Lost DJI Mini 2 at Blea Tarn

  • Friday 2nd April 2021, I lost all GPS from my mini 2 at the top of Side Pike at Blea Tarn. Having had GPS signal and good connection - the home point updated 3 times - 1st at Launch then in the middle of the tarn, then at the other side. It lost all GPS at the top of the pike with 7 sats.
My friend Paul Byers who I thank for the additional footage - had 26 sats. Is this a faulty Mini 2- either way I have a new one that is performing well so far.
Shall I sell this or keep for spare parts?

So glad you found your Mini 2! I lost my Mini 2 near Donner Summit in northern California last year when it was returning from a long flight, but it ran out of battery before it made it all the way back to me. I happened to have a spare Mini 2 that I used to search for the original, but after a couple of hours, not finding it, I received a text from another hiker with a photo of my drone. He found it earlier and took it home. Then he noticed my phone number on the bottom and texted me. We met up and he returned my drone and wouldn't even accept a reward. It was a very good idea to put my phone number on the drone. It made for a happy ending, as yours was. 🤩
    Wishing you many happy flights!

Here was your mistake, you kept pressing RTH several times. Press once, drone returns, press again you cancel the return. Be patient, press it only once or just wait 11 seconds and the drone will come back on its own.

In settings in the fly app there is: setting for land if you loose signal, hover in place if you loose signal or return to home if you loose signal. The best choice that never failed for me is to select a RETURN TO HOME 🏠. It doesn’t matter how low you fly or how high, it always comes back to me. So you must of have hover in place if you ever lost signal. Always make sure settings are correct. Also there is no reason to keep a second drone for parts but you could probably sell for $300 or less depends on how long you had it and what shape it’s in.

On the Mavic Air 2, everyone has failed to let people know TWO VERY IMPORTANT MAJOR ISSUES with this drone. To quickly summarize and not bore your readers - FIRST the battery life is AT BEST 15 minutes - I have tested it. It is 30 if you just turn it on and leave it hover - but once you start using the gimble and the software and the presets and the turns and fight the wind - you have 10 to 15 minutes. How do I know this? Because my drone is at the bottom of the Rio Grand Gorge Canyon after IT ALL ON ITS OWN INITIATED A FORCED LANDING instead of having a feature that would bring my drone back when it reaches 35% battery. An easily added feature that DJI refuses to include. SECOND - the drone IS AMAZING when you know how to use it - but you don't know how to use it and you will likely have an issue or a crash or something and THIS COMPANY PROVIDES ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE - no phone number, no response to emails and they are in China - sheltered from any access by any client. So WHEN you break it or it stops working or you need assistance, who is going to provide it? You? Please be more accurate with your reviews - it is a great drone BUT IT HAS THESE MAJOR FLAWS - LOW BATTERY LIFE (15 MINUTES MAX) - NO FORCED RETURN HOME FEATURE - NO CUSTOMER SERVICE!

The poor satellite lock should have been a warning not to fly it so far away. It hovered at exactly the height it was programmed to if you figure in the fact he had to increase the max elev. in order to go over the top. There is nothing wrong with the drone unless it got wet overnight.

Some of them do it for the video of some of them do it for the range test. If you don't want something strange to happen try to keep the drone a little bit closer but closer or go closer to the objects that you're trying to film

I lost my drone (Mini2). I was using my IPAD to view which wasn’t connected to any service e.g. mobile. I went home (about 10 miles) emailed the find my drone (FMD) last location from the IPAD to my mobile, viewed on google maps on the mobile phone, went out and found it EXACTLY where the locator icon said it was - middle of a field. I totally understand the relief you felt when finding yours. My GPS experience was good, unlike yours so FMD does work for the most part.

For loss of signal the settings are: hover in place, descend and land, or return to home. You must have had the hover setting. I have lost signal after cresting a mountain. After about 30 seconds the Mini 2 reappeared doing a RTH. Setting it to hover or land after signal loss is a sure way to lose your drone. If you are higher than the RTH setting the drone does not descend but comes back at that height

Quijano Guillermo - There was clearly something wrong with your setup (faulty drone/faulty battery/extreme environment etc) because there are plenty videos on CZcams showing air2 gets 25-27 min flight time easily. I myself get over 20 min of flight most of the time (just checked my logs on airdata com), but I try not to stress my batteries, so charge them to 93-95% and land with 15%. Moreover dji does have several layers of protection regarding not losing your drone - and if the remaining battery is just enough to return to the homepoint the drone will initiate auto-return unless cancelled by user. This all has worked for me reliably over the course of several years first with Air1 and now with Air2.

