This is the truth! I always mention this when people say Kandi can't sing. And Tosha is the voice of Xscape. If that were so, they would not have sounded horrible when they tried to make music without her. Tosha has a beautiful voice, but it is better used for all the runs she likes to do.

Imo, the public wanted to see all of the members together...not just 3. I personally don't think it had nothing to do with who was singing high or low. Had Kandi complied, there wouldn't have been an Xscap3. I actually enjoyed "memory lane" tho.

@@sassyintrovert But Kandi's solo projects were recieved better and got more airplay and video play and released more singles from her solo albums than Latocha... and as far as income/net worth Kandi beats them all (COMBINED!) because in addition to all her other businesses, she was THE SONG WRITER! for the group and for other artist and has written multiple hot records for top recording artist, which made her MILLIONS! and Kandi has a multi leveled vocal range from the lowest to being able to hit the highest (near whistle note) in the group and Latocha is just LOUD! and and over use of runs doesn't always equal THE BEST SINGER IN THE GROUP!

Kandi's voice defines Xscape's sound! It grounds their harmonies. Gives the group its feet. Kandi also gave us their most distinctive lead verses on the likes of My Little Secret, Tonight, Just Kickin and many others. I've always likened what Kandi's voice does for Xscape to what Maxine Jones' voice did for En Vogue. Maxine rounded out their early recordings with her sound which like Kandi's is rough and refined in equal measure. Incidentally both these ladies have/had the widest ranges in their respective groups (En Vogue's Part Of Me perfectly displays this in Maxine's case). Ladies with dark bluesy voices like these were pushed to the back in girl groups of the sixties, modern R&B placed them front and centre and built entire catalogues around them. And we are all the better for it. In short, all the girls in Xscape can sing but without Kandi's voice their "sound" disappears and becomes glaringly generic.

Whatever part keeps the melody is most important, but the melody can be in either soprano, alto or tenor parts, although soprano tends to have it the most. Moreover, Xscape's harmony is very distinctive to their overall sound which is complete with the low, unique tenor that Kandi holds. The lead vocalist does not carry Xscape's overall sound altogether. No, Kandi is not the best singer in the group. That's not the point. Neither has the Je ne sais quoi to be solo. And the Tamikas are the gems of the group. Their ego just doesn’t make them need to be up front. Great breakdown

Excellent breakdown! LaTocha and Kandi are equally important.
LaTocha has the most sultry voice and best musical phrasing of the 4, but her excessive runs take away from how great her voice really is.
🔊 "For The Rest of My Life (Xscape)
Kandi has a strong, clear, clean sound. Her overall technique is her distinct quality. But it has always caused her to either hit or miss. Her voice has lost clarity and resonance over the years. If she worked to improve her technique, she would sound a lot better more often.

It's interesting. Xscape was like a fusion of En Vogue (4 part harmony) and TLC. Kandi was like the TBoz low voice lead. Their record company was copying that hit formula.
Many record companies started to sign up girl groups when the Holy Trinity of distinctive RnB girl groups consisting of En Vogue, TLC and SWV found commercial success in the early 90s and paved the way for all the others. It always comes back to these 3 groups that had a unique identity and sold the most.

A perfect example is their song Love on My Mind. Latocha and Tamika some lead and Kandi and Tiny are the chorus.
Tamika could easily do Latocha's part, but that song bangs because of Kandi. Without her, that song wouldn't sound the same.
