- There are a ton of reasons you might want to record and stream gameplay from your Nintendo Switch. In this video I show you exactly how you can get started.

The console’s built in recording features leave a lot to be desired and there are no built-in streaming functions whatsoever. I started making videos for CZcams that included gameplay a few months ago and I feel like my workflow has improved tremendously over time. I made this video to share with you all the two easiest methods I’ve found to record or stream Switch gameplay.

The first method is a fairly simple timed record/capture button press/hold every 20-25 seconds. This will create sequential clips that don’t skip. Once you have the full length of your gameplay segment, you can send them to your editing device via the built in QR wifi transfer or using an SD Card (Much Easier!) Then just place the clips back to back in your editor.
The second method involves getting a capture card. I use a very cheap HDMI to USB 3.0 capture device that I got on Amazon for about 18$. I don’t have 2 displays in my workflow and I don’t play any games where 0 input lag is entirely necessary . I’m also lucky enough to run a setup that performs well so my latency is minimal. Once you connect the card, we download OBS Studio and add one input source for audio, and one for video and direct them to the USB3.0 Inputs from the capture card. From there you can adjust your settings, and start recording/streaming!
It’s surprisingly easy and affordable especially since the software side is completely free! The only truly big limiting factor aside form the 20$ for a capture card is the system performance of your computer. Streaming and recording gameplay is taxing and it may not run optimally regardless of what card you’re able to buy so keep that in mind. You can try to adjust the settings in OBS to smaller resolutions and lower frame rates to help compensate.
Possible tip?! I remember for whatever reason, when I had a slower computer - using the built in (in this case Quicktime) video recorder to take the USB3.0 input had a little bit less lag than any external software like OBS. Maybe that can help get you a few extra FPS!

What if you got the USB digital audio?
2nd
I've watched many tutorials to see if there was one that makes sense to me and helps me, this was the first and only one I've seen so far.
@thehotdogking7734 hey r using a 2nd monitor to game on ? Cuz i am and the quality drops hard while using a capture card.
So, I'm playing Hogwarts Legacy so that's an action game. If I wanted an expensive one, would I need 2 monitors?
If anyone’s having trouble with the audio like I was, go to settings on your computer and open microphone privacy settings. Make sure allow apps to access microphone is turned on, should fix it
Hi! I tried to do it, but my audio still not working! I checked other blogs but they didnt help me! What am I supposed to do?
im windows 11 so the settings are diffrent
@@SMGames776Me too and everything with me works fine. For those, who has their switches not working on their PCs, I recommend looking at OBS Studio.
1. Find the video capturing device in that list;
2. Click it right button;
3. Choose "Advanced audio settings";
4. Find it again, and near audio choose "Listening and streaming" (my OBS is russian so I could translate wrongly, do not take it seriously please❤)

Thank you! I've been trying to find good tutorials but this is the first one I've found that actually explains how to set it up correctly!
I was having issues getting set up until I watched your video! Thank you for such valuable info and taking out the guess work!
Thanks this was super helpful and just what I needed. I’m not planning on streaming but I’ve wanted to make quick 2 minute Pokémon let’s plays and now I can using your Stick Clip method. Now I thankfully don’t have to buy and expensive capture card :)

Thank you SO much! I managed to record my first good video today! Without your video, I could never have done this.
A better way is to connect the switch on a smart tv,install on tv a recorder app and share to ur phone/pc/tablet.
Never thought of that! I guess to get set up there you’d need to make sure you have a smart tv, are able to easily install apps that can record the entire screen, then rigging it all together, and making sure the quality was good. It might be a little convoluted for most people who want to get into it, but if you already have it all set up then it would be a good idea to try it out.
Rlly smart
what recorder do you recommend?
Wow, this is one of those few high quality, concise and helpful tutorials out there. Thank you!
Yea I agree
Excellent video with all the relevant information at a perfect pace!
This is SO helpful for me, as I can now record my Switch for videos.
When you're having a question and find a video, that contains all the answers 👌
Thanks for the very helpful info! Have wanted to make videos from my switch games for a while and never really knew how to do it in a comfortable way.
Loved the video. I really enjoy pretending like I understood everything (he did such a stand out job at explaining)
Thank you so much other videos don’t give us the exact details it was very easy to follow
One Word. Legend. TYSM mate, saved my life.
I uploaded a video the second I watched the tutorial. Thank you so much!
A very helpful video that helped me understanding the whole concept, thanks !
Thank you for this!
I'm planning to do videos later on with my switch and this definitely helped!
Hey man! Im currently building a series of games, I have used multiple of your tutorials! and i love your content. And i need to record for my demos. Im so happy i can build my game thanks to you!
That’s awesome! I love to hear it. If you need help with anything or have suggestions for ideas let me know
Thank you this video has helped me like no other. Keep up the good work
Thank you so much! This helped me sooo much, because I was trying to find a way to stream decent content
Thanks A LOT for mentioning "monitor and output" - I was getting crazy to be able to record the sound just fine, but actually not hear it while recording :D
This helped me alot. I really appreciate that you made this video, thank you
Useful guide. Thank you for a straight forward and easy to follow video :)
In a few years or some time from now i will become a CZcamsr and you have helped me thank you :)
This was so helpful thank you
FINALLY!!! someone answered my question!! Thank you so much
Great video. I just started using OSB and also recording Switch gameplay. I found that if you right click on your game play video screen in OSB, it gives you the option of viewing it in full screen mode on your computer while recording.
For the lesser demanding games, it gives you excellent gameplay without having to use the more expensive Elgato capture cards and another monitor.
Thanks for taking the time to share what you are doing, it is very helpful.
Oh wow that's a good tip!
perfect for duel monitor setups

