life 3 could possibly find enough new ways to considerably innovate in the current gaming world to hold itself up? I personally don't think we'll see many groundbreaking game mechanics in video games anymore.

This might be a silly deciding factor.
But I gotta give it to two for setting the bar for valve games/and for modern linear-narrative games as a whole
1 is remarkable in it’s original ideas, puzzles, and it’s compact but interesting story. It’s an A+ proof of concept
2 arguably delivered on the full potential of portal as a game. More and better puzzles, more and better story, multiplayer, player creation.
Also for what it’s worth, Portal 2 was basically the “final edition” of the source engine, and I think that P2 exhibited source at it’s absolutely best for gameplay, visual experience, and cinematic/narrative functionality.
This feels a bit idealistic, but when HL2 and the episodes come to Switch, I really hope they get the “source 1.5” treatment

It feels like each puzzle is simply going through the motions rather than something you have to really sit down and consider, before having a eureka moment. It does keep the pace of the game flowing but it also hurts to see that portal 1 missed the potential to have some more rewarding puzzles, without all of the extra mechanics in portal 2.

Portal 2 may arguably be the best game Valve put out since Half-Life 1. The development process went kind of smooth (Smoother than HL2, or Alyx, or even Portal 1 in that regard), new mechanics have been added, the lore has been enriched gracefully and it's generally a polished, solid experience. What bugs me more is how in HL:A there are (to my taste) way too many direct borrowings from P2, be it Vortigaunt murals that resemble Ratman's, sArCaStIc Hahn lady or Russell who's basically Wheatley but without the evil part.

I think the most notable thing for portal 2 is that it changed that terrifying chell model into a much more cartoony one.
Except the new mode of chell doesn’t have pupils, so it just blankly stares… (in gmod I mounted portal 2 and portal 1)

originally loved portal 2, especially for its expansiveness and humour
but more recently I’ve really started to appreciate portal 1 for its sterility and atmosphere of loneliness
I think a big difference can especially be found in the two’s soundtrack
listening to something like ‘self esteem fund’ you’ll notice it sounds completely different to anything from portal 2
anyway, really good and well-made video :)

Portal 1 just...feels better to me. The loneliness and dark tone, the claustrophobia of being completely alone with GLaDOS. Portal 2 added many new characters, a bigger back story, and much more humor. I personally preferred less humor, more isolation, more mystery of the back story, and the not knowing what the plot really was until the end....and then you still weren't 100% sure. Was the cake a lie? And GLaDOS being much more evil felt better.
Portal 2 had the massive advantage of learning from what people liked or disliked from the first game. Sure, it's better looking, more polished and has more features, but that's to be expected in a sequel years later. But it also had a much bigger team, more money, and a lot of knowledge gained. Everyone loved Wheatly, and I did too, but I think his character too often felt like it was there just for comic relief and exposition. Portal 1 seemed very straight forward, but sometimes I think Portal 2 was trying to be too much with the overload of humor, story, new mechanics etc.
Both are great games, nearly perfect games, but it boils down to personal taste. My personality is more Portal 1.

I think using the word horror may have been a stretch for what Portal does with its isolation. Its more just 'unnerving'. Horror can be unnerving, obviously but Portal i think has always had more of a tounge in cheek atmosphere alongside it, even as early as the first game. Portal 2 didnt introduce comedy, it was always there. Silly nitpick but, i thought it was worth saying lol

tho portal 1 get's a bonus point on how well it aged.
there wasn't that much detail in the worldbuilding but that made the game feel somewhat uncanny and that's totaly fitting the tone of the game.
portal 2 on the other side was way more cinematic but still managed to make the facility "believable" and the feel of the old parts of the facility is truly amazing!

my preference is with portal 1, not because of anything in the game but more because it's less game (it's shorter). since it's so short, it's a lot more replayable, kills a bit of time easily. i don't have to dedicate as much for a playthrough as with portal 2.

I actually love both Portal 1 & 2, they both have their special place in my heart. They both manage to motivate me to actually explore the maps to find out, of what might actually happend at this place and it lead me to find out more about the story arc outside of the game. The puzzles were great and not to hard to figure out how to solve them. Sometimes it was a bit of a challenge and at the same time a lot of fun, especially to find out if there is a different way to solve them. But to this day it bothers me, on how on earth it is possible to power a fully functional AI mini device with a potato, i mean you need a bazillion (overexaggerated) potatos to play doom... on a calculator, not to think of a fully functional AI, powered by 1 potato...
Nice work, always entertained and informed at the same time, thanks!

The perfect Portal game for me would be the lonely atmosphere of Portal 1 with the amazing gameplay of Portal 2

It depends on what you want out of Portal.
Portal 1 was a great showcase for innovative new gameplay, plus a very Valve-style story to discover and beat with an entertaining villain.
Portal 2 took Portal 1 as a seed and put 4x the lore behind it, providing 3 major arcs to play through, side character development, and introduced more mechanics to serve as room puzzles.
