Contra Force doesn't deserve all the crap that it gets. It's not a fantastic game but it does a lot of things right. The gunplay is still decent, I like the dynamic of having different characters who have their own unique weapons, I like being able to call on another character for some short assistance(though why they can be spammed is a mystery to me), and not allowing each character to run out of lives is a decent little mechanic that keeps you monitoring your squad. I'm not sure that I like the Gradius-style upgrade system but then again how would they have handled multiple upgrades and unique weapons per character otherwise? The two striking issues with this game are the constant and slow-to-a-crawl slowdown it suffers from, and the fact that they called it Contra Force. Had they released it under a different name I don't think people would've been so sour at it. I used to own this cart when I was a kid and I played it all the time.
I played a bootleged version of this when I was a kid. Its called Super Contra 6. It had less slowdowns than the original but it had a hack. If you press start and up together, you basically get infinite lives. It sometimes used to trigger accidentally and I, as a kid, could not figure out for the life of me what was happening. But this game is awesome! I have beaten this without cheats and it was difficult...especially later on. Good memories.
Actually, I consider this canon to the rest of the Contra games in the means that it's actually set many years before the actual Contra events... even the location matches - Neo City.
taking a trip down memory lane right now. This game was one of my favorite NES games...but i was a kid, i didn't know better. haha Contra Hard Corps for Sega Genesis was amazing also.
When i was a kid, i had only two Contra games... original Contra and Contra Force. And out of those two, i always preferred Contra Force. The Boat Level Boss, The Construction Site and Airplane levels sold it for me. Seriously, i'm in love with the Second Boss.
Whoever played this game did a great job at it. Finding the right spot when dealing with bosses so he can't take a singles hit from them(except the first one, though, bad luck).
I remember playing this for the first time( I was 6 y.o) I managed to get to the first boss, but I really had to make a poop. But I didn't know how to pause the game so I kept fighting that boss and when I killed him I ran to the toilet. I made a poop, and when came back to my room, I saw a poop on the floor, which most probably had come out by my pants's leg. Imagine the face of my father.
Looks cool. Don't think it's my style. You are right Mr. 77. Doesn't even look like a Contra game. Konami just bit off of TMNT3. My thoughts, anyway. Thanks for the gameplay!
I think the main problem isn’t even that this game is bad, but instead that it isn’t even something that feels right for Contra to begin with. And as a matter of fact, it wasn’t! It was originally called “Arc Hound” when it was going to release in Japan, but the market for new games on the original Famicom has been left in ruins at that point and was cancelled, so naturally they still wanted to release it in North America, not wanting their work to go to waste. It was only renamed to “Contra Force” because they thought that the game would sell poorly regardless and wanted to slap the established Contra brand onto it last minute, A.K.A. greed. It didn’t seem to work though, and if anything, it might’ve actually affected the sales for it even *worse.* It sold extremely poorly, was never advertised again just days after launch immediately calling the SNES game Contra III, and it is now one of the rarest NES games you can have. A legit loose copy goes for a few hundred, and a legit fully boxed copy can easy reach quadruple digits. Needless to say, while it is a very flawed game, and certainly terrible for a *Contra* game, it’s still far from being one of the worst titles that the NES has to offer, it’s just simply frowned upon so much because of the name and the time it was released in. If this was made and released much earlier in the NES lifespan with the name Arc Hound, then it probably wouldn’t have gotten as much negativity and poor sales as it did. It probably would’ve been mostly forgotten either way sure, but at least it would’ve had a chance from a brief market standpoint if nothing else. I don’t think it’s a good game of course, because oh it’s still bad, but there’s definitely much worse games you can play on the same console. No wonder why they didn’t want to put this game on the Contra Collection. The major reason isn’t just because it’s a bad game, but because it’s also not supposed to be a Contra title! They mislabeled it back then and only back then on purpose to try and see if they can get away with it, which fortunately they didn’t… A shame that Konami seems to have forgotten their past mistakes in more recent years to a much more extreme level with games like Metal Gear Survive though.
I used to think that this game was too hard from the very first level until I was aware that you can change your hero and save lives. Then if you do well you have 8 lives every level. This and the fact that you can call again and again a partner for help... (several bosses can be beaten this way, you can hide yourself and your partner should do the dirty job), I realise that the game can be easily completed. The infinite continues help a lot as well.
It's not a bad game, what really irritates me is the performance, it slows down sometimes... I should say, it runs with normal speed sometimes, that's more true. Framerate issues are horrible. Without that, it would be pretty good and it's much more fun with 2 players.
It's ok, except that it's inevitably going to get compared to Contra and Super C, which is the equivalent of comparing a V6 Camaro to a Lamborghini Veneno.