love this! so helpful thank you my friend!!
0:52 you can also go to settings, data management, manage screenshots and videos, and select copy to pc via usb connection (i use my laptop). this is what i do for my switch lite (at least until my HDMI to usbc cable arrives that i can use with my capture card.). i then copy the videos / clips to a new folder and then put them into adobe video merger online. sometimes a clip corrupts and goes pink after merging. what i do here is i disconnect the switch and usbc and try again. this works like 99% of the time
Thank you so much! It works very well!
This is very good 👍🏽 and helpful
Tysm this helped like you could not belive!
Thanks sm! I know nothing about this and your vid helped me understand diff ways I can record my gameplay.
It’s really fun to make your own videos, glad it was helpful!
This is very helpful and i cannot believe i used my capture card wrong the whole time😂😂
now i can make me videos for YT😊😊
Ty for sharing this information!
Wow this helped so much! Now I can tell my friend to record this!

Thanks a lot, this wil be SO helpful for my CZcams channel
Thanks for your help!
amazing video, love the visuals
Amazing video and very useful! I still had a question tho because I didn’t quite understand something about the capture cards. Does the quality of the image depends on how powerful your pc is?
You're awesome for this friend. THANKS!
These are some good notes. 📝
This video is good quality. Quality content is rare these days
This helped me SSSOOOOO MUCH!
Thank You So Much! Ive Been Trying to record for a while The only confusing part was that OBS Updated so if you want to hear your gameplay go to your Audio Mixer and at the bottom there should be 2 gears in 1 Icon Click it and Go to Switch audio Then Click on Audio Monitoring then Click Monitor and Output
this video is very helpful
Great video! Thanks for making this for beginners. What if we want to record from our TV though and not a computer monitor because we’re trying to showcase a really great gaming TV? What do you recommend for that scenario?
Thanks this was useful
I've been wanting to stream games for like ever, hopefully I'll be able to with this guide 😊
You can do it! If you run into any issues when it comes to streaming specifically, I made another video that is specific for that and I go through streaming on CZcams directly.

i love you bro thank you so much for this tutorial
I haven't gotten a capture card yet, might use this guide so I can finally release the GBG game I've spent the last 4 months working on, and upload a full playthrough.
This helped me soooo much ty
If you’re trying to review games or just talk about them then the clip stitch is great you don’t even need 30 seconds worth of video per clp
thanks for helping!
Thankss!
Thank u so much! Really helped!
Glad it helped!
Thanks so much for this clean and cut video on how to stream on your Nintendo switch!
It usually takes me so long to figure this stuff out but with this It didn’t take long at all!
Now I can stream Splatoon 3 on CZcams!
That’s awesome, happy I could help. Have fun!
Thanks bro I’m gonna use the first idea cuz I’m not trying to get any wires cuz that takes time then record stuff so I’ll do that rn
That’s how I started out, it takes more time but it works. Have fun!

If I want commentary in my video, do I need a capture card with an audio/mic input, or do I have to do something else? The video was very helpful and I can't wait for more!!!
Yes what do you need to talk in it
Thanks a lot
Thanks
Thanks alot brah
I know I'm late to this video but thank you.
super helpful
thank you so muchhh
Amazing video mate, the one thing I'm just a bit lost on is how do you record your own voice?
I might have just missed it, but I watched it twice lol
Zoned out a few times though
You can use audacity or in OBS, set up another audio input for your microphone and it will record over the video. The only reason I mentioned audacity is because recording to OBS, you have to pre-mix the audio before you start recording, as the gameplay and voiceover will all be under the same track. Recording in audacity will give you options to play with audio levels in editing process. You could separate the tracks in OBS so you get a track for gameplay audio and one for commentary, but I'm coming at this from the perspective that you are new to recording to OBS and to the software in general. It's just easier to record voiceover separately and mix the audio later.
@@bowesyplays1299 thanks mate!
Thanks for the video. I may buy a Capture card. I wish the Switch could just easily stream to CZcams or Twitch!
I was wondering if you can make a nother video were you use a GoPro to video your gameplay
0:51 You can actually go to Settings > Data Management, Manage Screenshots and Videos > Copy to a computer via USB connection
That’s so cool! I didn’t know at time of filming and I never carry the cables I’d need. That would really help make the clip stitching method easier to deal with.
@@DaveNodonNO WAY YOU ACTUALLY REPLIED
THANK YOU.
For obs studio how do I add my microphone as the mic/aux
Hi, great video with all required info for a beginner specially Nintendo Switch, can you please share some more info on the free software(s) to edit Gaming/Vlogging videos for CZcams channel, thanks
I’m planning to do a few more videos on gaming channel content creation tips and guides. If I do go that route, I’ll include something like this - Thanks for suggesting!
What video editor you use at 1:11? Please answer 🙏
With the 2nd method, is it possible to add webcam footage and a mic?
