The impact this film has is because of the music score weaved into it. See this on a large cinemascope screen and full dynamic speakers and you will soon find yourself inside the film. Very powerful in every way. I was lucky enough to have been able to do that with my parents. Wow! Sometimes it would play during Easter at Radio City Music Hall in New York. We always went. It was in the days way before video tape, etc. Seeing it on t.v. is only like watching it on your cell phone. Great to have this here.

This movie excelled at creating a delirious atmosphere. Newman's music and melopeic use of the choir all successfully contribute to the effort. Who can, of course, forget Burton's hysteric manner of wailing out "OVER THERE????? OVER THERE?????"

Biblical films have the best soundtracks. The Robe, The Ten Commandments, and Ben Hur, are among my favorite three. Hats off to the musical composers. The music is a big part of a film's success.

You don't hear this kind of natural soundstage and ambience much in modern scores today. When played in a large theater, it creates an illusion that the orchestra is really there. The dynamics came from the orchestra, not the mixer

Greetings, I am the titular head of the Anti-reverberationist Society. There is too much gratuitous reverb used in music nowadays. I like the up close natural orchestral sound performed and recorded properly in a sound studio. Around the World in 80 Days from 1956 is super for an intimate, non reverb recording. Check it out. They have a suite available on CZcams, and an Expanded Deluxe Version CD of the original soundtrack on sale thru Amazon as well.

When you watch a movie you don't usually pay attention to the music with the scene. Then when you listen to the soundtrack it's very pretty, in my opinion anyway.

Los Angeles television stations in the late 1950s and 60s used to run these magnificent masterpieces with very little commercial interruption. I remember falling in love with Richard Burton at the age of 5, wishing I were Jean Simmons and cheering on Victor Mature. We'd stagger around our little backyard trembling with frightened stares, "Were YOU out there!?!" LOL. I developed a classy standard for excellent films (mom took me at age 6 to see opening of Lawrence of Arabia, STILL my favorite film), which is why we rarely go to films times 14 years, and what a bad mom I am for feigning excitement with our boys over junk like more Star Wars, etc. Thank you always, Fred!

It has been said that Alfred Newman's score for The Robe is the finest and most moving of all film score compositions ever created . My dad was a film projectionist at the theater where the presentation was scheduled. Conversion of projectors, lenses, sound systems, and speakers required days of overtime work. The results were astounding. No longer an optical on-film track but magnetic. The dialogue came from left, middle, right...wherever the actors appeared on the screen. Their voices moved as they moved. As I view the film again after many, many years I am less impressed by the film content but not the magnificent and sometimes heart-breaking film score.

The Robe planted a seed in my heart when I was very young. I began to understand then that the only kingdom that is free of corruption is the kingdom of God. The only love that frees the soul of death and destruction is the love of God. As we watch our world violently veer of course through senseless hatred and destruction I am always reminded of the lesson of eternal love I began to learn through this movie and when I hear this music I am still at 72 driven to my knees in tears and worship for the love of an eternal self sacrificial compassionate father. I love the chorus in classical and baroque music . But the choral backgrounds in popular songs drive me nuts. I am thinking of pre-Capitol Records Sinatra and too much of Dean. However, it seems the chorus is acting as an integral instrument in this film score in a very haunting and beautiful manner. Every Easter time I try to find this movie on TCM but haven't seen it for several years. Thanks for posting it.

I was blessed to have graduated from the same college as the author of the novel, The Robe (some seventy-seven years after he did), and I actually had the privilege of holding the presentation copy of the novel that he gave to the college. I was told, later, that due to personal reasons possibly touching upon his treatment by classmates there, he refused to visit the college, and declined all requests after he had achieved fame as a novelist. But his publisher deposited in the college library a signed first edition of each of his novels as they were published. Holding that copy of The Robe was one of the great events of my college experience.