Dr.Beef Well, originally, it wasn't even a Contra game. In Japan, it was scheduled as Arc Hound, however, they cancelled it and it came out as Contra Force in North America.
Yeah, I know. Contra and Super C are two of my top 10 NES games, and I can't think of too many that have aged better than those two. It's a shame that this was the final Contra chapter of the Nintendo. It's not even a terrible game or anything. It's halfway decent, which isn't surprising, considering it came from Konami. It doesn't compare to the first two, though. Bring it over to the states and name it Arc Hound. It makes more sense.
not bad ? this game is so fun and easy, I completed it so many times

After a long time, I found an emulator called NESsim. Very simple emulator, lacks of many features but has CPU overclock feature and does miracle with this game. The game is much more fun without slowdowns! (well, it's obvious)
This is one I paid $24 about a couple years ago (worth more now), it's not Contra no, but then again it wasn't originally supposed to be. The game is pretty cool and quite challenging (even this longplay got a Game Over on it), and the music is the usual Konami standard (which back then was quite high, this game is no exception). If I had to buy it again 2 years ago for the $24, the answer would be yes. I did talk the guy down about 5 bucks from his original asking price at a pawn shop. I have zero regrets about owning this game in my collection.
This game is really not nearly as bad as people think; nothing mind-blowing but worth a play through. If it wasn't called Contra people would go a lot more easy on this one. The soundtrack is also amazing.
This is the time period in gaming when top down was the closest thing to '3D' lots of companies wanted to make a game towards being 'next level gen', but the technology & know-how wasn't just there yet. Another period of gaming that sucked was the PS1 & N64 era where the industry was pushing for everything really 3D but backgrounds were ugly blurry-detailess, with polygon square edges on sprites. Funny how those games today look outdated, but the older games on the SNES look amazing and still hold up today.
And yet in games where the gameplay was well crafted I for one didn't give a damn about the backgrounds being blurry or skitchy. Ape escape is still one of my favorite games ever and it has that PS1 era thing going on in spades.
It's a mishmash of proven mechanics from other games, tied together with a proven label from other games. Clearly lovingly crafted by a corporate committee. but the actual designers did a good job making their besuited overlords a good game to go with their corporate kitsch.
i was stuck at the pace where the that block comes floating down, but it wont come again unless you go back a little and come back. i didn't know about it when i played it years ago. feel bad. thanks for the walk through
What im curious about is why did they gave us and ending like that, the mistery wasnt solved, i was hoping for a sequel back then.....too bad it didnt had one
I used to play this amazing game with my young uncle all night long...now almost 20 years is passed and it's a few years my young uncle has gone from this world forever... fuck this worthless life...
@dezm101 that's EXACTLY what this game is... but the Heads at Konami (at that time) were like " nah, this game just ain't gonna sell on its own wings; let's strap our good ol' 'Contra' moniker on it and it'll sell like cakes & we'll be raking in da dough, fo' sure!" I could only imagine their faces when that didn't work as planned, LOL!
If this game ran at the speed of an actual Contra game, the runtime on this longplay would be half of what it is now. Not a "bad" game, but not a true Contra game either.
That's because it was supposed to have been called Arkhound. The game's Japanese release was canned, so possibly Konami in the US thought the game would sell with the Contra name on it alone, it didn't (the SNES was already out, and gamers had already moved on to the SNES, or the Genesis.
I honestly don't give a crap how a game looks, as long as the game is good. But I always hated it when a game got delayed just because a new console was coming out, and they wanted to make it for that instead, even though the game was almost finished. I mean, who gives a shit! just give us the damn game!
That's because it is Arkhound, or would've been called that in Japan had it not gotten cancelled there. Konami in the US meanwhile, placed this one far in the past from the actual Contra and aliens timeline.
The "plot" still makes no sense all these years later. The ending makes it even worse. I'd always assumed Fox was the guy who appears to be dead in the opening and Burns is chasing the killer or something like that. But you have lines like "You survived? CONGRATULATIONS!" and "This is a great place to relax." Not super impressed with Valis on this one, but the game itself is a chore to play with the slowdowns so I can't exactly blame them for messing up at times.
hmmm, I had a blast to enjoy Contra Force as a kid even I overlooked the game's fatal flaw. the music is outstanding. I like character selection with each one has unique attack. The upgrade system is straight outta Gradius. However, gameplay ... well ... shit ... where do I even begin? The game run awful. Not only it's not smooth, but also slowdown whenever it feels like it ... like ... 90% of the game. The storyline here is you gotta rekt crime syndicate instead of aliens (a commander took several hits to down, but 1 hit and you died). There is no Konami Code in Contra Force, and it's hard as shit. I'm so glad they fix all those problem in Contra Hard Corps.

Thumb up for this and agree to it personally 👍.

The music sounds pretty great too, I think the main problem is the slowdown
I agree! The slowdown and the name are its only problems.
Totally agree. In fact, i do really like this game.
Overall, I think its biggest problem is probably the word "Contra" in its title. It's not great, it's not terrible, it's not really Contra.
Man i still love this game.. it has issues.. but still one my fav

To bad it’s not really a contra game but another game rebranded contra
It's like Battlefield Bad Company 2 on NES - a team of four players, tunnel-like gameplay and destructible environments.

I’m aware this is what it actually was
Contra- 2633
Super C- 2634
Operation C- 2635
Contra 3- 2636
Contra 4- 2636
Hard Corps- 2641
This should have stayed as Arc Hound instead of Contra Force.
And it would be blamed for trying to Rip-Off Contra...
I love this game, but looks like it was cursed...
Nah, the name Contra Force is good.

the games now need graphics more than gameplay. this cam can be run on a wooden PC but still is so much addictive still! hats off

they should of called it COLLEGE BROS
Given that it was a NES game released in 1992, the Contra was probably the only way they were going to shift any copies.
