  • So you want to scan your film?
In this video I discuss the pros and cons for scanning your own film negatives.
I recommend doing a cost analysis for how much film you shoot. Generally if you plan on shooting quite a bit of film with serious intent I find it worth it.
You get to scan all of your photos at the resolution you want. You can scan old film negatives and digitize family photos. You also have more love and care than the worker scanning your photo.
I quickly walk through scanning a film negative. Clean the film, clean the scanner, get it in fast and shut the lid. Scanning the film is a process of cropping the picture, choosing the resolution, naming the file, and choosing the color calibration you prefer. At which point the scan is going to be similar to a raw, with a lot of editing wiggle room.
Some draw backs for getting a scanner include...
Scanners cost a lot of money and something is always at the expense of something else. Going on a cool trip to shoot more photos could definitely be more worth it than a scanner. It also takes a ton of time and that should not be ignored, adds up fast. Final draw back is that a scanner is not a fun user experience at all.
With all that said, I do believe that most film enthusiasts should have the ability to scan their own film.
Hope this video helps you with your decision.
