One thing I notice about my bits (fresh newby) when I write a joke it starts at about 40 seconds and ends up being about 12. By the time i chop out filler words and re-word sentences to be more concice it ends up being much shorter.
During a writting session I usually go from having too much - ~12 minutes - to finding myself needing to write another minute (to meet 5 - you've pointed out to aim for 4.20-ish, which is great advice as it leaves room for laugh breaks in the case that you have a good set). Which at the open mic level is great 'cos I can try out more stuff per set. Trouble is finding what to cut to not go overtime.
I learnt a lot from being an audience member and frustratingly watching more experienced and funnier comedians dancing around for too long to get to the point.
Not to teach granny how to suck eggs, but I get left with the impression that I could have told the same bit in half the time, but I get to learn from their mistakes.

Thanks for commenting. First of all, it's great that you're writing and gaining so much material. A problem a lot of comics have is they can't write enough! So at least there's that. If you find yourself sacrificing jokes you think are good, I'd urge you to have two versions of your set and maybe swap them every other gig, soon you'll naturally start to mix and use only the jokes that hit more consistently. This, of course, is the method that will take but time, but you'll be left with a better set for doing so.
Indeed it's true, I've seen countless comics who are experienced and are calm onstage and they forget the aim is to make them laugh, not just be cool onstage. I've also been victim to this myself. At least you're paying attention and noticing what others could do better. All of these opinions and ideas add up in the long run. Keep paying attention, keep performing and keep doing what your doing.

@@LetsTalkComedythanks for the encouragement and the return comment.
I haven't hit a wall yet because I've Been a fan of comedy for over a decade, but never thought I'd ever get on stage (based on location - previously never lived near a local club)
so I've got a back-log of ideas that were never put on paper.
Since i took the dive (about 2 months ago) I've got about an hour of different material written.
It's just a matter of putting the seperate parts together to make a coherent whole.
I like to focus on flow rather than "joke - pause - change subject". Plus it makes it easier to rehearse and remember on stage as well as keep the audience on board.
Also have a lot of ideas on how to segway into and out of each bit as nessesarry in future as I compile each part into a different whole.
I think I'm a natural writer. It's the performance and nerves I need to develop.
Also on the cool vs funny. Your advice on "is it about you or the audience" is gold. I try to walk the line between having something to say that I want to communicate and respecting the audience's time and attention.

Love your videos and they have totally been a first step for me, just like yourself and most other people I have a full time job but I travel a lot and took a lot of time , and wanting to learn from your video which I totally feel like I have… I was all about the community aspect of what you were looking for… I’ve tried to comment and show love to others but seems like most don’t… which sucks because u are extremely good and breaking down your videos… wanted to be part of helping to get this channel to 100k subscribers!!! But I honestly don’t see much support here…. I will definitely be on the live stream tomorrow but not sure past that… I did like most your video and watched almost all them… great information

I really appreciate that. You've done lots of work regarding writing jokes from videos. Sorry I haven't responded to them yet. Wanted to give them my full attention. I have noticed something about your comments, especially around the idea of success. You mentioned that you wanted to help get my channel to 100k subscribers, but you don't think there's much support from people watching. That's simply not true. 10k subscribers is more than I ever expected. My career has been successful as a working performer. I've never had any one area that has become a major success. But the major success isn't the goal at all. I've never focused on it. Instead, the goal is to be able to do what I love, get as good as I can at it, and support myself. So, in regards to the channel. I wanted to offer people real advice. I don't focus on trends on CZcams. I don't make great thumbnails. I don't overthink my videos, and I don't even look at my analytics. Instead, I make videos I enjoy and think will help people understand the basics of performance. I think, based on your messages, that you're going to do well in comedy if you don't focus on mega fame or success. Instead, focus on getting onstage at open mics 100 times and finding your voice and building a foundation. Focusing on fame will just have you dreaming and doesn't offer anything real. I'll get around to your other comments ASAP. Many thanks for watching so many videos.

      Traveling
I just got back from France it’s such a beautiful place… with so much amazing art and history…. And the language is captivating sometimes the most simple things can sound like a mixture of being sexy and extremely nice… like …. Qu'est-ce que tu veux boire ? Sounds a little sexy or at best flirtatious… but it means …what would you like to drink?…. Simple question but said in French had some spice to it…..or….Je promets que cette chambre n'a pas de punaises de lit…. Sounds extremely nice …but in reality it means…. This room doesn’t have bed bugs…I have a few more…Votre respiration sent comme de vieux poissons et vous avez quelque chose coincé dans vos dents… tell me doesn’t sound pretty seductive ?… I’ll repeat this one…. Votre respiratio sent comme de vieux poissons et vous avez quelque chose coincé dans vos dents….that sounds damn sexy to me…if a woman told me that I would have a big smile on my face … until someone translated it for me… which is …Your breath smells like old fish, and something is in your teeth… but I didn’t know that… I would have totally thought you were flirting with me , not insulting me ….but my favorite phrase I heard which was the only one that sounded sexy and was a good thing… was…. Les femmes françaises aiment les hommes noirs américains… which mean French women love black American men… and yes they did! I starting seeing one while I was there and the last thing she said to me before I left…Tu as un petit pénis et tu ne te manqueras pas… the whole flight home I kept repeating that phrase…. Tu as un petit pénis et tu ne te manqueras pas….she didn’t tell me what I meant but it had to be good she had such a smile on her face saying it to me , when I left … Frank Tu as un petit pénis et tu ne te manqueras pas… I just couldn’t get it out my head…so I asked a flight attendant as I was departing my flight if she could tell me what it meant… she started laughing and then went over and told some other flight attendant what I had asked her and they laughed… then she walks back over and says… and I will never forget this… it means you have a little penis and you won’t be missed… my jaw dropped to the ground… I was broken… and I will never go to France again!!!

I saw this study the other that said speaking in front of a crowd is considered the number 1 fear of the average person , I found that amazing . number 2 is dead ... dead is number 2?? To think so many people everyday are having to speak at there jobs or at there schools or even in front of the PTA but in there heads they are thinking, I wish I was in a burning building right now, or in a horrible car wreck, some my even be hoping for a astroid to hit them in the head right now...this means to the average Individual would rather be the person in the casket than the person doing the eulogy. Lol quick exercise , let’s go im in this!!! I plan to be the best comic of this era!!! And I haven’t even got on stage!!! Love the Channel and love all those who watch!!! Sometimes you know your special and have a gift but it can take a long time to see it!!!much love to all those like myself just want to express yourself and make others laugh

Thanks for commenting. Yes, indeed, I agree. It's better than it was. I've sorted the sound issue, which took quite a while. I'll have a think about the background. I'm in a limited space. Its not something I'm really bothered about. As long as people are getting value from it that's more important. Maybe I'll change something soon.