This is really interesting. You did a great job telling your frustrating story. I'm surprised they let you keep the first drone. I had a flyaway with my first Mavic Air and had to buy a new one. From that day, I always had connection and drifting problems with the two controllers and four Mavic Airs I would eventually have. I finally traded the Air up to the Mini 2 and it's been night and day. My Mini 2 has never failed or balked at anything which leads me to think that you and I might have gotten duds. A really interesting test would be to remove the skins piece by piece to see if the signal improves. I might advise you to keep the drone for parts if the test fails. You don't want someone else to have a defective drone. The other thing is, the batteries are so expensive, you will want it as a spare. Great, informative video and let us know what happens! - Christian

I am glad your efforts paid off when you found your drone, though that must be very stressful. I lost my drone in Scotland last month never got it back. Technically my fault, I admit, but "find my drone" option in dji app doesn't pinpoint exactly where your drone is. In my case it was a bit far where the map was showing its last location took lots of effort for me to locate where it was beeping from, but then I realise drone got stuck on nearly 45-meter high tree and I left it there. I just ordered another dji mini 2 after watching lots of obstacle sensors failing videos on youtube decided not to buy an expensive drone and this time be more vigilant when flying at new places.
Also now you have another drone. Try same path again with the blue drone. That can be a great test to see this time it works. This time try in dry weather so if you have to rescue it, land will be less slippery.

Always check Advanced Safety settings in the first tab, right at the bottom of the menu.
RTH has 3 options Land, Hover or return!
I suspect you had hover or land selected?
Always check this setting as part of your preflight check list, it usually remembers the setting and doesn't need changing BUT I have seen mine reset to hover or land on a couple of occasions especially after a DJI Fly app update.
As for the home point keep changing, just be careful, I have seen this happen on other CZcams videos, where it kept changing constantly throughout a flight, if this happens over a lake, that will be your home point and the Mini 2 will return and land there! 😯⚠️

To find the drone, you should search another location. Draw a line between the last home point and the location of the drone where it lost controller signal.
Walk along the line until you reach the highest place.
Another possibility is that the drone headed to LAT=0, ALT=0 when it lost controller signal.

I always worry when I fly at altitudes needed for mountain peaks and ridge lines because if I have climbed to 800 feet (240 meters) and my RTH setting is lower that that and I lose signal the RTH will then descend to the RTH setting essentially flying itself into the ground. It looks like you flew over the ridge and lost signal and RTH kicked in and it descended into the ground? The drone doesn’t know it was really only 50 Feet from the ground not 800. The only way RTH would have cleared that stone wall would be if your RTH setting is higher than the ridge line. Just a possibility?

I think the stickers on ur drone badly affect the gps. It covers the gps module inside the drone and I think its quite sensitive to interference so that prob doesn't help

Would it be possible to have a beeping feature on drones that self land? Of course, the drone would have to land before the battery is totally dead. Don’t they do that anyway? An intermittent beep might allow someone to find it even if it can’t be seen.

I usually attach a very powerfull strawberry light on my drone. it is expensive but the different colours you can choose last 7 hours- You can fly wirhout the load button on for it's so light.

There is a locate my drone function in the app and if there is still enough power in the battery, it will make a sound so you can locate it. What happened in the video was user error. He flew the drone out of sight behind a friggin mountain. No wi-fi can penetrate that at that distance. So he lost video connection, then he panicked and pressed RTH (Return to home) several times, which canceled auto return. All he had to do was wait for 11 seconds and the drone would have returned on its own. User error is the most common reason people lose their drones, they panic and keep mashing RTH and cancel it by doing that.

Dont think its MOD using GPS jamming , they would be knocking out everyone’s mobile phone up there . Also its 8am in the Morning so no low flying aircraft at that time .
If it was a weekend then defo no flying aircraft around .
Should always set it to return to home if signal is lost .
Sell the drone and put the money towards a upgrade

The first reset of RTH was because you were with 20” of the water, luck you did not loose it then. DJI/Profile/find my drone records last GPS of the drone when it turns off or looses link. Check for fun those coordinates, verify on Google Earth, of down loaded map on you phone if out side of cell range is a really good idea, because your phone gps can take you to those coordinates. Great place to fly. Much easier to hike in and find the drone then most places with trees and brush. watch your screen data when flying and if not good land asap, or switch to sport, orient and watch map and then rush home. i have had wind try to run off with my drone twice now. Got to be ready, practice scenarios.

  • @ThatGoth

This is why it's not legal to fly outside line of sight and why you should fly back as soon as you have any technical issues..
The stickers usually weigh about 6g which will likely block some (a tiny bit) of the signal and put the drone over 250g.
I'm wondering if the issue is with the controller, if the Home Location updated itself you should have brought it home manually and immediately.
It could have been worse as the home location updated in the lake centre, if you had it set to RTH on signal loss (which I would) and didn't get manual control back it could have landed in the water.
