such a strong control and precision to do that upside-down spin and look at those tiny GOEs on them... while judges willing to give terrible Flutzers a huge bonus.
The core strength and balance needed to do this spin is incredibly difficult, just try doing this off the ice. I have never seen another skater achieve her position either. The torso and free leg in alignment, exactly perpendicular to the spinning leg, the torso parallel to the ice, and the knee held above the hip and straight up, not sideways. Other attempts at this spin always look awkward because they're changing the alignment to make it easier, and often have trouble with the spin itself. Harding and Chouinard are often credited with this spin but neither held the knee above the hip (requirement for a camel spin). Harding didn't actually layover, and Chouinard's wasn't perpendicular. The beauty of this spin when done at Yuna's peak (see Send in the Clowns) is such that it seems as though she has fallen asleep while floating on the ice. She performed this spin throughout her career and continued to improve on it. It's really an underrated aspect of her skating.
My coach tried to explain this to me over zoom for our off-ice today and safe to say I don't see how any human can twist themselves into this and still stand, let alone spin!
I could watch her do this spin all day long. I'm going to try it tomorrow night. It should be a laugh, but I gotta learn it somehow. We'll see how long it takes me!
@RollRSkateGirl Thank you for your info, but I just quoted from Yuna's autobiography. She said she and her coach both considered spin's variation cuz of level-up and made this spin. Well.. I didn't think she saw "ROLLER" skaters in "1970" ;) Also, I just watched 'inverted spin' and it's great but no one did beautiful as her. no grace. no parallel to the ground. no bending free leg at right angle. So that's why Yuna Spin's worthy of the name.
I want to add this. I do respect Josee Chouinard who was a technically strong and beautiful to watch skater. I just don't find any problem calling that position 'Yuna spin'. Yuna's been doing that spin for how long, 5 seasons? She's been doing it in EVERY season, ALONE. Every Yuna fan thinks it is her signiture move and she's making it popular. Look at Zhang and Asada trying to do that position. Yuna has every right to name that position after her. That's my two pence.
This YuNa camel is most refined and beautiful camel spin that moves people's heart. Maybe Bent-leg layback spin is once performed by Harding, but as you see, The position of Yuna's upper body is definitely different from Harding's. I know that some female skaters are trying to do YuNa camel on the ice after watching YuNa's beauuuuuuuuuuutiful performance. Theirs are not very pretty to see though, especially the one I've watched recently in July.
to uwoeric: Here is a quote from wikipedia on Biellmann spin: The spin is named after Swiss figure skater Denise Biellmann, who made it her signature move in the late 1970s. Denise Biellmann did not invent the spin, but was the first skater to perform the move and win a major international title. Just change the word Biellmann to Yuna and I don't see any conflict there. Do you? Besides, their positions are not exactly same indeed.
herm712/Yes. Maybe Yuna's position is combined layover position and bent-leg position, and maybe inspired by Josee Chouinard's or HardingCamel. Yuna's is close to Chouinard's than harding's, but not same as Chouinard's. Her body takes the form of perfect horizontal line with the ice and she does upward-facing completely. Plus, keeps her balance quite well. No one can do that position as well as yuna. So It can be named after Yu-Na.And I think Caroline zhang needs more practice for this position.
Caroline Zhang can keep her pearl spins..... but she never attempted any other spins. Except the one where she tucks her rear of the head to the crock of her back, as if she has completely contorted herself when she does the teardrop spin.
>narunoa Button camel is flying camel spin. Yuna-camel is a variation of that. They are two different positions. If you don't believe it, google button camel spin.
@frankintele No. This spin was invented by Yuna in 2004. Josee's spin is not the same as Yuna's one. Her upper body is completely parallel to the ground with her arms stretched -but Josee didn't. Also, did you really watch this vid? I doubt it, man. ;) Yuna has performed the position since 2004. So, Orser has nothing to do with Yuna Spin.
nah, a lot of skaters can do that camel (Dick Button actually credits himself with doing it first!!). however, Yuna is the one who popularized it over the last 2 years and hers is done exceptionally well. but lot's of people can do it. check out caroline zhang's exhibition skates. she does a gorgeous upward-facing where she catches her free leg skate.
I am a dance teacher. I enjoy figure skating, but do not know much about the technical elements. Interesting visual effect, the skater never maintained this position for more than four rotations. It is usually a transition to other spins. Well, I learned something today!
What about Josee Chouinard? Hers was parallel to the ice, and she was doing it way back in the 90's. I never said Tonya's was good, but she did attempt to do the move years before Yu-Na ever came on the scene. I don't think a skater should get a skill named after her just because she happened to do it well, especially if she wasn't the first to do it. Are we going to rename the Charlotte spiral after Sasha Cohen because she did it the best? Or the rename the Biellmann after Caroline Zhang? No
Can someone please be so kind to let me know the full name of the background piano music and where I can purchase a copy of it? Thanks a lot! :-) The music is so beautiful!
@dyuo0o no, this is not invented by Yuna. Yuna Spin was known as Harding Spin from Tonya Harding who used to do it and also became her signature move. Tonya didn't invent the move and most definitely Yuna did not invent it either. I don't agree with frankitele but Josee Chouinard is one of the earliest known to do this move, this is also her signature move.
@wontonboi64 Yeah they went separte ways. There's whole drama behind that but I don't wanna bore you with the gory details. Anywho she's got a new coach. I don't remember his name but I heard that he's Qwan's brother in law. So she's training in LA area I guess. I also heard that she's gonna use Korean folk song called arirang for her new long program.
By the way, the layback-style camel spin is not an original Yu-Na move. It was invented by Canadian champion Josee Chouinard back in the early 90's. Yu-Na has brought it back and does it beautifully! Not surprising, as Brian Orser knew Josee very well, and it was probably his idea to bring the move back for Yu-Na's repertoire.
beautiful... and she makes it seem so effortless too.
whe she was a junior
Her coach was not brian
so. that yuna camel spin is her own
she's not chinese!!!
yup. she's Korean
Queen yuna's camel spin is soooo beautiful...
The spin looks like she's on the verge of collapse, yet she's in total control. Splendid!
such a strong control and precision to do that upside-down spin and look at those tiny GOEs on them... while judges willing to give terrible Flutzers a huge bonus.

