Agreed. The contract was also negotiated by the Marner camp, with the notion that Marner would be a significant contributor to a Stanley Cup. The terms are what they are based on this notion. Given the false advertising, the Leafs would not be in the wrong to try to trade him this summer.

If Leafs extend Mitch’s Contract - they should only pay him to play regular season games. That way the Leafs should save about $2 Million to $3 Million per year. No point in just seeing more Marner playoff disappointments - every first round the Leafs play. 😀

The Atlantic is the toughest/best division though, thats not an excuse thats just a factual statement. The team that comes out of the Atlantic has made the cup final 6 straight years, thats over half a decade of one division always having a cup finalist. The Atlantic has also won 2 of the last 5 Cups. The Atlantic would have won even more championships if the division wasnt as tough as it is because by the time the Atlantic team makes the cup final they are so beat up and worn down that they literally have nothing left.... and yet they still have won 3 (if the Panthers win) out of the last 6 Stanley cups and have made 6 straight cup finals. Thats one division winning 50% of the Stanley cups in the last 6 years, and one division making 100% of the cup finals which is something none of the other divisions can say.
Those are all just facts. The Atlantic has been the best division in hockey for over half a decade. Boston, Tampa, Florida and Toronto is a disgusting division and it goes the same way for all of those teams, not just the Leafs.
Now, the Leafs are still a mess and their stars disappear in the playoffs but lets not act like if the Leafs played in the Pacific they wouldnt have made 2 western conference finals in the last 6 years. Playing in the Atlantic helps no one.