👏👏👏 well said.
My coach tried to explain this to me over zoom for our off-ice today and safe to say I don't see how any human can twist themselves into this and still stand, let alone spin!
So beautiful yuna.. thank u♥
Yu-Na Camel is so unique and perfect.
I've never seen before that so beautiful spin.
It is a symbol of Yuna!!
A cross between a camel and a layback. Seriously hard too.
this is a lot harder than it looks, i cant even do it off ice
I could watch her do this spin all day long. I'm going to try it tomorrow night. It should be a laugh, but I gotta learn it somehow. We'll see how long it takes me!
:D I looooooooove this spin! She's been using ''yu-na camel spin' in every competition since 2004! absolutely creative and fabulous!!!!!!
it's yuna's signature spin. I lke it..
Wow. How could do that? I always admire her techniques. Really gorgeous spin!

This spin is very unique. Yu-na is the only skater who has performed this spin consistantly and perfectly since her junior age(!!!). :D
amazing position! it looks a little bit painful for me, but it's beautiful position. incredibly well-balenced position.
@RollRSkateGirl Thank you for your info, but I just quoted from Yuna's autobiography. She said she and her coach both considered spin's variation cuz of level-up and made this spin. Well.. However she does it easily.
I think she is genius
She's spectacular
I Love Yu-Na Camel spin!! :-D
It's such a difficult layback spin. She does it with a lot of speed and elegance!!
이거 그나마 잘 따라하는 선수가 차준환 선순데 저렇게 왼다리 완전히 연직으로 접는 건 연아밖에 못함..
I looooove her signature movement 'Yu-na Camel spin'
I Love Yu-na Spin.
so beautiful position.
This spin was executed, before Yu Na, by Henrik Walentin, Josee Chouinard, Tonya Harding to name a few...
very unique and difficult position. but so beautiful...:)
It's awesome!
Sooooo beautiful song!
I like that camel spin position. It is the most beautiful spin I have ever seen. Yu na camel.. I'll remember it!

I love Yuna spin. So beautiful position.

she is really great skater. I love her every single movement, her personality.

@keikomoon17 keikomoon17/ no, Yuna Spin is different with Harding Spin
Yuna Spin is upside down position(180%) but Harding Spin is not .
I am a dance teacher. I enjoy figure skating, but do not know much about the technical elements. Interesting visual effect, the skater never maintained this position for more than four rotations. It is usually a transition to other spins. Well, I learned something today!
She's great and will win gold in Vancouver. Hey when are they going to name a spin in honor of Stephane Lambiel?
